Abstract:
The paper bringing about the certain changes, which were implies in Asian countries during the 18th century, when most part of these countries comes under British impact. Considering India only, the changes were not focusing only on the architectural style, but it was the entire process to structure the society in a better way. Britishers, by nature were very fond of recreation, entertainment, luxury in their life. Sports was one of the medium of their entertainment through which they interact among high societies. When cricket was introduced in India by Britishers, it was become most popular game among all the states. Maharajas of princely states were always try to copy the British life style, so they adopted cricket also with full obsession. Maharajas of Patiala, princely state Punjab along with their royal families, were in passionate lead to support Cricket as major sport (Majumdar, B. 2008). They had taken cricket to utmost priority and formed their own cricket grounds in Chail and Patiala. Maharaja Rajinder Singh, constructed a cricket ground and pavilion in 1890 in Patiala named as ‘Dhruve Pandove Stadium’ from where he initiated the cricket patronage (Sarkar, A. 2016). The pavilion is constructed in colonial style, which has given India a number of leading crickets, is still intact in good and working condition.

Abstract:
The Cooch Behar State was a small princely State of undivided Bengal during British rule. We know the State became a tributary State of the British East India Company in 1773 A.D. From this time the British ideology introduced in all aspects of the State by the Cooch Behar Maharajas. During the period of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan, who was known the modernizer of the Cooch Behar State, the British ideology had touched the highest stage of modernity during his time. During his time State introduced the First scientific land revenue management, Budget System and other developmental works. This had portrayed him as the modern Maharaja of the State or light side of the State. But this new land revenue management had sharp impact on the State environment and ecology and land-based society. This could portray him as destroyer of State environment and society.

Abstract:
EventDuring the spring, summer and autumn of 1947 India's richest province, the Punjab, played host to a massive human catastrophe. The trigger for the catastrophe was Britain's parting gift to its Indian subjects of partition. Confronted by a seemingly intractable demand by the All-India Muslim League for a separate Muslim homeland—Pakistan—a campaign which since 1946 had turned increasingly violent, the British government early in 1947 accepted viceroy Lord Mountbatten's advice that partition was necessary to arrest the country's descent into civil war. ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi notably excepted, the leadership of the Congress party came gradually and reluctantly to the same conclusion. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru's deputy, likened it to the cutting off of a diseased limb. But in accepting the ‘logic’ of the League's ‘two-nation’ theory, the British applied it remorselessly. They insisted that partition would have to follow the lines of religious affiliation, not the boundaries of provinces. In 1947 League president Muhammad Ali Jinnah was forced to accept what he had contemptuously dismissed in 1944 as a ‘moth-eaten’ Pakistan, a Pakistan bereft of something like half of Bengal and the Punjab and most of Assam.

Wyma, Kathleen Lynne. "The discourse and practice of radicalism in contemporary Indian art 1960-1990." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2833.

Full text
Abstract:
By the early 1980s the Department of Fine Arts and Aesthetics at the Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda stood as the key institution for contemporary art in India. Its reputation had been carefully cultivated over the last fifteen years by both K. G. Subramanyan and Geeta Kapur. Under their careful artistic and theoretical tutelage, the Facuhy of Fine Arts turned to narrative-figuration as a self-proclaimed polemical stance against the materialist/determinist thrust of history. The narrative turn moved beyond the regional locality of Baroda in 1981 with the exhibition Place for People. Held in the cosmopolitan art centres of Delhi and Bombay the show included the work of six artists variously affiliated with the school in Baroda: Bhupen Khakhar, Vivan Sundaram, Gulammohammed Sheikh, Nalini Malani, Jogen Chowdhury, and Sudhir Patwardhan. The arrival of Place for People in the 1980s must be situated within the larger frames of contemporary art in the post-colonial moment. In attending to the variegated terrain spanning both theory and practice, my project has as its underlying concern the interface between discursive formations, institutional structures, and sites of artistic intervention. More specifically, I am interested the representational strategies that emerged in the period between 1960 and 1990. In looking to the gaps in the discourse, alongside the points of conflict or conciliation, I raise larger questions about the politics of representation, and the productive or prohibitive possibilities of artistic intervention. At the core of my argument is the rise of painterly narrative-figuration exemplified by Place for People and the challenge leveled against it by the Indian Radical Painters and Sculptors Association. Both laid claim to radicalism as a polemical gesture; however, the battle was waged across the historically contingent fields of artistic subjectivity, regional difference and the capacity of art to function as an agent of social change. Pivotal to my study is how certain approaches to both the theory and practice of contemporary art in India have emerged as paradigmatic while others have gathered the dust of disregard.

Maharajh, Veeran. "The impact of real-time performance measurement on operations improvement / V. Maharajh." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8769.

Full text
Abstract:
The Industrial Revolution triggered the need for performance measurement and improvement initiatives and since then efforts to measure performance and improve manufacturing operations has gained considerable attention. The current globalised marketplace has placed increasing pressure on businesses to improve performance to gain a competitive advantage. The advances in information technology has now made the collection and transformation of raw data into usable information a simple automated process, which can be done in time with the manufacturing process, i.e. in real-time. The focus of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an implemented real-time performance measurement system in enabling operations improvement within a business unit of a South African petrochemical company. A comprehensive literature study was conducted where the topics of performance measurement, real-time performance measurement and operational improvement were discussed in detail. The broad nature of operations improvement was narrowed to meet the specific key operational focus areas of the business unit under investigation. The majority of the literature review was focused on unearthing key factors that contribute to the success of traditional and real-time performance measurement systems. An empirical study was conducted using a newly designed questionnaire that was based on the success factors identified in the literature review. The target population was the production, technical and operations management personnel of the various production plants within the business unit. The questionnaire tested the extent to which these employees perceive the success factors to be present in the real-time system and contribute towards operations improvement. The analysis of the collected data included descriptive statistics, to determine extent to which each of the factors where prevalent; analysis of variance models, to determine if the difference in perceptions of selected demographic groups regarding the success factors were statistically and practically significant; and correlation calculations, to determine the significance and strength of the relationship between selected success factors. Analysis of the collected data showed that the questionnaire was reliable and valid. Overall, it was concluded that respondents indicated there is good agreement that all success factors are present and hence that the real-time system is an effective tool in enabling operations improvement. The analysis showed that the highest ranked success factors were Awareness, Effectiveness of System in Improving Operations, Alignment with Strategy and Clear Visibility of Performance Metrics. The lowest ranked factors were Right Performance Metrics are being Measured, Review of Performance Measurement System and lastly Limited Number of Critical Performance Metrics. Furthermore, the analysis showed that, although employees perceive the real-time system to enable improvement in all operational focus areas, they perceive it to better enable improvement in operational efficiency, followed by improvement in full order on time and lastly improvement in variable cost. No notable statistically and practically significant differences in perceptions were found to exist among the selected demographic variables. The results of the correlation analysis showed the all factors except Limited Number of Critical Performance Metrics have a significant relationship with the effectiveness and use of the real-time system. It was concluded that the factors Effectiveness of System in Improving Operations and Use of System are strongly correlated with each other as well as with the factors Focus on Improvement, Facilitates Decision-Making, Stimulate Action and Clearly Defined Performance Metrics and Targets. Recommendations that were derived from the conclusions were presented, which suggests practical ways to improve the real-time system. The research study was evaluated against the primary and secondary objectives with the conclusion that both were achieved. Finally, suggestions for further research on this topic were proposed.

Abstract:

Maharaj, Suraksha. "A framework for building confidence in nuclear power for the labour union environment of South Africa / S. Maharaj." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4875.

Full text
Abstract:
The intention of this research was to uncover the reasons for the perceived lack of confidence in nuclear power by the labour unions, and hence to propose a framework for building the unions’ confidence in nuclear energy. A literature review of the views of labour unions, globally, on nuclear power was conducted. This provided the insight to design the experiment for this study. The literature review revealed that there were five major reasons causing labour unions to oppose nuclear power: environmental impact, safety, cost, political influence and job creation. The research was then categorized on the basis of these reasons. The labour unions selected for this research were Solidarity, Confederation of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Questions were prepared on each of the five categories and in–depth interviews were telephonically conducted. The responses to these interviews were analyzed to establish the best way forward for building greater labour union confidence in the nuclear industry in South Africa. The results of the interviews showed that Solidarity was in favour of nuclear power, while COSATU and NUM were against it for the following reasons: 1. They believed that the industry would not create a significant number of jobs, and may even lead to job losses. 2. They had the perception that the nuclear industry was dominated by white people and that the expansion of the industry would ultimately result in the creation of White jobs at the expense of Black jobs. 3. They were of the opinion that the nuclear industry harbored certain secrets which resulted in their distrust of it. These findings were then used to develop recommendations for building the confidence of the unions in nuclear power.
