Abstract:
In this interview, artist and scholar Deborah Willis describes the work of excavating and organizing the history of Black photography. Willis’s groundbreaking scholarship helped to formally establish an archive of Black visual practice before libraries and cultural institutions began to purposely catalogue such materials. Across projects, she has engaged questions of beauty, citizenship, Black culture, and family history from the nineteenth century to the present by closely examining the camera practices of legendary photographers and the cultural contexts surrounding iconic images. In this interview, Willis describes her research as a student relying on periodical records as well as on the support of Black artists such as Roy DeCarava, Carrie Mae Weems, Gordon Parks, and James VanDerZee. This conversation with the author intertwines Willis’s personal history and the history of creating a visual archive to offer a look back and a look forward at the practice of Black photography.

Abstract:
Large transformations in the landscape and subsequent shifts of population have become an integral part of state development projects in western China. In the context of expanding infrastructures such as river damming, large-scale resettlement might appear to represent an effective solution in response to immediate or short-term needs. However, viewed from a long-term perspective it has the potential to unleash a range of major social, economic and environmental effects which may have an impact on not only the affected people and surrounding landscapes. This paper discusses major challenges of relocation evoked through the damming of the Yellow River in Qinghai Province.

Abstract:
Drawing from two separate case studies, one on lower track African American students and another on gay and gender nonconforming African American male students, this article explores how students with multiple stigmatized identities make sense of and respond to their marginalization, a process we term making space. In particular, we consider how making space can support students’ psychosocial needs and at the same time work against school engagement and academic striving. We describe types of “making space” strategies: sociospatial, performative, and political/institutional, and use these categories to describe the ways students in our projects responded to their perceived marginalization. Institutional processes that make these responses necessary are addressed as well as how schools can either mediate or intensify students’ feelings of marginalization and therefore their perceived need to “make space.”

Abstract:
Studies of information technologies in workplaces are of growing significance to people in a broad range of professions and organizations, particularly those involved in the development of new technologies. The authors examine two kinds of information technologies for the support of service technicians, which have been developed in a copier customer service and support company. One is a mobile self-dispatch system with which service technicians monitor a list of customers' requests to repair machines in their service area. The other is a knowledge system. Particular attention is paid to investigating how these systems are embedded in a specific sociotechnological organization and work in service technicians' daily activities. Through the analysis of service technicians' activities, and interviews, the authors show that service technicians organize and make their workspace and activities visible with these technologies.
