Abstract:
“In addressing the issues of cross-border transport and mobility, the CROSSMOBY project and this book make a significant contribution to what the European Union has been calling for several years: to achieve a seamless mobility system in order to strengthen European cohesion and integration. Creating the conditions for structuring an effective mobility system is also a prerequisite for regional economic growth, territorial cohesion and the development of the potential of cross-border regions. Economic development and job creation in the border regions also depend on the benefits that border regions derive from cross-border trade. Improving the supply and quality of rail, road and water links and services also contributes to improving the quality of life of the inhabitants and making these areas more attractive for tourism”. Manko, Katina. Ding Dong! Avon Calling! Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190499822.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Avon Lady was a woman who sold cosmetics door-to-door and earned commissions on her sales. In the 1950s, she became famous in a long-running advertising campaign that featured a two-chime doorbell, “Ding Dong!,” followed by the greeting “Avon Calling!” At that time, more than 250,000 women worked as Avon Ladies, and together they represented the largest female direct sales force in the world. Avon began as the California Perfume Company in 1886. Its founder, David McConnell, had sought to provide women with an independent business opportunity largely hoping to soften the seedy reputation of itinerant peddlers. When the company created the Avon brand of cosmetics in the 1930s, changing its name to Avon Products in 1939, it stood as a leader in the direct selling industry and the only company to hire women exclusively as its representatives. This history explores the business of those representatives and the way they were managed. In the second half of the twentieth century, Avon became the largest direct sales company in the United States, spurred by a growing white suburban market. Avon hesitated until the late 1960s to develop recruiting and sales in the African American market, but by the 1970s it was regarded as a leader in affirmative action programs to diversify its workplace and promote women in management. Still, Avon’s executive suite remained a male preserve until Andrea Jung became its first female CEO in 1999. Although Avon closed its doors in 2016, it had earned a solid reputation as a company by women, and for women.

Abstract:
Using Emily Dickinson’s well-known poem about ‘female self-portrait-as-male’ as a reference, this chapter examines issues of rage, gender prison, marriage and agency-via-writing. The entrapped Hedda and the play’s obsession with guns—ostensibly owned by General Gabler, flaunted and then suicidally used by Hedda—testifies to a displaced or even ‘stolen’ phallic power, now reconceived as rage. The notion of another male power, writing, is prophetically upended when Hedda burns Løvborg’s manuscript on the ‘History of the Future,’ calling it her ‘child,’: and ultimately also killing both herself and her unborn fetus. Hedda’s story is as much about ‘doing’ as it is about constraints, and so her experience and her acts become a genuine ‘history of the future’: how a caged woman breaks free. Hedda Gabler is thus literature as ideological utterance, bringing a culture’s arrangements to visibility in a way that so-called objective discourse—be it history or philosophy—cannot easily manage.

Abstract:
Edward Shils was an important figure in twentieth century social theory, and a true transatlantic thinker who divided his time between the University of Chicago and the U.K. He was friends with many important thinkers in other fields, such as Michael Polanyi and Saul Bellow. He became known to sociologists through his brief collaboration with Talcott Parsons, but his own thinking diverged both from Parsons and conventional sociology. He developed but never finalized a comprehensive image of human society made up of personal, civic, and sacred bonds. But much of his thought was focused on conflicts: between intellectuals and their societies, between tradition and modernity, ideological conflict, and conflicts within the traditions of the modern liberal democratic state. This book explores the thought of Shils, his relations to key figures, his key themes and ideas, and his abiding interests in such topics as the academic tradition and universities. Together, the chapters provide the most comprehensive picture of Shils as a thinker, and explain his continuing relevance.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter, focusing on transatlantic Quaker women’s autobiographical writings between 1650 and 1800, explores the ways in which these Spiritual Mothers prophetically performed and sustained George Fox’s calling for an embodied spirit theology. Faced with impending, male-inscribed censorship on their female body/text, these women resisted patriarchal control and emigrated to the ‘Holy Experiment’ of early America. Their separate and privatized Women’s Meetings became a dynamic network for channelling female prophecy and agency in the colonies. Quaker women established a radical literary tradition, locating autobiography as the new site of prophecy and the semiotic voice in the eighteenth century. Writing from the female body as from the body collective, these women thus created a ‘New Word’ and simultaneously expanded the boundaries of gender and prophecy in the ‘New World’.

Abstract:
This chapter details the respective backgrounds of the two preachers under discussion, highlighting the similarities in their life stories—particularly their shared frustrations growing up as ambitious, talented young men in the rural South. Their youths were defined by the tensions between family survival and an individual sense of calling, between agricultural labor and adventure, and between physical hunger and the thirst for deeper meaning in life. Moreover, the laws and culture of the Jim Crow South also held sway over both their lives, and made Claude Williams's youth at once very similar to, yet completely separate from, Owen Whitfield's experience. Both men would, however, come to the same religious calling as they came of age.

Rentz, DCF. Tettigoniidae of Australia Volume 1. CSIRO Publishing, 1985. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643105300.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume deals with the shield-backed katydids, the Tettigoniinae, covering 17 genera and 72 species. The use of tribes has been disregarded until generic classification is made on a worldwide basis. Introductory chapters provide a wealth of information about the zoogeography of the subfamily, and on the habitats and biologies of the insects. Dr Rentz has also used oscillograms of the katydids' calling songs to effectively distinguish similar species. Other sections deal with the terminology, collecting and preservation of specimens.

Abstract:
This brief conclusion brings together threads from several previous chapters. It begins with a consideration of the independent game The End Is Nigh, a recent postapocalyptic game that contains a soundtrack by the duo Ridiculon consisting of remixed classical works. It then reflects on ways in which the cultural barriers between classical music and video games have weakened in popular culture, emphasizing that games are increasingly recognized for their capability to tell meaningful stories, produce insightful political and cultural commentary, and make artistic statements. It closes by calling attention to the arguably elitist cultural spheres in which biases that favor classical music persist.

Abstract:
The Conclusion elaborates on the book’s substantive and theoretical implications. In terms of global financial regulation, it draws lessons about international soft law in a climate of rising anti-expertise disdain and offers recommendations for improving representation in the transnational arenas where financial soft law is made. Moving beyond the politics of finance, the chapter probes the limits of its argument, considering other empirical domains such as labor and environmental regulations. The chapter ends by exploring the more general theoretical findings of the book, calling on scholars of international relations, comparative politics, and international law to rethink the interaction of institutions, actors, and power.

Abstract:
Representations of animals in traditional Chinese painting are among the oldest known motifs and are filled with rich symbolic implications. Animal paintings make animals a part of the harmonious existence of all living beings in the universe. To the Chinese, animals are more than merely beasts in nature; they are living symbols with philosophical, historical, and metaphorical associations. This explains why in early Chinese painting animals are typically portrayed with distinct attitudes or in particular poses, for example, dragons emerging from the clouds, tigers roaring with the wind, cranes calling toward heaven, carp leaping above the waves, and minnows darting playfully among water weeds. Many of these early conceptual depictions of animals were directly linked to the ancient Chinese ...

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 1 describes the liberal tradition of economics, encapsulated in John Stuart Mill’s account of the market as a ‘community of advantage’ in which individuals cooperate for mutual benefit, pursuing their respective interests, as they perceive them. This favourable view of economic freedom has often been presented in terms of ‘neoclassical’ theories that assume that individuals make rational choices based on stable, context-independent preferences. By calling this assumption into question, recent work in behavioural economics poses a challenge to accepted methods of doing normative analysis in economics and to the liberal tradition more generally. Chapter 1 introduces this challenge and gives a preliminary sketch of how the book will respond to it.

Abstract:
In a crisis and its aftermath, public health officials may have the opportunity to achieve lasting, positive reforms. There are three steps to such success. First, by responding swiftly and effectively to the immediate challenge, agencies establish credibility with key audiences. Second, at the right moment, backed by thoughtful analysis, leaders are able to provide a coherent explanation of what happened, revealing the need for further action to prevent the problem from recurring or growing worse. Third, officials jump into the fray to make the case for change. Successful advocacy can involve calling key decision-makers, working with journalists, writing op/eds, and developing alliances with key advocates in the public and private sectors.
