Abstract:
Objective: To find-out the determinants of malnutrition in children between sixmonths to five years age in Bahawalpur. Study Design: This was an observational descriptive cross – sectional study.Setting: At Paediatric Medicine out – patient department in Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur.. Period: From Feb.2005 to March 2007.Subjects: Eleven hundred children with malnutrition having ages six months to five years. Mainoutcome measures. Determinants of malnutrition in children under – 5 in Bahawalpur. Results: This study consistsof 1100 sick children between the ages six months to five years brought by their parents (mother) to the PediatricMedicine out-patient department in Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur. Only the children with malnutrition(undernutrition) were included in the study population. Mothers of these children were interviewed and clinicalexamination of each child was carried-out to find-out the causes of malnutrition in them. According to Gome’sclassification, 39.45% of them had first degree malnutrition, 37.10%, second degree and 23.45%, third degreemalnutrition. Conclusion: The major causes of malnutrition found in our study population included: Illiteracy; food –fads; poverty; lack of breast-feeding; improper weaning; diarrhea and respiratory diseases. All these factors werestatistically significant.

Abstract:
The ecological fecundity of the northern shore of Lake Victoria was vital to Buganda’s dominance of the interlacustrine region during the pre-colonial period. Despite this, protein-energy malnutrition was notoriously common throughout the twentieth century. This paper charts changes in nutritional illness in a relatively wealthy, food-secure area of Africa during a time of vast social, economic and medical change. In Buganda at least, it appears that both the causation and epidemiology of malnutrition moved away from the endemic societal causes described by early colonial doctors and became instead more defined by individual position within a rapidly modernising economy.

Abstract:
The dynamics of weather variation have overstretched animal protein from already overburdened environment; malnutrition is likely to be on the rise with human population growth projected at 9.7 billion by 2050. This has seen cricket consumption for household food security increasing in the past decade. Cricket (acheta domesticus) farming can contribute positively to solving malnutrition problems being experienced among the riparian communities in the Kenyan Lake Victoria Basin. Cricket farming presents a livelihood diversification strategy that can help buffer rural households against food insecurity and provide an alternative source of income. However, its adoption as an alternative source of protein for improved household food security has remained low among smallholder farmers. The study investigated determinants of acceptability of cricket consumption and its influence on adoption for farming as an alternative source of food. The study employed a mixed methods research approach to collect quantitative and qualitative data from 120 trained cricket farmers from selected riparian counties including Siaya, Kisumu and Homa Bay in Kenyan Victoria basin. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression model were used to summarize quantitative data while content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data by thematic arrangements and similarities across different investigation areas. Based on data analyzed, the results indicated that cultural beliefs, perception and attitude such as cultural value attached to cricket consumption (p = 0.021), crickets are sweet and tender than poultry (p = 0.037) as well as age with a p<0.028, had statistical significance on acceptability to cricket consumption. On the other hand, regression β coefficient of awareness, access and availability were found to have no association with the adoption of cricket farming. The study recommended that: first, the government formulates a policy on farming edible insects as mini-livestock and improved food security. Secondly, further study is needed to determine possible strategies for changing attitude towards cricket consumption for increased adoption by smallholder farmers. Muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) were classified by sex and age at 12 locations on four islands in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Northwest Territories. We classified 147 muskoxen on Bailey Point, southwestern Melville Island, and 92 on northeastern Prince of Wales Island in August 1983. We subsequently classified 5449 muskoxen on western Victoria and Banks islands in July–August 1986, which we used as a basis for evaluating the 1983 samples. The pooled sex ratio for muskoxen ≥ 3 years old was significantly skewed toward females, and the proportion of single bulls was also lower on Bailey Point than on northeastern Prince of Wales Island in August 1983 or on Banks or Victoria islands in July–August 1986. Sexual behaviour was frequently observed at Bailey Point in August 1983, which suggests that both bulls and cows were in breeding condition. Almost no aggressive rutting behaviour was seen at Bailey Point, in contrast to observation of the complete range of sexual and aggressive behaviours on Prince of Wales Island. Above-average (1970–1985) snow depths were experienced from March to May in five of the six winters preceding winter 1982–1983. We suggest that severe winters imposed malnutrition-related mortality on spent bulls. The depleted fat reserves of these bulls apparently could not sustain them during severe and prolonged winters. This kind of winter mortality among breeding bulls likely is higher in areas of high muskox densities where more interactions between bulls during the rut lead to greater energetic costs.

Abstract:
Study and evaluation of the prevalence of measles and its complication in vaccinated and non- vaccinated patients. To evaluate the prevalence of complications of measles among different age groups of children in the pedriatric ward. Clinical description of a case series. Children of different age groups suffering from measles. We have observed 315 measles patients in the pediatric ward of Bahawal Victoria Hospital in Bahawalpur. They were evaluated on the basis of complications. Different complications were observed in children of different age group and gender, and the main complications were encephalitis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, diarrhoea and ear infections. Children of age less than 1 year to 7 years were observed, and it was observed that conjunctivitis, pneumonia and diarrhoea were among the most common complications, while encephalitis and ear infections were rare. Patients admitted to the pedriatric ward having long term complications have a high risk of death when treated. These patients were due to malnutrition and improper vaccination coverage, and improper vaccine storage. Respiratory distress, i.e., pneumonia, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, ear infection and encephalitis, were the most common complications. To reduce the severity of these complications, mechanical ventilation, antibiotics treatment, electrolyte balance should be instituted early in patients with measles.

Dried silver cyprinid (Rastrineobola argentea) has the potential to provide an affordable and accessible food-based strategy to fight malnutrition among Ugandans and enrich diets of the vulnerable persons. However, there is inadequate information on changes in the nutritional content and safety of stored dry silver cyprinid along the local handling chain. This study evaluated the effect of conventionally used packaging on microbial safety and nutrient quality of dry silver cyprinid during storage. Freshly dried silver cyprinid was obtained from stores at four landing sites on Lake Victoria and stored in open and closed gunny bags for 8 weeks. Samples were collected at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of storage and assessed for nutritional and microbial quality. The type of packaging used (open or closed gunny bags) had no significant effect on most nutrient content and microbial safety parameters (p >0.05) except iron content, aflatoxin content, and TVBN content. Open gunny bags had higher aflatoxin content, greater iron degradation and greater variation in TVBN as compared to closed gunny bags throughout the storage duration. The observed difference in some of the quality parameters can be attributed to increased permeability to oxygen and moisture in open gunny bags as compared to closed gunny bags.

Abstract:
Food security entails having sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet dietary needs. The need to optimise nitrogen (N) use for nutrition security while minimising environmental risks in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is overdue. Challenges related to managing N use in SSA can be associated with both insufficient use and excessive loss, and thus the continent must address the ‘too little’ and ‘too much’ paradox. Too little N is used in food production (80% of countries have N deficiencies), which has led to chronic food insecurity and malnutrition. Conversely, too much N load in water bodies due mainly to soil erosion, leaching, limited N recovery from wastewater, and atmospheric deposition contributes to eutrophication (152 Gg N year–1 in Lake Victoria, East Africa). Limited research has been conducted to improve N use for food production and adoption remains low, mainly because farming is generally practiced by resource-poor smallholder farmers. In addition, little has been done to effectively address the ‘too much’ issues, as a consequence of limited research capacity. This research gap must be addressed, and supportive policies operationalised, to maximise N benefits, while also minimising pollution. Innovation platforms involving key stakeholders are required to address N use efficiency along the food supply chain in SSA, as well as other world regions with similar challenges.

The research method uses a type of qualitative research with a traditional literature review. Abstract:
This book examines the practical techniques humanitarians have used to manage and measure starvation, from Victorian “scientific” soup kitchens to space-age, high-protein foods. Tracing the evolution of these techniques since the start of the nineteenth century, the book argues that humanitarianism is not a simple story of progress and improvement, but rather is profoundly shaped by sociopolitical conditions. Aid is often presented as an apolitical and technical project, but the way humanitarians conceive and tackle human needs has always been deeply influenced by culture, politics, and society. These influences extend down to the most detailed mechanisms for measuring malnutrition and providing sustenance. As the book shows, over the past century, the humanitarian approach to hunger has redefined food as nutrients and hunger as a medical condition. Aid has become more individualized, medicalized, and rationalized, shaped by modernism in bureaucracy, commerce, and food technology. The book focuses on the gains and losses that result, examining the complex compromises that arise between efficiency of distribution and quality of care. It concludes that humanitarian groups have developed an approach to the empty stomach that is dependent on compact, commercially produced devices and is often paternalistic and culturally insensitive.
