Abstract:
The Appalachian Trail (AT) is among the crown jewels of hiking trails worldwide. An opportunity to design the maps of the AT in Maine was more than just another job—as Maine residents and avid outdoorsmen we felt a personal responsibility, and honor, to take on this task. We embarked on a digital odyssey of sorts, manipulating terrain models and referencing existing paper sources, all the while designing with a strong humanistic element. These maps will be used to plan, attempt, and complete adventures in what some consider to be the most stunning trail landscape in New England. The project, similar to the trail, offered some unexpected challenges. This paper chronicles our journey along the design and production paths of Maine’s Appalachian Trail.

Abstract:
As part of a project to develop a productivity-oriented site classification system for spruce and fir in Maine, multivariate analyses of meteorological data were used to partition the state into homogeneous climatic zones. Data were obtained for 63 weather stations reporting both temperature and precipitation in Maine during the period 1954–1983. Monthly means were computed for each variable over the period of record and summarized by four 3-month seasons. Eighty-two percent of the variation in the 37 variables was accounted for by the first three principal components. Cluster analysis identified eight homogeneous groups of weather stations. Results from the principal components analysis were spatially extrapolated across the state using stepwise regression to define the relationship between the first two principal components and the location variables latitude, longitude, and elevation. Principal component scores were predicted across the state along a grid composed of township line intersections. The Triangulated Irregular Network of ARCINFO, a geographic information system software package, was used to spatially summarize the predicted component scores into climagraphic maps. The combined results from cluster analysis and spatial extrapolation of the principal components analysis suggested the presence of four broad climatic regions, which were further subdivided into nine climatic zones. Overlap among the four regions and nine zones was evaluated with a jackknifed classification of a linear discriminant function. Ninety-four percent of the weather stations were correctly classified by climatic region, whereas 76% were correctly classified by climatic zone. The high degree of correspondence between climatic zones and biophysical regions reinforced results of the multivariate analyses.

Abstract:
Abstract A forest change detection map was developed to document forest gains and losses during the decade of the 1990s. The effectiveness of the Landsat imagery and methods for detecting Maine forest cover change are indicated by the good accuracy assessment results: forest—no change, forest loss, and forest gain accuracy were 90, 88, and 92%, respectively, and the good correlation of mapped areas of forest cover loss with forest inventory analysis (FIA) tree size class decrease at the county level. The combination of annually collected permanent FIA plots with accurate statewide forest change maps offers a complementary perspective of Maine's forest resource.

Abstract:
Abstract Life-history strategies often vary within motile marine species, affecting morphometry, growth, diet, and fecundity. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the Gulf of Maine display marked variation in a number of life-history traits, exemplified by differences in body colour. Migratory behaviours are suspected to differ among these colour types, but have yet to be shown definitively. Here, we used the combination of an acoustic telemetry system and fine-scale benthic habitat maps to reveal that the red phenotype cod adhered to an isolated kelp forest covering <2 km2 of a seamount in the central Gulf of Maine. Meanwhile, the olive phenotype cod adopted diel vertical migratory behaviour, possibly in response to a temperature gradient. Use of shallow, structured habitat was influenced by temperature and may be enabled by dynamic conditions related to internal waves that persist throughout the summer and early fall. Detections decreased in response to changing thermal conditions, although phenotypes reacted to these changes in distinct ways: the olive phenotype abandoned shallow habitat prior to peak summer temperatures, while the red phenotype remained until mid-fall when temperatures and temperature variability declined. Our findings support a link between morphometry, colour, behavioural strategies, and habitat preferences that may be widespread in Atlantic cod.

Abstract:
Abstract Fifteen years of regional monitoring by the New England Seismic Network indicated a locally high level of seismicity near South Sebec, between the towns of Milo and Dover-Foxcroft in central Maine. Most of the events were located in a diffuse zone south of the distinctive, ENE trending Harriman Pond Fault (HPF) which is indicated by brittle deformation in outcrop and is represented as a depression in topographic maps and satellite images. A portable network consisting of both digital and analog instruments was deployed during the summers of 1989 and 1990 in order to characterize the pattern of the microearthquakes and to determine high-resolution epicenters, depths, and fault plane solutions. Seventy-three events were detected during the experiment, of which 28 could be located. Many of the events south of the fault lie along a NNW trending line which has no major expression in the surface geology. Only, a few of the events are subparallel to the HPF. The first motion data were insufficient for the determination of any fault plane solutions.

Abstract:
Abstract In the sawmill sector of the forest products industry, the clustering of mills and wide variation in forest stocking and ownership result in sawlog markets that are complex and spatially differentiated. Despite the inherent spatial attributes of markets for stumpage and logs, few studies have used geospatial methods to examine wood procurement in detail across political boundaries. This article provides a visual representation of wood procurement pressure across the Northern Forest region of the northeastern United States based on a spatial analysis of woodshed maps provided by 273 sawmills in the United States and Canada. The analysis also includes the predicted woodsheds of 280 nonrespondent mills, which were modeled based on mill characteristics and location. In general, maps emphasize the magnitude of softwood procurement on industrial and investment-oriented forestlands in northern Maine, but also highlight distinct spatial procurement patterns in New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Sensitivity analyses of woodshed boundary uncertainty suggest that procurement pressure in existing hotspots will intensify if procurement range is restricted by high transportation costs. The methods used to visualize resource procurement in this study have the potential to benefit a broad range of stakeholders including industry, policymakers, and landowners.

Abstract:
Abstract A well-designed method of establishing, maintaining, and remeasuring permanent plots plays an essential role in long-term data collection. This article describes the re-location of plots set up 25 years earlier using conventional techniques of paced distances and compass directions. As a result, we needed to design and use a method for re-locating plot markers originally established without the benefit of spatial coordinates. Preplanned ground searches using a GIS, digital orthophotoquads, landmark maps, and aerial photographs improved our plot location efficiency and success. In 2003, we were able to re-locate 90% of the plots set up in 1978 to measure the vegetation dynamics after a fire in Baxter State Park, Maine. The spatial coordinates of these permanent plots were documented for future measurement. Lessons learned and techniques developed for this project can facilitate the re-location of permanent plots in other studies and can also be used to improve the documentation of newly established plot locations.

Abstract:
Three deep-penetration seismic reflection profiles were collected off southwest Nova Scotia to determine the crustal structure and geometry beneath the Avalon and Meguma zones of the Appalachian Orogen in Canada. Onshore geological features have been traced seawards using new gravity and magnetic anomaly maps. The seismic data can also be correlated with the previous United States Geological Survey profile in the central Gulf of Maine. Two seismically distinct lower crustal blocks are identified: the Avalon and Sable lower crustal blocks, separated by a major north-dipping reflection zone that cuts the entire crust. The recognition of the Sable block adds a fourth block to the three already identified in the Canadian Appalachians. The Sable block is overlain by the Meguma Zone. The Avalon Zone overlies at least the northern part of the Avalon lower crustal block. Although offshore extension of geological features is not unequivocal, it appears that a north-dipping reflection zone southwest of Nova Scotia marks the site of Devonian thrusting of Avalon Zone over Meguma Zone. In the Bay of Fundy to the north, two south-dipping reflection zones are interpreted as major thrusts, possibly placing Avalon lower crust over a unit with different tectonic affinities. The Fundy Fault is a Carboniferous thrust within the Avalon block along the coast of New Brunswick; this was reactivated during Mesozoic extension as a transtensional fault. Extensional displacement farther southwest was probably accommodated along east-west-trending faults and small rift basins associated with them.

Abstract:
Abstract Evidence for rejuvenation of cirque glaciers following wastage of continental ice remains elusive for the Presidential Range and Mount Moosilauke of New Hampshire, Mount Katahdin and the Longfellow Mountains of Maine, and the Adirondack Mountains of New York. At Ritterbush Pond in the northern Green Mountains of Vermont, radiocarbon ages from lake sediment cores suggest that a low-altitude valley head, located up- valley of a series of cross-valley moraines, was ice-free by 11,940 14 C yrs BP (Bierman et al. , 1997). Although some workers argue that these moraines in Vermont are evidence for cirque glaciation, the moraines could have been formed by a tongue of continental ice during deglaciation. At Johnson Hollow Brook valley in the Catskill Mountains of New York, a radiocarbon age from basal sediments in a pond dammed by a moraine suggests that glacier ice may have persisted until 10,860 14 C yrs BP (Lederer and Rodbell, 1998). Because this moraine appears to have been deposited by a cirque glacier, the radiocarbon age provides the best evidence in the northeastern United States for cirque glaciation post-dating recession of continental ice. Cirque morphometric data, compiled from newly available topographic maps, add to the conundrum that these two sites in the Green and Catskill Mountains should not be nearly as favorable for maintaining local glaciers post- dating icesheet recession as higher-altitude and better-developed cirques in the Presidential Range and Mount Katahdin, where evidence for post-icesheet cirque glaciers is lacking.

Abstract:
Abstract. The Mainz profile algorithm (MAPA) derives vertical profiles of aerosol extinction and trace gas concentrations from MAX-DOAS measurements of slant column densities under multiple elevation angles. This paper presents (a) a detailed description of the MAPA (v0.98), (b) results for the CINDI-2 campaign, and (c) sensitivity studies on the impact of a priori assumptions such as flag thresholds. Like previous profile retrieval schemes developed at MPIC, MAPA is based on a profile parameterization combining box profiles, which also might be lifted, and exponential profiles. But in contrast to previous inversion schemes based on least-square fits, MAPA follows a Monte Carlo approach for deriving those profile parameters yielding best match to the MAX-DOAS observations. This is much faster and directly provides physically meaningful distributions of profile parameters. In addition, MAPA includes an elaborated flagging scheme for the identification of questionable or dubious results. The AODs derived with MAPA for the CINDI-2 campaign show good agreement with AERONET if a scaling factor of 0.8 is applied for O4, and the respective NO2 and HCHO surface mixing ratios match those derived from coincident long-path DOAS measurements. MAPA results are robust with respect to modifications of the a priori MAPA settings within plausible limits.

Abstract. Society relies on infrastructure, but as infrastructure systems are often collocated and interdependent, they are vulnerable to cascading failures. This study investigated cross-infrastructure and societal impacts of burst water mains, with the hypothesis that multi-infrastructure failures triggered by burst water mains are more common in sandy soils. When water mains in sandy soils burst, pressurised water can create subsurface voids and abrasive slurries, contributing to further infrastructure failures. Three spatial data investigations, at nested scales, were used to assess the influence that soil sand content has on the frequency and damage caused by burst water mains (1) to roads in the county of Lincolnshire, (2) to other proximal water mains in East Anglia and (3) to other proximal infrastructure and wider society across England and Wales. These investigations used infrastructure network and failure data, media reports and soil maps, and were supported by workshop discussions and structured interviews with infrastructure industry experts. The workshop, interviews and media reports produced a greater depth of information on the infrastructure and societal impacts of cascading failures than the analysis of infrastructure data. Cross-infrastructure impacts were most common on roads, built structures and gas pipes, and they occurred at a higher rate in soils with very high sand contents.

Changing the conditions of offshore environment influences the offshore units' stability. In paper, a study of the impact of marine environment on a jackup rig was implemented. Firstly, the procedures of departure, transit, and emplacement on any emergency jacking location / stand by location are reviewed. After that, the conditions of weather forecasting are predicted and computed such as wave and wind lengths, speeds, and heights. Maps of changing wind and wave conditions are plotted. Surveying methods are used to determine the final location of the jackup rig. Maps of positioning the jackup rig are constructed. Additionally, the impact forces on the rig derrick are therefore computed. The developed results are effectively predicting the safe conditions and optimizing the positioning survey of the rig.

Abstract:
The influence of various ways of regulation in weed infestation of silage maize stands was studied in 1999–2001. Four variants of stands were compared: 1. without weed eradication (check), 2. mechanically weeded throughout the whole vegetation period, 3. mechanically weeded from the beginning of vegetation till the phase of 5th leaf and later on without protection, 4. chemical weeding. The yield of dry mass and morphological characters (height of plants, stem diameter, number of ears per plant etc.) show the substantial negative effect of weed infestation upon the studied parameters. The yield from the check variant reached 8.09 t/ha, from the 2nd variant 13.24 t/ha, from the 3rd variant 11.46 t/ha and from the 4th variant 12.34 t/ha. The decrease of mass in individual parts of plants were observed but their percentage portions were not affected by the level of weed infestation. A high dependence ( = 0.01) between the mass of the whole plant and the ear mass (r = 0.98) was proved. The total number of leaves was not affected by the level of treatment. The results show that the mechanical cultivation of stands at the beginning of vegetation cannot prevent the yield depression cost by weed infestation and the studied parameters cannot reach the level of fully weeded variants.

Abstract:
Under nutrient stress, low molecular weight organic acids are released in rhizosphere, which dissolve the crystalline layered silicate minerals and subsequently some short range order (SRO) minerals may be formed. To analyze this hypothesis, a controlled greenhouse experiment was conducted with three contrasting soils belonging to Alfisols, Inceptisols and Vertisols order in two phases, viz. Sorghum-sudangrass depletion and test crop experiment on maize. The SROs were measured by selective dissolutions. The results indicate that, NaOH extractable amorphous ferri-alumino silicate was higher in rhizosphere, whereas mild extractant extractable SRO dissolution was increased due to fertilization and rhizospheric effect. Fourier transform infrared band showed changes in 3400–3600/cm region (adsorbed water) and Si-O stretching vibration (1000/cm). This information will provide a new insight in formation of SROs under the rhizospheric environment.

The effects of three tillage systems: no-tillage (NT), reduced tillage (RT) and conventional tillage (CT), and three levels of fertilization (0, 258 and 516 kg/ha NPK (58:18:24)), on the maize yield during ten years (1999–2008) were analyzed on the chernozem soil type in Zemun Polje, Serbia. Statistical analyses showed significant effects of all three factors i.e., year, soil tillage and amount of fertilizers, and their interactions on the maize yield. The ten-year averages showed that the highest yields were observed with CT (10.61 t/ha), while the averages with RT and NT were lower (8.99 t/ha and 6.85 t/ha, respectively). The results of the influence of the amount of the applied fertilizers on maize yield showed that the lowest yield was in the zero level of fertilization 7.71 t/ha, while the yield was raised when the 258 kg/ha and 516 kg/ha NPK were applied (9.18 t/ha and 9.56 t/ha, respectively). Analyzing the influence of the soil tillage systems on maize production with respect to the amounts of applied fertilizers, this research revealed the benefits of CT under the presented agroecological conditions, irrespective of the level of applied fertilizer.

Abstract:
Soil microorganisms are critical to maintain soil function, enhance plant health and increase crop yields. This study investigated the effects of organic matter on soil microbial community and assessed which of soil microbes were in positive correlation to maize yields. The results showed that different fertilizer treatments shaped specific microbial communities in the same soils. The most abundant beneficial soil microbes were found in treatments with organic fertilizer produced from cattle manure, return of wheat straw and 70% NPK admixture fertilizers treatment. The correlation analysis revealed that maize yields were in no correlation both to the shifts of soil microbial community structure and to the number of sequences or operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in soil microbes. However, maize yields were in positive correlation to microbial community structure shifts at the species level. 35 bacteria OTUs from 19 orders in 14 classes in 9 phyla were in positive correlation to yields of maize, while in fungi only one OTU25 belonging to Sordariales was in positive correlation. Our results indicate that the long-term application of organic and inorganic amendments could enrich the soil bacterial and fungal community and promote its diversity.

Abstract:
The present study was carried out in 2016–2017 to assess the effect of subsoiling depth on the soil bulk density, stability of soil structure, soil physical properties and summer maize yield based on a field experiment started in 2015. Four tillage depths were studied: conventional tillage 25 cm (CT25); subsoiling tillage 30 cm (ST30); subsoiling tillage 35 cm (ST35) and subsoiling tillage 40 cm (ST40). The results showed that at the 20–50 cm depth ST30, ST35 and ST40 decreased the mean soil bulk by 4.59, 7.13 and 8.27%, respectively, and at the 0–40 cm depth reduced soil compactness by 17.62, 23.63 and 36.42%, respectively, as compared to CT25. ST40 reduced soil compactness in the 0–40 cm soil layer under conditions of relative drought (during the maize season growing season of 2016), ST35 and ST40 increased macroaggregates (> 0.25 mm), improved the stability of the aggregate structure (geometric mean diameter and mean weight diameter) (20–40 cm), increased soil water storage capacity at 40–60 cm and increased maize yield by 7.89% and 8.91%, respectively. Considering the improvement of soil properties and crop yield, ST35 was the optimum method to increase maize yield and modulate soil physical properties in the North China Plain.

Abstract:
Cell wall digestibility is an important quality trait of modern silage maize cultivars. The symbiotic relationship between microbes and ruminant livestock enables the efficient upcycling of otherwise for human consumption unsuitable rumen digestible fibre or cell wall components into highly nutritious milk and meat. Before entering the Czech National List of Plant Varieties, new silage maize germplasm is extensively tested for different cell wall digestibility parameters. Recently published, the undigestible neutral detergent fibre (uNDF) cell wall digestibility approach promises even greater practical relevance. The aim of our study was, therefore, to assess the potential of the uNDF method, compared with current standard procedures, using a vast set of official Czech plant variety trial evaluations and Czech silage analyses from the 2018 cropping season. The uNDF method yielded a twice as high phenotypic standard deviation, compared with the current standard approaches. This is good news for plant breeders, official variety testing organisations, and farm professionals alike, enabeling faster variety improvement and simpler variety selection. On the other hand, due to the low differentiation potential, we discourage the use of the absolute lignin content when selecting for digestible silage maize varieties. Since between the digestibility traits enzymatic soluble organic substance (ELOS) and cellulase digestibility (DCS), a Pearson correlation close to one was observed, the substitution of one of these analytics by the uNDF method, may render valuable additional information in a highly economical manner.

Abstract:
Background: For patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)-the most common form of leukemia in older adults-equitable access to care is particularly challenging, as the disease is often diagnosed in community cancer centers encumbered by regional disparities. Therefore, identifying and understanding regional barriers to care is essential. In 2020, the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) developed a heat map detailing the incidence rate of CLL diagnoses across the country (Fig.1), overlayed with the locations of CLL “expert” providers, revealing the areas in the US most in need of additional CLL clinical expertise (Fig. 2). In 2022, these incidence rates were stratified by race, ethnicity, and metropolitan statistical area to identify disparities Building on these maps, ACCC set out to identify specific regional challenges to appropriate, equitable care for patients with CLL. Methods: As part of an independent education program, ACCC initiated conversations with providers about the regional barriers that patients with CLL face. Through 4 webinars in February 2023, participants from 4 regions-Northeast (New York and Maine), Northwest (Montana and Idaho), Midwest (Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa), and Southwest (Texas)-shared insights on challenges and exchanged ideas on strategies to improve care for patients with CLL. In addition, ACCC interviewed 3 regionally diverse cancer programs (from the US Northwest, South, and Southwest regions) that are effectively overcoming regional challenges to reach their patient populations and provide equitable care. These interviews highlighted barriers and challenges, showcased effective outreach campaigns, and explored how the outreach improved the patient journey. Findings: The following themes emerged as key challenges and potential solutions throughout all regions studied: (1) Comprehensive Diagnostic Work-up Before Treatment Initiation: A key component in caring for patients with CLL is identifying certain disease related criteria prior to formulating a treatment plan. This includes determining the disease burden, disease-related symptoms, and if the patient meets certain active disease criteria (eg, Binet Stage C or Rai Stage III or IV). Further, by utilizing genetic testing, such as the TP53 gene mutation and IGHV mutation tests, physicians can estimate time to treatment and choice of specific novel targeted therapies. (2) Understanding Patient Population Needs: Cancer programs must understand the needs of their unique patient populations to effectively address them. For example, in the Northwest, as mountainous passes can make travel dangerous at times, one local program utilizes near-campus housing/hotel space for patients for the duration of their intensive treatment. In the Southwest, addressing health insurance coverage, low health literacy, language barriers, patient-provider mistrust, and culturally competent care for undocumented individuals presents challenges to equitable care delivery. Therefore, cancer programs in this region have implemented protocols to utilize community and social services to help support these patients. (3) Developing Community Partnerships: As the median age of diagnosis with CLL is approximately 70 years old, barriers such as transportation availability, caregiver support and financial constraints could be magnified. Building trust, particularly among vulnerable communities, also presents a significant challenge. By partnering with community outreach organizations, programs can help address these issues through community resources such as ride share programs, transportation vouchers, and financial assistance programs. (4) Provider Education and Learning: Because many patients are diagnosed in community cancer programs and smaller practices where physicians do not often have experience with CLL, nationally available provider education on new developments in testing and treatments is key. Conclusions: ACCC identified regional challenges and solutions to appropriate and equitable care for patients with CLL, including the importance of comprehensive diagnostic work-up before treating, understanding the regional needs of patient populations (particularly underserved populations), building community partnerships, and engaging in targeted provider education.
