Abstract:
Many beach nourishment projects have been performed in China over the last 2 decades since the first project was completed in 1990 in Hong Kong. The history and distribution of beach nourishment in China is summarized in this paper. Considering the development of nourishment design and public perceptions, the history of beach fill in China can be summarized into 3 stages. In general, this paper shows the characteristics of 4 types of nourishment projects based on different environmental conditions, 4 typical nourished sites for each type were selected and described in detail respectively. Considering the current research status in China, recommendations and suggestions for future development are outlined, including such aspects as construction of more and larger projects, development of beach management strategies, a beach nourishment manual, research efforts on numerical models for sediment transport and post-project monitoring and evaluation.

Abstract:
After introducing groundwater development and other issues, the paper analyzes China's groundwater management system and its problems, and provides suggestions for improving the system. Increasing water demand since the 1970s has resulted in severe groundwater overdraft, water level decline and water quality degradation in China, but the current management system is not able to provide an effective and efficient solution. The legislation is separate and local, the management institutions are locally designed and the key management instruments are not integrated. This is because China lacks distinct groundwater management systems, comprehensive legislation, a quality management system and capacity, as well as coordinated institutions, and clear relationships and effective links among systems. To improve groundwater management, the concept of aquifer management and an integrated groundwater management system must be developed. The existing systems need to be restructured to clarify relationships and functions. The groundwater abstraction permit system needs to be reformed to a group permit. A quality management system is required and capacity building must be strengthened.

Abstract:
Caofeidian sea area is the only natural site suitable for building a large-sized berth of 300 000 tons without excavation of waterways and harbor basins in Bohai Bay. In Caofeidian harbor area, the stability of the shoals-inlets coastal system under natural conditions is a key point. The harbor could be developed only if the coastal system is stable. In this paper the characteristics of waves, tidal currents, sedimentation and seabed evolution in the Caofeidian shoal area is briefly described, and the trend of stability of shoals and channels is predicted based on research on the coastal system formation. Engineering effect of some projects, such as the dam linking the Caofeidian Island and the coastline, the shoal reclamation and ore terminal construction, is also studied. The analysis show that deposition and erosion of the seabed in front of Caofeidian foreland will reach its equilibrium in 2~3 years after the implementation of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:
With an aim to improve and maintenance water depth along the navigational channel, the Deep Waterway Project has been conducted in the Changjiang Estuary. The structures of dikes and groins have greatly changed the local circulation with the combined effects of astronomical tide and strong freshwater discharge. A high-resolution fully three-dimension unstructured-grid model (FVCOM) has been applied to study the complicated hydrodynamics with the implementation of unstructured-grid dike-groin module. With the model validation with observation data, the simulation shows the dikes and groins has converted the rotational current into reciprocating flow along the navigational channel between the dikes, and produced the geometrically controlled eddies. The significant southward crossover current was produced along the dike during high tide when the water level is higher than the dike height. The strong saltwater intrusion is also revealed in the observation and model simulation.

Abstract:
In coastal area, serious storm surge disasters are frequently caused by the higher tidal level and concomitant huge wave heights toward shoreline. Qingdao is located at the southern tip of Shandong Peninsula of China. The storm surge disaster in Qingdao depends on various influencing factors such as the intensity, duration, and route of the passing typhoon. In order to make up the defects of the warning water level, a Poisson Bi-variable Gumbel Logistic Distribution is presented to predict storm surge intensity. On the basis of observed records of tidal level and simultaneously occurred wave height series that are sampled from typhoon processes in Qingdao coastal area of China since 1949, the return periods of typhoon surge are estimated by this model. Then a new criterion is put forward to classify intensity grade of disaster-induced typhoon surges. A practical case indicates that the new criterion is clear in probability concept, easy to operate, and fits the calculation of typhoon surge intensity. Thus the procedure with the proposed statistical model will be a reference for the disaster mitigation in the other coastal area influenced by typhoons.

Abstract:
Agricultural production in China occurs via three distinct organizational units: the countryside farmer, state farms, and military farms. The countryside farmer in northeast China carries out most production operations with hand tools, some animal and tractor power, and little additional mechanization. Most weeds in row crops are controlled by hand, although a high percentage of the rice crop is treated with herbicides as is about 20% of the wheat. Countryside farmers independently manage small plots of land. State and military farms, the majority of which are located in China's northeastern-most province of Heilongjiang, are highly mechanized and accomplish most weed control with herbicides. Military farms range from ~500–2,500 ha, and state farms generally occupy 50,000–100,000 ha, with some much larger. Primary crops on the military farms are soybeans, oilseed rape, and wheat. State farms generally have more diversity in crops. The need for herbicide adjuvants to increase postemergence (POST) herbicide efficacy and for reduced tillage practices to combat soil erosion are recognized concerns, as is the threat of herbicide resistance.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to establish a comparative conceptual framework to analyze hybrids of western and Chinese strategic management types, where the foundation is an institutional strategic management theory. Design/methodology/approach – This framework is then applied to develop a research instrument that is used in a pilot study of 21 cases in China, primarily Swedish MNCs. Findings – In this study, a complex picture emerges of the various mixes of management types in international firms operating in China. The results demonstrate that the comparative institutional strategic management framework developed seems to work for studying such mixtures of management types. Research limitations/implications – The discussion is based on the assumption of two dominating management types in international firms in China. The authors have found different mixtures among the firms. Besides strategic management, the theory and instrument might also be useful for human resource management issues like recruitment and talent management. Practical implications – Practical implications include a potentially useful measurement tool for strategic management in international firms and for evaluating executives in existing and new positions. Moreover, a contribution is made to global management, since the framework is also useful for comparing strategic management types of international firms in and outside China. Originality/value – This paper contributes to this research in two ways. First, a comparative theory is specified to study the hybrids of strategic management types of international firms, especially for firms in China. Second, an instrument is developed for researching such management mixes and used on a pilot study of international firms operating in China.

Abstract:
In the era of technology, the Chinese government wants to adopt the latest technologies and interlink their processes to secure information of all stakeholders. Digital rights management (DRM) is one form of computerized system of copyright to protect access and stop infringement of digital contents for commercial purposes. For this article, the authors used a secondary literature review approach to first explore the development of intellectual property rights (IPR) in China and then they moved further to highlight the challenges and opportunities of DRM application and its use. The article concludes that China, as an emerging knowledge based economy, is trying to become a part of international laws and treaties. For this they should abide with international laws, treaties and also amend and enforce their own local laws, acts, rules and regulations based on IPR by adopting the latest technology such as DRM. Finally, the authors provided recommendations to offset the challenges together with existing opportunities.
