Abstract:
Peri-urban landscapes are some of the world’s most vulnerable areas. Although they are often thought of simply as land awaiting development, these landscapes retain important natural resources and make valuable contributions to agriculture, water use, biodiversity conservation, landscape preservation and human well-being. Billions of people use them and enjoy their natural values. Their continuing loss threatens to alter our relationships with nature and have a negative impact on the environment. The Future of the Fringe first explores the history of peri-urban areas, international peri-urban policy and practice, and related concepts. It analyses internationally relevant issues such as green belts and urban growth boundaries, regional policy, land supply and price, and the concepts of liveability, attractiveness, well-being and rural amenity. It then examines a range of Australian peri-urban issues, as an extended case study. The book argues for a precautionary approach so that we retain the greatest number of options to adapt during rapid and unprecedented change.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at how the city's fading foreign-language press and financially challenged labor media were offset by a vociferous conservative suburban press. Simultaneously, large mainstream media outlets began a notable ideological shift toward free market triumphalism, while the surge in far-right national broadcast media and print publications began reaching Milwaukee households. This chapter underlines how the spread of far-right media, far from spontaneous, was generated with the partnership of large corporate interests that privately financed such endeavors even as they publicly espoused support for New Deal principles. Although most corporations publicly remained moderate in their approach to issues such as public provision of social welfare programs and unionization, many joined with “fringe” groups to surreptitiously unravel the postwar New Deal economic order. As such, even businesses that seemingly had bought into commercial Keynesianism played a considerable part in the conservative backlash to the New Deal.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses what makes music an activity or a discipline worthy of study and what about music is worthy of study. It shows how music, like all disciplines worthy of study, can be understood to have cognitive, psychomotor, and affective components. Understanding the hierarchies in each facet and the relationship between the various facets helps teachers understand what music should be taught and in what ways. Music was long considered a fringe subject, but in 2014 it became a core subject in the national curriculum. Leaders within the field have written standards—curriculum guidelines—to help music teachers understand what students should know and be able to do as a consequence of music study.

Abstract:
Bushfire authorities urge people to be ready for summer with a safety plan. Essential Bushfire Safety Tips has everything you need to know to make your bushfire plan with confidence, providing accurate information in an accessible, clear way. In this condensed version of Joan Webster’s acclaimed The Complete Bushfire Safety Book, over 2000 authenticated tips are listed, covering every known bushfire danger and safety factor. This handy book demystifies bushfire behaviour; details the protective action needed at each stage of danger; lists killer and survival factors; discusses evacuation dangers and advantages, how to make a safe ‘stay or go’ decision and sets out safe travel for holidaymakers. It explains how bushfire attacks houses, describes weather factors and safe burning-off procedures and lists home bushfire equipment. Bushfire does not only endanger rural people. More than half of all bushfire tragedies happen in the grassy, leafy, outer city suburbs. Everyone who lives or works in or near the countryside or urban-fringe needs this book. The knowledge it offers can help greatly to reduce dangers to homes and lives, and take the fear out of summer.

Abstract:
The topic of the book is the incremental growth of linguistic knowledge from lexical to structural-cum-textual during the so-called later language development. Language mastery does not presuppose any acquaintance with prescriptive grammar but, instead, concerns the core of language which the so-called consensus principle applies to: the most frequent words and structures are mastered with certainty by everybody, but uncertainty increases as less frequent and more variable phenomena are taken into consideration. It is the goal of the study to make explicit the knowledge that is common to school children of different age groups, and to show how it develops both in its core and in its fringe areas. The mastery of less common aspects exhibits considerable statistical variation. The research embodies methodological pluralism insofar as it has been carried out by means both of the corpus method and the experimental method. Here experimental subsumes writing tasks, paper-and-pencil tests, and behavior under experimental conditions. The amount of participants native in Finnish varies from 300–2000. The book has a bipartite structure: mastery of meanings (Part I), and mastery of forms (Part II).

Abstract:
Southern Australia is one of the three most fire-prone areas on Earth. After more than a century of urban growth and valiant efforts to ‘tame’ the bush, recent decades have seen more people moving back onto the fringe or into the middle of this volatile landscape. As this movement has intensified, so has the debate on how to best protect life and property from the ever-present bushfire threat. A long-running drought and a predicted warming climate have ensured that bushfire is a dominant factor in our nation’s long-term planning. Following the tragic Victorian Black Saturday fires in 2009, a much greater urgency now confronts policy makers, land and fire managers and communities living in bushfire areas. This has led to a call for a single, simple answer on fuel reduction burning to reduce the bushfire risk. Burning Issues explains that this is a complex issue without such a simple answer. The book gives an account of the role of fire in Australia’s ecosystems, how we have to accept and live with fire, and how we can manage fire both for safety and for diversity. It aims to change people’s attitudes to fire, and to be influential in encouraging changes in land management by government agencies.

Abstract:
This book argues that nativism, the hostility especially to Catholic immigrants that led to the organization of political parties like the Know-Nothings, affected the meaning of nineteenth-century American art in ways that have gone unrecognized. In an era of industrialization, nativism’s erection of barriers to immigration appealed to artisans, a category that included most male artists at some stage in their career. But as importantly, its patriotic message about the nature of the American republic also overlapped with widely shared convictions about the necessity of democratic reform. Movements directed toward improving the human condition, including antislavery and temperance, often consigned Catholicism to a repressive past, not the republican American future. To demonstrate the impact of this political effort by humanitarian reformers and nativists to define a Protestant character for the country, the book tracks the work and practice of artist William Walcutt. This book examines him as a case study of an artist whose economic and personal ties to artisanal print culture and cultural nationalists ensured that he was surrounded by and contributed to anti-Catholic publications and organizations. Walcutt was not anti-immigrant himself, nor a member of a nativist party, but his kin, friends, and patrons publicly expressed warnings about Catholic and foreign political influence. And that has implications for better-known nineteenth-century historical and narrative art. Precisely because Walcutt’s profile and milieu was so typical for artists in this period, this book is able to demonstrate how central this supposedly fringe movement was to viewers and makers of American art.

Munro, M. The Map and the Territory. punctum books, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.53288/0319.1.00.

Full text
Abstract:
“I didn’t even know that was a question I could ask.” That remark from a student in an introductory philosophy course points to the primary body of knowledge philosophy produces: a detailed record of what we do not know. When we come to view a philosophical question as well-formed and worthwhile, it is a way of providing as specific a description as we can of something we do not know. The creation or discovery of such questions is like noting a landmark in a territory we’re exploring. When we identify reasonable, if conflicting, answers to this question, we are noting routes to and away from that landmark. And since proposed answers to philosophical questions often contain implied answers to other philosophical questions, those routes connect different landmarks. The result is a kind of map: a map of the unknown. Yet when it comes to the unknown, and all the more so to its cartography, might it not make sense to take our orientation from Borges: What’s in question here, with respect to philosophical questions, is an incipient, unlocalizable threshold—a terrain neither subjective, nor entirely objective, one neither of representation, nor finally of simple immediacy—there where the map perceptibly fails to diverge from the territory. Amid Inclemencies of weather and fringed, as per Borges, with ruin and singular figures—with Animals and Beggars—what’s enclosed is an attempt to chart the contours of this curious immanence.

Watson, Sethina. On Hospitals. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198847533.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book offers a fundamental reconception of the place of welfare institutions in the medieval church, and so of the significance of welfare in Western Christianity. It takes as its subject the treatment of hospitals, xenodochia, almshouses, and leprosaria in church law from the late antique period to the fourteenth century, when the council of Vienne issued its so-called ‘magna carta of hospitals’. The place of hospitals ‘between church and world’ has long caused confusion, not least because popes, canonists, and bishops seem not to have cared about their wayward state. This book charts the legal development of a distinctively Western form of welfare. It goes beyond the councils, collections, and commentaries that made up canon law, into Carolingian capitularies, Justinian’s Code and Novels, and late Roman testamentary law. In so doing, it identifies new legislation and legal initiatives in every period, the contradictory products of law-makers who were working without legal precedent. Here, at the fringes of law, pioneers worked, and forgers played. Their efforts shed light on councils, both familiar and forgotten, and on major figures, including Abbot Ansegis of Saint Wandrille, Abbot Wala of Corbie, the Pseudo-Isidorian forgers, Pope Alexander III, Bernard of Pavia, and Robert de Courson. A new and fundamentally European history of the hospital emerges, which reveals the central place, across a thousand years, of caritas in medieval Christianity. It also charts the rise of a Christian institution that belonged not to bishops and canon law but to any of the faithful.

Hoefer, Carl. Chance in the World. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190907419.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book argues that objective chance, or probability, should not be understood as a metaphysical primitive, nor as a dispositional property of certain systems (“propensity”). Given that traditional accounts of objective probability in terms of frequencies are widely agreed to be also untenable, there is a clear need for a new account that can overcome the problems of older views. A Humean, reductive analysis of objective chance is offered, one partially based on the work of David Lewis, but diverging from Lewis’ approach in many respects. It is shown that “Humean objective chances” (HOCs) can fulfill the role that chances are supposed to play of being a guide to one’s subjective expectations. In a chapter coauthored by Roman Frigg, HOC is shown to make sense of physics’ uses of objective probabilities, both in statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics. And in the final chapter, the relationship between chance and causation is analyzed; it is argued that there is no direct connection between causation and objective chance, but that, instead, causation is related to subjective probability.
