Full textVolatile Organic Compounds (VOC) play a key role in atmospheric chemistry influencing climate and air quality. Vegetation is the main source of VOC, accounting for 90% of biogenic emissions (BVOC). Agricultural crops in Europe are estimated to contribute 27% of total BVOC emissions but remain poorly studied. In this work, we study the exchange of BVOC by wheat, rapeseed and maize, the main agricultural species in France in terms of cultivated area. The fluxes were measured in the field at the plant level with dynamic automated chambers coupled to a PTR-Qi-Tof-MS spectrometer. Fluxes of up to 997 compounds could be measured with this highly sensitive instrument. Chapter 1 presents a review of BVOC emission mechanisms, flux measurement methods, experimental results on BVOC exchanges in agricultural systems, and mathematical models of emissions. Chapter 2 describes the measurement site and the experimental setup. Chapter 3 presents BVOC fluxes measured during one week for each species. Emissions were dominated by methanol (55-85% of total emissions) followed by acetone and acetaldehyde. The 10 most emitted compounds excluding methanol accounted for more than 50% of total emissions and the 100 most emitted compounds accounted for more than 90%. The measured fluxes showed little intra-species variation but large inter-species variations with total net fluxes of 0.11±0.02 µg_BVOC g_DW^(-1) h^(-1) for maize, 1.5±0.7 µg_COVB g_MS^(-1) h^(-1) for wheat, and 9.1±2.4 µg_COVB g_MS^(-1) h^(-1) for rapeseed. Finally, standard emission factors for isoprene and monoterpenes were evaluated for each species, constituting the first known estimates for rapeseed. Chapter 4 examines the influence of developmental stages, and particularly of senescence, on BVOC emissions from wheat. We report a doubling of total emissions during senescence compared to maturation, with, in particular, an increase in the contribution of acetaldehyde (1.6% of total emissions during maturation and 9.7% during senescence) and acetic acid (0.7% during maturation and 2.7% during senescence). In Chapter 5 the main parameters of the MEGAN 2.1 model are estimated for the three species and the fluxes of six main compounds measured for rapeseed at the plant level by the dynamic chambers are compared with measurements by Eddy Covariance at the ecosystem level in order to evaluate the representativeness of chamber measurement. This work shows the heterogeneity of BVOC exchanges by agricultural plants and the data generated should contribute to the improvement of emission models

Full textWhile we are observing a decline in insect biodiversity in relation to global changes, some species of crop pests continue to threaten food security worldwide. This is the case for lepidopterans maize stem borers, which pose a major threat to maize production. It is therefore essential to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of global changes and particularly of global warming on maize stem borer populations. Pest responses to global warming can result in contrasting responses depending on the species and trait studied. Among these traits, development rate, i.e. the inverse of development time, is of primary importance given its close dependence to ambient temperature. The development rate quantifies the developmental progression of life stages per unit of time, so that mathematical modeling approaches of the relationship between development rate and temperature can contribute to assess the impact of climate warming on crop pest populations. The objective of this work is to contribute to improve the quantification of the relationship between development rate and temperature by mathematical modeling approaches, and to evaluate the impact of global warming on the development rate of maize stem borers in tropical and temperate climates.Fitting models of developmental rate as a function of temperature to empirical data acquired by rearing individuals at different temperatures has been a widespread method for several decades. Numerous modeling studies have been published, but modeling practices vary considerably within the literature, both in terms of the mathematical models fitted and the experimental protocol, as well as the statistical methods of inference and model selection. In response to this limitation, a study of the influence of experimental protocol on model fitting using a simulation approach, as well as a literature review to establish common and shared modeling and model selection practices were conducted. As a result of global warming, the development time of insect pests could be accelerated or slowed, with impacts to be assessed on pest populations and associated crops. The impacts of different climate warming scenarios on the development time of maize stem borers were evaluated via a mathematical modeling approach for four maize stem borers in temperate and tropical regions. Results show that insect response differs between species and scenarios. This study predicts changes in development time, the magnitude and direction of which depend notably on the optimal temperature for development. While a predominantly shorter development time is expected, the simulations suggest a delay or even a halt for species whose environmental temperature is close to their optimal development temperature. The integration of the non-linear relationship of development rate to temperature thus provides information on future changes in the temporal dynamics of populations. Our analyses indicate that in the absence of mitigating factors such as acclimation, adaptation or dispersal, the developmental time of maize stem borers will be altered, with consequences for their phenology, inter-specific interactions within agro-ecosystems, as well as for maize cultivation and associated crop protection practices

Full textCover crops have been mainly used to limit soil erosion and water bodies contamination, particularly by nitrates. Their introduction in cropping systems leads to physical, chemical, and biological changes in the soil environment that are likely to influence the fate of pesticides in the soil after application. This thesis studies the impact of the presence of cover crops on the soil surface on two major processes involved in the fate of pesticides - adsorption and degradation, and for two herbicides frequently found in water bodies - glyphosate and S-metolachlor. Adsorption measurements performed in laboratory on 9 types of cover crop mulches show that the adsorption level of the herbicides studied is higher when they are intercepted by decomposed cover crop residues compared to fresh ones, to an extend that depends on the cover crop species and the herbicide physicochemical properties. A predictive model of the sorption level increase as a function of the cover crop residues mineralization is proposed. Monitoring the degradation of radiolabeled herbicides in microcosms under controlled conditions made it possible to compare herbicide fate in soil with that in soil covered with cover crop residues (or mulch). The results show that the herbicide dissipation pathways are different in bare soil compared to mulch-covered soil. A higher immobilization of herbicides in mulches (formation of strongly bound residues), and a variability related to the type of cover crop studied were observed. In addition, the study of the effect of the decomposition degree of cover crops mulches at the time of herbicide application (studied only for S-metolachlor) shows a relationship between the proportion of herbicide intercepted by mulch and the herbicide half-life. The results of the three studies presented in this thesis are discussed with respect to their implications for the environmental assessment of cropping systems. The consideration of soil surface crop residues in soil pesticide transfer models is identified as a challenge to better describe field situations, and thus to better evaluate cropping systems that are in full boom in temperate zone agrosystems. These assessments enable to identify agricultural practices that limit the risk of pollution of water bodies

Full textAbstract Weight and eating-related disorders and behaviours are common among adolescent girls and young women in Western societies, where thin bodies are highly valued. The goal of this study was to examine whether or not more frequent exposure to places promoting thinness is associated with greater weight concerns among women. This study was part of a larger investigation entitled ¨Social, cultural, and economic disparities and disordered eating: Understanding the contribution of neighbourhood and individual level factors¨ (Gauvin, Steiger, & Brodeur, 2009). A sample of 1288 women aged 20 to 40 years and living in Montreal for at least 12 months responded to a telephone survey. Logistic regression analyses were performed comparing women in the highest quintile of weight concerns to women in other quintiles on frequentations of thin-promoting places 15 days or more. Further, a sensitivity analysis was performed to verify whether or not an association exists between high weight concerns and different levels of exposure to places promoting socio-cultural standards for thinness. A series of confounding variables were statistically controlled. Results showed that exposure to places promoting socio-cultural standards for thinness at least 15 days per month was significantly associated with greater weight concerns among women despite controlling for confounding variables. Further, going to places promoting thinness between at least 15 through 20 days/month was also associated greater weight concerns among women. Public health interventions could aim at reducing societal pressures to thinness.
