Based on the magazine “Świerszczyk”, the author decided to present the motif of the movement that was captured in the magazine. On this basis, it was presented how to properly shape and expand children’s willingness to contact the book, as well as the importance of contact with the book for the child’s development. Abstract:
The aim of this research is to identify the values of a family and society, reflected in advertising discourse including bibliographic advertisement on the pages of women’s periodicals of the NEP era. New empirical material is introduced into scientific circulation: texts of traditional and editorial book advertisement of non-state periodicals for women (Magazine for housewives, 1922–1926, Women’s magazine, 1926–1930). The relevance of the research is due to the necessity of studying bibliographic advertisement in women’s specialized magazines, which has not been included previously in the orbit of scientific interest. The basic research methods are historical and typological, comparative historical, methods of linguistic and textual analysis, entire overview. The authors reveal the importance of bibliographic advertisement on the pages of “Magazine for housewives” and “Women’s magazine” in process of transformation of the value paradigm in post-revolutionary Russia, reconsideration of the old and consolidation of the new gender roles of a woman in Soviet society (the wife, the mother, the housewife, the worker, the social activist). Using syncretic of their genre nature texts on the pages of Magazine for housewives and Women’s magazine actualizes genres of bookselling advertisement (annotation, price list) as well as media genres (mini-review and review, recommendation, etc.). Comparisons, lexical repetitions, superlatives of adjectives, calls to action, etc. were used as means of language suggestion in book advertisement in specialized magazines. Indication of the uniqueness of a book novelty, promise of a gift or a benefit and personalization are becoming the universal methods of book advertisement. Since the strategies tested in bibliographic advertisement of the NEP era were actively developed in the subsequent period, our results can be used in future analysis of axiological context of the Soviet advertising discourse.

Abstract:
Abstract In India, as in other parts of the world, readers’ exposure to the world and to world literatures largely took place through the pages of magazines, via translations, reviews, snippets of information, survey articles, and so on. The 1950s to 1970s were the golden age of magazine publishing in Hindi. Several Hindi magazines devoted to the short story not only showcased new literary talent but also invested much effort in translating writings from foreign literatures and from other Indian languages. Competing Cold War efforts to promote literatures from their rival spheres of influence produced a profusion of literary translations in magazine and book form, on which enterprising Hindi editors freely drew. This essay focuses on the spectacular special issues curated by Kamleshwar for two Hindi story magazines to explore the nexus between the short story, the magazine, and the world.

Software is data that is programmed, stored, and digitally formatted with a specific function. This device itself does not have a physical form, you can operate it via a computer. For its own manufacture, this device requires a programming language written by a programmer/person who is an expert in the field. The reason is, with software that is a command program to run the needs on a computer. Adobe Indesign is a software to layout a magazine or book. In the process of applying Adobe Indesign, all materials are prepared neatly and are in one folder in order to facilitate the place in the process of laying out books or magazines as one of the final goals to be done. Even though it is neat, the important point is how to style a design work in the form of a book or magazine which will later be published to the public. To achieve this, it is necessary to pay attention to various design elements and principles in the layout. Adobe Indesign is often used by designers or smaller is a magazine designer in helping the process of arranging the layout and making it easier to create page by page. This software allows designers to lay out more pages in one book and certainly not too big if used as a raw file. With some of the above foundations, we plan to carry out community service activities with the concept of "Adobe Indesign Training for SMKN 58 Teachers to Improve Productive Teacher Competence". It is hoped that with this community service activity, which contains several Adobe Indesign operating materials, it can make it easier for SMKN 58 teachers to teach the software to students and of course can improve skill competence.

Abstract:
The article is aimed to find out the Techniques of Translating English Figurative Expression in ‘Colours’ Magazine by Garuda Indonesia into Indonesian. There are three problems are discussed in this study, namely (1) types of figurative expressions found in the English version of ‘Colours’ magazine and their translation’s equivalence into Indonesian and (2) kinds of translation techniques applied in translating the English figurative expression into Indonesian, This research belongs to qualitative research and the data used in this study were taken from the ‘Colours’ magazine by Garuda Indonesia. The main theory which is applied in this study is taken from the theory of Molina & Albir (2002) in their book entitled Translation Techniques Revisited; A Dynamic and Functionalist Approach. Another theory applied is taken from the theory of McArthur (1992) in his book entitled The Oxford Companion on The English Language. Other supporting theories which are used to support this study are the theory of Larson (1998) in her book entitled Meaning-Based Translation and some other books considered relevant to the topic. The result showed that there are eleven kinds of English figurative expressions found in the data. They are antithesis, euphemism, hyperbole, idioms, irony, metaphor, metonimy, personification, pleonasm, simile and synecdoche. In translating techniques, the translator applied ten translating techniques, they are; adaptation, borrowing, compensation, description, established equivalent, linguistic comprehension, literal technique, modulation, reduction and transposition. In translating a figurative expression from SL into TL, some of the results showed that an English figurative expression is translated into Indonesian figurative translation but some of them can not maintain its figurativeness in Indonesian, therefore the English figurative expression is translated into Indonesian non-figuratively. Abstract:
The essay argues that the oriental parable “Ziou-Zioung. A Chinese Anecdote” published in No. 9 of the magazine Ni To ni Sio (“Neither This nor That”) on April 25, 1769, is a fragment of “The Citizen of the World, or Letters from a Chinese Philosopher” by Oliver Goldsmith (1760–1761, book edition 1762), translated with some changes. The translation is presumably attributed to Fyodor Lazinsky. The paper traces the way of Goldsmith’s plot from the English original to the Russian version. The parable is taken from the French translation of Goldsmith’s book by P. Poivre (1763) and reprinted in the magazine Recueil pour l’esprit & pour le cœur under the title “Ziou-Zioung” (1764). The text of the French magazine is translated into German; it appears in Berlinisches Magazin (1765), from where it is borrowed by the Russian translator. The separation from the original context and a chain of transformations in successive translations, although each of these transformations is minor leads to a substantial change of meaning. While Goldsmith aims his satire at those who are proud of unworthy things, German and Russian versions condemn pride as such.

This article reflects on the methodological and theoretical issues raised in the process of conceiving a history of mid-twentieth century periodical publication in Australia (1920–1970). It argues for an ‘institutional history’ of magazines and defines such an approach through a number of overlapping themes and questions: an examination of the cultural significance of the periodical's ‘periodicity’; its shifting location in the print culture between the newspaper and the book; the relation of magazines to the marketplace and to professional journalism; the role of magazines in the formation of a modern intelligentsia; and magazines as belonging to a history of modernity in Australia, a ‘history of writing’ and a history of audiences.

We are talking about the magazine "Malyatko", designed for preschool children, the magazine "Barvinok", which was published for children of preschool and primary school age, the magazine "Pioneer", which reached the teenage audience. All these magazines still exist under their former names, with the exception of the magazine "Pioneer", which is now published under the name "Classmate". The processed editions were published in large editions, distributed among readers at symbolic prices and were distinguished by their powerful educational potential. The editorial boards of these journals have mastered and widely used acceptable for today's practical pedagogy forms of work with the younger generation. Children were instilled with high moral qualities, such as honesty, friendliness, diligence, devotion to the Fatherland, respect for the elderly, equal treatment of people of all races, nations and nationalities, care for nature and more. Abstract:
The literary magazine «Otechestvennye Zapiski» legitimately belongs to the realm of the most known and reputable periodicals in the history of Russian journalism. Its publishers did everything possible to refine the journalistic style of its content and to turn each issue or, a book, as they used to call them, into high-quality classical thick literary magazines. The magazine published articles and stories of various genres. All of them stood out in terms of the high-quality writing. Both, up-and-coming and established authors dreamed of a publication there. At the same time, all of them realized that it was crucial to write something special for «Otechestvennye Zapiski», something not to be found in any other magazine. For many years, the magazine had a reputation of journalism training school. Yet, not only had it shaped outstanding journalists. Many up-and-coming writers became famous after the magazine featured their first works. Those, who we call today the classics of Russian literature, were among them. The magazine discovered Mikhail Lermontov to the world by being the first publisher of his short novels «Bela», «Fatalist», and «Taman» which later became parts of the novel «A Hero of Our Time». Many poems of Lermontov found the readers through «Otechestvennye Zapiski». Some of the early works of Nikolay Gogol and Fyodor Dostoyevsky were first featured there. It was this magazine, where young Turgenev gave his early poems as well. Plays of Alexander Ostrovsky went to the stages of the leading theaters shortly after being published in «Otechestvennye Zapiski». Taking advantage of the glory of a brilliant literary and artistic magazine, “Otechestvennye Zapiski” made a great contribution to the Russian culture. From the first years of its existence, articles on the newly opened private art galleries, numismatic collections, libraries, and various art exhibitions began to appear on its pages. From the very beginning of its publication and up to its closure, the journal carried out an important educational mission.

Abstract This article traces the history of the first successful American women's fashion magazines, meaning publications that lasted longer than five years and with a national reach, which gained a foothold in the mid-1800s. The origin and growth of Godey's Lady's Book are highlighted as a model for many future publications, and two of its contemporaries: Harper's Bazar and The Delineator. The catalyst for this achievement in the magazine industry is examined through changing cultural attitudes towards leisure reading for women, increased time for recreation as made possible by modern technology and other technological advancements in publishing and distribution. In tandem with this development, career opportunities created for women within this growing industry and the continued cultivation of women's educational and vocational advancements are discussed. The important foundations established during this period have led to recognizable formulas for success that are still appreciated and utilized in the magazine industry today.

Abstract:
On June 9, 1860, the publishing firm of Irving P. Beadle and Company announced in the New York Daily Tribune the publication of their first dime novel, Ann S. Stephens's Malaeska: The Indian Wife of the White Hunter. The narrative was advertised as “the best story of the day,” and its writer as “the star of American authors.” Stephens, whose name is familiar today only to scholars of the dime novel, was indeed well known to the reading public around the mid-19th Century. She was on the editorial board of several magazines, including the illustrious Graham's Magazine. She had published her own journal, Mrs. Stephens Illustrated New Monthly. And she wrote for a plethora of popular magazines, among others the Columbian Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine, the Ladies' Wreath, Frank Leslie's Ladies' Gazette of Fashion, and Peterson's Magazine. Her 1854 urban melodrama Fashion and Famine had to be printed three times during the first month of publication to satisfy the demand of the public, and eventlually sold a record eighty thousand copies. Her historical novels, generally of European setting, were so successful that they were systematically printed in book form by the Philadelphia publisher T. B. Peterson after they had appeared serially in Charles J. Peterson's literary monthly. And Stephens had the sanction of the critics as well as the public: already in 1848 the American Literary Magazine had eulogized her by stating that “of the numerous female writers of our country, Mrs. Stephens is deservedly classed among the first.” Charles J. Peterson had declared in the pages of Graham's Magazine that “no writer, since Sir Walter Scott, had excelled her in … power of description.” And even Edgar Allan Poe had acknowledged that Stephens could “seize adroitly on salient incidents and present them with vividness to the eye,” was “not unskillful in delineation of character,” and could, in conclusion, be granted “the effervescence of high talent, if not exactly of genius.”

Descriptive scanning model was used in the research. The universe of the research consists of primary school students studying in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades in Istanbul. The sample of the study consists of 534 primary school students who study in 2, 3 and 4 classes in primary schools in Avcılar and Beylikdüzü districts of Istanbul. In the research, “Personal Information Form” and “Reading Attitude Scale” were used as data collection tools. SPSS was used in the analysis of the data. As a result of data analysis, it was observed that primary school students' attitudes towards reading were high. The attitudes of primary school students towards reading show a statistically significant difference in the total scores, in the reading for fun and in the academic reading sub-dimensions according to variables of gender, book-magazine reading status and state of enjoying the gift of books. The attitudes of female students, those who read books and magazines, and those who like to give books to them are higher. The attitudes of primary school students towards reading show a statistically significant difference according to the variable of buying book magazines to read in the sub-dimension of reading for entertainment and in the total scores. This difference is in favor of those who buy book and magazines to read. The attitudes of primary school students towards reading show a statistically significant difference in sub-dimension of reading for entertainment purposes according to the number of siblings. The attitudes of primary school students towards reading show a statistically significant difference in the total scores, in the reading for fun and in the academic reading sub-dimensions according to the variables of the class she studied and the number of books read per week. Primary school students' attitudes towards reading do not show a statistically significant difference according to variables.of mother and father educational status and favorite book type.

Abstract:
The reviewer finds A. Grodetskaya’s scholarly contributions particularly valuable because they result from open-minded research. Equally undeniable are her achievements in the preparation and publication of Goncharov’s Complete Works and Letters. The book refers to the Maykovs’ literary circle alternately as a literary salon, a circle, or a literary home, each implying an air of literary domesticity. A member of the Maykovs’ literary circle, V. Solonitsyn collaborated with Biblioteka Dlya Chteniya (a monthly printed magazine) and had a number of works by other members published there; interestingly, he also instigated the Maykovs’ handwritten magazines. Homemade journalism coexisted with professional literary work. Goncharov may have started as a professional author, but in the Maykovs’ salon he drifted towards amateur art. He could not imagine his life without writing and discovered many channels like Biblioteka Dlya Chteniya, Podsnezhnik (a handwritten magazine), and the opportunity to join the expedition of the frigate Pallada, which produced a series of the famous sketches penned as private journal entries.

Abstract:
Abstract This article traces medical book reviews up to 1800 in the first scientific periodical, The Philosophical Transactions (pt 1665–), and the first general magazine, The Gentleman’s Magazine (gm 1665–1922), within the frame of genre theory, focusing on polite and impolite speech acts. pt readers formed a close network of Royal Society members, while gm attracted a large and more heterogeneous readership. The method employed is qualitative discourse analysis in its sociohistorical context. Two different lines of development emerge. The first issue of pt contains a book review that set a model genre script by surveying the contents and providing a concise positive evaluation at the end. gm published few book reviews at first but their number increased towards 1800. pt keeps to the positive end of evaluation with discreet criticism, while gm speech acts range from praising compliments to aggressive insults. The former trend goes back to book advertisements and the latter to scientific disputes; but in general, polite society conventions prevail in both publications.

Abstract:
Now that we have the opportunity to view Ukrainian art in all its manifestations without ideological reservations and political boundaries, it is important to highlight magazine graphics. If the magazine graphic of the Ukrainian artists of the Russian and Soviet empires of the first half of the XX century is more or less investigated, then the Galician-Ukrainian cultural renaissance of the interwar twenty years in Lviv still requires its in-depth study. 1920s-30s of the XX century – time of productive ideas in the art of Ukrainian book and magazine graphics. A wave of emigration of creative intellectuals from eastern Ukraine comes to Lviv, which, combined with prominent local masters who received brilliant education in the West, raised the development of artistic culture, in particular book and magazine graphics, at an unprecedented level. Lviv was at the crossroads of diverse aesthetic ideas. All the contemporary art currents that reflected in the high artistic phenomenon – "Lviv's formalism" – were reflected here. An important factor in the history of the Galician artistic movement of the 1920s–1930s was the founding of the Association of Independent Ukrainian Artists. Its main purpose was popularization and development of Ukrainian art, education of creative youth, assistance to Ukrainian artists. The Lviv Magazine graph between the two world wars demonstrated the diversity of artistic currents and was of great importance for the holistic development of Ukrainian culture. She demonstrated the high professionalism of the artists and organically fit into the pan-European art. Given the dispersal of Ukrainians and the danger of assimilation, the publishing business with its book and magazine covers encouraged and supported the cultural life of the Ukrainian diaspora. The artists who worked on preserving the Ukrainian national culture adapted the diversity of artistic currents and influences to national characteristics.

Abstract:
In recent years, the processes of media consumption have exposed a significant transformation. The place of reading in its structure also has changed. The article discusses the similarities between reading books and magazines as a process itself and sociocultural practice. The author suggests that book, magazine and news media consumption is in a relationship of mutual support and mutual influence. The author argues that the habit of such "long" reading is being influenced by crisis phenomena in the periodical segment: a sharp decline in readership, a decline in print circulation and difficulty in accessing. In recent years, the focus on electronic formats of publications has been the main direction in the transformation of reader practices. If e-books are considered as the same "long” reading practice, the similarity with media consumption practices on the Internet, especially in social networks, is doubtful. Despite the fact that in the Internet and social networks the audience also "reads", the intellectual ethic of consuming quick unrelated pieces of information from a variety of sources is changing this sociocultural practice itself. Soon, book reading, quite possibly, will depend on the accumulated practices of Internet surfing, Internet reading and the ability of people to deal with long texts.

Abstract:
Muhammed Seid Serdarević belongs to the respected Serdarević family of Zenica, the family that gave the medresah in Zenica some distinguished alims, Muhammed Seid Serdarevic being one of them. He went to school in Sarajevo, and graduated from Gazi-Husrevbey’s hanihak and Daru-l-mu’allimin where he stood out for above-average intelligence. Thanks to that fact for some time he was muderris’ assistant on shariah-law subject Multeku-l-ebhur. Recognizing the exceptional effort and complexity of studying theological disciplines in Arabic, Turkish and Persian language, together with Mehmed Dzemaluddin Causevic, he embarks upon translating and transcribing some of the literature books into Bosnian language. Those translations made studying easier and shortened enormously long schooling period in medresahs. He wrote many literature books during the period between 1905 and 1917, and among them there is one that stands apart i.e. shariah-law literature book Fiqhu-l-ibadat in Bosnian language written in Bosancica script, which at the time, considering still firm conservative orientation of some of the Bosniak ulema, was a categorical and brave gesture. This very book will be, for a few decades, a major fiqh literature book in the most of Bosnian medresahs. Muhammed Seid Serdarevic was an active contributor to almost all Islamic papers and magazines at the time. His didactical-pedagogical works in a magazine Muallim, published at the beginning of the 20th century, were exceptionally well-received. He was its editor-in-chief and contributor since the establishing of the magazine. After his father’s death he was appointed muderris of the Zenica medresah, a duty he would exercise till the end of his life in 1918. Serdarevic taught the key theological subjects where he had an opportunity to successfully apply his methodological-pedagogical knowledge, although he exercised that duty for only five years which is a relatively short period of time. Medresah would later on (1927), thanks to, among other things, his intellectual engagement, become a coeducational school which was a unique example in this region and even wider. A short but peculiar life of Muhammed Seid Serdarevic testifies that he was an alim whose work has important historical dimensions.

Abstract:
This essay examines the recurring preoccupation with geography in W. E. B. Du Bois’s and Jessie Redmon Fauset’s African American children’s magazine, The Brownies’ Book (1920–1921). Drawing in part on conventions established by early Black periodicals, including an emphasis on the rich global presence of non-Western peoples and places, many of the magazine’s features, from its stories and poems to its images and games, offered Black children a much wider view of their place in the world—both literally and imaginatively—than that provided by typical U.S. schoolroom atlases and geographies, which tended to have little to say (or show) about countries and continents outside North America and Europe. By aiming to develop in its readers alternative forms of geographic and political consciousness, The Brownies’ Book provocatively recast geography as a radical mode of knowledge available to Black children through cultural as well as cartographic forms, in the process remapping Black childhood itself.

Boratynsky, the first one appeared in Pushkin’s “Sovremennik” magazine in 1836, the other one was published in Boratynsky’s book of verse “Sumerki” in 1842, and the untitled poem by V. V. Mayakovsky which appeared first in the book “Ya!” in 1913 and then in “Prostoe kak mychanie” in 1916. The transformations of the poems changed not only the meaning of the text but its function and played an important role in constructing of the artistic entity of the books. Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the reception of Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring in Scandinavian family gardening magazines. In Sweden, Norway and Denmark, family gardening associations were broad organisations with significant social impact. They were the most important arenas for transfer of scientific knowledge and values on gardening, linking plant protection experts, producers and sellers of gardening chemicals, horticultural advisors and the general public. Thus, these associations and their magazines influenced many social groups that had common interests in non-commercial gardening as part of their everyday life. In practice, these family gardening magazines were heavily dependent on the income from garden chemicals advertisements. Consequently, their editorial policies and plant protection technical advice were deeply rooted in the post-war ideals of chemical agriculture and horticulture. These ideals were pursued and applied everywhere—even into the tiniest allotment and family garden. Scandinavian countries and their gardening associations have many similarities and some differences between them. This makes them an interesting case for comparison. The gardening magazines of Sweden, Norway and Denmark show quite a few similarities in the way they first pretended to ignore Carson while spending much effort countering the possible effects of her message, and in the way they retrospectively engaged with her book. There are, however, quite interesting differences in the way the national garden associations, their magazine editors and the magazines’ pesticide experts handled the publicity generated by Silent Spring on the harmfulness of garden chemicals.

Abstract:
The specific character of the interwar period promoted the development of specialist magazines, among others, also magazines from the field of pedagogy. Those periodicals published discussions and disputes which were a creative contribution of Polish thinkers, scholars and teachers-practicians into the process of the restoration of Poland by means of improving the quality of educational activities. Kultura i Wychowanie (“Culture and Education”) was one of such magazines which owed its high specialist level mainly to its chief editor – Bogdan Suchodolski. Kultura i Wychowanie attracted a number of eminent authors, including Sergiusz Hessen. The presented article focuses on the works of this Russian pedagogue published in the discussed magazine and, first of all, his contribution into the construction of the theoretical foundations of the Polish pedagogy of culture from the period of the Second Polish Republic. The articles of Hessen, published in B. Suchodolski’s periodical, were an elaboration of the philosophy which the author presented earlier in his book Podstawy pedagogiki (“The Foundations of Pedagogy”). They were also preparatory considerations to his subsequent book entitled O sprzecznościach i jedności wychowania (“On Contradictions and Unity of Education”). The subjects of these articles concern two areas: the essence and meaning of Weltanschaung and the role of the concept of general education. The author of the article specifies in S. Hessen’s works published in the magazine Kultura i Wychowanie a number of ideas and concepts which contributed to the formation of the theoretical foundations of the Polish pedagogy of culture in the interwar period. They included: – a concept of a teacher fulfilling a role of a liberating authority; the liberating and upbringing education; the idea of “acquiring” personality via “acquiring” one’s own Weltanschaung; a constant tension between community and individualism; co-creation of culture by individual people as the main factor of its development; the manifestation of the layers of existence at the subsequent stages of education.

Alfonsas Nyka-Niliūnas (1919–2015), the celebrated Lithuanian poet of the 20th century, was also one of the most prominent literary critics. For more than two decades, he had been an active literary critic, publishing his texts in Lithuanian émigré literary and culture magazines. In addition to his studies on the history and criticism of Lithuanian literature, articles on Western and Lithuanian classics, Nyka-Niliūnas wrote literary reviews. In the field of Lithuanian émigré literature and criticism, he validated a certain type of critical review which emphasized novelty, originality and evaluation of the book in question.Nyka-Niliūnas wrote his first reviews in a monthly pedagogical journal, Tremtinių mokykla [School of Exiles], published in a German DP camp. The reviews published in the journal, and later in the cultural magazine, Aidai [Echoes], stood out for their completeness, coherent structure, and strict and straightforward evaluation that allowed seeing a particular book in a broader context. A number of Nyka-Niliūnas’s reviews of this period sparked controversy and encouraged literary dialogue. In the US, Nyka-Niliūnas continued to publish literary reviews in Aidai and literary magazine, Literatūros lankai [The Pages of Literature]. In the reviews written during this period, he debated with a group of critics who held a different opinion, established the criteria for evaluating the literature, and highlighted the objectives and the importance of a literary review. Nyka-Niliūnas’s reviews can be characterized not only by author’s suggestive argumentation and fiery style, but also by his poetic metaphors.

This study might be categorized in the history of communication as a political frame. This article examines particularly on how Jajasan “Pembaruan” as a political agent carried out propaganda with printed material productions in the form of book and magazine publications. As an agent of trans-nationalism, through the content in the publication, Jajasan “Pembaruan” as well as being a medium in shaping the concept of identity politically and culturally through discourse politics. This research shows that the publications by Jajasan “Pembaruan” were agents of political propaganda pioneered by several young people (political activists and leftist thinkers), the Indonesian Communist Party. Thus, the productions by Jajasan “Pembaruan” were at the same time a strong foundation in providing theory, politics, and practices regarding the idea of a “new way”, especially among the cadres of the Indonesian Communist Party about Indonesian political identity. Propaganda spread through books or magazines published by Jajasan “Pembaruan” was one of the discourse efforts of “decolonialization” in spreading various communist political views. Production or printed materials by Jajasan “Pembaruan” received support in a fluid communication network between countries in the context of the cold war.

Abstract:
This article explores how the low of the popular and the high of history intersect to negotiate masculinities in the nexus of politics and war in a Swedish history magazine. It investigates the content of the magazine’s form and argues that it produces a kaleidoscopic take on the past which begs the reader to go along with the ads to buy another book, travel to one more historical site, buy a DVD or go to the movies, to turn the page, or to buy another issue of the magazine. Two articles, biographical in their outset, provide the basis for an analysis on how masculinities are negotiated by displaying political and military leaders in contradictory ways and enabling multiple entrance points for the contemporary reader and spectator. Articles on great men produce cultural imaginaries of warlords and political leaders by drawing on layers of historically contingent ways for men to act in public and private spheres and connecting late modern visual celebrity culture to the cults of fame in earlier centuries.

Abstract:
The present study starts with a theoretical and methodological discussion in an effort to approach the periodical as a composite genre formed through a range of interacting discourses and networks including translations and translators. It traces the position and role of translation and translators within the broader makeup of the periodical and its metanarrative. In light of the framework outlined in the first part, the second part elaborates on a popular, long-lasting Turkish film magazine, Yıldız [Star] (1938-1954) as a translational product and institution. The analysis of a film magazine as a case study adds further layers to the study and allows for multidisciplinary cross-fertilization and dialogue across translation, periodical, and film studies. Siting Yıldız vis-à-vis the socio-cultural and political context of the era and a large network of relations, this part reveals the substantial contribution of the translational habitus of the magazine to the construction and maintenance of its “common habitus” (Bourdieu 273; Philpotts). It also becomes evident that translation does not only contribute to the formation of the heteroglossic structure of Yıldız but also plays a significant part in shaping its metanarrative, which is highly relevant to the Turkish experience of American modernity presented by classical Hollywood films and stardom. Abstract:
Review of Black and White : John Tamihere, by John Tamihere with Helen BainA theme in the book is Tamihere's uncanny ability to survive utterances and actions that should have ended the career of almost any other politician. At the time this was true, However, in the now notorious Investigate magazine artcle in April, where he put his blockey boot into a number of powerful Labour Party colleagues, and snapped ties with a few more of his diminishing list of friends, he looks to have shattered an image of seeming invunerability.

Abstract:
Vedic and non-Vedic religions spread their ideas directly, through songs and sermons. A sense of devotion was sown by making a connection between God and Human. In particular, devotional literature is designed to convey the flexibility of the structural definitions of religions. This can be seen by examining the background of all the devotional literatures and religious epics. The reading method, which was in the state of “Telling – Listening” have been changed into the state of “Seeing – Reading”. Thus, there was a significant place for paintings and pictures in journalism. Paintings and pictures were considered as tools to impress the readers. So, the magazines had the custom of drawing up a chart for the stories. Religious institutions changed the forms of expression as time went on. All the myths and Epics of poems were made into prose stories after the advent of journalism. Stories created as a series of illustrations (Sequential Art) throughout were put forward to explain the doctrine of Devotion. “Amarchitra Katha” is a globally recognized magazine that symbolizes the Indian comic book tradition. Similarly, the magazine ‘Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam’ made a significant contribution in Tamil. All the stories published in this way have been published as pamphlets under the name of “Kathaimalar”. Thus, this Article explores the notion that 'such magazines, which are based on devotion, treat religious virtues especially from evidences of the Epics”. Further, this article goes on to point out the way in which these stories have carried the doctrine of Devotion of religious institutions to the contemporary generation.
