Abstract:
In our age, businesses are accepted as living organisms. Businesses that are aware of this change have begun to transition from a result-oriented work system to process management, closely following customer expectations in order to exist in the future as well. The largest expense that sports clubs incur involves transfer spending, because the most talented footballer, who would influence team success, is recruited from outside the club. Today, many sports clubs are incorporated and need to create their own economic resources that would not only ensure their survival but also their success and continuity. This resource can be achieved by means of the footballers who participate in the youth development programs conducted by the club’ football academy. The standards of football are on the rise, and so are the expectations of all those involved, with qualified footballers demanding astronomical wages. Sport clubs need to increase their profits by using the resources that are being developed in their respective football academies. If a given footballer attains a high standard by performing well during training and making it to the first string team, the club has to save on the transfer budget. The aim of this study is to determine how club football schools and academies manage in accordance with process management within the system approach. This study incorporated the qualitative research method and case study technique. Data was collected with the help of the interview technique and examined using content analysis. In this research, it was found that youth development programs should be managed by employing three main processes: covering education in sports schools, practicing with competitor teams, and transitioning to professionalism. If these processes are applied across football academies, it would lead to the emergence of economically qualified footballers. Youth Development Programs, as a part of the system of process management within the framework of organizational structures of sports clubs, will prove to be an ideal form of structuring.

Abstract:
PurposeThis study derives a new framework that comprehensively assesses management quality along four dimensions, namely Sporting Success; Financial Performance; Fan Welfare Maximization; and Leadership and Governance. Filled with measurable key performance indicators (KPIs), these dimensions serve the purpose of objectively quantifying the relevant success factors. Ultimately, the performance in all dimensions indicates a football club's management quality.Design/methodology/approachThe study relies first on a review of the literature in the field of both general management and sports. Second, the authors adapt the balanced scorecard framework to the field of professional football and use a set of KPIs to assess the management quality of the Bundesliga teams over the seasons 2016/17 and 2017/18. Third, the authors validate the relative weights of the four dimensions composing the so-called “Football Management Quality score” (i.e. FoMa Q-Score) using expert interviews.FindingsTwo movements characterize the score development in 2017/18 compared to 2016/17: first, scores appear more contracted than previously. Second, both average and median scores improved, suggesting a general improvement in the management quality within the Bundesliga.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first exploratory study deriving and measuring relevant key criteria for managing football clubs and illustrating the findings in a ranking. The aim of this study is to establish a model that impacts both academia and practice. By utilizing existing management literature and adjusting it to football particularities, the newfound knowledge begins to close the gap in sport management literature.

Abstract:
In response to the national requirements for the development of campus football and addressing the current imbalance in the development of campus football teaching in China, this study discusses the construction of a football teaching content hierarchical system and flexible management that aligns with China's national conditions. It also elaborates on management strategies for the implementation of categorized guidance, flexible management, and enhanced inspection and evaluation in football teaching. Based on the systematic principles of constructing a campus football teaching content hierarchical system, as well as the basic rules of football tactics and teaching practice, campus football teaching content is divided into three levels: primary, intermediate, and advanced, with ten proficiency levels. The content at each level includes corresponding basic theoretical knowledge of football, football techniques and tactics, mental health education, and physical development. When arranging the teaching content at each level, it is essential to fully consider the matching of football knowledge and tactics, and to organically integrate football knowledge, skills with physical training, and comprehensive quality education. The implementation of flexible management should be practical, proposing different requirements for football teaching in schools of different types and regions, implementing categorized guidance and management; it is necessary to strengthen institutional construction, and use inspection and evaluation as a driving force to promote the sustainable development of football teaching.

Abstract:
Examining three critical periods of transformation in the history of professional football in the United States, this article demonstrates the centrality of the workplace to the development of the National Football League (NFL). The article argues that the NFL originated in the welfare capitalism of the early 1920s; that mass-mediated narratives about corporate management drove pro football’s coming-of-age in the 1950s and 1960s; and that fantasy football—the NFL’s most distinctive new form of spectatorship in the age of digital capitalism—positioned fans as imaginary managers of human capital. Taken together, these three pivotal moments demonstrate the inextricable links between changes in professional sports and transformations in the organization of work.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to illustrate how network analysis can be used to assess the group relationships within a professional football team, starting from the assumption that team results depend, at least in part, on the interaction between team members on the pitch. Elaborating an evaluation model of team relationships can help management in making conscious choices with regards to footballer assessment, selection and acquisition. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology is based on a qualitative/quantitative approach. Data have been acquired through direct observation. UCINET 6.4 software was used to elaborate the data. Findings – An empirical observation was carried out according to the network analysis applicative process, through the analysis of a UEFA Champions League match. The objective was to illustrate the potential of network analysis to assess football team relationships and identify a system of quantitative key indicators, which can be used to elaborate a framework for evaluating the relationships in professional football teams. Originality/value – This model means that it is possible to analyse elements such as the group members’ attitude towards cooperation, providing an evaluation tool for membership relationships that have not yet been expressed through quantitative indicators, as these indicators are relevant in the development of football game tactics.

Abstract:
Purpose – This study aims to examine the association between national economic prosperity (measured by per capita gross national income – GNI) and the acquisition of football workers (indicated by number of amateur footballers, football officials and professional footballers) and predict football performances (specified by qualifications at continental football championships) based on per capita GNI and football workers. Design/methodology/approach – Archival data of 203 national football teams were utilized based on continental football championship records before 2014. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to build various models to ascertain their predictive values. Economically prosperous nations are those with a per capita GNI of more than US$10,000, and unprosperous nations are those with per capita GNI of less than US$10,000. Findings – The analysis indicated that per capita GNI was significantly and positively associated with the acquisition of football workers – but not predictive of football performance. Rather football officials and professionals emerged to be the key predictors of football performance and not per capita GNI. The final model predicted 73.1 and 74.2 per cent of performance and non-performance, respectively, of national football teams correctly. Research limitations – The findings were largely restricted to quantitative archival data for the last continental championships. However, future research may benefit from using qualitative interviews, questionnaires and or ethnographic studies of players, teams and or managers. Practical implications – The results revealed that economic prosperity positively influences the acquisition of football resources (here – in football workers). Specifically, targeted production of football workers, such as the acquisition of a large number of effective professional footballers and officials, can boost football performance – and not merely economic prosperity. Originality/value – Actual football-specific human capital (and not general population) was used in predicting continental football qualifications – a factor uncommon in such studies.

Abstract:
In recent years, China’s competitive sports have developed rapidly. Among them, football is a sport with high energy consumption, high intensity, strong antagonism, and high speed. As a result, injuries are common in football practice. It is impossible to do adequate football training in order to avoid such incidents. At the moment, football injury incidents are common, severely limiting the full growth of the sport in China. This work investigates the safety management of football training using machine learning and an information coverage-centralized genetic technique. To begin, this article describes in detail the machine learning and information coverage-centralized genetic algorithm, summarizes the classification of machine learning models, and introduces the verification and evaluation process of machine learning models and trusted information coverage models as an important theoretical basis for football training safety management. Then, the genetic algorithm based on information coverage concentration is used in football training to analyze the safety risk of football training and the analysis of training speed type. The results show that the human factor accounts for the highest proportion in football training safety accidents, accounting for 28.75%. In the analysis of football training speed, the average passing time of medium strength accounts for the highest proportion of 39.75%. In football training, in order to ensure the safety of training, the combination of medium strength and high strength can be adopted to avoid training injury.

Abstract:
Purpose In the current era of fake news, illusions, manipulations and other artificial attributes of virtuality and reality, authenticity is a virtue that people highly appreciate. This study aims to examine the influence of the personal brand authenticity of top football players on loyalty to the football discipline in general, via the mediation of personal brand identification. Design/methodology/approach Based on data collected from a convenience sample of 562 respondents from Poland via an electronic survey and analyzed using the structural equation modeling method, this study explored, first, the influence of top football players’ personal brand authenticity on consumers’ identification with these football players, and second, how this identification may lead to enhancing loyalty to the football discipline. Finally, it verified how the loyalty effect (attitudinal and behavioral) varies across different categories of spectators. Findings Personal brand identification with authentic football stars is a focal factor enabling the creation of loyalty (attitudinal and behavioral) to the whole discipline. Consumers’ perceptions of the authenticity of the personal brands of football players play a role in increasing identification with these personal brands. This identification is essential in achieving loyalty to football as a sports discipline via football celebrities. Practical implications Football players perceived as authentic are evaluated more positively, leading to consumer identification with these players, which, in turn, increases consumers’ loyalty to football. Thus, the presence of authentic, skilled players is important for football, but the actual loyalty effect from authenticity can be achieved only by identification. Therefore, football requires exceptional, strong stars who reflect a set of desired personal values. Further research is needed to identify the desired set of values that leads to identification with football stars. Originality/value This study presents evidence that the personal brand authenticity of a football star is a driver of loyalty towards football discipline in general if the spectators’ identification with this superstar occurs. Moreover, this study proves that loyalty to football driven by the personal brand authenticity of football stars differs between spectators’ categories.

Abstract:
Purpose Guided by the resource-based theory, the purpose of this study was to predict the role of football talent in the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) rankings of the men’s national football teams in the Copa America zone. Design/methodology/approach The study used archival data of Copa American national football teams. The dependent variable was FIFA rankings, and the independent variables were football talent (measured by the stocks of amateur footballers, professional footballers and football officials). Statistical analysis was performed using Kendall tau statistic and binary logistic regression. Findings The binary logistic regression results indicated that FIFA rankings were statistically and significantly associated with the stock of football officials and professional footballers – but not amateur footballers. The predictive model explained 80 per cent of the variance. Research limitations/implications The study focused exclusively on the stock of football talent in each nation, and not alternative determinants of national football team competitiveness as economic power and quality of professional football leagues, among others. Practical implications The stocks of professional footballers and football officials are valuable sources of competitive advantage (CA) in national football team rankings. Originality/value The study highlighted the uniqueness and distinctiveness of a nation possessing large stocks of professional footballers which can boost the CA and rankings of Copa American national football teams.

Abstract:
An escalating number of crises appear in the sport industry in general and the football industry in particular that make the area of crisis communication an increasingly important matter in both the everyday running and the long-term viability of football. However, the sensitivity of the topic makes an extensive analysis on current practice in crisis communications a particularly challenging task. This study examines how crisis communications is managed by investigating the current practices and techniques employed in English Premier League clubs, as they were presented by communications professionals employed in the clubs. The analysis of the clubs’ practices underlines the lack of proactivity and presents the most popular strategies of crisis-communications management: “Wait for the dust to settle” and “React promptly before the noise grows.” In addition, an underdocumented technique is examined: the use of the informal personal relationships between the employees of the clubs and the members of the media. This study also introduces the “crisis communications management in football” model, which illustrates the practices identified through this study and can potentially act as a guide for crisis-communications analysis in a number of other industries.

The football business is of interest to researchers and investors as a potentially promising area for the development of management theory and investment respectively. One of the important issues in this context is performance management of professional football clubs. In this paper authors propose the criteria characterizing the effectiveness of a football club and build up a system of target indicators (KPI) aimed at quantitatively measuring of the strategic directions of development. The system of balanced scorecards is taken as a basis and includes four blocks: sporting achievements, financial indicators, negotiations with fans, effective management. The assessment criteria were selected based on scientific research in the field of sports management, and the assessment system was tested on the example of three football clubs: PFC CSKA (Russia), Olympique Lyon (France) and Copenhagen (Denmark). The proposals offered in this study can be used by professional football clubs and football federations in building up their development strategies and for the purposes of operational management to improve performance and create unique competitive advantages. ABSTRACT Offloading is a key principle to healing diabetic foot ulcers. Nonremovable knee-high offloading devices are considered the criterion standard for offloading plantar forefoot ulcers. However, patients exhibit a limited tolerance for these devices, which contributes to a lack of use. In this case series describing two patients, the authors share two alternative offloading modalities for the treatment of diabetic plantar forefoot ulcers. One patient was managed using a football offloading dressing, and the other was managed with a modified felted football dressing. The football and modified felted football offloading dressings provide a cost-effective, less time-consuming application and often are a better-tolerated alternative to nonremovable knee-high offloading devices. Clinical findings support further investigation into dressing options tolerated by patients with improved adherence and optimal healing outcomes.

Abstract:
As one of the top football leagues in the world, the Premier League's business model is established according to the operation and management of modern enterprises. China's professional football league was officially launched in 1993, and its business model is still relatively low. Through a comparative study of the business models of the Chinese and British Premier League, it is found that the maturity of the Premier League's business model is inseparable from its nearly 100-year football professionalization process. The British Premier League has much autonomy in the management of the league. It is a monopoly organization with clear property rights over the league and strong independence in operation and management. At the same time, the league’s profits mainly come from high TV broadcast income and considerable advertising and sponsorship income. The entire business model of the Premier League has a side worthy of our country's learning and reference. The Chinese Football Association should minimize its intervention in the Chinese Super League, especially in commercial operations, and give full play to the market's regulatory role. At the same time, the Chinese Football Association should also imitate the management mechanism of the English Football Association, reduce administrative intervention in the Chinese Super League in terms of functions, and shift the focus of work from the overall management of the Chinese Super League to the construction of Chinese national teams and football echelons at all levels. Gradually fade out of the overall control of the Chinese Super League.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the features of the training process of football students during sports improvement. The content of training of young football players in the preparatory period, which includes more effective training methods, based on the results of testing the level of physical and technical and tactical fitness. It is determined that the management of the training process of football players is a complex process, because the object of management - a person with its many physiological, morphological and psychological-pedagogical features and their unique manifestations. Therefore, effective management of football players' training is the ability to properly plan and regularly monitor it on the basis of systematic information. Among such non-traditional means, in our opinion, there are exercises of adaptive-strengthening character which allow to strengthen the musculoskeletal system of the lower extremities, thereby expanding opportunities of increase of special physical training of football players and decrease in sports injuries. Of course, they should be used in combination with traditional physical and technical-tactical exercises and used as additional factors that contribute to the expansion of the functional boundaries of the musculoskeletal system. Improving the management of the training process based on the generalization and analysis of the structure of competitive activities of football players and the general laws of sportsmanship is one of the promising research areas in the field of methods of sports training in football. In particular, they point to the need to plan training loads, which can lead to improved aspects of football training.

AbstractCorporate social responsibility (CSR) has become increasingly significant for a wide range of organisations and for the managers that work within them. This is particularly true in the sport industry, where CSR is now an important area of focus for sport organisations, sport events and individual athletes. This article demonstrates how CSR can inform both theoretical debates and management practice within sport organisations. It does so by focusing on stakeholder theory, which overlaps considerably with CSR. In this article, stakeholder theory is used to examine three major CSR issues: stakeholder definition and salience, firm actions and responses, and stakeholder actions and responses. These three issues are considered in the context of the UK football industry. The article draws on 15 semi-structured qualitative interviews with senior representatives from a number of different organisations. These include the director of a large professional football club; a chief executive of a medium-sized professional football club in addition to the supporter-elected director; and the vice-chairman of a small professional football club. Additional interviews were undertaken with five representatives from national supporter organisations, two board members at two large supporter associations, two representatives from the Football League, one representative from the Independent Football Commission, and a prominent sports journalist. The analysis of the interview data illustrates ways in which CSR can be implemented by sport organisations through stakeholder management strategies. The article concludes that stakeholder theory has both conceptual and empirical value and can be used to illuminate key issues in sport management.
