Abstract:
Visual art is dynamically developed in Malaysia. The opening of many art galleries shows that people are more receptive to the visual arts as a part of their community. These collisions create the art sector as a career field. This phenomenon encouraged artists to exhibit their artworks in the gallery and economically increased the numbers of art collectors as buyers to support the art scene and build a new bridge of connection between artist, gallery, and buyer. There is interest growing yet little research in this area has been discovered. This research is to identify the relationship between the artist, gallery, and buyer which is related to the role, art activity involved, and economic factors based on the Islamic perspectives. These relations are common and have become the norm in the social environment of visual arts. Furthermore, the role, art activity involved, and economic factor between the relationship of the artist, gallery, and buyer are rarely been discussed. The gap identification will occur by using the qualitative method through observations on the content analysis. This research has the potential to extend the understanding of the relationship between the artist, gallery, and buyer from the Islamic perspective.

Abstract:
“Antara Dua Darjat” is a classic Malay movie written, directed, and acted by Malaysia’s legendary artist Tan Sri P. Ramlee. Loosely translated into English as “Between Two Classes”, this 1960 film chronicles the social class differences between two families; hence leading to endless misery. The author does not intend to elaborate on the two ‘social classes’ as depicted in the film, and would rather discuss ‘the two classes’ in the vehicle safety scenario in Malaysia; so that the latter can be deliberated and resolved in the best manner.

Historical records prove that printmaking was a medium of communication in various civilizations in Egypt, Japan, and Europe before it was elevated as one of the disciplines of painting. Penang was a popular location for this creative industry sector in the early stages. This study looks chronologically as much as possible at the organization of printmaking exhibitions in Malaysia from the 1960s until 2000. The activities organized by private art galleries play a significant role in the career of artists. The objective of this study is to chronologically document the organization of printmaking exhibitions by the National Art Gallery, private art galleries, and artist groups. Data collection methods through various gallery publication materials have been carried out to complete this study.

Low, Yvonne Yanmei. "Women Artists: Becoming Professional in Singapore, Malaya and Indonesia." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/13843.

Abstract:
This is a woman-centred study that examines women’s art: art which had enabled women artists to become professionals in a male-dominated art world, at specific historical moments of present day Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. This thesis argues for the need to re-evaluate women’s contributions in nationalist and modernist art discourses, so as to include perspectives of women’s creative and intellectual developments in what were undeniably male-dominated professional spheres. Although the issues of gender disparity and women’s absence in history are not in itself new, they remain prevalent. For this dissertation, I have employed the recover and revise strategy in the examination of historical records and visual materials. I argue that any meaningful discussion on the issue of gender disparity in the professional art activity must take into consideration historical factors. In my study, I have juxtaposed the ideological positioning of women artists in nationalist narratives with the recovered histories of women artists undertaking creative work. I do this to show how precisely women artists were written into and out of history to serve nationalist agendas. I have further used the concept of public sphere as a theoretical frame to exemplify and illuminate the criticality of women’s historical roles and place in the nascent art worlds of Singapore and Malaysia (then Malaya) and Indonesia. By tracing the historical development of the widening public sphere, it is possible to observe that women were always within rather than outside of the process. Second, it is possible to observe the different terms on which women acted in the male-dominated public sphere. Under the purview of established ideologies on art professionalism, women artists asserted their creative authority in the following ways: by transforming institutionalized visual language and institutionalized processes, and by creating new public sites for women. This study shows that women, often deemed “missing”, have always been a part of this enlarging process of the socio-cultural sphere even though their art did not attain the recognition or accolades that their male colleagues had. In their pursuit for an artist-existence, women faced cultural and ideological challenges. Their absence in colonial and anti-colonial histories is in part implicated by the nature of their struggles for women’s emancipation and their politicized positions, and in part by the restrictions they faced when participating in anti-colonial, liberation movements and national politics within the public sphere. The manifestations of cultural nationalism further restricted women’s participation in the public spheres and contravened the aspirations of women artists. By re-examining the roles women played in these countries, this thesis has identified the structures that restricted the participation of women artists, and the ways in which subsequent historiography reproduced their absence in historical narratives. As a preliminary exploration of women’s art based on comparable historical circumstances in then Malaya, Singapore and Indonesia, this thesis hopes to posit a model to uncover forgotten histories of women artists and to recover their subjectivity without necessarily separating them from their male counterparts, or inserting them into a separate discourse.

Abstract:
Illusions of Democracy: Malaysian Politics and People offers an up-to-date and broad analysis of the contemporary state of Malaysian politics and society. Transcending disciplinary boundaries, it offers a look at Malaysian politics not only through the lens of political science but also anthropology, cultural studies, international relations, political economy and legal studies touching on both overlooked topics in Malaysian political life as well as the emerging trends which will shape Malaysia’s future. Covering silat martial arts, Malaysia’s constitutional identity, emergency legislation, the South China Sea dilemma, ISIS discourse, zakat payment, the fallout from the 1MDB scandal and Malaysia’s green movement, Illusions of Democracy charts the complex and multi-faceted nature of political life in a semi-authoritarian state, breaking down the illusions which keep it functioning, to uncover the mechanisms which really underlie the paradoxical longevity of Malaysia’s political, economic and social system.

Abstract:
This paper presents a synthesis of the new rock art mapping project in the Kinta Valley of West Malaysia. Through our collaboration with Kinta Valley Watch, we have successfully located more than 30 new rock art sites between 2019 and June 2021. The rock art is represented by both red and black paintings, with a wide variety of motifs including anthropomorph, zoomorph, botanic, watercraft, weapon, animal rider, handprint, geometric shape, line art, and other abstract design. This discovery is instrumental to the contemporary rock art research in Malaysia and demonstrated a collective effort in rock art research through long-term collaboration with the local stakeholders.
