Full textThis study was in partnership with the Maine International Trade Center. The Maine International Trade Center was formed to help Maine businesses develop trade internationally and successfully network with international businesses, and connect with governmental and business professionals globally. Maine’s leaders have added resources to the Maine International Trade Center, feeling that it is crucial to Maine’s economic recovery. Maine’s International Trade Center and the Maine Legislature commissioned an extensive research study in 2013. The outcome from this study was the need for further research on global competencies, citizenship and leadership.
The global economies are more connected than any other time in history, consequently so is business. Businesses are competing globally; cost and performance pressures are relentless. Our societies are changing, some having more, and some having less. This study researched the phenomenon of the global citizen leader, and what the cognitive, metacognitive, attitudes and behaviors are for successful executive level business professionals, who are engaged in international trade and global assignments. By studying the dimensions of cultural intelligence, social responsibility, global competence and global civic engagement rich schemas of the complex construct of a global citizen leader came from the experience and stories of thirteen Maine leaders.

The primary goal for this project was to help expand the existing capability of Sikorsky's main rotor blade business from raw material (titanium) through final assembly. The project helped to facilitate the ongoing lean transformation as the factory makes the journey to single-piece flow. During the internship, monthly kaizen events were used to help focus efforts on different areas of the value stream. These activities resulted in changes in the following areas: decrease in cycle times and lead times, reduction in inventory, procedural changes, and a future plan to physically change the factory floor to improve flow.

Full textMain group supramolecular chemistry is a rapidly expanding field that combines the tools of coordination chemistry with the unusual and frequently unexpected coordination preferences exhibited by the main group elements. Application of established supramolecular design principles to those elements provides access to novel structure types and the possibility of new functionality introduced by the rich chemistry of the main group. Chapter I is a general review of the field of main group supramolecular chemistry, focusing in particular on the aspects of coordination chemistry and rational design strategies that have been thus far used to prepare polynuclear "metal"-ligand assemblies. Chapter II is a discussion of work toward supramolecular assemblies based on the coordination preferences of lead(II), in particular focusing on the 2-mercaptoacetamide and arylthiolate functionalities to target four-coordinate and three-coordinate geometries, respectively. Several possible avenues for further pursuing this research are suggested, with designs for ligands that may provide a more fruitful approach to the coordination of lead(II). Chapter III deals with the preparation of As 2 L 3 assemblies based on flexible ligand scaffolds. These assemblies exhibit structural changes in response to temperature and solvent, which may provide some insight into the subtle shape requirements involved in supramolecular guest binding. Chapter IV continues this work with an examination of how ligand structure affects mechanical coupling of stereochemistry between metal centers when the chelate ring is completed by a secondary bonding interaction such as the As-π contact. Finally, Chapter V presents a crystallographic and synthetic study of the nature of the interaction between pnictogens and arene rings. This interaction is ubiquitous in the coordination chemistry performed in the Johnson laboratory; understanding the role these interactions play in determining the final structure of supramolecular assemblies is vital to the preparation of more complex structures. Chapter VI presents a set of conclusions and outlook for future work on lead(II) supramolecular assemblies and the dynamic assemblies prepared from flexible organic scaffolds. This dissertation contains previously published and coauthored material.

Full textLeader-Member Exchange theory analyse work relationships between leader and member. Leader-Member Exchange theory underlines that leader forms distinct quality relationships with each member. The theory is meaningful also because leader and member are treated as both equally important for creation of work relationships. We used in our research Leader-Member Exchange multidimensional model, created by R. C. Liden and J. M. Maslyn (1998), which states that leader-member exchanges are more complex than general leader-member exchange quality index and involves affect, loyalty, contribution and professional respect dimensions. Leader-member exchange quality process is conditioned by communication between leader and member. Also, organizational commitment, work satisfaction and so on of leaders and member are conditioned by Leader-member exchange quality. In our research we made assumption that leader-member exchange quality is mediate variable between feedback of leader and member and organizational commitment and work satisfaction of leader and member. Our research indicates that feedback between leader and member is important indicator of leader-member exchange quality prognosis. Leader-member exchange quality prognosticates not all aspects of organizational commitment and work satisfaction of leader and member, still, according to research results, we can state that leader-member exchange quality is mediate variable between feedback of leader and member and organizational... Full textIon imprinted polymers (IIP) are highly cross-linked porous materials with specific recognition cavities of a target ion. Thus, this kind of materials shows high selectivity. This work focuses on the preparation of fluorescent ion-imprinted polymers specific to lead (11), i.e. capable of transforming the ion recognition into a fluorescence signal, for the detection of this contaminant in marine environment. ln a first step, the strategy adopted was to select and synthesise a fluorescent ligand, specific to lead (11) and t study and use it for the preparation of the polymers. This ligand was modified to produce a styrene type fluorescent monomer (ANQ-ST). An exaltation of the fluorescence signal of ANQ-ST was observed along with lead Il addition. The second ste was dedicated to the develo ment of the lead Il ion-im rinted ol mers. Various parameters were tested: polymerization solvants, nature of crosslinking agent (EGDMA and DVB) and ANQ-ST/crosslinker ratio (2 % and 5% molar). A diversified panel of characterization techniques allowed to study the polymer structures and to evidence the integration of the functional monomer ANQ-ST inside the polymer matrix. The last step consisted in evaluating the performances of the IIPs for the detection of lead (Il) by fluorescence. The polymers prepared with EGDMA and 5 % of functional monomer showed the best results For these polymers, IIPs' fluorescence intensity in the presence of lead (11) was almost not impacted by the addition of interfering ion species, unlike their non-imprinted analogs. These results highlight the effectiveness of the imprinting effect. Calibration curves were established in aqueous media at different pH and in different matrices. Those parameters did not have major influences. The limits of detection obtained are below the World Health Organization recommendation (10 µg.L-1 ). These results were successfully validated by the detection of lead in natural samples, includinçi tests in marine media

Full textThe master mariner students at Kalmar Maritime Academy have twelve months of ship-based training which is a part of the education plan, and these twelve months are distributed over three periods. The internship offers the students the opportunity to practice and develop the theoretical knowledge they have gained in school, but also to experience how it really is to work at sea. The work environment, the social environment and what it can be like to be away from home for a longer period are central. Working at sea has many benefits but also its challenges. The job is associated with long periods at sea with a high workload and high demands on the organization on board, as well as safety and environmental awareness. As a master mariner student at Kalmar Maritime Academy, you end up in this environment during your first year of education when you leave school for the first internship period during semester one. This study aims to investigate how master mariner students experience that lack of sleep, contract length and working hours on board affect their knowledge acquisition. To find out the students' experiences, a qualitative interview study was conducted with six master mariner students; only senior year students were interviewed because they had completed all or a large part of the ship-based training and were therefore considered to have the most experience. The answers were in most cases consistent where the students felt that the internship periods and working days were too long, that they needed to have at least one day off a week and that lack of sleep had a negative impact on their knowledge acquisition. At the same time, the study showed what would be the optimal for the master mariner students' knowledge acquisition, in terms of optimal length of internship periods and optimal work schedule for a rewarding and effective internship as possible.

Full textThis thesis is part of a research project conducted by the French Institut de Recherche Biomédicale des Armées (Armed Forces Biomedical Research Institute). The project aims to respond to a request made by the Admiral Commander of the Oceanic and Strategic Forces following several incidents in which a failure to transmit information within the SSN’s Diving Safety team was identified as a causal factor.Domain. The Diving Safety team, which is located in the Operation and Navigation Department, is responsible for the driving and maintenance of the submarine’s technical safety. This team works closely with other teams, mainly through verbal communication (face-to-face and remote). An initial analysis of their activities identified the team leader as a key element in the transmission of information between the command post and the members of the Diving Safety team, as this person has direct control of the process. The latter requires developing situation awareness (SA) that meets the objectives set by the command post and the constraints faced by his teammates. The research program described in this thesis focuses on the role of the team leader on mechanisms for developing collective SA when managing a dynamic and risky situation.Method. Our observations were made with 15 teams of 6 submariners, during simulation exercises that are part of their assessed training that is held prior to mission departure. These situations are highly time-constrained and are punctuated by several problem-solving phases. The method that we implemented to study the development of collective SA is based on the characterization of verbal interactions.Problem statement. We argue that collective SA emerges from the information shared within the team. Since the team leader is central in this network, the characterization of the information he exchanges with his teammates makes it possible to report on the dynamics of the development of the collective SA.Empirical studies. The first part of the thesis consists in the analysis of activity during an interesting episode from the point of view of developing SA, with alternating driving and problem-solving phases. This study allowed us to identify the dynamics of the tasks performed, and to establish two performance criteria, one for driving and one for problem solving. The second part aims to characterize communication flows based on a method derived from the social networks analysis. The objective is to study the impact of operators’ experience on the structure of verbal communication, on the one hand, and the links between the network structure and performance (driving and problem solving), on the other. The third part aims to identify in verbal communication the cognitive processes and objects involved in developing collective SA. The objective is to analyse the impact of operators’ experience on the content of verbal communication, on the one hand, and the links between the content of verbal communication and performance on the other. The originality of this thesis lies, in part, in this articulation of methods for analysing the structure and content of verbal communication, in close connection with the activity, in order to understand how collective SA develops in a dynamic and risky situation

Full textThe aim of this study is to gain an understanding how the principals choose to develop teacher competence in experience-based teaching. I seek patterns in the different interview answers based on phenomenographic approach. My empirical data was collected with the help of computer-aided mail interviews. The results of the study have given answers to the questions on which the study is based upon and the results show a great variation. Variation in the interpretation of the concept of experience-based teaching and the governance document. But the results also vary regarding the skills development the principals offers teachers. Due to the variations that seem to prevail in all statements, it may be relevant to emphasize the importance of centralized interpretation of key concepts at the national level, in order to get as close to equivalent teaching as possible.

Full textPurpose: The purpose of the report was to achieve a greater understanding over which factors have an impact on capacity planning as well as the methods available regarding capacity planning. Along this, three questions were formulated that the study intends to answer: Which methods within capacity planning can be applied in a customer-managed company? What distinguishes a capacity planning in a customer-managed company? How can capacity planning be improved in the business case based on the current situation? Method: In order to answer the questions and fulfil the purpose of the study, it was decided to conduct a case study at Lindab Götene AB in Götene. The first question is answered by identifying relevant theory about capacity planning and comparing them with empiric materials. The second question is answered with the help of the empirics where a current situation analysis has been conducted that gives an insight into the case company and the information on how capacity planning is applied in the case study. The theoretical and empirical material are analysed as well. The third question is answered on the basis from the analysis and collection of empirical material in the current situation description to identify what can be improved regarding capacity planning in a customer-ordered business. The empirical data consisted of interviews, documentary studies and observations. Conclusion: Today the capacity plan is created for the whole company as one unit, the authors are suggesting that the business case applies the method capacity bills which makes it possible to plan capacity for each division. Thus, creating a better chance of understanding the current situation in the production. Further recommendations are such as conducting time studies to ensure that correct operational times are available which capacity planning is based on, this for not under- or overestimate the need of capacity. Follow-up and feedback should be done to see how the current situation of the production is against the production plan, also to create a ground for potential improvements that can occur. Creating routines and making sure that they are followed.

ABSTRACT: This work shows the results of environmental radioactivity monitoring of polonium (210Po), radioactive lead (210Pb), radioactive potassium (40K) – radionuclides of natural origin – and radioactive cesium (137Cs) – radionuclide of artificial origin. Measurements were made during 4 months (from January till April 2006), on the Atlantic horsemackerel (Trachurus trachurus), the sardine (Sardina pilchardus), the small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula), the Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and the pouting (Trisopterus luscus). Samples analysed include muscle tissue, liver and gonad of all fish species mentioned above, from captures in the North-East Atlantic off Peniche. 210Po concentration in tissue samples was always higher than concentrations of other radionuclides. Furthermore, 210Po accumulates more in the fish viscera, specially in the liver. Taking into account the annual consumption rates of these species, and its role in Portuguese diet, the radiation dose to consumers through ingestion of those radionuclides was computed. It is concluded that the main contribution for the absorbed radiation dose to consumers is due to 210Po and the radiation dose for 137Cs is comparatively small. At the present, there is no significant ionising radiation exposure risk to the Portuguese population through consumption of fish products.

It allows employees to face the social risk of skills' obsolescence but also to secure their professional path. In 1973, the legislator created an artificial link between vocational training and labour law by codifying this field into the Labour Code. Labour Law exercised a constant influence on vocational training which was primarily based on the sole needs of employees. The reform of 5th March 2014 and the subsequent laws seem to have the will to break with this artificial legal framework. The legislator intends to create a system of social insurance which is universal, personal and individual. It raises the question of a potential right to vocational training and calls for a global reform of its functioning

After the economic crises the world is experiencing a huge change which will lead to a new economic model. Now in the transition, our society is trying to design a new model in which the management of the resources will be understood in a different way. The crash in 2007 was the beginning of the change. We need to consider ourselves intellectually very lucky, because now we are able to understand how a new model is being shaped. After reading this thesis you are going to be able to identify some of the changes we as society are experimenting, how are we trying to design this new paradigm and how new companies are trying to manage the resources differently from before. Furthering more, and entering in detail, you will understand the role of shared economies in the freelancing field and its contribution to the fight for unemployment, one of the most harmful macroeconomic indicators in the world right now. A comparison in between the main market leaders in this aspect will allow the reader to know which characteristics contribute to the unemployment fight.

This study is experimented in the native-tree garden of Huisun Experimental Forest in Guoshing in Nantou County. The weather type of this area is warm heavy-humid type with average temperature 21℃ and average relative humidity 80%. We select ten dominant tree species to measure their leaf photosynthesis and transpiration. Four of them were chosen to probe into the relationships among photosynthetic gas exchange rate and measured meteorological factors. Results were summarized as follows: 1.Formosan Ash had the highest net photosynthetic rate in ten tested species and Ring-cupped Oak was the lowest. Net photosynthetic rates of Laurel family species were higher than those of Beech family species. Leaf conductance and transpiration rate showed the same results. The seasonal variation of the photosynthetic rate for the species of Nanto Actinodaphne and Incense Nanmu were lowest, but that for the species of Formosan Apple, Chinese Cork Oak and Formosan Nato Tree were highest. The seasonal variations of water use efficiency (WUE) for ten tested plants were low. The WUE of Laurel family species were higher than that of Beech family species. 2.In the analysis of the relationships among photosynthetic gas exchange rate, the VPD had negative significant correlation with net photo-synthetic rate and leaf conductance. The VPD had positive significant correlation with transpiration rate. The PPFD and leaf temperature had low correlation with net photosynthetic rate and leaf conductance but positive significant correlation with transpiration rate. 3.In the analysis of the relationships among net photosynthetic rate and stomatal respondence, the net photosynthetic rate increase with leaf conductance and showed positive significant correlation. The leaf conductance had positive significant correlation with non-stomatal factor (Ci/Ca) besides Incense Nanmu. The effect between net photosynthetic rate and stomatal factor was small. 4.The leaf number and net photosynthetic had low correlation among the tested plants except Nanto Actinodaphne. The SPAD and net photo-synthetic also had low correlation among all the tested plants.

Full textThe present dissertation arose from the need for clarification regarding the legal regime applicable to local housing, namely its controversial tax regime and the legal consequences of its inclusion in the Portuguese ordering. It is intended, at first, to clarify the origin of this lodging phenomenon. Secondly, due to the constant comparison between the taxation of local housing income and urban lease income, there is a global trend that has created a sense of injustice and inequality, thus creating the need for the need for further study on this subject, urging a distinctive conceptualization between the two regimes and concepts. It should also be pointed out the problem of taxing the capital gains generated by the allocation and disinfection of real estate from private to corporate assets and vice versa. Lastly, along with the characterization of the Portuguese tax system, its characteristics, advantages and shortcomings, it is intended to achieve an exegesis of the law, clear enough that those who practice this type of activity can do so in the most favorable tax options in casu.
Estrela, Paulo Jorge Rodrigues. Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10316/85804.

Preemptive right is a legal figure with deep roots in the Portuguese legal system. Just as it happened in other juridical domains, the preemptive right was also preserved by the legislator in terms of leases. It’s the article 1091.º/1-a) of the Portuguese Civil Code that grants to the lessee the ability to exercise the preemptive right regarding the rented premises, even when it’s the object of an onerous transfer. Therefore, every time that exists the intention to proceed to a transfer of the property to a third party the landlord must give priority to the tenant if he shows interest in doing business. It has been discussed if the lessee of the part of the building not subject to horizontal property will have the opportunity to exercise the preemptive right in the total acquisition of the building, once he will never be able to do it in relation to the part that concerns him, because it’s not legally autonomous. The current law makes it hard to recognize the preemptive right to the tenants although it’s not impossible.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
