Hoyuelos Álvaro, Francisco Javier, Alba Santamaría Herrera, and Carlos Casado Marcos. Guía para evaluar el riesgo y la prevención en atmósferas explosivas en el sector de la madera. Universidad de Burgos, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36443/9788418465222.

Full text
Abstract:

Palmer, Stephen. Deliberate release of zoonotic agents. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198570028.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 9/11 2001, international attention has once again focused on the risks to human and animal health from the deliberate release of infectious or toxic chemical agents. In theory any agent could be used by terrorists and disaffected people, but the most serious risk for infectious agents are mainly zoonotic (Franz et al. 1997). Three modes of exposure may be anticipated, inhalation of powder or spray or dust from explosives, direct contact or inoculation from an explosion, and ingestion. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) list 19 bioterrorism agents or groups of agents of which 14 are zoonotic. In Category A are 6 agents which can be easily disseminated or transmitted from person to person, that result in high mortality rates and have the potential for major public health impact, which might cause public panic and social disruption and which require special action from public health preparedness. Of these 6, four are zoonoses — Anthrax, Plague, Tularaemia and Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers. In Category B, are 12 groups of agents, which are moderately easy to disseminate and cause moderate morbidity. Of these 12 groups, 8 contain zoonoses: Brucellosis, Food Safety threats (e.g. Salmonella, E.coli 0157, Campylobacter), Meliodiosis, Psittacoccosis, Q Fever, Typhus, Viral encephalitis, Water safety threats (e.g. Cryptosporidium).

Abstract:
Tsunamis, the giant waves that periodically engulf coastal areas and even the shores of lakes and rivers, have had a major impact on the world. Not only have they caused countless deaths but also they have changed nations, societies, and cultures from prehistoric to modern times. This book describes the science of tsunamis and the many ways they can be generated, ranging from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions and explosions, landslides, and others. It also explains how the waves travel across oceans at the speed of a jet airplane and how they focus or disperse their incredible energy. It delves into the clues that ancient tsunamis have left behind to be unraveled by modern science so that we can better understand not only what has happened in the past but also what will happen in the future. The book also explores the human side of tsunami disasters, examining their effect on the residents of impacted communities by recounting the amazing true stories of survival, heroism, and tragic loss. It discusses and provides examples of what works in mitigation, preparedness, warning, response, and recovery from tsunamis; what does not work; and what needs to be done. It contains little-known stories about scientists struggling to better understand these catastrophic waves, while fighting government ignorance and reluctance to take action, as well as amazing chance discoveries and the continued quest to learn more and become better prepared, as every year the odds of yet another catastrophic tsunami increase.

Alter, Karen J. The Evolution of International Law and Courts. Edited by Orfeo Fioretos, Tulia G. Falleti, and Adam Sheingate. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199662814.013.35.

Abstract:
The creation and increased usage of permanent international courts to deal with a broad range of issues is a relatively new phenomenon. The founding dates of international courts suggests that three critical junctures were important in the creation of the contemporary international courts: the Hague Peace conferences and with it the larger movement to regulate inter-state relations through international legal conventions (1899-1927), the post-World War II explosion of international institutions (1945–1952), and the end of the Cold War (1990–2005). Examining the effects of these junctures and gradual changes in the practice of international jurisprudence, this chapter argues that the best way to understand the creation, spread and increased use of ‘new style’ international courts is by paying close attention to the major changes brought about through long-lasting slow processes of international institutional evolution.

Frühholz, Sascha, and Pascal Belin, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Voice Perception. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198743187.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The past decades have seen an explosion of research into the psychological, cognitive, neural, biological, and technical mechanisms of voice perception. These mechanisms refer to the general ability to extract information from voices expressed by other living beings or by technical systems. Voice perception research is now a lively area of research, which is studied from many different perspectives ranging from basic research on the acoustic analysis of vocalizations and the neural and cognitive mechanisms, to comparative research across ages, species, and cultures, up to applied research in the field of machine-based generation and decoding of voices, telecommunication, psychiatry, and neurology. This handbook provides a comprehensive and authoritative overview on all the major research fields related to voice perception, in an accessible form, for a broad readership of students, scholars, and researchers. The handbook is divided into seven major parts, each of which deals with a central perspective on voice perception, including what makes the voice special compared to other acoustic signals, the evolutionary and ontogenetic conditions of voice perception, the social cues extracted from voice signals, the machine-based recognition of voices, and the clinical disorders that affect voice perception.

Abstract:

The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Mathematics and Logic. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195325928.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Math and Logic is a reference about the philosophy of mathematics and the philosophy of logic. Mathematics and logic have been central topics of concern since the dawn of philosophy. Since logic is the study of correct reasoning, it is a fundamental branch of epistemology and a priority in any philosophical system. Philosophers have focused on mathematics as a case study for general philosophical issues and for its role in overall knowledge-gathering. Today, philosophy of mathematics and logic remain central disciplines in contemporary philosophy, as evidenced by the regular appearance of articles on these topics in the best mainstream philosophical journals; in fact, the last decade has seen an explosion of scholarly work in these areas. This volume covers these disciplines, giving the reader an overview of the major problems, positions, and battle lines. The twenty-six articles are by established experts in the field, and these articles contain both exposition and criticism as well as substantial development of their own positions.

Winterbottom, Michael. Papers on Quintilian and Ancient Declamation. Edited by Antonio Stramaglia, Francesca Romana Nocchi, and Giuseppe Russo. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198836056.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Declamation—the practice of training young men to speak in public by setting them to compose and deliver speeches on fictional legal cases—was central to the Greek and Roman educational systems over many centuries and has been the subject of a recent explosion of scholarly interest. This book brings together a broad selection of scholarly work published since 1964. The papers and reviews focus on two related topics: the rhetorician Quintilian and ancient declamation in general. Quintilian, who taught rhetoric at Rome in the second half of the first century AD, was the author of the Institutio oratoria, a key text for Roman educational practice, rhetoric, and literary criticism. Subjects explored here range widely; they cover not only the establishment and interpretation of the text and its literary and historical context, but also Quintilian’s views on inspiration, morality, philosophy, and declamation, of which he was a practitioner. While the volume also offers detailed examinations of the texts and interpretations of a wide range of Latin and Greek authors, such as Seneca the Elder, Sopatros, and Ennodius, there is a particular focus on two collections wrongly attributed to Quintilian, the so-called Minor and Major Declamations. A previously unpublished re-assessment of the manuscript tradition of the latter collection is included here.

Full text
Abstract:
This book argues that we are currently witnessing not merely a decline in the quality of social science research, but a proliferation of meaningless research of no value to society and modest value to its authors—apart from securing employment and promotion. The explosion of published outputs, at least in social science, creates a noisy, cluttered environment which makes meaningful research difficult, as different voices compete to capture the limelight even briefly. Older, but more impressive contributions are easily neglected as the premium is to write and publish, not read and learn. The result is a widespread cynicism among academics on the value of academic research, sometimes including their own. Publishing comes to be seen as a game of hits and misses, devoid of intrinsic meaning and value and of no wider social uses whatsoever. This is what the book views as the rise of nonsense in academic research, which represents a serious social problem. It undermines the very point of social science. This problem is far from ‘academic’. It affects many areas of social and political life entailing extensive waste of resources and inflated student fees as well as costs to taxpayers. The book’s second part offers a range of proposals aimed at restoring meaning at the heart of social science research, and drawing social science back, address the major problems and issues that face our societies.

Abstract:
Abstract Over the last two decades, there have been major advances in imaging, endoscopy, and laparoscopy in the field of gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. GI surgery is the newest super-specialty branch of general surgery where enhanced expertise and high-volume centres have made a difference to the outcomes of complex operations. Surgeons can now do difficult procedures with low morbidity and mortality rates and greatly improved overall results. This volume provides detailed and up-to-date information on diseases of the pancreas. The pancreas continues to fascinate clinicians and researchers worldwide, due to its anatomical location deep inside the abdominal cavity and the various functions of the gland, some of which are well understood, but with others remaining ill defined. Last, but certainly not least, pancreatic surgery, along with liver surgery, remains the final frontier for the vast majority of gastrointestinal and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeons. The information explosion in this era has resulted in cutting-edge developments in acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer. Comprising evidence-based contributions from recognized leaders in pancreatology, this book covers contemporary issues in acute and chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer to help practising surgeons and pancreatologists with the most up-to-date concepts in management. It will be a valuable resource for pancreas specialists, general surgeons with an interest in pancreatic diseases, researchers, and medical students.

Full text
Abstract:
Evolutionary genetics is the study of how genetic variation leads to evolutionary change. With the recent explosion in the availability of whole genome sequence data, vast quantities of genetic data are being generated at an ever-increasing pace with the result that programming has become an essential tool for researchers. Most importantly, a thorough understanding of evolutionary principles is essential for making sense of this genetic data. This up-to-date textbook covers all the major components of modern evolutionary genetics, carefully explaining fundamental processes such as mutation, natural selection, genetic drift, and speciation, together with their consequences. In addition to the text, study questions are provided to motivate the reader to think and reflect on the concepts in each chapter. Practical experience is essential when it comes to developing an understanding of how to use genetic data to analyze and address interesting questions in the life sciences and how to interpret results in meaningful ways. Throughout the book, a series of online, computer-based tutorials serves as an introduction to programming and analysis of evolutionary genetic data centered on the R programming language, which stands out as an ideal all-purpose platform to handle and analyze such data. The book and its online materials take full advantage of the authors’ own experience in working in a post-genomic revolution world, and introduce readers to the plethora of molecular and analytical methods that have only recently become available.

Abstract:

Allen, Michael, and Scott R. Swain, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Reformed Theology. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198723912.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Reformed theology remains one of the most vibrant fields of discussion in the study of Christian faith and practice. This volume looks back to past resources that have informed Reformed theology, and surveys present conversations among those engaged in Reformed theology today. First, the volume offers accounts of the major historical contexts of Reformed theology, the various relationships (ancient and modern) which it maintains and from which it derives. Recent research has shown the intricate ties between the patristic and medieval heritage of the church and the work of the Reformed movement in the sixteenth century. The past century has also witnessed an explosion of Reformed theology outside the Western world, prompting a need for attention not only to these global voices but also to the unique (and contingent) history of Reformed theology in the West (hence reflecting on its relationship to intellectual developments like scholastic method or the critical approaches of modern biblical studies). Second, the volume assesses some of the classic, representative texts of the Reformed tradition, observing also their reception history. The Reformed movement is not dominated by a single figure, but it does contain a host of paradigmatic texts that demonstrate the range and vitality of Reformed thought on politics, piety, biblical commentary, dogmatic reflection, and social engagement. Third, the volume turns to key doctrines and topics that continue to receive attention by Reformed theologians today. Contributors who are themselves making cutting-edge contributions to constructive theology today reflect on the state of the question, and offer their own proposals regarding a host of doctrinal topics and themes.
