Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe purpose of this research is to analyze the characteristics of magic realism contained in Jastni Matlani’s short stories Laron (2010). In the works of magic realism, there widely exists unreasonable magical and strange elements, which are generally recognized as ‘Irreducible Elements’. Though the collection includes 30 short stories in total, this research will only focus on examining five stories, to be specific, that is short stories Laron, Di Bawah Pohon Angsana, Dua Helai Daun, Kisah di Sebuah Taman and Perempuan Berbau Harum. This study is focused on the ‘Irreducible Elements’ of magic realism as highlighted by Wendy B. Faris in Ordinary Enchantments Magical Realism and Demystification of Narratives. ‘Irreducible Element’ refers to the unexplainable things in terms of the natural law of logic, common knowledge or beliefs that exist. Hence, to analyze the selected stories that contain unexplained elements, this research will concentrate on two major elements. Firstly, the magical objects that include sounds, objects and places and secondly, the description of the characters in the work by looking at how magic characters are developed in the realm of reality. Ultimately, the findings of this research prove that Jasni Matlani’s short stories correspond to the concept of irreducible elements, therefore, can be categorized as works of magic realism.

Abstract:
An investigation into the nature of the artist in The long silence of Mario Salviati within the context of magic realism This article investigates the nature of the artist in “The long silence of Mario Salviati” (2000) within the context of magic realism. This novel by Etienne van Heerden is particularly interesting as the theme of art is directly intertwined with magic realism. The specific relationship between artistry and magic realism in “The long silence of Mario Salviati” has not been the focus of any particular study yet. Several artists in the novel will be analysed within the context of magic realism and according to magic realist characteristics to give an integrated perspective on style and theme. This investigation largely conjoins with the viewpoints of Faris (1995), although perspectives from other theorists are also taken as a point of departure. Some important characteristics of magic realist texts which are discussed within the context of artistry in “The long silence of Mario Salviati” are inter alia the co-existence of two worlds, doubts from the reader concerning the interpretation of events as realist or magical, the questioning of conventional ideas about time, space and identity, the anti-bureaucratic viewpoint and the focus on collective rather than individual memory.

Abstract:
Abstract Magical realism, which combines reality and fantasy, has become a trend in the world of literature, sparking a new way of thinking while producing a literary work. Studies on magical realism in literature are crucial as they could reflect the cultural and societal norms of the society featured. This article utilised the theory of magical realism by Faris (2004) to discuss the aspect of magical realism presented in the novel “Cebisan Mantera Terakhir” (2013) by Hasanuddin Md. Isa and published by the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM). The genre of the novel is classified as mystery or mysticism in the setting of a supernatural world where shamans practise “santau” (a type of black magic) in the Malay community. This qualitative study aims to identify and analyse the way the author depicts magical realism through content analysis of the text. Findings showed that the magic element in the form of “santau” was evident in the Malay community featured in the novel. The application of Faris‟s principles showed the clear connection between reality and the magical elements of “santau” which can be categorised into particular aspects of the text, such as objects, events, characters, beliefs and texts. Religion and beliefs are also inseparable from the Malay community, a factor portrayed as a connection between reality and the supernatural worlds. Keywords: magical realism, novel, Cebisan Mantera Terakhir, shaman, santau, black magic Abstrak Kemunculan aliran realisme magis dilihat melalui gabungan antara dua dunia, iaitu dunia nyata dan dunia fantasi yang membawa pemikiran baru dalam karya sastera. Abstract This article raises the question of how contemporary multicultural authors and film directors build upon the magic-realist convention, with its specific narra-tive-discourse configurations (the way the story is told) to allow their audience access to foreign, often bizarre worlds. The first section of the analysis deals with understanding the precise structural configurations that make a text work as magic realism and explores variations that complicate the schemata. The second section relies on the first section's discussion of magic-realist codes to look closely at Julie Dash's film Daughters of the Dust , a text type that utilizes its visual and auditory tracks to work as magic realism. Magic realism in Jack Hodgins’s Short Stories. After tracing the development of magic realism and attempting to bring out its main features the author shows that Canadian magic realism combines elements of the two main orientations found elsewhere - fabulation and the marvellous - with a strong visual element borrowed from the school of painting of the same name. She then proceeds to analyse the magic realist elements in Jack Hodgins and more particularly in three of his stories, «Separating », «Spit Delaney’s Island », and «The Plague Children ».

AbstractMagical realism is a literary work that blurs the boundaries between reason and beyond reason. This flow is inseparable from Indonesian society with their respective beliefs related to magic/mystics, which are elements of culture. This study was conducted to analyze and describe the elements of magical realism found in Idrus's drama Crimes of Revenge. The analysis of magical realism in the drama script is based on the markers of magical realism mapped by Wendy Bush Faris. The approach of this study is descriptive qualitative. The literature documentation technique is used as a data collection method. The analysis was carried out by observing notes, by reading the drama scripts and classifying the scripts based on the characteristics of magical realism. Idrus's manuscript of Evil Membas Revenge contains five magical realism markers: irreducible element, phenomenal world, unsettling doubt, merging realms, and identity disruption. This marker of magical realism can be seen through the dialogue and instructions for the behavior or actions of the characters. Based on this, the script for Crimes of Revenge by Idrus is classified as a drama script with elements of magical realism.

Kata kunci: mitos, narasi, realisme, magis, karakteristik AbstractThe impact of global literature of magical realism is found in Indonesia literature in both prose and poetry. Abstract:
Magic realism as a literary narrative mode has been used by different critics and writers in their fictional works. The majority of the magic realist narrative is set in a postcolonial context and written from the perspective of the politically oppressed group. Magic realism, by giving the marginalized and the oppressed a voice, allows them to tell their own story, to reinterpret the established version of history written from the dominant perspective and to create their own version of history. This innovative narrative mode in its opposition of the notion of absolute history emphasizes the possibility of simultaneous existence of many truths at the same time. In this paper, the researcher, in efforts to unfold conditions culturally marginalized, explores the relevance of alternative sense of reality to reinterpret the official version of colonial history in Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children from the perspective of magic realism. As a methodological approach to respond to the fiction text, magic realism endows reinterpretation and reconsideration of the official colonial history in reaffirmation of identity of the culturally marginalized people with diverse voices.

Abstract:
This comparative reading of contemporary Australasian and Canadian fiction privileges a reciprocal interaction between ecocriticism and magic realism within the field of postcolonial studies. My research shows that few works examine magic realism as a distinct aesthetic mode, while many ecocritical and postcolonial studies favour colonialist and pessimistic perspectives. Seeking to balance thematic and aesthetic concerns, my concepts of ecological magic realism and magic realist ecopoetics re-evaluate this still often misunderstood mode: its techniques in postcolonial narratives not only transcribe the cultural plight of the postcolonial subject, but also translate the missing ecological link between the environment and human beings. Informed by ecopoetic reflections on figurative language, Delbaere-Garant’s notion of mythic realism, and material ecocriticism, my concepts take the narrative and physical agency – or poiesis – of the non-human world as their focal point. Recognizing the dialogical web of human and non-human energies raises the issues of eco-imperialism as well as those of environmental and social justice. My thesis discusses two main configurations of ecological magic realism common to Anglo-Celtic and Indigenous texts within my corpus: synergy and crisis. These shifting interspecies relations are explored through the contexts of eco-spiritualities, scientific approaches to Nature, Nature writing, gothic-like metamorphoses, eco-apocalypse, and the Anthropocene. Rejecting dualistic worldviews, magic realism in these collaborative or competitive humans/Nature interactions remains ambivalent: on the one hand, it re-enacts human beings’ failed embeddedness in their non-human surroundings; on the other, it also re-opens the possibility of a mutually-enriching symbiosis.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is not the text contained in this book, but the four electroacoustic compositions presented: Go, Hendrix Haze, Triple Concerto and Toccata del Mago. The purpose of this writing is to put forward a context in which these four compositions may be assessed. In chapter 1, I choose to present my work taking a lateral approach. Rather than discuss my background as a composer and the reasons or 'necessity' for using the electroacoustic medium to express my musical thinking, I have instead introduced a new idea to provide a wider context: Magic Realism in music. I have developed the notion that there is a musical equivalent to Magic Realism in literature, and that my work, as well as the work of other Latin American composers, may be seen in this light. Also in this chapter, I put forward the idea that the electroacoustic medium may be the natural environment or 'habitat', as it were, for the Magic Realist composer to develop. Chapters 2 to 5 present a specific framework, that is, the aesthetic point of VIew and the technical means involved in the creation of each piece. In these chapters, the compositional process is presented, from the first, often abstract ideas that trigger the imagination of a composer, to the decision taken during the final production stage in the studio. It is hoped that this specific framework will convey the necessary Information required for a preliminary assessment of the music presented, in terms of the composer's aims and the results obtained. Yet, a piece of music can be a far more complex and richer phenomenon than the composer's aims and intentions, and it must be ultimately assessed in its own terms.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to illustrate the importance of magic realism in American women's fiction in the late twentieth century. The term magic realism, which has traditionally been associated with Latin American men's writing, has been known by different, and often contradictory, definitions. It may be argued that, properly defined, it can be a valid term to describe a number of characteristics common to a corpus of work, and can be considered as an aesthetic category different from others such as Surrealism or Fantastic literature, with which it has often been compared. Furthermore, magic realism has viability as a contemporary international mode and is particularly suitable to women writers from minority ethnic groups. The present study intends to draw relevant comparative analyses of uses of magic realism that show various formal and thematic interactions between separate literary traditions. The introduction offers an overview of the different conceptions and applications of the term since its origins within the area of painting, and suggests a working definition that can be effective for intensive textual analysis of several novels. In order to offer a new approach which can enable us to move away the paradigm of magic realism from Latin America towards a more multicultural framework, the focus will be on three geographical-cultural areas: African American, Native American and Chicano/Mexican writing. The implementation of magic realist strategies in African American writing will be examined in Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon (1977) and Gloria Naylor's Mama Day (1988), with a particular emphasis on the significance of African mythical background and the experience of dispossession and transference of culture. Magic realist elements in the novels Tracks (1988) by Louise Erdrich and Ceremony (1977) by Leslie Marmon Silko will be studied in the context of Native American oral tradition and cosmologies. The practice of magic realism on both sides of the U. S. - Mexico border will be explored in the novels So Far from God (1993), by the Chicana Ana Castillo, and Like Water for Chocolate (1989), by the Mexican Laura Esquivel. A description of the borderland culture in the American Southwest, as well as comparisons between North and Latin American uses of magic realism will be provided. Finally, some connections amongst the discussed literary traditions and further lines of research will be suggested.

Abstract:
[…]||Abstract: Magic realism has existed for years, but for some reason scholars have, to a certain extent, ignored it. Only a few people seem to think it is worthy of study. One proof of this is that, although the style exists in Québec literature, there is no equivalent to the expression "magic realism" in French. Novels written in the style in Québec have been studied from every angle except this one, as if scholars in Québec do not know the style even exists, or they do not want to recognise it. They most often refer to the magical elements of these novels as the characters' imagination at play and give them a meaning according to that role. In English-Canadian literature the style is recognised but has rarely been studied. Only a few people, mostly in Western Canada, seem to be interested in the matter. Geoff Hancock is probably the one who did the most in this field; he has published several articles, a collection of short stories, and participated in the conference on magic realism at the University of Waterloo in 1985.[...]

Abstract:
In this essay I examine the political implications of the shifts in definition of the term, "magic realism". Magic realism as it was originally employed in the Latin-American context signified a concept different to what it is currently held to suggest in metropolitan literary discourse. Magic realism in the first world has come to be regarded as a third world reflection of its own cultural dominant, postmodernism, without an acknowledgement of the alternative material realities which inform it. I investigate these ideas through an analysis of the work of two novelists, namely, the Colombian, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and the American, John Barth. In a well-known essay titled "The Literature of Replenishment", Barth names Garcia Marquez as the foremost postmodern writer. This is deceptive, I argue, since although in the essay Barth presents postmodernist fiction as a political advance on the earlier styles of realism and modernism, his own fictional practice contradicts his claim. While in the essay Barth presents postmodernism as politically significant by virtue of its "democratic impulse", his novel, Chimera, seeks to avoid the political through a flawed understanding of textuality. Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude stands in stark contrast with Chimera since it underscores the political consideration central to discourse through stressing the text's material, historical context. This distinction between the two novels is brought to light particularly through the incremental differences in their use of the techniques of "narrative circularity" and repetition. I argue, furthermore, that Garcia Marquez's emphasis on language as a material practice is, at least in part, owing to the specifics of the style of magic realism. While postmodernist fiction, one of the cultural effects of an advanced capitalism, may slide ineluctably into notions of pure textuality, magic realism, constituted as it is at the interface of pre-capitalist and capitalist modes of production, compels an acknowledgement of the material world.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We investigated the degradation in visual perception that can occur using augmented reality displays to interact with and interpret real-world reading and spatial response tasks. Background: Stereoscopic augmented reality displays can degrade a user’s visual perception. To distinguish the components of this degradation that result from hardware and software differences, an analysis of this visual degradation for contemporary augmented reality displays is necessary.Method: Participants performed real-world (i.e., not projected in augmented reality) eyechart tests of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity to characterize the degradation of static visual perception caused by each headset in the study (Microsoft HoloLens, Magic Leap One, and DAQRI Smart Glasses), and took a measure of useful field of view to characterize any potential degradation in spatial awareness. Results: From our analysis of user performance, we observed that unlike the headsets previously used for this type of characterization, the majority of contemporary augmented reality displays do not significantly degrade visual perception. However, we did observe slight decreases in visual performance introduced by the Magic Leap One.Conclusions: We defined a methodology to employ real-world measures of visual perception to rapidly characterize degradation of visual perception in augmented reality.Applications: This analysis can inform headset selection and visual stimulus design strategies based on operational requirements and inform future headset development efforts.
