Abstract:

The article is devoted to the evolutionary processes in the Italian language of the Internet, which are directly revealed at the lexical and word-formation levels. The article gives the general assessment of these processes from the point of view of a number of significant structural and sociolinguistic parameters in the context of the historical development of the Italian language. This research is based on the opposition of the language of the Internet to the structural norm of the Italian language; it is noted that the opposition is of slang nature. The key trend, as the author emphasizes, is the convergence of the oral and written forms of speech reflected in the used and normatively fixed forms of word-formation, in which traditional models as well as mixed polycodes (alphanumeric and/or alpha pictorial) are extensively used. Studying the media communication influence on the development of the Italian language, the author relies on the classification of the functional parameters of the opposition − convergence of written and oral forms of speech − by the Italian linguist G. Berruto. The main notions, which characterize such evolution, − diamesia, diastratia, diatopia, diafasia are studied. G. Berruto’s concept is developed by another Italian linguist G. Antonelli who singles out the language of the Internet communication as the culminating point of evolution. The article studies a large number of language examples revealing the picture of word-formation in the Italian language of the Internet. Word-formation is interpreted as the main factor in the normative evolution of the Italian language in the Internet communication. Particular attention is paid to contaminated word-formation methods, creolized forms of a language sign (contraction, pictogram), which are typical of the Internet language, as well as unregulated use of punctuation marks, and spelling violation. The article shows slang forms of lexical speech usage and word-formation in the Italian language of the Internet. The structural-linguistic and semiotic interpretation of the Italian Internet word-formation is given. The article carries out the rubrication of models and types of word-formation in the Italian language of the Internet. The article is suggested to specialists who are interested in semiotics of the Internet language, modern development trends of the Italian language, the peculiarities of Italian lexicology and word-formation.

Abstract:

Apocope (deletion of word-final vowels) and word-final vowel reduction are hallmarks of southern Italian varieties. To investigate whether heritage speakers reproduce the complex variable patterns of these processes, we analyze spontaneous speech of three generations of heritage Calabrian Italian speakers and a homeland comparator sample. All occurrences (N = 2477) from a list of frequent polysyllabic words are extracted from 25 speakers’ interviews and analyzed via mixed effects models. Tested predictors include: vowel identity, phonological context, clausal position, lexical frequency, word length, gender, generation, ethnic orientation and age. Homeland and heritage speakers exhibit similar distributions of full, reduced and deleted forms, but there are inter-generational differences in the constraints governing the variation. Primarily linguistic factors condition the variation. Homeland variation in reduction shows sensitivity to part of speech, while heritage speakers show sensitivity to segmental context and part of speech. Slightly different factors influence apocope, with suprasegmental factors and part of speech significant for homeland speakers, but only part of speech for heritage speakers. Surprisingly, for such a socially marked feature, few social factors are relevant. Factors influencing reduction and apocope are similar, suggesting the processes are related.

In this paper, we investigate the effect of information structure on word order in Italian and Peninsular Spanish ‘why’-interrogatives, and whether these two languages differ from each other. To this end, we conducted two empirical studies. In a parallel text corpus study, we compared the frequency of the word order patterns ‘why’SV and ‘why’VS, as well as the distribution of focal and non-focal subjects in the two languages. In order to get a deeper understanding of the impact of the information structural categories focus and givenness on word order in ‘why’-interrogatives, we conducted a forced-choice experiment. The results indicate that word order is affected by focus in Italian, while it is not determined by any information structural category in Peninsular Spanish. We show that Italian and Peninsular Spanish ‘why’-interrogatives differ from each other in two ways. First, non-focal subjects occur preverbally in Italian, while they occupy the postverbal position in Peninsular Spanish. Second, Italian reveals a lower level of optionality with respect to word order patterns. Even though we find a high preference for the postverbal position in Peninsular Spanish, we argue that this limitation is related to a higher flexibility regarding word order in Peninsular Spanish than in Italian which does not allows for ‘why’VSO in contrast to Peninsular Spanish.

Abstract General traits of the Hebrew components of Judeo-Italian Siddur translations are analyzed. The most interesting cases are those where the same Hebrew component is used differently in different contexts: (1) the same Hebrew word remains untranslated in the title and is translated by the Romance lexical unit in the text of the prayer (שבת/sabbeto; כהן/sacerdote); (2) the same Hebrew word in the divine (mystic) sense remains untranslated, while in the secular sense it is translated as the Italian word (צבאות/osti); (3) one Hebrew component lexical unit translates another Hebrew word (אִשִּׁים > קרבנות ;נשך > רבית ;חולק < טענה); (4) one form of the Hebrew word is translated by another form of the same word (עולמות > עולמים). The two latter categories are especially instructive in studying the Hebrew component of spoken and written Judeo-Italian.

Abstract:

While in Modern Italian, V1 is mandatory in absolute constructions, no such restriction is operative in Old Italian. On the surface, such a fact could be interpreted as a sign of residual V-to-Comp movement in Modern Italian. However, it is not: In Old Italian, participles targeted a position lower than Comp and, hence, the V1 pattern of Modern Italian is an innovation rather than a residue from the earlier stage. The difference between the two grammars lies in the interaction of independent properties of Old Italian and Modern Italian: First, in Old Italian, two arguments can be case licensed because of the presence of a Tense Phrase in the participle clause. In Modern Italian, where no Tense Phrase is projected, nominative can only be licensed by focus as an instance of default case assignment. Second, a general change relating to information structure has as its consequence that a focused argument is realized post-verbally in Modern Italian, which explains the obligatory V1 pattern.

Two indices of automatic orthographic processing, the word and pseudoword superiority effects, were explored in native Italian speakers familiar with English (late learners) and native English-speaking controls unfamiliar with Italian. Participants performed a forced-choice letter identification task with five categories of words: Italian words and pseudowords, English words and pseudowords, and nonwords. Native Italian speakers showed superiority effects for both languages, whereas English-speaking controls showed superiority effects only for English. These results suggest that orthographic processing can become automatic with extensive training in late bilinguals.

Abstract:

The article considers and analyzes the appearance of modern neologisms in the Italian language, the first references to the fixation of such neologisms, their use in the scientific and linguistic environment (modern lexicology). The structure of recorded new words is studied using the most common prefixes of Latin and Greek origin, nouns, adjectives and adverbs. The analysis of such vocabulary aims to explain their meaning and excludes words such as snobbery, linguistic doublets, slang and vulgarisms. Italian language, as any other language has its mechanisms of word formation and composition related to the enrichment of the vocabulary and the resolution of its lexical problems. It is not easy for Italian language to administer these mechanisms, its structures and microstructures of word formation. It is in a situation which it has to deal with the systems of word formation, which come from Latin, and also that derives from and functions from the nature of Italian. The systems of word-formation, which come from Latin, can be called to be in a “numb” situation, but also in a state that can be used dynamically in Italian language. The phenomenon of word formation stats as a morphological one, but certainly it develops and interferes as a lexical-semantic phenomenon, too. Neologisms in Italian, as in other languages, come from other foreign languages that are called “borrowed words”. Italian language, concerning neologisms, that derive other languages, has a special “attitude”, compared to other European languages. Some European languages have a more refraction attitude in relation to neologisms and their reaction is very interfering and modifying, even alternating. Whereas, concerning Italian, there is a specific reaction, which comes from the phonetic aspect. Surprisingly, phonetics seems to have a very affective role in lexicology and semantics of a language, in our case of Italian, but that does not result like this. The author's personal contribution consists in the study and systematization of modern Italian neologisms, which are recorded in modern basic dictionaries.

In questo saggio ci si propone di analizzare le varie tecniche della formazione delle parole, nelle quali l’inglese gioca un ruolo importante; per tale scopo si esamina il corpus di articoli tratti dalle prime pagine de La Stampa nei primi dieci giorni di gennaio degli anni 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 e 2010. L’analisi dei dati rivela che nel campo della formazione delle parole l’inglese gioco un ruolo importante: alcune parole sono state create da parole inglesi con l’aggiunta di un suffisso o un prefisso italiano oppure con la composizione di due elementi (uno italiano e un altro inglese) in un unico significante. L’influsso più significativo è, a nostro avviso, quello che riguarda la modifica strutturale di alcune parole italiane composte con l’ordine ‘Dnte + Dto’ tipico dell’inglese. This essay aims to analyze how and where English methods of word formation participates in Italian word formation. Results are achieved by examining a specific corpus made up of articles taken from the first pages of La Stampa and written during the first ten days of January in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010. The analysis reveals how important English is in Italian word formation: new Italian words are be formed by adding prefixes and suffixes to an English word or by combining words. In our opinion, the typical English sequence ‘Dnte+Dnto’ is one of the most significant methods of Italian word formation and it shows how English influences Italian so far.

AbstractInfants learning languages with long consonants, or geminates, have been found to ‘overselect’ and ‘overproduce’ these consonants in early words and also to commonly omit the word-initial consonant. A production study with thirty Italian children recorded at 1;3 and 1;9 strongly confirmed both of these tendencies. To test the hypothesis that it is the salience of the medial geminate that detracts attention from the initial consonant we conducted three experiments with 11-month-old Italian infants. We first established baseline word-form recognition for untrained familiar trochaic disyllables and then tested for word-form recognition, separately for words with geminates and singletons, after changing the initial consonant to create nonwords from both familiar and rare forms. Familiar words with geminates were recognized despite the change, words with singletons were not. The findings indicate that a feature occurring later in the word affects initial consonant production and perception, which supports the whole-word phonology model.

Studies of bilinguals with developmental dyslexia learning to read in two alphabetic orthographies have shown that they demonstrate similar reading and phonological short-term memory (STM) deficits in both their languages. The present study aimed at exploring whether dyslexia in adults affects similarly decoding skills in two transparent languages, Greek and Italian, whether there are similar deficits in phonological STM and whether the dominance of one of the two languages affects the manifestation of the deficits. We compared the performance of a young Greek-Italian bilingual dyslexic adult (exposed to Italian from birth, L1: Greek) to that of a young monolingual Greek dyslexic adult, a young Greek-Italian typically developing (TD) bilingual adult (exposed to Italian from birth, L1: Greek) and a young Greek monolingual TD adult. We assessed them in word and non-word reading and non-word repetition. Results showed that bilingual dyslexic adult performed significantly poorer than the bilingual TD adult on all tasks in both languages, suggesting that dyslexia affects similarly decoding and phonological STM across languages. On reading, bilingual outperformed monolingual dyslexic, while monolingual outperformed bilingual TD adult. On phonological STM, both bilinguals outperformed monolinguals. A positive effect of bilingualism was found for reading skills only for dyslexics, while it was found for phonological STM for both dyslexic and TD adults. Finally, the dominance of L1 affected bilinguals' performance in reading but not in non-word repetition, where they showed better performance in Italian, perhaps due to the phonotactic complexity of the Greek orthography compared to Italian.

Abstract In this study, we present a comparative corpus-based analysis of the English /s/ ~ /z/ voice contrast for learners of three L1s. Acoustic analysis of periodicity and duration for target segments confirms expectations based on L1 transfer and on the Markedness Differential Hypothesis. We found that, due to the absence of phonemic /z/ in Spanish, L1 Spanish learners exhibit great difficulty in producing voiced realisations for /z/, and more so in the (more marked) word-final position than in the (less marked) word-medial position. In contrast, L1 French and L1 Italian learners did not exhibit difficulties in reproducing the voicing patterns of English /s/ ~ /z/ neither word-medially nor word-finally, due to the existence of these sounds in their L1 (and despite differences in relative markedness for these two positions, especially considering that word-final /z/ does not exist in Italian). Finally, we observed the impact of orthography on the production of L1 French and L1 Italian learners, affecting the periodicity of /s/ and /z/ depending on spelling transparency.

Abstract:

In early modern Italy, lyric poets of spiritual verse experimented with engaging and depicting the divine Word in novel ways. They aestheticized bodies, including that of Christ, and they imagined eroticized encounters between themselves and the Word made flesh. This article examines the sensual spiritual poetry of three early modern Italian women who, between 1530 and 1630, dedicated themselves to crafting and reinvigorating the poetic word and to expressing and (re)presenting the divine Word. Exploring the introspective and subjective spiritual lyrics of Vittoria Colonna (1492–1547), Laura Battiferri (1523–1589), and Francesca Turini Bufalini (1553–1641) in the context of the Italian literary Renaissance and Counter-Reformation, it aims to highlight and to elucidate the conflation of the sacred and the erotic in their verse. In so doing, this article reveals how these early modern female poets deployed the sensual strategically in their verse to elevate the erotic and how they raised the Italian religious lyric to new literary heights by spiritualizing the dominant poetic idiom.

Our study aimed to examine longitudinally early development of gestures, object-actions (short for object-related-actions), word comprehension, and word production and their reciprocal relationships in typically developing infants. Twenty-two monolingual Italian infants were followed monthly from 0;10 up to 1;5 with the Italian short form of MacArthur-Bates CDI — Gestures and Words. Results showed that gestures, object-actions, and word comprehension increased significantly from 0;10 to 1;5, with an earlier development of gestures with respect to object-actions, while production started to increase significantly from 1;0. A developmental advantage of girls with respect to boys was found in gestures, object-actions and word comprehension. Relationships were evident between object-actions and word comprehension at all ages, between gestures and both word comprehension and word production in their phase of emergence, and between word comprehension and word production at the emergence of word production. Our findings suggest that gestures support the emergence of verbal abilities, while object-actions contribute to the construction of the representation of meanings.

We propose an annotation schema for derivational morphology featuring morphological, morphotactic and morphosemantic information concerning the base of the derivative as well as each derivational cycle. This schema was employed in the manual annotation of about 11,000 Italian derivatives, extracted from the CoLFIS corpus. The outcome is DerIvaTario, an annotated lexicon of Italian derivatives. The inter-annotator agreement was assessed over several variables of the annotation schema. DerIvaTario is available as an interactive database to be used for theoretical morphology and psycholinguistic research, and as a resource for automatic tagging of large Italian corpora.

Abstract:

The present study explores the changes in the meaning of the word slow, both in Italian and English, from the beginning of the Slow Food Movement (SFM) up to 2019. Since 1989 and the early days of Carlo Petrini’s SFM, technology has increasingly led people towards multi-tasking in an attempt to save time, while at the same time, back to the past trends are increasingly evident as seen in several other Slow Movements, for example, in catering and hand-made/retro chains. The concept of slowness is becoming a relevant and ethical topic that is often related to what is organic, local and sustainable, leading to the introduction of an anglicism in Italian, but also to a new whole re-semantization of the word slow in English. The primary objective of this study is to explore the semantic changes in the word slow diachronically both in Italian and in English. To this aim, two robust corpora were created, one from the Italian newspaper La Stampa and the other from the British The Guardian. The word slow was analysed within the different newspaper domains exploring frequencies, collocates, and identifying significant “repeated events” (Sinclair 2004: 28) together with their semantic preferences. Results from the diachronic analysis show that through the SFM, the word slow has taken on specific new meanings in Italian, related to the dimensions of ethics, wellbeing, and environmental awareness. These were then partly re-introduced in English. More specifically, the case of reborrowing of slow within the context of movements (slow fashion, slow tourism, etc.) has quite likely been influenced by the Italian SFM. As a matter of fact, this process of reborrowing involves both acquisition and loss in meaning in both languages. This seems to be a relevant phenomenon in a global context of constant linguistic contact where English appears to play a relevant role as a global language.

The aim of this paper is to provide the first comparative, corpus-based description of the linguistic history of the Italian numeral-word zero. We show that the formal and semantic development of zero is far more complex than has been assumed and that it is intertwined with the history of cifra, originally a medieval Latin name for the symbol ’0‘. Cifra has received little attention from linguists despite the fact that its semantic development as a polysemous word is still reflected in modern Italian and in some of the other languages here explored. We examine the occurrence of these words in the context in which numerals for the symbol ’0‘ originated, namely the mathematical register, and then consider their uses in non-mathematical sources. We employ diachronic and synchronic analysis, both intragenre (within mathematical writings) and intergenre, and provide a comparative perspective by placing side-by-side works written in a variety of languages which have so far only been studied separately. Our theoretical observations and arguments cover both semantics and morphology. We argue that cifra underwent productive word-formation processes which created new lexemes via derivation and that its semantic development is a kind of expansive synecdoche. We also set out the challenges encountered in trying to explain the form zero.

The present issue collects a group of articles which, given its linguistic, methodological, and thematic diversity, brings to light the exceptional vitality of Kant’s philosophy, while confirming the raison d’être of this journal as a forum for international research.Linguistically speaking, the articles herein published are written, in accordance with the proposed guidelines, in English, Portuguese, French, and Italian. Methodologically, several approaches are combined, namely, by resorting to a structural-thematic, historical-genetic, and comparative angle. From a thematic point of view, several relevant problems of Kant’s transcendental philosophy are laboured upon, while establishing relations with natural philosophy (or cosmology), moral philosophy, philosophy of history, philosophy of art, political philosophy, and psychology/anthropology. As to the philosophical dialogues struck in these articles, we highlight the reexamination of the connections and the enrichment of the affinities between Kant and J.-J. Rousseau (1712-78), M. Abstract:

This study examined the recognition of English words by groups of native speakers of Italian who differed in age of arrival in Canada and amount of continued native language use. The dependent variable was the number of words correctly repeated in English sentences presented in noise. Significantly higher word recognition scores were obtained for early than late bilinguals, and for early bilinguals who used Italian seldom than for early bilinguals who used Italian relatively often. A hierarchical regression analysis showed that the native Italian participants' ability to perceive English vowels and consonants accounted for a significant amount of variance in the word-recognition scores independently of age of arrival, amount of L1 use, and length of residence in Canada. The native language use effect was interpreted to have arisen from differences in the extent to which the early bilinguals' Italian phonetic system influenced the representations they developed for English vowels and consonants.

Abstract:

This examination expects to break down the diverse way by which Way of Vocal action words are understood in English and Italian. Following Talmy's differentiation between Satellite-outlined and Verb-outlined dialects, we target exhibiting how the semantic data passed on by these action words might be lost or advanced when changing from English into Italian. To do as such, four contemporary English books just as their Italian interpretations were considered. 83 English MoS action words were distinguished for a sum of 776 events. Their Italian partners (148 among action words and multi-word developments) were in this way dissected inside the Generative Lexicon model (Pustevjosky, 1998). As per our outcomes, English and Italian show a serious level of granularity in the semantic acknowledgment of Way of Vocalaction words. Also, inside this space, the resistance between a Satellite-outlined language like English and a Verb-outlined language like Italian is by all accounts obscured, since the two dialects, as a general rule, pick to conflate Way in the action word root.

"Interlanguage Connections Reflected Lexicographically. A Comparative Study of Romanian, Italian and French. The present article focuses on the concept of etymological word family and the way in which it is reflected in three Romance languages – Romanian, Italian and French – by comparing the historical and cultural journey of one single Latin etymon. I have turned my attention to the Latin verb currere and its family, which have been inherited or borrowed in the three languages under discussion. Analysing the way in which these words are presented in the representative etymological and historical dictionaries (DELR for Romanian, DHLF for French and VLI for Italian), the productivity of the main etymon and its family and, implicitly, the underlying Latin model are discussed. The analysis emphasises both the situation from each individual language, and the inter-linguistic reality, making reference to the cultural contacts existing between the three languages and societies. Starting from an individual case, the main purpose of this study is to show the hereditary and cultural unity of Romanian, Italian and French and the way it has been reflected diachronically via linguistic means. "Word Order in the Chronicon Vulturnense. The aim of this paper is to present a linguistic analysis of the Chronicon Vulturnense, a “roborated chronicle” written in Latin in the first half of the 12th century by a monk of the monastery of San Vincenzo at Volturno. The work, which is characterised by the repeated interweaving of chronological and documentary parts, offers interesting insights for the study of the interaction and co-presence of different linguistic repertoires in the written forms of the centuries immediately following the first attestations of vernacular Italian. In particular, the study of word order shows a tendency towards constructions with the verb in a final position in narrative parts and in a central position in documentary parts, while throughout the chronicle proper there is a high frequency of constructions with postverbal subjects, as occurs in many texts of ancient Italian. Abstract Notwithstanding the primacy of the CV syllable, a number of languages allow for more complex types of syllables. In particular, word-initial consonant clusters are particularly challenging for any phonological theory. In this paper it is argued that obstruent clusters may be the result of casual speech processes where the most salient/ frequent phonemes and features occurring in most pronunciation variants of a word are preserved. As a result, sibilants, being acoustically salient, tend to occur more often than other obstruents as the first member of word-initial obstruent clusters. A framework couched in Optimality Theory is presented, where a subfamily of faithfulness constraints refer to strength values stored in the underlying representation. The more salient and/or frequent a phoneme/feature is, the higher the strength value assigned to it. Finally, a number of languages are compared, arguing that their phonotactic differences may be due to the different ranking of markedness constraints and MAX-STRENGTHVALUE constraints.

The paper proposes a reassessment of the division of Italian verbs into classes, and proposes a model for the mental representation of inflectional paradigms. The treatment is rooted in a thematic model of morphology, according to which the identification of a unique (basic) form for lexemes is not a priority, not even for the regular ones. Rather, it is assumed that lexemes may be stored in the lexicon as complex entries containing different phonological forms, called stems. The model proposed aims at reducing complexity not by reducing all forms to unity, but by describing the relations between stems and by reducing the inventory of their possible configurations, or stem spaces.

AbstractLearning to pronounce a written word implies assigning a stress pattern to that word. This task can present a challenge for speakers of languages like Italian, in which stress information must often be computed from distributional properties of the language, especially for individuals learning Italian as a second language (L2). Here, we aimed to characterize the processes underlying the development of stress assignment in native English and native Chinese speakers learning L2 Italian. Both types of bilinguals produced evidence supporting a role of vocabulary size in modulating the type of distributional information used in stress assignment, with an early bias for Italian's dominant stress pattern being gradually replaced by use of associations between orthographic sequences and stress patterns in more advanced bilinguals. We also obtained some evidence for a transfer of stress assignment habits from the bilinguals’ native language to Italian, although only in English native speakers.

Overabundance occurs when two or more forms are available to realize the same cell in an inflectional paradigm, as in It. devo/debbo ‘must.1sg.prs.ind’. Such multiple forms, called cell-mates, abound in Italian. This paper presents a case study of the diachronic evolution of the cell-mates realizing the 1sg and 3pl cells of the Present Indicative of the verbs dovere ‘must’, vedere ‘see’, chiedere ‘ask’, sedere ‘sit’, possedere ‘possess’. Analysis of corpora of Italian texts dating from the 13th to the 20th century shows that some cases of overabundance were reduced over time, while others have been maintained till the present. This paper explores the factors responsible for these different outcomes. Previous observations that overabundance tends to be better preserved in low-frequency items and in forms learned relatively late appear confirmed by the Italian data; in addition, conscious normative interventions have been found to play a great role in the Italian situation. In conclusion, this study shows that overabundance is a genuine type of non-canonical phenomenon that can occur in paradigms; the idea often put forward in the literature, that overabundance will eventually inevitably be eliminated in all cases, is not fully supported by the data.

This paper investigates the Italian Word Order variation in the position of subjects (S) with respect to finite predicates (V) in two adult populations: L1-Italian speakers and L1-French L2-Italian speakers. We test how discourse focus (Belletti, 2001) and a decomposed approach to Unaccusativity, i.e., Unaccusativity Hierarchy (Sorace, 2000), determine the SV/VS variation in L1 and L2 populations. The results of a forced-choice preference task show that both factors constrain the Italian word order in L1 and L2 Italian speakers: the VS order was preferred in the narrow focus and with Change of Location unaccusative verbs in both populations, although with different proportions. Overall L2 speakers chose the SV order more consistently than L1 speakers but they did so mainly with the less-core unaccusative verbs of the Unaccusativity Hierarchy. We account for these findings suggesting a return to the original version of the Interface Hypothesis (Sorace, 2005), which predicts that interface phenomena, including those at the syntax-lexicon interface, represent a vulnerable domain in L2 acquisition.

Word-formation and compounding in Italian present many interesting challenges (classification of compounds, its interpretation and types of semantic relationship that may hold between the compound’s elements). This article attempts to examine a different one — the orthography of one productive compounding pattern in present-day Italian, that is Verb + Noun compounds. Various accounts of Verb + Noun ortography are reviewed, with special focus on the status of hyphenated words. In light of this data, the author focuces also on the problem of inclusion of compounds as multi-word units by dictionaries. The aim of this research is to contrast theoretical prescriptions with some data samples of Italian (Noun) Verb + Noun compounds drawn from La Gazzetta dello Sport (2016—2020). With this analysis the author wants to examine more in detail whether the use reflects what Italian grammarians claim about the Verb + Noun compounds ortography rules, because in various researches conducted in this field that aspect has often been neglected.

Abstract:

The apparent or latent French notes-citations in the manuscripts of Solomos's The Free Besieged reveal both the multilingual nature of Solomos as a reader-copyist and the translingual character of his writing process. Relevant to the latter is the fact that Solomos often proceeds in translating the French passages he reproduces into Italian, without necessarily the context revealing the existence of the French original. More specifically, in recording the notes-citations, Solomos exhausts both the monolingual option of copying (French) and the interlingual possibilities of translating word for word into Italian or of faithfully rendering it in a mixed language (French-Italian). The target of this paper is to compare the Italian translations to the French original texts, aiming on the one hand to identify any discrepancies in Solomos's translation options, and on the other, to examine Solomos's interlingual, if not translingual, process of translating as well as the phenomena of code switching and cross-linguistic influence resulting from it.

Abstract:

The paper discusses fixed units, raging from non-idiomatic phraseological units to idioms, naming death in Polish and Italian. Two corpora of word combinations have been excerpted from lexicographic works in order to conduct the analysis covering the following aspect: motivation, stylistics, axiology, semantics with a special focus on specifying function of the units, equivalence. The stylistics of the units vary greatly, since their functions range from elevation of the death to its depreciating, which results from the fact that word combinations perform a variety of psychological functions. The vast majority of the word combinatio ns excerpted appear in both languages, since either they are of Christian, especially biblical, or mythological origins. Other units belonging to the group are those reflecting common observations of the process of dying as well as the funeral culture. Therefore, the idioms belonging to the group are word combinations of a high degree of translatability. In many cases such idioms appear not only in Polish and Italian, but in other languages as well,, since they are of international character. However, there are units appearing only in one of the languages, i.e. either Polish or Italian. Some of them are products of metaphorical thinking specific to the nation, others base on word play. Moreover, certain idioms have a cultural motivation of national character, for instance they refer to the element of reality important only in a given culture or the key component is a proper name of national importance.

In February 2016 an elementary school kid from the vicinity of Ferrara (Italy) submitted, jointly with his teacher, an application to the “Accademia della Crusca”, the oldest linguistics academy in the world, to propose including the new word “petaloso”, which literally means “petal-y”, in the Italian language. The official reply from the academy, explains that «a new word does not enter the vocabulary when someone invents it, even if it is a “beautiful” and useful word. For it to enter a vocabulary, in fact, the new word must not be known and used only by those who invented it, but it’s necessary that many people use it and many people understand it.» And continues: «That's how it works: it's not the scholars, the ones who make dictionaries, who decide which new words are beautiful or ugly, useful or useless. When a new word is on everyone's (or many's) lips, then the scholar understands that that word has become a word like the others and puts it in the vocabulary.» Such news had all the perfect ingredients to not pass unobserved in online media and, after being bounced around in a few newspaper websites, it quickly spiralled up, when the Italian prime minister retweeted the hashtag #petaloso.

The aim of this paper is to discuss topics in contrastive morphology, combining the perspectives of morphological theory and contrastive linguistics. After an overview of the recent literature on contrastive morphology and the relevant ‘tertia comparationis’ in Section 2, Section 3 focuses on the main differences between compounding in Modern Greek and Italian (e.g. the position of the morphological head, the pattern stem+stem in Modern Greek vs. the pattern word+word in Italian). The diachronic dimension, the inflectional system and the role of syntax are put forward as explanatory factors for the differences between the two languages. Two recent types of compounds, [V+V] V in Modern Greek and [V+N] N in Italian, are therefore examined contrastively. The contrastive analysis of compounding is based on three types of equivalence: ‘system equivalence’, ‘rule equivalence’, and ‘morphological age equivalence’. The main conclusion is that a contrastive approach to morphology enables us to deepen our understanding of both the fundamental distinction and the fundamental interconnection between morphology and syntax.

Distributional semantics has been for long a source of successful models in psycholinguistics, permitting to obtain semantic estimates for a large number of words in an automatic and fast way. However, resources in this respect remain scarce or limitedly accessible for languages different from English. The present paper describes WEISS (Word-Embeddings Italian Semantic Space), a distributional semantic model based on Italian. WEISS includes models of semantic representations that are trained adopting state-of-the-art word-embeddings methods, applying neural networks to induce distributed representations for lexical meanings. The resource is evaluated against two test sets, demonstrating that WEISS obtains a better performance with respect to a baseline encoding word associations. Moreover, an extensive qualitative analysis of the WEISS output provides examples of the model potentialities in capturing several semantic phenomena. Two variants of WEISS are released and made easily accessible via web through the SNAUT graphic interface.

ABSTRACTThis study assesses the extent of phonetic continuity between babble and words in four Italian children followed longitudinally from 0 ; 9 or 0 ; 10 to 2 ; 0 – two with relatively rapid and two with slower lexical growth. Prelinguistic phonetic characteristics, including both (a) consistent use of specific consonants and (b) age of onset and extent of consonant variegation in babble, are found to predict rate of lexical advance and to relate to the form of the early words. In addition, each child's lexical profile is analyzed to test the hypothesis of non-linearity in phonological development. All of the children show the expected pattern of phonological advance: Relatively accurate first word production is followed by lexical expansion, characterized by a decrease in accuracy and an increase of similarity between word forms. We interpret such a profile as reflecting the emergence of word templates, a first step in phonological organization.

The goal of the article is to provide a comparison between several words from Florentine vernacular language and modern Italian language, using software written by the author. This paper focuses on two corpora: the first one includes a selection of Florentine vernacular literature and the second one a group of literary books written in a modern Italian language from the end of XIX Century up until the present. The article demonstrates the use of some features of the software to compare the two corpora, ranking the lexicographic entries using different strategies. It is possible to analyse the lexicon taking into consideration different types of sorting, using only three parameters: the word frequency, the percentage of frequency according to the number of words in the corpus, and the percentage of texts where the word is found in the corpus. From these parameters a fourth parameter also arises the level of persistence of words in each corpus. The software allows observing the differences in the use of lexicon in various periods of history, comparing the Florentine vernacular language, which was used in the Italian peninsula till the beginning of XIX Century, to the modern Italian language.

The present study focuses on the identification and categorization of some cases of lexical adaptation and innovation, i.e., compounds, acronyms and borrowings, in the American Instagram accounts of nine agri-food Italian companies selling their products worldwide. The aim of the analysis is to investigate how and to what extent word formation processes in advertising discourse contribute to enhancing Italian products abroad and to promoting the ‘made in Italy’ concept. Examples of adapted and new terms gathered from the Instagram profile pages will be presented and examined within the promotional framework. Their presence will be then contextualised outside the American photo and video sharing social networking service to hypothesise their future lexicalisation.

In this article I discuss the comparative method in formal linguistics when applied to word order phenomena in Italian, English and German. I argue that the comparison has to rest on sound theoretical basis in order to reach interesting conclusions. These languages might prima facie all look Subject- Verb-Object – SVO – languages, with some puzzling issues arising in German. At a closer look however, I will show that English and Italian pattern together as their basic word order – i.e., SVO – goes, as opposed to German, an SOV language. Conversely, English and German pattern together with respect to a property typical, even if not exclusively so, of Germanic languages, i.e. Verb Second.

Abstract:

The topic of this article is ‘weight’ in the German-Italian language comparison. Which linguistic means are used to refer to weight in German (Gewicht) and what are the Italian equivalents? The material which has been collected is based on monolingual German and Italian dictionaries, reference works and text corpora as well as on bilingual German-Italian dictionaries and text excerpts. The classification of the so-called weight designations including derivatives, composites and word combinations is carried out from an etymological and lexical perspective. In addition to the dictionary entries, German-Italian translation examples show further equivalents of terms and expressions with regards to ‘weight’ in this language pair.
