Abstract:
In Islam, Muslim clerics are the heirs of the prophets. They represent a continuation of the prophetic traditions and functions in the Muslim community. These Muslim clerics are known as mallams in Ghana. Indeed, as heirs of the prophets, the mallams contribute towards promoting the wellbeing of the people in both the sacred and profane spaces. However, those clerics who participate in the production of spiritual goods and services are the only ones the general public refers to as mallams. The Ghanaian populace believes that the title mallam is the exclusive preserve of those who have the ability to manipulate the course of events as mallam. As a result, Ghanaians often ascribe ‘the unexpected’ to the works of the mallams. The mallam is, therefore, generally perceived as an exclusive agent of the spiritual. This paper explores aspects of the activities of the mallam in Ghana, using the Wa Muslim community as the site of exploration. The paper argues that although some of them render many spiritual services, dissemination of Islamic heritage is the main function of the mallam. The paper explains that the influence of the mallam in the past and their presence in the media in contemporary times together contribute to the perception about the mallam in Ghana today. It concludes that exclusively limiting the title to the spiritualist only is, therefore, not sustainable.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. The James R. Mallory lecture in Canadian Studies is given each November at McGill University. David Smith presented the 2003 lecture a few months after the death of James Mallory at age 87. Smith argues that Mallory's influence on Canadian political science is great because the range of his publications is enormous. Be it, for instance, about federalism, the institutions of Parliament, bureaucracy, and the courts—there is scarcely a topic in the syllabus of a traditional Canadian politics course on which he did not write. Mallory injected a legal sensibility to his study of politics: he was one of the first scholars to raise the alarm at the growth of concentrated executive power and at Parliament's inadequate resources to scrutinize its use. Nonetheless, Smith maintains that Mallory would not welcome the emergence of Officers of Parliament as a fourth branch of government. In his explication and interpretation of the constitution, Mallory became, Smith suggests, Canada's Walter Bagehot.Résumé.

Gillespie, Grant D. "Hybridization, Introgression, and Morphometric Differentiation between Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and Grey Duck (Anas superciliosa) in Otago, New Zealand." Auk 102, no. 3 (July 1, 1985): 459–69. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/auk/102.3.459.

Abstract:
Abstract Small numbers of Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) were introduced into New Zealand from Great Britain and North America over 100 years ago. Both sexes have undergone differentiation in size and plumage characters as a consequence of hybridization with the indigenous Grey Duck (A. superciliosa). Pure forms of both species, as documented by early descriptions, appear to be disappearing, particularly the Grey Duck. In Otago, the Mallard and Grey Duck are introgressively hybridizing, and the majority of intergrades are Mallard-like in appearance. Separation of Mallards, hybrid birds, and Grey Ducks was achieved using a stepwise cluster analysis of mensural characters. The observed morphometric differentiation was not continuous throughout the Otago population, and a total of 5 discontinuities (groups of morphologically similar birds) were distinguished: male Mallards, female Mallards, Grey Ducks, and 2 groups of hybrid birds. The use of bivariate scattergrams of skull length and eye-lens weight provided the most useful illustration of the distinctions among Mallard, hybrid, and Grey Duck populations. As a consequence of hybridization, two morphologically distinct hybrid populations have been produced: one resembles the Grey Duck and the other the Mallard. This situation is discussed in relation to the two hybrid forms of the Marianas Mallard (A. oustaleti). The Mallard was so successful in newly created agricultural habitat that by 1958 this species constituted 53% of the Mallard-Grey Duck population. Prior to 1958 the observed hybrid frequency was less than 3% and the reduction in the proportion of the Grey Duck most probably was the result of habitat reduction. In 1977 the Mallard comprised 82% of the Mallard-Grey Duck population, and there was concern over the number of pure Grey Ducks remaining in Otago. By 1981-1982 levels of hybridization, based on plumage analysis, had reached 51%, and the proportion of pure Grey Ducks had dropped to 4.5%, which is below the level suggested for the maintenance of a species. In the absence of reproductive isolation or antihybridization mechanisms between these two species, the Mallard and hybrid populations represent a potential threat to the conservation of the New Zealand Grey Duck.

Dating of the site using C14 Analysis showed that the site is about 3550 ±130 BP and 2710 ±170 BP and 2281± 46 BP. The point of this site, besides of its plenty artifacts that signifying occupied-densely site of some hills, the site is also located nearby caves of Maros. From the perspective of periodization, Mallawa site relatively younger compared to occupancy period in Maros caves. It is likely to say that the occupancy of Mallawa cave is the further stage in development of past life that characterized by its material culture remains. Several pottery findings possesses various of interesting forms and ornaments. In this research has also found several interesting findings such as pottery fragments, beads and stone artifacts. The excavation brings out more findings then the surficial findings. Through XRD analysis, SEM and also, XRF of the pottery and soil sample shows that Mallawa pottery were made and produced by the Mallawa themselves and the people surrounding based on the fact that the pottery contains the same mineral with the soil that surrounding this site.

Abstract:
The aims of this research was to identify the qualitative and quantitative difference of the phenotypes of native mallard and Muscovy, and Muscovy the genetic diversity between Muscovy and mallard using RFLP method with growth hormone primer (GH) gene. The materials were 30-week old male and female ducks from 5 strains—Magelang, Mojosari and Tegal ducks, white-feathered, and black and white-feathered Muscovy. Muscovy Completely Randomized Design was used to analyze parameters 5 strains of ducks based on gender and with 5 replications. The parameters measured were local and Muscovy duck phenotypes and genetic diversity (number of alleles) based on GH gene, heterozygosity and genetic distance. Qualitative properties were analyzed descriptively and quantitative properties were analyzed using Anova followed by HSD in case of significant differences, whereas RFLP analysis was used to determine the allele frequencies, genotype frequencies, genetic diversity, and genetic distance of local ducks. Result showed phenotypic differences between Anas platyrhynchos and Cairina moschata. The dominant feather colorof Muscovy was black and white while mallard was brown. The bill color Muscovy Muscovy was pink with dark brown but black in mallard. The dominant shank’s color in both Muscovy and mallard was black. Body size of mallard was larger than that of Muscovy Muscovy, and Magelang ducks weigherd more than Tegal and Mojosari Duck. The PCR-RFLP results showed lower heterozygosity of mallard compared to Muscovy based on GH gene, and genetic distance of the Tegal duck was closer to Mojosari and Magelang ducks, whereas Magelang and Mojosari ducks had a considerable genetic distance based on the GH gene.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1969, American artist Robert Mallary (1917–1997) coined the term ‘transductive art’ to describe an approach to art based on the notion of receiving energy from one system and retransmitting it, often in a different form, to another. Long before the realm of techno-art became a recognizable construct, Mallary was interested in a system of relationships, seeking in his words, ‘an element of perfection’ in combinations of materials and technologies to make ‘a beautiful whole’. From his experiments with the Mexican Muralists to assemblage and Neo-Dada sculpture, and finally, his synergistic relationship with the computer, Mallary’s work addressed the place of the human in a technological world. He instigated one of the first American computer art curriculums within a fine art department, developing early examples of software created by artists for use by artists. His espousal of the digital to become a ‘Supermedium’, led him to conceptualise a ‘spatial-synesthetic art’, a multi-media immersive environment combining three-dimensional projected visual elements, motion, and sound. Although unrealised, this system anticipated future VR/virtual reality developments such as the ‘Cave Automatic Virtual Environment’ (CAVE™) system developed at the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1992. The current review will therefore argue, by example, that Mallary deserves a prominent position in the history of techno-art, and by virtue of both the several emerging influences he had the insight to recognise and bring together and his numerous subsequent contributions as simultaneously an artist, a theorist, and an educator.

Abstract:
On the afternoon of Friday April 20, 1883, attorney Kate Kane doused Judge James Mallory with a glass of water in a Milwaukee courtroom. Kane's frustrations were deep. That morning Mallory had reassigned one of her clients to another attorney, despite the fact that this client had specifically requested Kane. This time it was to Peter J. Somers, who had recently worked for Mallory's re-election. After the incident, Kane would announce, “Judge Mallory has been trying to drive me out of this court; he has continuously insulted and misused me, but I bore it.” “Today,” she explained, “I wanted to insult Judge Mallory just where he had insulted me—in open court.” She succeeded; Mallory was furious. Wiping the water from his brow, the irate judge shouted, “Arrest that woman,” and cited Kane for contempt of court. She was immediately apprehended and hauled off to the local jail, where she would stew for days. “I shall stay here for ten years before I pay that fine,” Kane vowed, defiantly. The incident, which imperiled Kane's legal career in Milwaukee, also reveals critical tensions in women's claims on full citizenship that were reflected in battles over professional membership, legal and sexual equality, and political inclusion.

Abstract:
Confined alone in a cell in New York's Fort Lafayette in the heat of the summer of 1865, former Confederate naval secretary Stephen R. Mallory had little to do but reflect on the fate of the defeated Confederacy. Convinced that his life might be forfeit if the United States government made good on its threat to try him for treason, Mallory composed a lengthy letter to President Andrew Johnson petitioning for a pardon and seeking to explain his views on the demise of the Confederacy and the fate of the states' right to secede from the Union. While Mallory stressed his opposition to disunion in 1861, on the grounds of its inexpediency, he admitted that he had placed loyalty to his state above his duty as a citizen of the United States. He had “regarded the commands of my state as decisive of my path of duty; and I followed where she led.” Nonetheless, Mallory went on to disclaim his belief in the principle of secession in very striking terms, describing the death of secession in the crucible of the Civil War as the result of a trial by battle. Mallory never specifically denied secession's constitutionality; instead, he told Johnson that because he “recognize[ed] the death [of the Confederacy] as the will of Almighty God, I regard and accept His dispensation as decisive of the questions of slavery and secession.”

Abstract:
Mallard ducks are important natural hosts of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses and many strains circulate in this reservoir and cause little harm. Some strains can be transmitted to other hosts, including chickens, and cause respiratory and systemic disease. Rarely, these highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses cause disease in mallards, while chickens are highly susceptible. The long co-evolution of mallard ducks with influenza viruses has undoubtedly fine-tuned many immunological host–pathogen interactions to confer resistance to disease, which are poorly understood. Here, we compare innate responses to different avian influenza viruses in ducks and chickens to reveal differences that point to potential mechanisms of disease resistance. Mallard ducks are permissive to LPAI replication in their intestinal tissues without overtly compromising their fitness. In contrast, the mallard response to HPAI infection reflects an immediate and robust induction of type I interferon and antiviral interferon stimulated genes, highlighting the importance of the RIG-I pathway. Ducks also appear to limit the duration of the response, particularly of pro-inflammatory cytokine expression. Chickens lack RIG-I, and some modulators of the signaling pathway and may be compromised in initiating an early interferon response, allowing more viral replication and consequent damage. We review current knowledge about innate response mediators to influenza infection in mallard ducks compared to chickens to gain insight into protective immune responses, and open questions for future research.

Abstract:

An observation of a female Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) avoiding unpaired drakes, in breeding season, until reuniting with her mate after audio recognition of the rähb call. This observation supports the supposition that this vocalization by the male Mallard is a response to separation from the female and functions as a contact call in mate recognition.

Abstract:
Pair formation in ducks is thought to be influenced by the acquisition of breeding plumage, the occurrence of courtship display, or both. We examined the frequency of pair formation in Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca carolinensis), and Northern Shoveler (Spatula clypeata) in the central valley of California in relation to the frequencies of male attainment of breeding plumage and courtship display. Predictions related to two hypotheses are: (1) the timing of pair formation is directly related to the attainment of breeding (definitive alternate) plumage by males, and (2) frequencies of courtship display are highest during pair formation. Most female Mallard were paired by the end of October, with >80% in pairs by early December. Of Northern Shoveler, 90% were paired by early January and 90% of female Green-winged Teal were paired by early February. The highest rates of courtship display by Mallard were observed during October through November, by Northern Shoveler in November, and by Green-winged Teal in November through January. Courtship display was, therefore, relatively frequent at the same time as pair formation for all three species. Northern Shoveler spent less time in courtship display than the other two species. Most (90%) male Mallard had acquired alternate plumage by mid-November, Northern Shoveler by early February, and Green-winged Teal by mid-December. Thus, timing of pair formation coincided with timing of attainment of breeding plumage in Mallard and Green-winged Teal but not Northern Shoveler.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Mallory-Weiss tear is mainly located across the gastro-esophageal mucosal junction and presents with upper gastro-intestinal bleed of less severity. Haemorrhage frequently ceases spontaneously.Aims and Objective: This study was undertaken to establish the incidence, clinical and endoscopic profile of patients with Mallory- Weiss tear.Materials and Methods: Six hundred patients presenting with acute upper gastro-intestinal (UGI) bleed were included in the study. All patients underwent UGI endoscopy after achieving haemodynamic stability, usually within 24 hours. Cases with Mallory Weiss tear were identified and their clinical presentation, endoscopic findings, outcomes during hospitalization including rebleeding and mortality were studied. Results: Twenty eight (4.6%) patients out of six hundred acute upper gastro-intestinal bleed were diagnosed with Mallory-Weiss tear. Fourteen (50%) patients gave history of prior vomiting or preceeding retching. Only two patients (7.1%) presented with shock. The most common co-morbid condition was excessive alcohol consumption. Eighteen (64.3%) patients had no active bleeding during UGI endoscopy. All patients except four presented with a single tear with mean length of two cms. Blood transfusion was needed in eight (28.6%) patients only. Only one patient had re-bleeding. Average hospital admission was three days. No mortality was recorded in 7 days and 28 days of follow ups. Conclusions: Mallory-Weiss tear is not an uncommon cause of UGI bleeding nowadays and its incidence is rising every year. Hemorrhage frequently ceases spontaneously and conservative management is sufficient in many instances. When endoscopic findings reveal active haemorrhage, various endoscopic hemostatic techniques can be used.Asian Journal of Medical Sciences Vol.8(6) 2017 19-23

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract We investigated patterns and causes of variation in clutch sizes in a guild of five species of temperate-nesting dabbling ducks (Mallard [Anas platyrhynchos], Northern Pintail [“pintail,” A. acuta], Gadwall [A. strepera], Blue-winged Teal [“teal,” A. discors], and Northern Shoveler [“shoveler,” A. clypeata]) during 1993-1995 in the Prairie Pothole Region of midcontinental North America. Clutch sizes (mean ± SE) were largest for teal (10.80 ± 0.03), followed in descending order by those of shoveler (10.31 ± 0.05), Gadwall (9.92 ± 0.04), Mallard (8.91 ± 0.04), and pintail (7.66 ± 0.06). In Mallard, pintail, and shoveler, predicted clutch sizes at onset of nesting exhibited minimal variation. Clutch sizes of Gadwall and teal displayed statistically significant variation among years at onset of nesting; pintail clutch sizes showed significant variation late in the nesting season. Clutch sizes declined seasonally in all species. Declines in clutch sizes of teal and shoveler were approximately linear; whereas clutch sizes of Mallard, pintail, and Gadwall usually declined at progressively decreasing rates. Linear declines in teal and shoveler clutches suggest that those species experienced greater difficulty securing lipids for egg production late in the nesting season than did Mallard, pintail, and Gadwall. That disparity may result because egg-laying female teal and shoveler feed almost exclusively on animal foods, which are primarily protein; whereas female Mallard, pintail, and Gadwall consume more carbohydrate-rich plant foods. Our findings, when examined in context with existing information, suggest that interspecific variation in clutch sizes results from innate differences in several traits—including body size, diet, timing of lipid acquisition, and nesting—all of which can affect the amount of lipid available for egg production. Temperate-nesting dabbling ducks have evolved traits that facilitate laying of large clutches early in the nesting season, because risk of mortality is lower among early-hatched young. Annual differences in clutch sizes of all five species were not significant when effects of annual variation in nest-initiation dates were accounted for, reflecting the key role of environmental influences on intraspecific variation in clutch sizes among years.

Abstract:
The kinematic characteristics of a bird's walk vary according to whether the species is cursorial or not. To increase their speed, running birds increase the frequency of their movements, whereas non-running birds preferentially increase the amplitude. Previous studies have shown that these differences are accompanied by differences in posture; however, the observations were carried out on different species. Do these differences correspond to morphological differences linked to the history of the particular species, or do they reflect more effective solutions from a mechanical point of view? Two breeds of the duck Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos, the mallard and the Indian runner, which have different locomotor behaviours, are compared. The mallard is a dabbling duck with the typical horizontal duck posture, while the Indian runner is a terrestrial duck that carries its trunk very erect. The kinematic characteristics of the walks of both breeds were studied. The observed differences in posture between the mallard and the Indian runner have repercussions in the kinematic features of locomotion. The strategies used to increase speed differ in the two breeds: the mallard increases the amplitude of its movements, like other non-running birds, while the Indian runner increases the frequency of its movements, as cursorial birds do. Thus, behavioural adaptation to terrestrial locomotion is associated with functional adaptation (upright posture) that permits a more effective mechanical solution without requiring obvious morphological modifications.

Abstract:
The authors consider alcohol disease (AD) as an independent disease, the pathogenesis of which passes 3 stages: episodic alcohol intoxication, drunkenness and alcoholism. In the last 2 stages, severe changes in organs and tissues develop. In this case, Mallory bodies appear in the liver, which is considered to be a marker of chronic alcohol intoxication (CAI). They are observed in most patients with alcoholism and very rarely in those suffering from alcoholism. The authors believe that the alcoholic hyaline Mallory bodies, appearing in the liver and other organs in CAI, is an autoantigen to which the body responds with an autoimmune inflammatory response that is not curable. Therefore, drunkenness, in which there are no Mallory bodies, is curable when alcohol is consumed within the basal metabolism of the liver and treated by therapists, and the treatment of alcoholism is futile. Therefore, the problem of CAI can be solved only with the active treatment of the stage of drunkenness by therapists with the participation of psychiatrists.

AbstractWe collected unincubated eggs from wild Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Gadwall (A. strepera), Blue-winged Teal (A. discors), and Northern Shoveler (A. clypeata) nests and artificially incubated them at 37.5°C. Average incubation lengths of Mallard, Gadwall, and Northern Shoveler eggs did not differ from their wild-nesting counterparts, but artificially incubated Blue-winged Teal eggs required an additional 1.7 days to hatch, suggesting that wild-nesting teal incubated more effectively. A small sample of Mallard, Gadwall, and Northern Shoveler eggs artificially incubated at 38.3°C hatched 1 day sooner, indicating that incubation temperature affected incubation length. Mean incubation length of Blue-winged Teal declined by 1 day for each 11-day delay in nesting, but we found no such seasonal decline among Mallards, Gadwalls, or Northern Shovelers. There is no obvious explanation for the seasonal reduction in incubation length for Blue-winged Teal eggs incubated in a constant environment, and the phenomenon deserves further study.
