Abstract:
Jawi writings began to show their role in the Malay Land since the entry of Islam into the archipelago. However, at this time Jawi writings seem to have been marginalized by Rumi or Latin writings. This condition is inversely proportional to what happens when Malay (Jawi writing) reaches a high level in its time. At that time Christian priests had to translate the Bible into Malay so they could spread their religion in Malay lands. Whereas at present, Muslims must transliterate the Qur'an into Latin letters so that Muslims can read it in Malay lands. This fact shows that the Malays have experienced a setback in the intellectual tradition that was once possessed in the form of Jawi writing. This research aims to find out the role of Jawi writings in the past and what must be done to safeguard one of the valuable intellectual traditions of Malay Islam. The results show that currently Jawi writing has become a rare commodity in the Indonesian Malay world. While neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Brunei still retain Jawi writing through their use on street names, buildings and other public facilities. The Indonesian Malay world community is more familiar with Latin writing than Jawi writing. Therefore, systematic efforts are needed to reintroduce and maintain the treasury of Jawi writing to the younger generation in the Indonesian Malay world.

Abstract:
This article discusses the policies of British administrators towards the Malays’ coconut cultivation as a commercial crop for export purposes. In commercial coconut cultivation for export purposes, the British administrators not only refrained from hindering but also encouraged the Malays to continuously plant coconuts. However, the British administration’s policies towards Malays on coconut cultivation is not detailed in past writings. On the contrary, previous writings only focused on British effort in commercialising coconut products and the socio-economic effects resulting from the development of coconut cultivation. Therefore, this study will concentrate on the British administrators’ policies towards Malays coconut cultivation, why the British administrators adopted such a policies and the efforts made to ensure that Malays continue to cultivate coconuts. This writing argues that the British administrators endeavored to encourage and influence the Malays to continue planting coconuts in order to diversify agricultural products for export, thus reducing dependence on rubber cultivation and subsequently increasing income through exports. Additionally, this effort aimed to meet the needs of the manufacturing sector within Malaya itself. The British administrators’ efforts to promote coconut cultivation among the Malays were not only through positive encouragement but also implemented through coercion. This writing uses a historical approach, specifically the method of analysing primary sources in the form of official records of the British administrators, such as the Year Book And Manual of Statistics, Malayan Agricultural Journal, Federated Malay States Gazette Agricultural Bulletin of the Straits and Federated Malay States, and other related records.

Abstract:
Turkey is the heir to the Ottoman Islamic Caliphate, extending significant influence on Muslims worldwide. All aspects of the Turkish socio-culture will, directly and indirectly, influence the socio-culture of Muslims. This situation also applies to Muslims in Malaysia, specifically Malays. The influences range from political and administrative to cultural and artistic, and even the way of thinking. Research and analysis conducted towards the writings and historical texts proved that Turkish influence exists in the Malay world. For example, there is a Malay state administration modelled from the Ottoman Caliphate to advance it to synchronise with modern changes in the West. During the 1930s, Turkey’s modernisation drew Malay intellectuals’ attention, spreading the ideas through writing in newspapers and magazines. Developments in Turkey exposed the Malays to various polemics resulting from Kemal’s modernisation and secularisation when he led the Turkish government. For Malays, events in Turkey serve as lessons in their effort to develop their community towards progress in all aspects. Development in Turkey has also attracted various newspapers and magazines like ‘Pengasoh’, ‘Al-Ikhwan’, ‘Malaya’, ‘Majalah Guru’, ‘Al-Hedayah’, ‘Bahtra’ and ‘Saudara’. They celebrated Kemal establishing the Turkish republic and its various modernisation plans. Turkish influence was also pervasive in filmmaking, therefore, proving developments in Turkey influence various aspects of the Malay world. Beyond the boundaries of what is typically considered the Indonesian-Malay world, a small community known today as the Sri Lanka Malays continued to employ the Malay language in writing and speech long after its ancestors left the Indonesian archipelago and Malay peninsula for their new home. Although it is reasonable to assume that the ancestors of the Malays spoke a variety of languages, at least initially, no traces of writing in another Indonesian language have ever been found. Below I present the first evidence of such writing, in Javanese, encountered in an early nineteenth century manuscript from Colombo.

Abstract:
According to the WWF, forests cover 30% of the earth’s surface and act as important support systems in balancing the world ecosystem (World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) n.d.). They are home to many plant and animal species and a critical source for sustaining human livelihood. Human dependency on forest products is the backbone of not only the survival of a nuclear family but also contributes to the economy of the local community. As known, Malaysian forests consist of mountainous forests, tropical rainforest, swamps and coastal forests. As for traditional Malay society, they relied heavily on forests for survival. Besides its functioning as a source of food, forests also contribute to the cultural aspects of society in the Malay civilisation. Hence, this study will analyse the image and description of the Malay forests based on the writing of British officers and writers during the colonial era such as Maxwell, Clifford, Swettenham, Fauconnier, Endicott, Winstedt, Skeat, Wilkinson and Annandale. By using a narrative approach and auto-ethnography, views of the Malay forest will be assessed from Western perspectives, which are based predominantly on the observations of British-Malaya colonial officers and Western scholars involved directly in the Malay community and their communal activities at the time. In summary, this writing will depict the worldview of the Malays about their forests, physically and spiritually, through the lens of Westerners.

The Malay work of writings which put Hadith as the Mawdu’ (title) of the writings of Malay Archipelago’s scholars is considered Nadir (small). This view is based on the remnants and the writings of Malay Archipelago’s scholars that are mostly focused on the aspect of tasawuf, fiqh and tauhid. This can be seen from their works or books circulated in the market that are still be read by the Malays. The historical development of knowledge in the Malay archipelago stated that the Malay ulamas have been in command of various fields of knowledge and disciplines such as Astronomy, Mathematics, Medicine and etc.This paperwork is an effort to discover the treasure of those Malay ulamas in producing written works on Fiqh Muamalat al-Maliyyahand putting hadith as a source. This writing is also to introduce Syeikh Abdul Qadir Bin Abdur Rahim Al-Fathani Bukit Bayas Terengganu and his book entitled “Risalah fi Bayani Hukmi Bai’i war Riba (papers describing on the matters of purchasing and interests). This book has been classified as a nadir (small) manuscript. This paper will also observe the method used in narrating hadith, total number of hadith and the source of hadith in the book.

Abstract:
The history dates years ago that emergence of Islam in Malay Peninsular via trading producing the fraction form of these two languages, where the Malay language loaned various word from the Arabic particularly religion words. Besides, the Malays also used the Arabic alphabets in their writing system and add 5 letters due on the language original voice and they named the writing system as Jawi. On the contrary, the existence of Romanized of Malay language today backlash the Jawi morphology order in which it defers with Arabic language morphology system simultaneously. Thus, this could lead the Malay-Arabic Learners to derangement of study. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the differences between loan words writing in Jawi. The researcher used the descriptive study in the interpretation and analysis of differences in the writings. The researcher also used the comparative study in these two language writings. The study concludes that the loaned words changes in the phonetic and the writing system could lead to the commotion of the Malay learners. It is expected that this study will benefit to the writers of teaching Arabic for the Malay speakers and set up a full reference for the Arabic loan words and clarify the changes phonetically or writing or semantically. ملخص البحث يذكر التاريخ أنّ الإسلام دخل إلى الجزر الملايوية عن طريق التجارة وبطريقة سلمية، وحدث بين اللغة العربية واللغة الملايوية احتكاك لغوي؛ حيث اقترضت اللغة الملايوية الكثير من الألفاظ العربية ومعظمها تتعلق بالدين، كما استخدم الشعب الملايوي الحروف العربية في كتابة لغتهم وزادوا عليها خمسة أحرف بسبب عدم وجود أصوات تلك الحروف في لغتهم وأطلقوا عليها بالكتابة الجاوية، ومن ناحية أخرى نلاحظ في ظل وجود الكتابة الرومية أو اللاتينية أنّ الكثير من الكلمات العربية المقترضة للملايوية أصبحت كتابتها في قواعد الكتابة الجاوية تختلف عن قواعد كتابة اللغة العربية الفصحى، الأمر الذي أدّى إلى تشويش لدى طلبة اللغة العربية الملايويين. وتحاول هذه الدراسة إبراز الأسباب التي أدّت إلى اختلاف كتابة الكلمات المقترضة في الكتابة الجاوية حيث يستعين الباحث بالمنهج الوصفي في تفسير وتحليل الاختلاف في الكتابتين والمنهج المقارن في المقارنة بين النظامين. وقد توصلت الدراسة إلى أنّ الألفاظ المقترضة اعترتها تغييرات صوتية وكتابية الأمر الذي يسبب تشويش لدى متعلمي اللغة العربية الملايويين؛ حيث ينبغي لمؤلفي المناهج التعليمية الاستفادة من هذه الدراسة عند تأليفهم لكتب تعليمية عربية للملايويين كما تقترح الدراسة إيجاد مرجع كامل عن الألفاظ المقترضة من العربية للملايوية توضح جميع التغيرات التي اعترتها سواء الصوتية أو الكتابية أو الدلالية.

Abstract:
This thesis has three major objectives which are inter-related. Firstly, it investigates some important aspects of the traditional history of the Malay Archipelago, the early development of Islamic thought, culture and the religious traditions which is represented by the Kitab Jawi. The history and development of the Kitab Jawi and its contribution to the traditional Islamic heritage are explored. This development was accompanied by the emergence of traditional scholars ('ulamā') such as Nūr al-Dīn al-Rānīrī (d. 1666, Acheh), Shams al-Dīn al-Sumatrānī (d. 1630, Sumatra), 'Abd al-Ṣamad al-Falembānī (d. 1764, Palembang), Raja 'Alī al-Hājī (d. 1784, Johor-Riau), Muḥammad Arshad al-Banjārī (b. 1812, Banjarmasin), Dā'ūd b. 'Abd Allah b Idrīs al-Faṭānī (d. 1840, Patani), 'Abd al-Ṣamad b Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ (Tuan Tabal) (d. 1840, Kelantan), Sayyid 'Uthmān b Yaḥyā al-Betāwī (d. 1886, Batavia or Jakarta), and their contribution to the Kitab Jawi tradition is examined in detail. Secondly, the theological discussion among the traditional scholars became a dominant factor in intellectual circles as a result of the popularity of and high demand for theological disciplines among the masses, the high position accorded to these scholars and their close relationship with the sultans or rajas. Among the disciplines of theology is the 'ilm al-Tauḥīd (the Unity of Allah) in which Sanūsī's Umm al-Barāhīn played a very vital role. The most notable feature of this creed is the teaching of Sifat Dua Puluh (the Twenty Attributes of Allah) as the result of which this teaching became the basic religious teaching among the people of the Malay Archipelago. The present study attempts to show how strong the effects of this teaching have been and how it has survived through the centuries. Finally, an annotated translation of a Jawi text of Umm al-Barāhīn is followed by a detailed analysis of the text in relation to the Twenty Attributes. A brief conclusion attempts to draw these strands together and to assess their importance for Islam in the Malay Archipelago.

This thesis contains two parts: the first part is a study of traditional Malay houses, the second part is to apply the study results in design and planning. The building language of Malay house is made up by 5 unique “characters” in the structure as reflected in the truss form; and ways of spatial layout as found in house extension and house grouping. The language has been systematically explored as follows: I. Deform exercise: Knowing the building language by doing some deformation, under the rule of proportion and parameters control. II. New type design: Using a new idea as a mutation factor, that is folding the volume of Malay spaces, to create new type. III. Forming house clusters: exploring different combinations to create meaningful spatial experiences as new dwelling opportunity for Malay community. IV. Settlement planning: Using the ‘patch’ idea to make a new settlement. The site is located at countryside of Kulai, Malaysia, between a nature woodland and over-developing area. The ‘patch’ idea is precisely suitable to balance the chosen environment. This design thesis exercises the concept of typological design and patch-making idea, which bring the new eyeshot and attempt to Malay tradition. The inherent of Malay house do not vanish, only the external appearances witness changes. Learning from the tradition, design can achieve innovations.

This thesis expounds the dialectic between self and other in Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin (2000) and Oryx and Crake (2003). Regarding the human body as the locus of social powers, it ventures on an investigation of bodily autonomy and bodily integrity in the age(s) of patriarchy and/or transgenics. By referring to Julia Kristeva's "abjection" theory, Helene Cixous's ecriture feminine, Donna J. Haraway's "Cyborg Manifesto," Chris Hables Gray's cyborg citizenship, Michel Foucault's critique of naturalism, as well as Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's "becoming," this thesis attempts to delve into the complexity of boundary discourses in order to reveal the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of subjectivity from the perspectives of female malady and human monstrosity. As The Blind Assassin brings to the fore the difficulty for women to retain their bodily boundaries against societal/patriarchal cannibalism, Oryx and Crake further questions the filmy boundary between humans and animals/monsters. There are four parts in this thesis. The Introduction briefly touches upon the correlation between body and boundary, tackling issues like body politics, gynecologic pathology, eating disorders and the impacts of bioengineering on human beings. Chapter One explicates women's emergence from the shade of abjection to the stage of subjectivity in The Blind Assassin. Where food-refusing and obsessive showers help women (re)claim their subjectivity by negatively drawing a line between self and other, female writing shapes up subjects that do not simply counter the other but negotiate with it. Chapter Two addresses the mutable construction of monstrosity in Oryx and Crake. While such bioengineered creatures as the pigoons and the Crakers prove that humanity is coupled with dominance whilst monstrosity is bound up with inferiority and marginality, the genographer Crake even attests to a monstrous form of homo faber (man, the maker, the tool user) when science colludes with capitalism. The Conclusion reiterates that subjectivity is not sustained through a detachment or a defense of the self from/against the other; instead, tolerance and respect are what account for the coexistence of humans and other species.

Hierdie studie van Afrikaanse tekste oor die Kongo (DRK) strek vanaf 1912 - toe DF Malan die eerste wit Afrikaner geword het wat ‘n reisbeskrywing oor sy besoek aan die Kongo gepubliseer het (Naar Congoland, 1913) - tot 2012 . Die navorsingsverslag ondersoek beeldvorming rondom die Kongo/(Midde-)Afrika in die korpus tekste wat opgespoor is, binne die breë teoretiese raamwerk van koloniale/postkoloniale studies, met toespitsing op “Africanism” en “Whiteness studies”. Daar is bevind dat beeldvorming in verband met die Kongo rondom twee hooftrope geskied: die Kongo as Conradiaanse “heart of darkness”, waar barbaarsheid in al sy geledinge hoogty vier; en die Kongo as “Eldorado” – die land wat as 15de-eeuse Afrika-koninkryk beskik het oor ‘n ontwikkelde beskawing en ongekende rykdom - lank voordat dit “ontdek” is deur Portugese seevaarders. This study of Afrikaans literary texts on the Congo (DRC) covers 100 years: 1912 – 2012. In 1912 DF Malan became the first white Afrikaner to travel to the Congo and publish a travelogue based on his travels (Naar Congoland, 1913). This thesis investigates the representation of the Congo/Central) Africa in the corpus of texts discovered, within the broad theoretical framework of colonial/postcolonial studies, and the paradigms of “Africanism” and “Whiteness Studies”. The Congo has been represented in terms of two main tropes: the Congo as the Conradian “heart of darkness”, the seat of utter savagery; and the Congo as “Eldorado” – the African kingdom that presided over a well-developed civilisation and untold wealth long before it was “discovered” by Portuguese explorers in the fifteenth century. These main tropes and their sub-tropes function in most Afrikaans texts on the Congo as a continuum and not in absolute contrast. Literary texts of the colonial era (up to the 1960’s) are characterised by Eurocentric discourses in which the imperial/colonial Zeitgeist typically manifests in binary oppositions (primitivism versus civilisation), and tropes like “imperial eyes” (white appropriation of colonial space). Malan’s dream of a Dutch sphere of influence - based on the affinity of Dutch/Flemish in the Congo with Dutch/Afrikaans in South Africa – and extending from Cape Town to the erstwhile Belgian Congo, is reminiscent of the expansionist fervour characterising the imperialist Cape-to-Cairo idea, but is based on the close link between language and nationhood in Afrikaner nationalism. In postcolonial texts the view of the white Afrikaner as ‘n descendant of the idealised Voortrekkers/Angolan trekkers is increasingly deconstructed by re-imagining the Afrikaner as a “white sangoma” or “whiteboy in Africa”, while white fright and guilt are revealed - in a sharply satirical fashion – as the bitter legacy of the white arch-colonialist “Pappa in Afrika”. The colonial project is portrayed as a disaster in Equatoria, while Horrelpoot poses a dystopic vision of the degeneration of Afrikanerdom and Afrikaans in (South) Africa. Whiteness may eventually be erased and replaced by authentic, earthy African colours, or be redefined within a non-hegemonic context (The Poisonwood Bible). Time alone will tell.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter traces the inception and development of Malaysian Literature in English (MLE) by examining the nation’s sociopolitics. This hinges on ethnocentric policies which are divisive for the writer, from both the Malay and non-Malay ethnic backgrounds, who chooses English as a creative medium. From the 1970s to the 1990s the Malay writers appropriated the journalistic form of writing, while the non-Malay writers used the novel to negotiate their sense of belonging to the nation. The present era has been more favourable for MLE, as multi-ethnic writers’ approach towards writing in English has become more inclusive. The diasporic/transnational MLE writers contribute to MLE’s expansion, and follow an inclusive path towards more creativity with their counterparts in Malaysia.

The people (al-ummah) Who were destined to receive the revelation in which the above verses are contained, could not remain unaffected on the human level by either the central significance of the Pen which God takes to witness in the verse cited above, nor by the inexhaustibleness of the treasury of the Words of God. The ummah which created Islamic civilization could not but live by the pen and its fruit in the form of the written word. Nor could it cease to produce a great number of works written primarily in Arabic, secondarily in Persian, and then in nearly all the vernacular languages of the Islamic world ranging from Turkish to Malay and Bengali to Berber. The civilization which received the imprint of the Qurʾānic revelation produced a vast corpus of writings which has probably not been matched in quantity by the literature of any other civilization before the discovery of printing. It also produced a body of writings which contains not only the thought. art, and sentiments of that notable segment of humanity which comprises the Islamic people, but also many of the intellectual and scholarly treasures of The civilizations of antiquity to which Islam became heir and much of whose heritage it preserved in accordance With its function as the last plenar religion of this humanity. Moreover, manuscripts were written by Muslims or minorities living within the Islamic world which contain knowledge of other civilizations and peoples.
