Abstract. A complete theory of low-frequency MHD oscillations of the Earth's weakly ionized ionosphere is formulated. Peculiarities of excitation and propagation of electromagnetic acoustic-gravity, MHD and planetary waves are considered in the Earth's ionosphere. The general dispersion equation is derived for the magneto-acoustic, magneto-gravity and electromagnetic planetary waves in the ionospheric E- and F-regions. The action of the geomagnetic field on the propagation of acoustic-gravity waves is elucidated. The nature of the existence of the comparatively new large-scale electromagnetic planetary branches is emphasized.

Abstract. We present observational evidence for the presence of MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) waves in the solar photosphere deduced from SOHO/MDI (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory/Michelson Doppler Imager) Dopplergram velocity observations. The magneto-acoustic perturbations are observed as acoustic power enhancement in the sunspot umbra at high-frequency bands in the velocity component perpendicular to the magnetic field. We use numerical modelling of wave propagation through localised non-uniform magnetic field concentration along with the same filtering procedure as applied to the observations to identify the observed waves. Guided by the results of the numerical simulations we classify the observed oscillations as magneto-acoustic waves excited by the trapped sub-photospheric acoustic waves. We consider the potential application of the presented method as a diagnostic tool for magnetohelioseismology.

Abstract:
In the developing field of spin wave-based information technology, this work investigates the possibility to use surface acoustic waves (SAW) to excite spin-waves in ferromagnetic thin layers relying on the magnetoelastic coupling. This would provide a non-inductive, efficient, and remote addressing of spin waves. In the first project we develop an experimental setup to generate electrically excited SAWs phase-locked to probe laser pulses. The magnetization dynamics is detected by an optical bridge using magneto-optical effects (Kerr and Voigt). We investigate the resonant magneto-elastic coupling in a thin film of the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. To reach resonant coupling, the spin-wave frequency is scanned across the SAW frequency using a magnetic field. We disentangle the photoelastic contribution from the magneto-optical one, from which we obtain the amplitude of magnetization precession. We show that it is driven solely by the acoustic wave. Its field dependence is shown to agree well with theoretical calculations. Its amplitude resonates at the same field as the resonant attenuation of the acoustic wave, clearly evidencing the magnetoacoustic resonance with high sensitivity. The influence of temperature, SAW frequency and power on the coupling efficiency are studied. In the second project we use SAWs thermoelastically excited by a tightly focused laser beam on ferromagnetic metals (Ni, FeGa, Co) on a transparent substrate (glass, sapphire). Spatio-temporal maps of the surface displacement and magneto-optical signal are obtained. A high-frequency shift of the frequency spectrum of the latter gives a hint for spin-wave excitation by SAWs

Abstract:
Barkhausen emission (B.E.) and Magneto-acoustic emission (M.A.E.) can be detected from specimens in a magnetic field varying at a few millihertz. Comparison of the two signals can indicate the nature of the domain walls responsible for the activity at any particular field. In order to characterize a specimen the strength of the emissions around the hysteresis loop are measured together with the distribution of Barkhausen event sizes. This technique has been used to measure the effects of: (A) Microstructure. Both B.E. and M.A.E. are sensitive to dislocations, and the effects of cold-working and its removal by isochronal annealing has been studied in alpha-iron. A simple model of domain wall pinning is presented which enables the dislocation density to be estimated. M.A.E. and B.E. are also sensitive to the growth of precipitates in Incoloy 904 alloy and, for a certain regime of sizes, can potentially be used to monitor the precipitate diameter. B.E. is sensitive to smaller precipitates (-100 nm) than M.A.E. but, unlike M.A.E., its dependence on precipitate size is not monotonic. An understanding of the signal dependence is obtained from Lorentz microscopy. (B) Radiation damage. The sensitivity of B.E. and M.A.E. to radiation damage is quite small by virtue of the small size of defects present. Nevertheless measurements on neutron irradiated alpha-iron specimens in several microstructural states indicate: (a) an accelerated recovery from the cold-worked condition on isochronal annealing and (b) dissolution of nitrides and carbides which formed in preparatory heat treatments. Measurements on a neutron irradiated iron-copper alloy which was subsequently isochronally annealed indicated effects which were consistent with: (a) removal of dislocation loops formed during irradiation at 550°C and (b) growth of precipitates (probably copper) at 600°C which presumably formed during the irradiation, (i.e. the effect was smaller in unirradiated control specimens). These results suggest that B.E. and M.A.E. might be useful tools for the characterization of radiation effects. (C) Tensile stress. Both B.E. and M.A.E. are sensitive to applied tensile stress and measurements on a number of different materials indicate that the dependence of M.A.E. is monotonic (except in nickel) whereas that of B.E. is generally quite complex. Since the microstructural and stress dependences are often interrelated it would be difficult to use the technique to measure say residual stress in a practical material unless the exact condition of the microstructure could be determined. Consequently B.E. and M.A.E. were measured from mild steel specimens (4360 steel) which had recieved a number of different heat treatments. The effects of applied tensile stress on the amplitude and shape of the B.E. and M.A.E. profiles were investigated with a view to be able to use the M.A.E. to measure stresses without prior knowledge of the microstructure. It was found that certain parameters in the signal profile were much more strongly dependent upon the stress than on the microstructure for many of the material conditions. Therefore M.A.E. is potentially useful for residual stress measurements.

Abstract:
We present a three-dimensional analysis of magneto-acoustic waves, along the seven coronal loops, observed on the active region NOAA 11272 during the class B and C flares. We found 19-, 9-, 5-, 2-, 1-, and 0.6-minute waves using the pixelised wavelet filtering method over images obtained from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly instrument. We modelled the velocity of these waves along the extrapolated magnetic field lines that reproduce the observed loops in extreme ultraviolet. The extrapolation was made over magnetograms, got from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager instrument, using the linear force-free approximation. From our model, we found temperatures 10$^{3}$ (maior equivalente) T (menor equivalente) 1.8 x 10$^{7}$ K and densities 10$^{7}$ (maior equivalente) n (menor equivalente) 10$^{17}$ cm$^{−3}$, covering from photosphere to corona, as expected in the solar atmosphere. Hence, we obtained acoustic c$_{s}$ $\approx$ 10$^{2}$ km s$^{−1}$ and Alfvénic $\upsilon$$_{A}$ $\approx$ 10$^{4}$ km s$^{−1}$ velocities values which are in agreement with the literature. In addition, the brightness asymmetry observed along the coronal loops is explained by the magnetic field and Alfvén velocity distributions along the extrapolated field lines. We found fast magneto-acoustic waves at the beginning of B3.8 and C1.9 flares and slow modes along the loops during all flares. Our 3D model represents an unprecedented method to study waves in coronal loops. All results are coherent with expected values in the solar atmosphere conditions.

Abstract:
Mechanical waves are ubiquitous within solar plasmas, coming in the form of Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. The Sun and its atmosphere are not a single homogeneous medium and, rather, have complex structures stratified by gravity, temperature gradients, complex magnetic field structures, subject to bulk flows and even partial ionisation, with all of these affecting how oscillations propagate within the plasma. Magneto-acoustic gravity (MAG) waves have been investigated extensively within solar physics, with three popular choices of analytical modelling for a Cartesian coordinate system: a magnetic field parallel, perpendicular, or at an angle to the gravitational field. Firstly we study the eigen-modes of bounded solar plasmas embedded in a magnetic field perpendicular to the gravitational field and their energy distribution in both single and two-layer models. We show that, indeed, modes can still be split into fast and slow MAG with stratification decreasing the magnetic energy with height and, thus, only waves with predominantly internal energy are more evenly distributed in the atmosphere. A discontinuity in temperature between layers also reflects waves but we show there is an inherent coupling between waves in both layers. Secondly we investigate the effect of a bulk flow on MAG surface waves, with the magnetic field parallel to the surface and a gravitational field perpendicular to this. We find that waves along the penumbra, where Evershed flows are present can change their direction of propagation and even the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability can occur. Waves within solar plasmas have generally been studied in fully ionised or completely neutral media extensively and, as such, partial ionisation has not been covered much until fairly recently, meaning there is great scope for exciting studies in this sub-set of solar physics. Using single and multi-fluid methods we investigate the stability of partially ionised plasma slabs with bulk flows. We find that in the single fluid approximation that dissipative instabilities can occur for flow speeds of the internal tube speed, with a neutrals providing stability. In the two-fluid approximation our analysis confirms the existence of a mode that arises due to the shear in flow in the neutral fluid and that, in a highly collisional plasma, has a semi-resonant interaction between itself and the classical modes of incompressible or compressible magnetic slabs.

Abstract:
With the advent of femtosecond lasers it became possible to measure how femtosecond optical demagnetization can probe the exchange interaction in ferromagnetic metals. Laser-induced demagnetization of materials with strong magneto-elastic coupling should lead to the release of its build-in strains, thus to the generation of both longitudinal (L) and shear (S) acoustic waves. In this thesis, generation of shear picosecond acoustic pulses in strongly magnetostrictive materials such as Terfenol is processed analytically and shown experimentally. In case of Terfenol with strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy, laser induced demagnetostriction is responsible for S excitation. First, the phenomenological model of direct magnetostriction in a Terfenol monocrystalline film is developed. The shear strain generation efficiency strongly depends on the orientation of the film magnetization. Time-resolved linear MOKE pump-probe experiments show that transient laser-induced release of the magnetoelastic strains lead to the excitation of GHz L and S acoustic waves. These results are the first experimental observation of picosecond shear acoustic wave excitation by laser-induced demagnetostriction mechanism. Second, the interaction of an optically generated L acoustic pulse with the magnetization of a Terfenol thin film is reported. Arrival of the picosecond strain wave alters a change of its magnetization and leads to acoustic mode conversion, which is another pathway of shear acoustic wave generation. The frequency bandwidth of the generated acoustic pulses matches the demagnetization timescale and lies in the range of several hundreds of GHz, close to 1 THz

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Crystals are sometimes called 'Flowers of the Mineral Kingdom'. In addition to their great beauty, crystals and other textured materials are enormously useful in electronics, optics, acoustics and many other engineering applications. This richly illustrated text describes the underlying principles of crystal physics and chemistry, covering a wide range of topics and illustrating numerous applications in many fields of engineering using the most important materials today. Tensors, matrices, symmetry and structure-property relationships form the main subjects of the book. While tensors and matrices provide the mathematical framework for understanding anisotropy, on which the physical and chemical properties of crystals and textured materials often depend, atomistic arguments are also needed to quantify the property coefficients in various directions. The atomistic arguments are partly based on symmetry and partly on the basic physics and chemistry of materials. After introducing the point groups appropriate for single crystals, textured materials and ordered magnetic structures, the directional properties of many different materials are described: linear and nonlinear elasticity, piezoelectricity and electrostriction, magnetic phenomena, diffusion and other transport properties, and both primary and secondary ferroic behavior. With crystal optics (its roots in classical mineralogy) having become an important component of the information age, nonlinear optics is described along with the piexo-optics, magneto-optics, and analogous linear and nonlinear acoustic wave phenomena. Enantiomorphism, optical activity, and chemical anisotropy are discussed in the final chapters of the book.
