Abstract:
The hot beverage commonly known as tea results from the infusion of dried leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze. Ranking second only to water for its consumption worldwide, it has always been appreciated since antiquity for its aroma, taste characteristics, and beneficial effects on human health. There are many different processed tea types, including green tea, a non-fermented tea which, due to oxidation prevention maintains the structure of the bioactive compounds, especially polyphenols; these bioactive compounds show a number of benefits for the human health. The main producers of tea are China and India, followed by Kenya, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Vietnam, however recently new countries are entering the market, with quality niche productions, among which also Italy. The present research aimed to assess the bioactive compounds (polyphenols) and the antioxidant activity of two green teas (the “Camellia d’Oro” tea—TCO, and the “Compagnia del Lago” tea—TCL) produced in Italy, in the Lake Maggiore district, where nurserymen have recently started to cultivate C. sinensis. In this area the cultivation of acidophilic plants as ornamentals has been known since around 1820. Due to the crisis of the floricultural sector, producers have been trying to diversify their product in order to increase their competitiveness, starting to cultivate Italian tea. Their antioxidant activity was assessed, finding a similar or higher antioxidant capacity than in other green teas, as reported in literature. TCO showed a higher antioxidant activity (42,758.86 mmol Fe2+ kg−1; 532.37 µmol TE g−1 DW; 881.08 µmol TE g−1 DW) and phenolic content (14,918.91 mg GAE 100 g−1 DW) than TCL (25,796.61 mmol Fe2+ kg−1; 302.35 µmol TE g−1 DW; 623.44 µmol TE g−1 DW; 8540.42 mg GAE 100 g−1 DW). Through HPLC, a total of thirteen phenolic compounds were identified quantitatively, including catechins, benzoic acids, cinnamic acids, and flavonols, in TCO while only 9 in TCL, and mainly in lower amounts. Albeit with differences, both teas were found to be of quality proving that Italy could have the possibility to grow profitably C. sinensis.

Abstract:
Abstract. Heavy precipitation on the south side of the central Alps produced a catastrophic flood in October 1868. We assess the damage and societal impacts, as well as the atmospheric and hydrological drivers using documentary evidence, observations and novel numerical weather and runoff simulations. The greatest damage was concentrated close to the Alpine divide and Lago Maggiore. An atmospheric reanalysis emphasizes the repeated occurrence of streamers of high potential vorticity as precursors of heavy precipitation. Dynamical downscaling indicates high freezing levels (4000 m a.s.l.), extreme precipitation rates (max. 270 mm 24 h−1) and weather dynamics that agree well with observed precipitation and damage, and with existing concepts of forced low-level convergence, mid-level uplift and iterative northeastward propagation of convective cells. Simulated and observed peak levels of Lago Maggiore differ by 2 m, possibly because the exact cross section of the lake outflow is unknown. The extreme response of Lago Maggiore cannot be attributed to low forest cover. Nevertheless, such a paradigm was adopted by policy makers following the 1868 flood, and used to implement nationwide afforestation policies and hydraulic structures. These findings illustrate the potential of high-resolution, hydrometeorological models – strongly supported by historical methods – to shed new light on weather events and their socio-economic implications in the 19th century.

Abstract:
Artificial Cs-137 has been introduced into the environment for more than half a century. Its first appearance in central European lake sediments corresponds to the nuclear weapons testing in the 1960s. The largest contamination of European lakes and rivers occurred as a consequence of the fallout after the Chernobyl accident in spring 1986. In this work the migration behaviour of artificial Cs-137 in Lago Maggiore and other pre-alpine lakes as a consequence of these fallouts was studied. Lago Maggiore is one of the largest drinking water reservoirs in the south of the Alps. After the Chernobyl accident roughly 20 kBq•m-2 of 137Cs were deposited onto the lake surface. From 2003 to 2005 bottom sediment cores and water samples were collected at 7 different locations of Lago Maggiore. Data on the 137Cs distribution in tributaries, lake water, suspended matter, bottom sediments, and the 137Cs association to different geochemical fractions are presented in this work. To model the run-off of 137Cs from the watershed into the lake a compartment model was used. For modeling the input of 137Cs into and the vertical distribution within the sediment a diffusion–convection type model was developed. This model takes into account the uptake of activity by sedimentation, fixation and redissolution, retarded diffusion, the influence of competing ions on the retarded diffusion within the sediments, and compaction of sediments. The results of the parameter optimization – mainly the sedimentation rate and the 137Cs distribution coefficient Kd, which determines the uptake of activity into the sediment – are discussed and compared with those of other European lakes characterized by similar 137Cs deposition levels but different limnological properties. To estimate the bioavailability of 137Cs, its activity concentrations in fish samples from Lago Maggiore were measured. Combining the existing data with our measurements, 137Cs fish–water concentration ratios were calculated and compared with those for other lakes which were affected by similar 137Cs contamination

Abstract:
We have widely discussed, in this written work, about different understanding points of Literature books for children, pointing out the influence of medieval imaginary in Angela Lago\'s masterpiece. In the book Charadas Macabras, we have elicited the presence of the Devil, by the transformation of his spoken words. The oral exercise, in the narrative Sua Alteza A Divinha, was focused under the lights of Bakhtin\'s concepts. The aspects of theses concepts took into consideration the amplifying of the comic and the children\'s entertainment points, which were encapsulated in the tale by the game, (the oral contest). All these points should be understood as a social anthitesis - the popular level put in front of the aristocracy, strong people against weak people - the feminine element against masculine element. All these factors contributed toward the dimensional views of the this book. In researching, \"the study of oral culture\" we discovered it contained espontaneous humor cause by the improvise performances, present in the public square. The public square was a popular place for people to hold their artistic performance. These aspects can be identified in the books Indo Não Sei Aonde Buscar Não Sei O Quê and 10 Adivinhas Picantes. Upon examining the \"tales of a princess\" we found they contain many expertly written riddles. This subject was widely studied by researchers like Adolpho Coelho and Câmara Cascudo, who also empathized the initial purpose of this project - the corroboration of the influence of medieval culture, by Portugal and Brazil, in Angela Lago\'s tales. In conclusion, we have taken the elements that belong to each narrative and inserted them into the sphere of the reader, and particulary, the child reader. The mind of child is known to be most criative and imaginative. It\'s a world where invention, dreams, magic, hapiness and sadness exists.

Para teorizar e historicizar essas categorias, recorro a alguns retóricos greco-latinos e renascentistas, a alguns ensaístas do século XX e a neurocientistas.
Abstract: The illustrated children¿s book is a ¿cultural object that blends visual and verbal codes¿ (LAJOLO, ZILBERMAN, 1984). To deal with this blend, five categories are suggested: 1) text support; 2) graphic enunciation; 3) visuality, i.e., mental imagery that the text elicit to the reader¿s mind¿s eye; 4) image, hence, illustration, as visual text; 5) dialogue between text and illustration. To theorize and historicize these categories, I discuss some Greek, Roman and Renaissance rhetoricians, some XX century essayists and some neuroscientists. I attempt to show the collaboration and usefulness of these categories, analyzing Cora Coralina¿s book O prato azul pombinho, with drawings by Angela Lago.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze how the theme of death is addressed in production for children and youth; for both our work proposes the reading of two works from different narrative fields: a book and a movie. To perform this exercise, we take for instrumental foundations of Literature Comparative Studies, interdisciplinary perspective that operates the comparison and dialogue that can be established between different literatures, literature and other arts and literature and other knowledge. The relationships established will be used between literature and other arts, such as cinema, to focus as death is being treated in literary and filmic narrative. So start from the concept of literature compared, intertextuality and dialogism, fundamental to establish comparative relations between the two narratives, demonstrating how the film\'s own resources as well as their interrelationship codes and languages, contribute to the construction of meaning. The theme has proved useful for research work, given that death is an ingredient of human life, so the corpus of choice promoted the study of the division into two phases: the presentation of death in Western culture and the representation of death in literary and filmic narratives for children and youth. The corpus of the research is composed of works from death! A pagan tale of Christian folklore (1992), children\'s book written by Angela Lago and The Corpse Bride (2005), a film produced by Tim Burton.

The present study aims to reflect about the narrative border in the works Shadow (2010), by the South Korean Suzy Lee, and O cântico dos cânticos (1992), by the Brazilian Angela Lago. Our main purpose is to contribute to studies on children’s literature’s theory and criticism, pointing out how the authors broaden up the interpretative potential for their picture-books, in its materiality and visuality, by exploring the use of the codex’s borders as structures for pictorial narratives. In addition to the theory focused on the specific critics of literature for children and young adults (Sarah Dowhower, Maria Nikolajeva, Sophie Van der Linden, Maria José Palo) and the studies on the book as an art form (Julio Plaza, Johanna Drucker, Maria do Carmo de Freitas Veneroso, Paulo Silveira), bibliographies on the concepts of the binding fold dialectics (Michel Melot) and the threshold (Walter Benjamin, Jeanne Marie Gagnebin, Georges Didi-Huberman) are also mobilized. This passage from literary criticism to the artistic philosophy about the book as an object, culminating in the interdisciplinarity of literature and art criticism, aims to re-present and re-know this artistic phenomenon, the picture-book, in the potential of its hybridity, occupying a threshold space between artist’s books and children’s books

Abstract:
The purpose of the present study is to analyse the work of Angela Lago, book writer and children\'s books illustrator, based on a selection of books that have haunting and death as common themes, namely: De Morte! (1992), Charadas Macabras (1994), Sete Histórias para Sacudir o Esqueleto (2002) and Minhas Assombrações (2009). Considered one of the biggest names in contemporary juvenile and children\'s literature, Angela Lago has provided readers, for over three decades, with exciting books, many of which have been the object of research in the academic field. While analysing some master\'s and doctorate\'s dissertations, we realized the possibility of investigating her work under different theoretical perspectives. Among the possible biases, our approach contemplated the theoretical concepts developed by Mikhail Bakhtin, already cited in other works, and the study of the oral tradition and written culture, proposed by Walter Ong and Eric Havelock. The concepts of multilingualism, dialogism and the aesthetic of the grotesque, discussed by Bakhtin, as well as characteristics of the oral tradition, the advent of writing and the press, presented especially by Ong, reverberate through her works. By interchanging these theories, we attempted to demonstrate how the artist proposes the gradual processing of the reader/author interaction in the selected corpus, going from laughter to haunting, from the invitation of the act of storytelling to introducing the reader as a character in the story. Starting with the comparative study of the selected books, we observed similarities among the aesthetic projects, which led us to group them into two categories: works in which the author gets together with the reader, inviting him/her to convey the stories; works in which the author and the reader become characters themselves, allowing new ways of participation.

This research purposes to study the matrices of the popular story in children literature, showing how the narrative of Angela Lago is based on a multiple reading of the verbal and visual expression. The analysis corpus was the book De Morte. By the perspective of the theoretical approach of scholars as Teresa Colomer, Sonia Salomão Khède, Regina Zilberman, Marisa Lajolo, Alceu Maynard Araújo, we was considered the analysis of children literature and popular tradition, directed toward in order to examinate the characteristics that constituting the plan of expression of this work. The research still consists in the proposal to explore Angela Lago is fiction about the wonderful story and the popular story, analysing the typical characters of the Christian folklore, which actions follow the line of the wonderful tall according to Vladimir Propp. As a result we focused how the matrices of the popular story influence the contemporary children literature, specially of Angela Lago s fiction, demonstrating the importance of folklore in literature. The characters of the popular story, inscribed in a wonderful story, construct a new literary totality by the articulation of these two systems, the popular and the erudite. In this way the analysis would explore two strategies that are linked in the story: in the first one, verbal and visual represent the multiplicity of reading and, in the other one, the analysis of the characters by the functions according the morphologycal of study Propp. For these reason the graphical project of Angela Lago s work was examined within the intention of the popular story. Finally the research considered how the matrices of the popular story are presented in Brazilian children literature, particularies in De Morte, emphasizing how evil characts and vicious attitudes can be presented to children, without influencing negatively his cultural context

Abstract:
Hybridizing species of the Daphnia longispina complex are key taxa in plankton communities of many European lakes. In several of these lakes, it has been documented that the taxonomic structure of the complex during the 20th century has substantially changed following human-mediated environmental changes, particularly eutrophication and re-oligotrophication and fish stock changes. We characterize these changes in Lago Maggiore (Italy/Switzerland), a southern pre-alpine lake, which also passed through the human-mediated environmental changes. Lago Maggiore is one of best and longest studied European lakes so a large number of historical Daphnia samples from regular monitoring are available. Because local Daphnia do not form dormant egg banks suitable for genetic analysis (being able to overwinter in the water column), we used a combination of morphology and geometric morphometrics (elliptic Fourier analysis) to evaluate the taxonomic and phenotypic changes in the Daphnia longispina complex in Lago Maggiore since the mid-20th century (1948-2012), and attampted to characterize the impact of environmental changes over the respective period on Daphnia body shape and size. Examination of Daphnia phenotype indicates indeed the prevailing presence of D. longispina (hyalina morph) in the 1940s, dominance of...

Abstract:
Reducing the human environmental impact is one of the most critical issues nowadays: in this perspective, the progressive decommissioning of fossil fuels is a significant priority to guarantee a sustainable future for the next generations. This paper proposes a zero-emission ferry for inland waterways and short-sea navigation, focusing on realistic solutions to provide the best trade-off between operational performance and environmental sustainability. In particular, the object of this study is the refitting of a double-ended ferry working in the Lago Maggiore, one of the largest Italian lakes. Systems suitable for the purpose have been selected and integrated onboard to maximize efficiency, implementing full-electric propulsion with electric motors, a Li-ion battery storage system, and photo-voltaic panels. The benefits and drawbacks of the considered technologies have been evaluated to select the most promising design solution, focusing on both onboard and on-shore impact in terms of compatibility with the existing infrastructures and considering life-cycle sustainability.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Byron’s The Lament of Tasso and The Prophecy of Dante alongside his translations of Filicaja in the fourth canto of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage and Pulci’s Morgante Maggiore. It begins by exploring the ways in which Byron ‘exploited both the writings and the figures of Italian writers (especially the exiled Dante and imprisoned Tasso) to construct his own cosmopolitan poetic identity’, reinventing himself as simultaneously – and ambiguously – an English and an Italian poet. In the translation of Pulci, however, Byron stresses his foreignness to both British and Italian poetic traditions, cutting a cosmopolitan figure not through identity but difference. While in his letters – and, of course, many of his poems – Byron is both British and Italian, Italian literature could also offer the poet a way of being neither.
