Abstract:
Jawi writings began to show their role in the Malay Land since the entry of Islam into the archipelago. However, at this time Jawi writings seem to have been marginalized by Rumi or Latin writings. This condition is inversely proportional to what happens when Malay (Jawi writing) reaches a high level in its time. At that time Christian priests had to translate the Bible into Malay so they could spread their religion in Malay lands. Whereas at present, Muslims must transliterate the Qur'an into Latin letters so that Muslims can read it in Malay lands. This fact shows that the Malays have experienced a setback in the intellectual tradition that was once possessed in the form of Jawi writing. This research aims to find out the role of Jawi writings in the past and what must be done to safeguard one of the valuable intellectual traditions of Malay Islam. The results show that currently Jawi writing has become a rare commodity in the Indonesian Malay world. While neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Brunei still retain Jawi writing through their use on street names, buildings and other public facilities. The Indonesian Malay world community is more familiar with Latin writing than Jawi writing. Therefore, systematic efforts are needed to reintroduce and maintain the treasury of Jawi writing to the younger generation in the Indonesian Malay world.

Abstract:
This article discusses the policies of British administrators towards the Malays’ coconut cultivation as a commercial crop for export purposes. In commercial coconut cultivation for export purposes, the British administrators not only refrained from hindering but also encouraged the Malays to continuously plant coconuts. However, the British administration’s policies towards Malays on coconut cultivation is not detailed in past writings. On the contrary, previous writings only focused on British effort in commercialising coconut products and the socio-economic effects resulting from the development of coconut cultivation. Therefore, this study will concentrate on the British administrators’ policies towards Malays coconut cultivation, why the British administrators adopted such a policies and the efforts made to ensure that Malays continue to cultivate coconuts. This writing argues that the British administrators endeavored to encourage and influence the Malays to continue planting coconuts in order to diversify agricultural products for export, thus reducing dependence on rubber cultivation and subsequently increasing income through exports. Additionally, this effort aimed to meet the needs of the manufacturing sector within Malaya itself. The British administrators’ efforts to promote coconut cultivation among the Malays were not only through positive encouragement but also implemented through coercion. This writing uses a historical approach, specifically the method of analysing primary sources in the form of official records of the British administrators, such as the Year Book And Manual of Statistics, Malayan Agricultural Journal, Federated Malay States Gazette Agricultural Bulletin of the Straits and Federated Malay States, and other related records.

Abstract:
Turkey is the heir to the Ottoman Islamic Caliphate, extending significant influence on Muslims worldwide. All aspects of the Turkish socio-culture will, directly and indirectly, influence the socio-culture of Muslims. This situation also applies to Muslims in Malaysia, specifically Malays. The influences range from political and administrative to cultural and artistic, and even the way of thinking. Research and analysis conducted towards the writings and historical texts proved that Turkish influence exists in the Malay world. For example, there is a Malay state administration modelled from the Ottoman Caliphate to advance it to synchronise with modern changes in the West. During the 1930s, Turkey’s modernisation drew Malay intellectuals’ attention, spreading the ideas through writing in newspapers and magazines. Developments in Turkey exposed the Malays to various polemics resulting from Kemal’s modernisation and secularisation when he led the Turkish government. For Malays, events in Turkey serve as lessons in their effort to develop their community towards progress in all aspects. Development in Turkey has also attracted various newspapers and magazines like ‘Pengasoh’, ‘Al-Ikhwan’, ‘Malaya’, ‘Majalah Guru’, ‘Al-Hedayah’, ‘Bahtra’ and ‘Saudara’. They celebrated Kemal establishing the Turkish republic and its various modernisation plans. Turkish influence was also pervasive in filmmaking, therefore, proving developments in Turkey influence various aspects of the Malay world. Therefore, the main premise of this article is to outline the analysis and impact of the Malay jurisprudence works in the 19th century. This is due to the fact that the writings in the 19th century were very dynamic in terms of development. This fact is supported by several factors which contributed to the growth development of new ideas in the writing of Malay jurisprudence. The early stage of development started with small treatises on the science of beliefs, jurisprudence and sufism. The identification of writing has its artistic values and originality in writing. In the context of modernization, the contribution of Malay jurisprudence works to the formation of competitive intellectual values should not be denied.

Beyond the boundaries of what is typically considered the Indonesian-Malay world, a small community known today as the Sri Lanka Malays continued to employ the Malay language in writing and speech long after its ancestors left the Indonesian archipelago and Malay peninsula for their new home. Although it is reasonable to assume that the ancestors of the Malays spoke a variety of languages, at least initially, no traces of writing in another Indonesian language have ever been found. Below I present the first evidence of such writing, in Javanese, encountered in an early nineteenth century manuscript from Colombo.

Abstract:
According to the WWF, forests cover 30% of the earth’s surface and act as important support systems in balancing the world ecosystem (World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) n.d.). They are home to many plant and animal species and a critical source for sustaining human livelihood. Human dependency on forest products is the backbone of not only the survival of a nuclear family but also contributes to the economy of the local community. As known, Malaysian forests consist of mountainous forests, tropical rainforest, swamps and coastal forests. As for traditional Malay society, they relied heavily on forests for survival. Besides its functioning as a source of food, forests also contribute to the cultural aspects of society in the Malay civilisation. Hence, this study will analyse the image and description of the Malay forests based on the writing of British officers and writers during the colonial era such as Maxwell, Clifford, Swettenham, Fauconnier, Endicott, Winstedt, Skeat, Wilkinson and Annandale. By using a narrative approach and auto-ethnography, views of the Malay forest will be assessed from Western perspectives, which are based predominantly on the observations of British-Malaya colonial officers and Western scholars involved directly in the Malay community and their communal activities at the time. In summary, this writing will depict the worldview of the Malays about their forests, physically and spiritually, through the lens of Westerners.

The Malay work of writings which put Hadith as the Mawdu’ (title) of the writings of Malay Archipelago’s scholars is considered Nadir (small). This view is based on the remnants and the writings of Malay Archipelago’s scholars that are mostly focused on the aspect of tasawuf, fiqh and tauhid. This can be seen from their works or books circulated in the market that are still be read by the Malays. Abstract:
The history dates years ago that emergence of Islam in Malay Peninsular via trading producing the fraction form of these two languages, where the Malay language loaned various word from the Arabic particularly religion words. Besides, the Malays also used the Arabic alphabets in their writing system and add 5 letters due on the language original voice and they named the writing system as Jawi. On the contrary, the existence of Romanized of Malay language today backlash the Jawi morphology order in which it defers with Arabic language morphology system simultaneously. Thus, this could lead the Malay-Arabic Learners to derangement of study. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the differences between loan words writing in Jawi. The researcher used the descriptive study in the interpretation and analysis of differences in the writings. The researcher also used the comparative study in these two language writings. The study concludes that the loaned words changes in the phonetic and the writing system could lead to the commotion of the Malay learners. It is expected that this study will benefit to the writers of teaching Arabic for the Malay speakers and set up a full reference for the Arabic loan words and clarify the changes phonetically or writing or semantically. ملخص البحث يذكر التاريخ أنّ الإسلام دخل إلى الجزر الملايوية عن طريق التجارة وبطريقة سلمية، وحدث بين اللغة العربية واللغة الملايوية احتكاك لغوي؛ حيث اقترضت اللغة الملايوية الكثير من الألفاظ العربية ومعظمها تتعلق بالدين، كما استخدم الشعب الملايوي الحروف العربية في كتابة لغتهم وزادوا عليها خمسة أحرف بسبب عدم وجود أصوات تلك الحروف في لغتهم وأطلقوا عليها بالكتابة الجاوية، ومن ناحية أخرى نلاحظ في ظل وجود الكتابة الرومية أو اللاتينية أنّ الكثير من الكلمات العربية المقترضة للملايوية أصبحت كتابتها في قواعد الكتابة الجاوية تختلف عن قواعد كتابة اللغة العربية الفصحى، الأمر الذي أدّى إلى تشويش لدى طلبة اللغة العربية الملايويين. وتحاول هذه الدراسة إبراز الأسباب التي أدّت إلى اختلاف كتابة الكلمات المقترضة في الكتابة الجاوية حيث يستعين الباحث بالمنهج الوصفي في تفسير وتحليل الاختلاف في الكتابتين والمنهج المقارن في المقارنة بين النظامين. وقد توصلت الدراسة إلى أنّ الألفاظ المقترضة اعترتها تغييرات صوتية وكتابية الأمر الذي يسبب تشويش لدى متعلمي اللغة العربية الملايويين؛ حيث ينبغي لمؤلفي المناهج التعليمية الاستفادة من هذه الدراسة عند تأليفهم لكتب تعليمية عربية للملايويين كما تقترح الدراسة إيجاد مرجع كامل عن الألفاظ المقترضة من العربية للملايوية توضح جميع التغيرات التي اعترتها سواء الصوتية أو الكتابية أو الدلالية.

Abstract:
The writing of classical Malay fiqh is a manifestation of the ability and intellectual ability of Malay scholars to write and produce high-quality science. Undoubtedly, it contributes to intellectual value creation among Malay scholars who seek to make the best contribution to society. The premise of this article discusses the categorization of writing items resulting from the writing and creation of classical Malay fiqh. It covers subject-writing items and chronological discussions, physical work, author status as an initial discussion on the category of items of Malay fiqh works. The categorization of these writing items is thought to have had an impact on the development of Malay fiqh works in the Malay Nature region as it came from high impact writing and beneficial to the Muslim Malay community. The intellectual and intellectual writing elements of the past were used as guides and references to our lives today. In addition, the development of Malay fiqh works is dynamic, non-static. It flourishes by the flow of times and there is a growing fiqh knowledge in the writing of Malay fiqh by centuries and times.

Abstract:
In essence, this article will focus on the subject classical Malay fiqh works 1600-1800. Classical Malay fiqh works are Malay intellectual works produced by Malay Muslim scholars in various topics of Islamic law including worship (ibadah), commercial transaction law (muamalah), family law (munakahat) and others. This fiqh Malay work played an important role in Malay society at the beginning of Islamic development in the Malay world. It is a means of communication, scientific knowledge or developmental science. The premise of this article analyzes the writing of fiqh works that developed in the early days of the great intellectual nature of the Malay world. There are features of fiqh writing in the year 1600 and it is different from the features of fiqh writing in 1700 and 1800. The discussion of this writing includes the difference between the writing text and the style of writing fiqh and being reviewed from various scopes, items and writing features. The method of analysis used is the method of historiography or historicalism which examines the development of an idea. Facts obtained will be thoroughly screened using the Malay induction history approach. Research shows that the earliest classic Malay fiqh writing has its own identity and superiority and is a Malay intellectual work.

Abstract:
One of the skills that requires understanding is writing. Social life is never separated from activities that require writing. Writing even becomes a culture in a region such as the Malay land, one of which is Riau which has Arabic Malay writing. Malay Arabic which is a cultural treasure is preserved by the implementation of local content of Malay Arabic lessons from elementary school level. This study aims to determine the understanding of Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program Batch 2021 A Riau University Students towards Malay Arabic Writing. This research uses descriptive method with quantitative approach. Quantitative descriptive research method is a method that aims to create a picture or descriptive of a situation objectively using numbers, starting from data collection, interpretation of the data and the appearance and result. The results of the research showed that the understanding of Arabic Malay writing was good with a percentage of 90%, the ability to understand Arabic Malay writing was adequate with a percentage of 60%, and the ability to understand Arabic Malay writing was poor with a percentage of 50%. Overall, Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program students' understanding of Malay Arabic Writing is in the poor category with an average percentage of 67%.

Malay Arabic writing is writing that uses Arabic script or letters (hijaiyah) in the Malay language. Malay Arabic script is often developed as a series of reading texts. Reading Malay Arabic texts is a means of learning Malay culture, but incorrect spelling can cause misunderstandings for readers. This research will examine Malay Arabic writing errors found in the fruitful banana advice text. The type of research used in this study is qualitative. The results of this study were that spelling errors were found, letters were missing when writing words, and discrepancies in meaning when written in Arabic-Malay letters.

When researching the catalogues about Malay manuscripts at the library of Leiden University, Netherlands, there was a list of records about Turkey and Malaya’s relations in various manuscript collections in the library. This is important to be highlight to see how far the two empires’ relationship are in Malay manuscripts. Thus, this writing will analyze the Turkish Empire’s influence towards the Malay government in various aspects. The analyze will using the selected Malay manuscripts through the Leiden University Library collection. Qualitative content analysis methods will use to examine the topics. The expectation of writing shows that there are significant influences towards the Malay government, especially about lineage and politics. This writing will directly contribute to the studies on international relations between the Turkish Empire and Malay government and highlight the way the government practiced by the Islamic government in maintaining the relationship as stated in the Malay manuscript.

Abstract:
This study was aimed at identifying the author’s perspective of the colonialists, and to analyse her relationship with one of them in her poem. The British colonisation of the Malay world in the nineteenth century gave rise to various reactions and attitudes among the indigenous communities, the majority of whom were opposed to colonisation, as recorded in traditional Malay literary works. Most of these works expressed the anxiety and hardships they encountered in life under the colonial government. Therefore, it would have been disturbing if any Malay writer were to heap praises on the British colonialists, more so if the writer happened to be a female, as according to the patriarchal system that dominated the conventional Malay literary world, women should be ‘silent’. Nevertheless, this tradition was broken by Hajah Wok Aisyah Nik Idris from Terengganu with her writing of Syair Tuan Hampris, in the early twentieth century. Ironically, in her poem, the author appears to have forgotten the miserable state of the Malays in the other states under the British administration. As such, did Hajah Wok Aisyah have her own reasons for writing the way she did? Was the author of Syair Tuan Hampris captivated by the British administrator? Did the British administrator, J. L. Humphreys, succeed in winning the hearts of the Malays in Terengganu? The method of text analysis was employed in this study, guided by the eight ways proposed by the first British Resident-General of the Federation of Malaya, Sir Frank Swettenham, to Syair Tuan Hampris. This study found that Syair Tuan Hampris invites its readers to savour the unique spectrum of relationships that existed between the colonised people, and the colonialists. The colonialists are no longer regarded as individuals who brought ruin and destruction to the local community, but instead, all their actions are held as being honourable. Thus, the author, being a woman, was able to perfectly explain her closeness to one such colonialist in the verses of her poem. In conclusion, Syair Tuan Hampris is strong and direct proof that women had a voice in the community at that time, even though they had to go against the conventions of Malay literature.

This article discusses the influence of foreign cultures on the existence of Malay music in Medan City in the period 1970-2000. The arrival of various foreign communities in Medan City also brings their original culture. The acculturation of foreign communities with ethnic Malays produces a beautiful blend of cultures. This study uses the historical method in four writing steps, namely; heuristics, verification or criticism, interpretation, and historiography, with a cultural approach. Ethnic Malay as an egalitarian society can accept foreign culture with open arms. The interaction of the Malay people for hundreds with foreign cultures has brought significant changes to their culture. This can be seen from the various musical genres that influence Malay music. In addition, the use of musical instruments from various foreign cultures also enriches the treasures of Malay music. Even though it was influenced a lot from foreign cultures, Malay music still survives and exists today.

This study is about the effectiveness of using cartoon materials in Malay language writing at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kampung Jambu. The first objective of this study was to identify the effectiveness of the use of cartoon materials in writing Malay language. The second objective is to analyze the effectiveness of the use of cartoon materials in the writing of the Malay language. In this study, a total of 20 form four students were selected as respondents for questionnaires, pre and post test. This study uses quantitative methods involving questionnaire, pre test and post test. Data analysis of pre-test, pre test and post test using Statistical Packages For Social Science (SPSS) version 23.0. This study focuses on the effectiveness of the use of cartoon materials in the writing of Malay language based on the theory of Gagne Learning (1972) and the theory of Constructivism (1993). Through the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the effectiveness of Malay language writing increased after using cartoon materials. Post-test shows students' achievement in essay writing increased by 65% which achieved excellent results. The use of this cartoon can also help students in developing essay writing ideas of 65%. The next proposed study is to study the use of cartoon materials in Malay language writing using larger scale and diversifying research instruments. In conclusion, the use of cartoon material is able to enhance the teaching and learning process especially in writing.

Research in Malay Arabic writing for non-Muslim students is a study to test the ability of non-Muslim students in Indonesian language and literature education and aims to examine in detail the ability to write Malay Arabic words and apply the rules for writing correct words in Malay Arabic writing. The method in this research is descriptive quantitative, which is a method of describing using numbers and diagrams by explaining the percentage of numbers and diagrams with data that has been obtained from research samples taken in a recorded manner and using samples. Examining and analyzing the data that has been obtained using qualitative descriptive techniques concludes that the ability to write Malay Arabic writing for non-Muslim students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program. This research is also useful for finding writing errors for non-Muslim students and evaluating our mistakes as teachers. The results of the study concluded that the writing ability of non-Muslim students was 20.

Studies have revealed that first language has significant impacts on learners’ second language development. Utilizing L1 in the writing processes such as translation method and direct writing is a conventional strategy used by low proficiency level L2 learners. However, there is a lack of studies that determine the quality of writing influenced by L1 transfer. This study aims to provide a comparative analysis on the use of cohesive markers as a result of the use of Malay in English written text via translation and direct composition. The writing quality in terms of content, organisation and writing style of a group of students with low, intermediate and advanced proficiency levels from a secondary school in the district of Tangkak, Johor was scrutinised. Data were collected via two different topics of writing tasks using direct composition and translation writing process. The first topic involved English direct composition while the second topic employed direct Malay composition which was then translated into English. The results of the study indicated that English essays of direct writing showed less variety of cohesive markers as compared to Malay essays due to the lack of L2 writing skills. The learners apparently generated more ideas in their native language as well as utilized their L1 cohesive markers into L2 composition via the translation writing process. Nevertheless, the similarities and differences of cohesive markers in Malay and English help teachers to understand learners' organisation of Malay and English essays.

Jawi writing is the main form of writing in various manuscripts recovered around the Archipelago, especially during the early arrival of Islam. The usage of Jawi writings had covered a number of calligraphy which are high in value with deep philosophical meaning, are full with creative notion as well as countless of patterns that went along with the call to Islam around the Archipelago in a relatively short period of time. The development of Jawi writing had been immortalized in various genres such as books, manuscripts and letters written by individual writers and in groups as a local way of living. This writing was also introduced through a long process using certain methods of writing and reading, and kept as individual as well as institutional collections all around the Archipelago. This article is focused in various manuscripts that not only were exclusively used as learning and teaching aids, but were also garnished as beautiful symbols and philosophical Islamic art that deserves a high degree of honour. This article’s objective is to deeply analyze the usage of this writing from manuscripts found around the Archipelago as a proof on the importance of this form of writing. The methodology of this article is library study, through a number of theories and methods. The Jawi script is a Malay traditional writing system adapted from the Arabic alphabet which was once used widely during the reign of the British Empire before Romanisation of the Malay writing system took place. It is regarded as a national heritage of Malaysia due to the fact that Bahasa Melayu is the national language of the country. There have been many initiatives taken by the government in preserving the Jawi script including the insertion of Jawi lessons in the Bahasa Melayu subject at the primary school level. However, the new education policy has roused an argument among Malaysians, particularly non-Malays who have been in disagreement towards the new syllabus implemented. The study examined the perceptions and attitudes of non-Malays in Malaysia towards the Jawi script. This descriptive study involved 30 respondents who were approached and invited to participate in the survey. The result portrayed that the participants showed neutral perceptions towards the Jawi script on the basis that it has its own artistic values that should be preserved.

Writing can be said as an activity that forms symbols. But writing is more than producing graphic symbols, just as speaking is defined not only as the production of sound. These symbols must be arranged, according to certain conventions, to form words and words arranged to form sentences. The ability to write is not an ability that can be obtained automatically. The aim of teaching Arabic-Malay writing is to recognize, train, and develop the ability to understand and carry out how to read and write properly and correctly according to Arabic-Malay regulations, as well as express simple ideas or impressions orally and in writing. In conducting this research the authors used a type of quantitative research. In this study the data collection method was carried out by testing the ability to write Malay Arabic words in the questionnaire given. After conducting research on the ability to write Malay Arabic words for students in grade 4a at SD Negeri 148 Pekanbaru, it was found that the students in grade 4a at SD Negeri 148 Pekanbaru as a whole had the ability to write Malay Arabic words in the low category with a percentage of 18.62%. In two-syllable Malay Arabic words, students in grade 4a SD Negeri 148 have a low ability category with a percentage of 7.93% and for Malay Arabic words with more than two syllables are also in the low category with a percentage of 19.31%. This proves that students do not understand how to write Arabic Malay words in two or more syllables.

Father of Modern Malay Literature is an epithet often ascribed to Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munsyi, a Malay author who lived in Melaka and Singapore during the first half of the nineteenth century. Two of his works, Hikayat Abdullah (Tale of Abdullah) and Kisah pelayaran Abdullah ke Kelantan (Account of Abdullah’s voyage to Kelantan) are the stories most often ingled out as those that form the bridge between traditional and modern Malay writing. Characteristics of these writings viewed by critics as modern elements are the foregrounding of the authorial self through the use of the first-person pronoun, realistic descriptions of historical events and persons, and harsh criticism of the culture, socio-political structure, and practices of the Malay community (Milner 1995).

This century, as stated by some local historians, is the beginning of the development of classical Malay books in various fields including religion. The discussion in this article is focused on two things namely the development of writing religious books, focused on fiqh books in the 17th century, while the second case reviews two sample books that have been written in the 17th century namely (1) the Sirat al-Mustaqim and (2) the Mir'ah al-Tullab fi Tashil Ma'rifah Ahkam al-Shari'ah li Mulk al-Wahhab. From the discussion of the above, it can be concluded that the activity of writing classical Malay religious works developed along with the activity of writing in other fields including the fields of Malay literature, Sufism, Malay and Islamic history, Quran and Islamic medicine.

The purpose of this study was to determine the learning motivation of students in the online Malay Arabic Writing course. This research uses a descriptive quantitative method with a large sample of forty students. From the results of the study, it can be seen that the device that is widely used for online learning is android, the experience of learning Malay Arabic writing is generally at the elementary school level, the device used with the motivation to learn Malay Arabic writing online has no significant relationship, and the learning experience with the motivation to learn writing in Arabic Arab Malay online does not have a significant relationship.Kondisi global akibat akibat COVID 19 mengubah hal kehidupan termasuk dalam cara belajar yang pada awalnya dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan tatap muka berubah menggunakan cara online atau daring. The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah in his speech at “Majlis Anugerah Kecemerlangan Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Sam Tet 2017” mentioned that it is indeed awkward and ironic, if a person who is a citizen of Malaysia, with all the interests and privileges of a citizen, cannot understand, cannot speak, cannot write and cannot read in the national language of his country (Amarudin, 2017). Nevertheless, in 2006, there was 29.8% of the students of SJKCs and 47.7% of the students of SJKTs who failed to achieve the minimum level of mastery of Bahasa Malaysia (Penulisan) or Malay Language (Writing) paper in “Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah” (UPSR) (Tan, 2010). Obviously, it is vital to collect some insights from non-Malays in Malaysia particularly the youth regarding their perceptions towards Malay language and English as the second widely used language in this country. Therefore, the present study was conducted with two objectives namely: 1) To investigate the attitude of non-Malay UNITEN students towards Malay and English language, and 2) To examine the perception of non-Malay UNITEN students towards using Malay and English language with Malay people. The findings showed that most of the respondents, 55 (M= 2.37, SD= 1.079) surprisingly assigned “agreed” to item 2 (“I like using Malay language as a second language”) despite admitting they did not possess good Malay language skills for their responses to item 1. This shows that the respondents seem to have mixed feelings regarding the issues of using Malay language in relation to certain aspects and this is also true for English.

The Perang Riau is one of the events that is narrated completely in Tuhfat al-Nafis. This book was originally written by Raja Ahmad Engku Haji Tua and then perfected by Raja Ali Haji in the mid-19th century. Tuhfat al-Nafis discusses various events in the Malay region in full, including the maritime culture of the Malay people and naval warfare. As a historical work written by a Malay, Tuhfat al-Nafis offers an Indonesian-centric historiographic perspective regarding the Perang Riau. There are two problem formulations in this research, first, what are the aspects of Malay maritime culture in Tuhfat al-Nafis? And secondly, what is the narrative of maritime history in the events of the Perang Riau contained in Tuhfat al-Nafis. This research was carried out using historical research methods which consist of four stages, namely heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historical writing. The results of the research show that Tuhfat al-Nafis explains well the maritime culture of the Malay community, especially with regard to shipping technology. Apart from that, control of geography, resources and maritime communities became the main capital for the Malays to survive and fight against the Dutch.

The data of this research is the result of word writing skill test and applying correct wording principle in Malay Arabic script obtained from randomly taken sample of research. Analyzing data is done with the mean technique. The result of this research concludes that the ability of writing Arabic Malay words of students of Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Islamic University of Riau is categorized with percentage of 71.72%. Furthermore, the ability to write Malay Arabic words of the students of Indonesian Language and Literature Education Studies Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Islamic University of Riau based on two syllables categorized with a percentage of 72.09% and based on the word syuku words more than two words low category ie 64.36% .

Abstract:
There are two major religions professed by the Malay community before the advent of Islam, namely Buddhism and Hinduism. However, after the advent of Islam, most of the Malay community had converted to Islam and left behind their original religion professed. Thus, Islam has had a high position among the Malay community. In fact, Islamic environments also already occupying the Malay region. This study seeks to identify factors that led to the spread of Islam within the Malay Peninsular and the extent of its impacts on Malay. The methodology employed is through the analysis of documents or secondary data in order to achieve the intended objectives. The results showed that the Arabs, especially Yemenis have played a major role in spreading Islam in all corners of Malaya through trade, migration and marriage, although there were missionaries coming from Persia and India, who contributed greatly in spreading Islam in the Malay world. Arabic is an official language of Islam and considered to have a significant impact on the construction of letters and words that match the Jawi script with Arabic writing. Malay Jawi script writing has evolved and later known as one of the languages of the civilized world. This continued until the occurrence of colonization of Malaya by the British who have successfully changed the Malay literature into Latin. However, there are Arabic terms, particularly with regard to religion, which is still used in the Malay language until today. Therefore, Islam should again be given appropriate attention in efforts to stabilize and generating the nation's identity and language. The ability to write Arabic-Malay writing is important to learn at the elementary school level as an effort to recognize and preserve the existence of Arabic-Malay writing as a cultural heritage of the Riau Malay natural community. This research was conducted at SDN 021 Pekanbaru in grade 3 with a total of 28 students. The research was carried out on November 22, 2022. The data collection technique in this study used a test technique. Data analysis was performed using scoring techniques, percentages, and categorizing research data (low, medium, and high). The results showed that the ability to write open monosyllabic words into Arabic-Malay script was in the high category with a percentage of 50.00%.

Parallel texts corpora are essential resources especially in translation and multilingual information retrieval. However, the publicly available parallel text corpora are limited to certain types and domains. Besides, Malay dialects are not standardized in term of writing. The existing alignment algorithms that is used to analayze the writing will require a large training data to obtain a good result. The paper describes our methodology in acquiring a parallel text corpus of Standard Malay and Malay dialects, particularly Kelantan Malay and Sarawak Malay. Second, we propose a hybrid of distance-based and statistical-based alignment algorithm to align words and phrases of the parallel text. The proposed approach has a better precision and recall than the state-of-the-art GIZA++. In the paper, the alignment obtained were also compared to find out the lexical similarities and differences between SM and the two dialects.

In reference to the works of two leading ‘ulama of 19th century Southeast Asia, Da’ud al-Fatani and Nawawi al-Bantani, this article discusses the establishment of two Islamic writing traditions, the Malay kitab Jawi and the Arabic kitab which turned to be called more recently as kitab kuning. In spite of the same experiences learning in Mecca, Da’ud al-Fatani wrote his works in Malay, while Nawawi al-Bantani’s kitab were in Arabic. These two writing traditions contributed to the formation of Islamic knowledge among the Muslims of the period, leading the two ‘ulama emerged as the intellectual fathers of Islamic dynamics in respectively Patani-Malaya and Java in Indonesia. In addition to the reason and the ways the two ‘ulama wrote their works in in two different writing styles, other point to highlight is that these kitab Jawi and kitab kuning grew alongside the rise of different Islamic leadership in two major Muslim areas in the region.Artikel ini membahas dua kitab kuning berbahasa Melayu Jawa dan Arab di Asia Tenggara yang merupakan karya Da’ud al-Fatani dan Nawawi al-Bantani. Da’ud al-Fatani menulis dalam bahasa Melayu, sedangkan Nawawi menulis kitab dalam bahasa Arab meskipun keduanya sama-sama belajar agama di Mekkah. Dua kitab ini berkontribusi dalam formasi pembentukan pengetahuan keislaman muslim di Asia Tenggara dan kedua orang tersebut menjadi pembimbing kemunculan dinamika intelektual di Patani dan Jawa abad 19. The focus of the discussion in this paper is about the use of the Malay language among plural societies in Malaysia. This writing attempts to cover the empowerment of the Malay language that is being worked on by the Ministry of Higher Education, which includes (i) the mastery of the Malay language regardless of race or ethnicity, (ii) the ability and authority of the Malay language, (iii) the organization and strengthening of programs to dignify the Malay language, and (iv) the use of the Malay language as the medium of communication. The use of a qualitative approach in this writing utilizes secondary sources such as research results in journals, scholarly writing, online news sources and public forums. The results of the study found that (a) the use of English today as the first medium in speech is a contributing factor to the lack of use of the mother tongue among the multi-ethnic community in Malaysia and instils an individualistic attitude., (b) the use of the Malay language in the private sector has not been prominent because there are a few parties who think that the Malay language has a low commercial value in the business sector, (c) Malay language empowerment programs play a vital role in catalysing the fluency of students as well as the administrative parties at the school and university level so that, issues such as lack of fluency and the dignity of the use of the Malay language as an official language that should be mastered by every Malaysian citizen can be improved and streamlined and (d) If Malay is not used as a medium of instruction, it is unlikely that it will be able to stand majestically on the world stage. As a result, drastic measures must be taken to ensure that the empowerment of the Malay language is in line with the country's development and does not fall solely on the shoulders of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The study's direction looks at the continuation of the impact of the Malay language's empowerment as a language of unity and one of the mediums that play a role in realising our country's aspirations, which is to create racial harmony.

This article elaborates on the socio-cultural method of interpretation of Muhammad Basiuni Imran in his Tafsir of Surah Tujuh which contains only seven selected suras, namely Al-Faatihah, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Naas, Al-Kaafirun, Al-Kautsar, and Al- 'Asr. This research contributes to the study of interpretation and its relationship with local culture. A socio-historical approach with the concept of cultural enculturation is used to analyze data about the Malay Sambas Culture by contact with a culture to be studied and accepted, as well as the process of assimilation of Islamic teachings conveyed in the book of interpretation. This research is qualitative literature research with a descriptive-analytic technique. This study found that the purpose of Muhammad Basiuni Imran in writing the book of Tafsir Surah Tujuh was to guard the understanding of the Sambas Malay community in studying Islam, especially in prayer. The values of the Sambas Malay culture that influence the interpretation of Surah Tujuh are in terms of language, various terms and Arabic-Pegon Malay scripts used in its interpretation, and also the mystical culture of Sambas Malays.

The term of jihad has a significant role in the formation of Islamic identity, politics, and nations. For example, the Malay World during the colonial or pre-independence, has created the momentum among community to break free from the colonial at the time. This spirit was injected with elements of jihad through the advice of scholars, graduates returning from the middle east who brought the spirit of independence and through writing. Among the writings that may have a role in explaining jihad among the Malay community is Baḥr al-Mādhī [1924-1960]. This article will analyse on the representation of jihad and warfare term in the Baḥr al-Mādhī, a book written by Muḥammad Idrīs al-Marbawī [1896-1989]. It can be considered as one of the greatest masterpieces of Malay Muslim scholar in the twentieth century. It was composed as a commentary to the hadith in Jāmi‘ al-Tirmidhī and have been written in Malay language. This article also analyses al-Marbawi’s contribution to Malay community understanding jihad in pre independence period of Malaysia through his commentary and translation of the hadith of jihad in Baḥr al-Mādhī. This study applied qualitative study, data collected by library research and analysed by document analysis methodology. Study found that, the Baḥr al-Mādhī by Muḥammad Idrīs al-Marbawī has played a major role in the understanding of jihad among Malays in pre-independence period. This book symbolizes the local wisdom of the Malay community at the earliest time. This contribution can be understood through the background of the writing of this book, its wide pertinence into society and the content of jihad in it.[Konsep jihad mempunyai peran signifikan dalam pembentukan identitas keislaman, politik dan kebangsaan. Abstract:
This paper was aimed at identifying the captive attitude of Abdullah Munshi in his writings and to analyse its relationship to his conferment of the title ‘The Father of Modern Malay Literature’ by the West. It was Abdullah Munshi’s courage in challenging the existing literary conventions and in introducing a Western style of writing to Malay audiences that earned him this title. This recognition made him the most credible Malay literary figure from the perspective of the Western colonialists, especially with the writing of his first travelogue, Kisah Pelayaran Abdullah. His reputation continued to rise until several scholars began to dispute his credibility by arguing that he did not deserve to be recognised as such. He was labelled as an individual who was captivated by everything concerning his Western benefactors, as mirrored in his magnum opus. With this phenomenon in mind, the text analysis method was applied, based on Syed Hussein Alatas’ concept of a captive character, to the first Malay travelogue, Kisah Pelayaran Abdullah. The findings of this study revealed that Abdullah Munshi was a person whose character conformed to five basic criteria underlining this concept namely, a person who copies the activities of Westerners and regards them as beneficial; a person who is unable to raise new questions in life; a person who regards Western knowledge to be the best; a person who accepts the suggestions of Westerners without objection; and a person who thinks so highly of the West that he fails to realize that he himself has become a captive. This means that Abdullah Munshi was a person who was a captive of the West, as he himself revealed in his travelogue. To summarize, it can be proven that the recognition accorded to Abdullah Munshi as ‘The Father of Modern Malay Literature’, which led to the separation of Malay literature into two periods, was the best agenda by the West to ensure the relevance of their presence in the colonies, particularly in the Malay World.

This paper examines two texts by Malay(si)an women: Aishah Ghani’s Ibu Melayu Mengelilingi Dunia (1956) and P.G. Lim’s memoirs, Kaleidoscope (2012). It focusses on the narratives of their journeys to and in England between 1934 and 1958. P.G. Lim (1915-2013) and Aishah Ghani (1923-2013) were contemporaries who lived in Malaya under British colonial rule, participated in nationalist movements for Malaya’s independence, and served in the post-colonial government of Malaya and Malaysia in pioneering roles. Their journeys to England took place before the Second World War and after. Their travel narratives provide readers with valuable insight into the rapidly changing roles of Malay(si)an women within a span of twenty-five years. Lim’s and Aishah’s travels to England in the waning days of the British Empire reveal their experiences and observations of the imperial centre, and the significance of these to their notions of women’s freedom of movement and independence from colonial rule. Informed by the work of Inderpal Grewal on Indian female travellers to the West, this paper aims to address the limited research on the history of female mobility, travel, and travel writing in Malay(si)a.

This research was conducted to identify the understanding of Form Four students and analyze the differences in mean achievement between the control and experimental groups on the mind map of Malay essays. This selection map was tested on 30 Form Four students at Vocational High (VHS) Malay language, Saratok. Statistics were collected through the survey and quasi-experimental methods, and the peeled data was done quantitatively. The findings of this study show that the level of understanding of Form Four students is at a moderately high level because most students know the names and functions of each mind map introduced. Furthermore, the mean of post-test students taught using mind maps was higher than that taught using cooperative learning, which was a 1.8 difference. The increase in the experimental group's mean in this post-test showed that teaching Malay essays using mind maps improved student achievement in writing essays. This research can help Malay language teachers diversify their teaching techniques and help students master the writing of Malay language essays.

In this study, the researchers reviewed the current literature of Malay essay writing that highlighted most students were lacking the essential skills to write good narrative essays, with most of their works lacking depth, elaborations, strong contents, coherence, and grammatical integrity. Against this backdrop, the researchers proposed a teaching and learning intervention with the use of thinking maps as a learning tool for the teaching and learning process of Malay narrative essay writing based on the year-five Malay Language curriculum by focusing on three principles of the writing of children’s stories, namely curiosity, challenge, and suspense. With such a thinking tool, teachers can help their students to search for and organize ideas for their essays in a structured, systematic fashion, the infusion of which can help them create interesting, moving stories. From a grammatical standpoint, students’ essays will consist of cohesive sentences and coherent paragraphs, which makes reading a smooth, enjoyable experience to the reader.

Abstract:
Learning a logograph writing system like Mandarin requires a completely different set of metalinguistic knowledge than learning English and Malay languages which share the same writing system, alphabetical writing system. Mandarin writing system does not allow deconstruction of letters to form different syllabus or phonemes like in English and Malay. In Mandarin, a simple change of a stroke in a word might change the word and its meaning entirely. Thus, learning to write Mandarin correctly could be the toughest task in Mandarin learning especially non-native learners. To ease this problem, Hanzi Write It Right provides a simple and fun self-directed learning digital platform to allow learners to practice Mandarin stroke writing. Feedback given in the app enables learners to make complicated strokes writing learning to become an easy and more comprehensive experience. Apart from enhancing their accuracy in stroke writing, it also increases their vocabulary knowledge which is crucial in Mandarin learning.

Abstract:
Riau is one of the provinces in the middle of the island of Sumatra. Geographically, Riau's land stretches from the slopes of Bukit Barisan to the coast of the Strait of Malacca. Many traditional Malay settlements are found along the Kampar River, Rokan River, Kampar River, and Indragiri River. Malays are very dominant in Riau Province, but there are also various other ethnic tribes such as Chinese, Banjar, and others. This study will examine the typology of Malay settlements in Riau Province. Typology is the study of types, that is, the attempt to conduct a review of types based on certain criteria. In this case, the framework of Levi-Strauss structuralism is the basis for a review of typology. Levi-Strauss believes that structuralism based on structural studies developed in culture, such as myths, beliefs, language, and symbols can be used as a reference for understanding a society including in the study of traditional settlements. This study uses literature research methods. The stages of the literature review are determining research topics, collecting information and data through various materials and scientific papers, discussion, and writing. Learn from various information about Malay settlements in Riau Province such as the Koto Sentajo settlement, Akit Tribe settlement, Kampung Dalam settlement, Siak Hulu settlement, and Rokan Hulu Defense Village settlement. Culture played an important role in the formation of these traditional Malay settlements. Each Malay settlement formed its distinctive features based on the cultural structure that was developed and adopted. Different cultural elements such as Malay dialects, social strata structures, customary institutions, rituals, inheritance, and kinship systems affect different typologies of traditional Malay settlements.

Abstract:
The study aims to identify the problems faced by among B40 students in reading and writing skills. This case study is conducted on 16 students from families that do not know B40 and substandard reading and writing in Malay Language. A total of 5 B40 Malay students, 7 B40 Chinese students and 4 B40 Indian students selected as study participants. All these students study in form 1 in two national secondary schools namely as SMKA and SMKB in Hulu Langat district, Kajang, Selangor. 8 B40 students from SMKA and 8 B40 students from SMKB. Structured interviews are used as a data collection tool. Interview data were analyzed narratively where the themes found were based on the analyzed transcripts. The findings of the study show that the main reading problem of B40 students is that they do not know how to read and do not understand what is being read. As for writing problems, B40 students do not know what is written. B40 Chinese students is the weakest students in reading and writing, followed by B40 Indian andB40 Malay students. Through the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the problem of reading and writing among B40 students is an issue that needs to be addressed by teachers, MOE and parents.

Abstract:
This research aimed to examine the associations among classroom social environment roles, teachers' attitudes toward Malay writing skills in teaching and learning, and the potential influence of age and teaching experience. Employing a survey approach, data collection was facilitated through an online questionnaire via Google Forms. The study encompassed a sample of 140 Malay language teachers from the Bangi Zone National School. Data analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 27.0, encompassing both descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, percentage) and inferential statistics (one-way ANOVA test and Pearson Correlation). The findings of this study indicate a notably high level of classroom social environment roles and teacher attitudes. Significant differences were observed in the classroom social environment concerning age, yet no significant variations emerged in teacher attitudes based on age, classroom social environment roles, or teaching experience. Importantly, a positive and significant relationship was established between classroom social environment roles and teachers' attitudes toward Malay writing skills in teaching and learning. This research carries implications for Malay language teachers, student teachers, the educational community, and the Malaysian Ministry of Education. It highlights the importance of incorporating elements focused on classroom management and the promotion of a positive classroom atmosphere within professional development programs. Teachers and school leaders are encouraged to strategize and actively maintain conducive social environments to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning in Malay writing skills.

Abstract:
The lack of mastery of Malay proficiency at National Type Schools (SJK) has caused deterioration of academic achievement in recent years. This study was conducted to determine the relationship of proficiency in all four skills of Malay language proficiency with students’ academic achievement among non-native speakers at National Type Schools (SJK). A total of 414 samples from 5 SJK schools were selected for study. The two instruments used to obtain data are the UPBM_SR Proficiency Test and UPBM_SR Score Level. Data were processed using IBMSPSS Version 23 with a cross-sectional survey design. The results show that the scores for the four Proficiency Tests conducted are moderate, and writing skills are at a low level. Results for the overall level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills showed that the majority of students obtained Level 5 (almost proficient), which is 29% (120 students). No students received Level 1 or Level 8. This clearly shows that there is a great relationship between Malay language proficiency and academic achievement. Only students who are possess good listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in a second language are able to improve their academic performance. The diligent efforts of all parties are needed to create a generation competent in the Malay language.
