Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to conceptualize perceived management consulting success, derive relevant success factors based on principal-agent theory and the resource-based view as well as investigate the particular factors’ influence. Management consulting has become important for improving the competitiveness of a variety of firms. Surprisingly, there is little empirical evidence clarifying what constitutes a successful management consulting project. Design/methodology/approach The authors conduct a survey to empirically investigate the hypotheses. They develop the survey instrument through a literature review, expert interviews, a pre-test and an item-sorting test. To analyze the data from 348 management consultants, the authors apply structural equation modeling. Additionally, they choose a triangulation approach by asking secondary informants about the originally surveyed consultants’ responses. Findings Initially, the authors develop the second-order construct perceived management consulting success, consisting of the factors compliance with budget and schedule, degree of target achievement, profitability as well as expansion and extension. Additionally, they develop an understanding of management consulting’s success factors. In this regard, five of six factors show a significant impact on perceived management consulting success. Originality/value According to the results, the factor intensity of collaboration is of highest importance for perceived management consulting success. Further, the factors common vision, consultant expertise and top management support show comparably strong significant influences. Yet, the authors have to reject the hypothesis about trust. This result conveys the complicacy of the consultant–client relationship and shows that building a trustful relationship between both parties is hard to accomplish.

Abstract:
Introduction. The paper examines the prospects of management of consulting firms in Ukraine. In the 21st century, there is almost no area of business that cannot be linked to consulting. The purpose of the paper is to study the theoretical and methodological principles and scientific and methodological approaches to the management of consulting firms. Results. An empirical study was conducted in the form of a survey of Ukrainian companies on the use of consulting services. The study was conducted in the fall of 2020 throughout Ukraine. The developed questionnaire contained 21 questions. With a response rate of 24%, 194 valid, completed questionnaires were received, which were processed using descriptive statistics. Respondents are quite satisfied with the consulting services they have purchased, but there is a relatively high proportion (40%) of organizations that question the value for money, and 12% have failed to implement the consultant's offer. When choosing a consultant, the surveyed companies pay attention to three main criteria: the cost of services (34%), professional previous relationships (26%), the reputation of the consultant (18%). When asked why they plan to use consulting, 34% of respondents said that this is necessary due to the expectations of various institutions (banks, international grants, etc.), 36% of respondents plan to hire external consultants because the company is too small to have its own internal staff. each area, and 13% would use external consultants in exceptional cases (crisis, restructuring, large investments). Conclusion. According to the survey, the most common reason why Ukrainian companies turn to management consulting is to increase efficiency and finance (investment, project financing, liquidity, etc.). The challenges posed by the growing pressure of the digital revolution in Ukraine will soon give new impetus to the development of consulting services. Further research will focus on comparing trends in Ukraine with other Eastern European countries.

Abstract:
The article discusses the use of network partnership in the process of interaction between the consultant and the client in the framework of the search, the client’s receipt of investments and further project support. Traditionally, the process of interaction between the client and the consultant is presented in such a way that only these two parties are the main participants in the consultation process. The article discusses the experience of building a multidisciplinary complex consulting process, in which many participants are involved. This experience is based on the practice of the Business Angels of Russia network community. This article analyses the practice of mainly small consulting organisations that are very different from large ones and provide significantly more customised services. The consulting related to investing funds in the client’s business is in the author’s focus. At the same time, only clients belonging to small and medium-sized enterprises naturally stand out in the work. As a rule, they do not seek advice from wellknown and renowned brands in the field of consulting services. As a rule, they do not have enough money for their services, and large consulting firms themselves choose mainly large clients to work with.

Abstract:
The management consulting industry is growing. The industryis also described as being exposed to increased pressure fromthe environment. An interesting question is then how resourcesare managed in management consulting firms in order tosustain competitive advantage. The purpose with this thesis isto investigate how firms in the management consulting industrymanage their resources through the lens of the resourcemanagement framework and if there are any signs of change.Through a multiple case study of the processes in two largemanagement consulting firms, the activity (i.e. the use ofresources) perceived as important for the leveraging ofcompetitive advantage is studied. The findings suggest thatcustomers have a much more central part in the resourcemanagement process than depicted in the resourcemanagement framework. The clearest signs of change refer tothe development of new career paths and an increased globalintegration of competencies.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the interplay between agile and mechanistic management control and the motivation of the employees affected by them, and thereby contribute to the understanding of how management control interplays with motivation. Research question: How does agile and mechanistic management control interplay with employees’ motivation in the management consulting profession? Methodology: Qualitative research with Semi-structured interviews. Seven management consultants from different firms were interviewed. Findings: Agile management control was found to be somewhat more commonly occurring than mechanistic management control among the respondents. Agile management control was seen as more motivating than mechanistic. Personal development was found to be the most prevalent part of intrinsic motivation in this study. Contributions: This paper contributes to the existing literature by offering a perspective of management control’s interplay with motivation specifically for management consultants. This interplay can be seen as being focused on personal development, possibly due to the employees’ motivation to choose this field.

Abstract:

Dessutom används olika metoder i både

upplägg och genomförande av konsultation.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
The purpose of this project was to analyse and quantify the impact that the present operation and future expansion of a specific player of the commercial aviation industry has on TAP. TAP’s individual performance and its competition with this particular player were analysed. A quantitative model was created to measure past and current impact on TAP’s performance, which was also the basis to estimate future impact. A set of surveys was conducted to better understand passenger profiles and main drivers for passenger retention and churn. Based on these analyses, a pack of high-level recommendations was designed to respond to the challenge.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
TAP is facing the full-establishment and expansion of a competitor in the market, which in consequence will result in a negative impact on revenues. The aim of the project was to quantify the past and future impact that this competitor has on TAP and to recommend strategic guidelines to diminish that impact. The analysis are based on analytical models, field work and qualitative research. The results imply that TAP has to take action in the short and long term, with the aim to diminish the negative impact, stimulate profitable markets where TAP has a competitive advantage and customize their offer to capture all the market potential.

Abstract:
In June 2014, Hambrey Consulting successfully responded to a call for tenders for research to undertake a pilot assessment of the potential economic and associated benefits of establishing minimum market landing size (MMLS) in excess of minimum legal landing size (MLS) for shellfish; and to evaluate if such an intervention could be undertaken at a regional level. The project was originally conceived as including 3 case studies, but the scope of the research led us to focus mainly on the trawl and creel fishery for Nephrops prosecuted by the fleet based in Skye and SW Ross. The basic framework for the assessment approach was to: Develop an economic profile of the case study area and its fishing fleet; Review and synthesise existing data on size profile of the catch, the factors that affect size, including costs associated with individual (vessel) actions or strategies to increase the size profile of the catch; Analyse market and market trends, and the prices for different sizes of product; Develop economic models of representative fishing enterprises, taking account of the relationships between costs and returns and the size profile of the catch; Use plausible scenarios to explore likely short term economic consequences of any changes in MMLS; Use yield and utility per recruit analysis to explore possible yield benefits associated with increased MMLS.

This rapid literature review explores how local people’s views and perspectives on their concerns, needs and capabilities (beyond asking about their experiences with aid) have been integrated into the national-level governance mechanisms of humanitarian assistance and development programmes in fragile and conflict-affected settings. There is limited systematic evidence available on this topic. There are a few cases of including civil society in national-level programme or sector governance bodies; there is more documented experience of including local actors in humanitarian response coordination. There is also relevant learning from feedback mechanisms, analysis and research, and people-centred approaches to aid planning and management more generally. The literature highlights the importance of conflict-sensitive approaches underpinned by regular conflict and political economy analysis; consulting with local actors on how they want to communicate and engage, and setting up safe and effective spaces for engagement; investing in long-term partnerships and capacity building to strengthen local organisations; and undertaking participatory, qualitative research that starts from ‘people’s own reading of how their lives are changing over time’ (Daigle, 2022: 15).

Simelton, Elisabeth, Rachmat Mulia, Clement Rigal, Tuan Minh Duong, Phuong Mai Nguyen, Hanna North, and Xuan Hieu Le. Beyond carbon sequestration – local knowledge about tree functions. Case study from male and female Arabica coffee farmers in Vietnam. World Agroforestry, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5716/wp21025.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Estimates of carbon sequestration for timber trees is well documented, while fruit trees are understudied. The few existing estimates indicate that fruit trees and fertiliser management on them, can substantially sequester carbon in coffee monocultures, albeit unlikely to the same extent as timber trees. A carbon investor may thus favour timber. In this light, as programs for planting billions and trillion trees are launched “to save the climate”, a wide range of gender, social, justice and environmental concerns are voiced. To challenge the mitigation perspective, we contrasted two hypothetical tree planting strategies: a mitigation (carbon finance) perspective and a livelihoods-centred (local) perspective and explored what a rapid, gender and social inclusion-oriented livelihoods perspective could bring to the process of tree selection. The survey documents indigenous knowledge of trees’ potential (dis)benefits in coffee agroforestry systems among 106 female and male arabica-growers in northwest Vietnam. The results display many similarities between women and men in term of perceived benefits from trees. Women and men prioritized trees based on their economic benefits, impacts on coffee production and improved soil fertility. However, in determining the preferred species, women considered more factors, including consequences for pest and disease (on host tree or coffee), microclimate regulation and shade provision. These findings resemble those by others from the same region and demonstrate that consulting both women and men can result in a more diverse shortlist of potential trees for agroforestry/afforestation that reflect both genders’ economic and labour contributions to the household. Furthermore, tree planting projects would benefit from seeking collaboration for bundled ecosystem services, rather than merely from carbon finance. Conversely, carbon investors can rely on farmers’ preferences and rest assured that they also contribute to sequestering carbon.

District level baseline survey of family planning program in Uttar Pradesh: Kanpur. Population Council, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1995.1008.

Full text
Abstract:
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has sponsored the Innovations in Family Planning Services Project (under the management of the State Innovations in Family Planning Services Agency, Lucknow). The project aims to reduce fertility through increasing accessibility, improving quality, and generating demand for family planning services. It attempts to achieve its objectives by supporting service innovations in the public and nongovernmental sector and through social marketing of contraceptives. These intervention strategies are expected to increase the couple protection rate of the state in general and of Kanpur Nagar in particular. One of the prerequisites is to carry out a baseline survey in selected districts of Uttar Pradesh. The BSUP is primarily a household survey with an overall target sample size of 37,000 ever married women ages 13–49 years. The Population Council has collaborated with a number of Indian Consulting Organizations (COs) for survey implementation. Each CO has carried out the survey in one or more districts. The baseline survey was initiated in 15 out of the state’s 63 districts. This report pertains to district Kanpur Nagar.

Estimating financial cost to individuals with a food hypersensitivity. Food Standards Agency, December 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.buq453.

Full text
Abstract:
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is a non-ministerial government department within the United Kingdom responsible for protecting public health and protecting consumer interests in relation to food in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Food Hypersensitivities (FHS) is a key priority within the FSA as it is an important food-related health issue with a severe and enduring impact for people living with it. FHS includes individuals living with a food allergy, coeliac disease and food intolerance. It is the responsibility of the FSA to seek ways to understand and reduce avoidable deaths, the negative impact of FHS on both consumers and businesses, and make sure that FHS consumers have access to safe food that is what it says it is on the label, which they can trust. For people with chronic and / or potentially life-threatening FHS, that trust becomes even more important. FHS places both a public health and financial burden on society. According to the FSA’s Food and You 2 Wave 3 Survey(footnote 1), an estimated 800,000 people are living with a clinically diagnosed food allergy, 300,000 with coeliac disease and 1.2 million living with food intolerance and other FHS conditions in the UK. The FSA has invested in a programme of research to understand the economic and societal burden of FHS and to explore how people living with FHS are impacted in their daily lives. The FSA commissioned RSM UK Consulting (RSM), Dr Audrey DunnGalvin from University College Cork and Alizon Draper from the University of Westminster to quantify and monetise the financial burden imposed on people living with FHS through their day-to-day management of the physical risks associated with food allergies, food intolerance and coeliac disease. This is the first study of its kind to consider whether residents in England, Northern Ireland, and Wales who live with any type of FHS condition (food intolerance, coeliac disease or food allergy) results in additional financial burden for their household. About this study The aim of the study was to quantify and monetise the financial burden imposed on households with FHS through the day-to-day management of the physical risks associated with food allergies, food intolerance and coeliac disease, by: comparing the price paid for food between households with at least one adult above 18 years old living with FHS, to households without FHS valuing the direct costs incurred through efforts to manage FHS and remain symptom free (for example, medical and kitchen supplies) monetising indirect costs incurred when having to deal with an FHS condition (for example, lost working days) This study is unique in terms of estimating price differentials for food consumption across different types of FHS and then comparing to a non-FHS comparison group. Previous studies have focused on coeliac disease, specifically the comparison between gluten-free and gluten-containing products, so this study is adding new knowledge to the evidence base.

Report on Norplant® implants in Indonesia. Population Council, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1995.1021.

Full text
Abstract:
At the request of the Indonesian National Family Planning Coordinating Board, the Population Council’s consultant team reviewed issues related to Norplant® implant service delivery in Indonesia and recommended specific areas for new initiatives, improvements, and further research. The team reviewed secondary sources on the subject and visited Indonesia from April 17–28, 1995. They talked with family planning (FP) officials and observers and made field visits to West Java and Yogyakarta. This report reviews important issues facing the national FP program, particularly regarding Norplant insertions and removals. Program approaches are included, as are an outline for a national assessment study that could help Indonesia estimate the magnitude of the implant-removal problem in specific geographic areas and develop a long-term plan for handling removals on a routine basis. The top priorities now are simultaneous efforts to address the current need for implant removals through existing and planned management systems; mobilize resources for a Norplant implant-removal plan of action at the provincial, district, and subdistrict levels; evaluate and monitor removal efforts and impact; and conduct a major national Norplant implant assessment study.
