Full textThe research has as a main purpose to verify how Brazilian magazines as Superinter-essante, piauí, Nova Escola, Info Exame e Você S/A describe e-books, considering its char-acteristic features and its values on the journalistic field. The methodological procedures used were bibliographic and documentary research as well as content analysis. We re-viewed 58 magazines that constitute the research corpus (the entire publications of 2013) and found 34 texts that contained information about e-books. After a quantitative and qual-itative analysis of these texts we point out five main results: 1) The targeted magazines influence on the release of information about e-books is restricted; 2) The magazines have no interest in educating/encouraging the reader on how to acquire an e-book; 3) The sub-ject “e-book” is not worthy of a highlighted piece in the journal where it’s exposed; 4) The texts underline a reconfiguration of the actor’s role in the book chain.

Full textBased on the analysis of the appropriation of a media, this thesis questions the symbolic (re)configurations of professional magazines in communication. The objective is to analyze to what extent a media format (the “magazine-book”) contributes to the redefinition of a professional field by questioning its boundaries. To demonstrate that, the thesis asserts that the professional review institutes the practices of its socio-professional group, which opens the discussion on the status and function of this specialized territory. Agent of visibility, this informational space needs nonetheless to continuously legitimize itself. Using this current format of the review constitutes an attempt to overcome those tensions. It allows to leverage the vagueness of both this format function and communication professions. It also allows to establish and defend one’s positioning, as it is observed in the light of a competitive landscape analysis at the heart of the study. The support and the format become valorization tools, recognition substitutes and distinction drivers. From this perspective, this research studies an illustration, among others, of a communicational claim. The duet of knowledge and power will be transversal in this demonstration, because the observed escape is a tactical move to seize symbolic power, both in direction of the margins of the profession and its core. Ultimately, the focus of this thesis is to analyze the construction of intellectual devices, aiming at being legitimate and dominant representatives, by continuously redefining the professional and the communicational

Full textIn this PHD thesis, I examined some cultural production which allowed me to follow activities linked to Science/Chemistry school knowledge production. For that, I examined Brazilian teaching official documents, the National Curricular Parameters, some Chemistry didactic books and a scientific publication magazine (Superinteressante Magazine). The research was developed under inspiration of Cultural Studies, using theoretical support by Stuart Hall, which I tried to connect to Michel Foucault’s and Thomas Popkewitz’s thoughts to carry out discursive analysis. The analysis show the interconnections between the enunciates that are part of different speeches published in these production and indicate that themes such as health, environment, technological development and consume started to constitute the agenda, in the referred magazine, in the didactic books and in the National Curricular Parameters. This subjects legitimate and submit these themes to school teaching in the Science/Chemistry area in Basic Education. The insertion of new themes/contents indicates that there is a rupture regarding what was formally considered pertinent school contents to the teaching of Science/Chemistry. Regarding health, for example, the texts started to worry about living longer, healthier, having a better look, carrying about being agile and young, which implies living in a “democratic” dictatorship of making responsible choices regarding body care, in other words, in these cultural aspects the speech related to health care is associated to will changes of attitude in the people’s ways of living. About the environment theme, the texts highlight the importance of adding daily practices to the school contents, which is considered a prerequisite for the citizenship development to promote the relationship between the people and the environment.

Full textDrawing upon previous studies, and linking my findings to established theories, I analyze the possible relationship between the publication's content and the influence this media genre has on the social development of young women.
My research findings show that CosmoGirl's portrayal of femininity is stereotypical, patriarchal and unrealistic and that such representation perpetuates negative and destructive feelings in young women.
In my discussion, I explore possible reasons for the lack of representation of the editor's goal for the magazine within the magazine's overall discourse. I also discuss the importance of media literacy in education as a means to alter today's media, so its representation of women becomes truthful.

Based on numerous studies which have been conducted establishing a direct relationship between trans-fat consumption and high rates of cardiovascular disease, we realize the importance of this topic and its repercussion in various cultural artifacts. Therefore, the aim of this work is to investigate advertisement magazines, didactic books and labels of food products, to verify the meanings produced by these artifacts regard to trans-fat and how they produce speech in relation to food and health of the individuals. This study is based on the theoretical field of the cultural studies under a post-structuralist view, understanding that pedagogies permeating those artifacts produce ways of live and be of the individuals, demonstrating how these pedagogies modify and determine identities and subjectivities. We realize that the knowledge presented by the artifacts are produced in authorized institutions such as universities, institutes and agencies, but not all knowledge is considered valid to compose the curriculum of these artifacts, establishing some power relations in the choice of themes that emerge depending on the economic socio-cultural demand. Therefore we will understand that statements presented in advertisement magazines, didactic books and labels of food products linked to the speeches of science regulates, determines and prescribes the care that individuals should have regarding to food consumption and health.

The purpose of this thesis is to identify the structural features of the reviews elaborated by the teams of the Bravo!, Rolling Stone Brazil and Cult magazines in order to broaden the theories about the subject. The three are among the main publications aimed at covering the Brazilian cultural segment. At first, the genre took the marks of the academic segment to mass media, but acquired its own nuances over the years. There are 52 texts published by the magazines as a corpus. They presented diversified compositions, thematic contents and styles. Each publication was followed through 13 editions, which corresponds to the period of one year and one month. Concepts of authors who have worked on academic and journalistic reviews have served as the starting point for this survey. On the communication side, we consulted Coelho (2007), Marques de Melo (2003) and Piza (2013), among others. On the scientific side, we consulted Severino (2000), Maia (2007), Abreu-Tardelli, Lousada and Machado (2009), Medeiros (2009) and Didio (2013). The material was examined base on Bakhtin (2000). His theories about discourse genres were the main category of analysis used in this research, whose methodology is interpretative based on quantitative information for qualitative evaluations of the material and the results obtained. The main result is the observation that journalistic review, unlike what occurs in the university field, breaks with pre- established structures, although it is possible to say that its global order is roughly divided into introduction, development and conclusion. But the chain of ideas will depend much more on the knowledge about the focused object, on the professional experience and on the textual abilities of the reviewer than on the editorial rule. The exception occurs with one of two models used by Bravo! magazine that divided the text with explicit topics. The division presented variations according to the thematic content. In general, the compositional format brought this model closer to what is seen in the academic world, especially in the appreciation of books

With the development of mobile and cloud technologies, coupled with the rise of environmental awareness, the eBook and related industries have begun to flourish.Especially when iPad launched in 2010, it has brought more interactive eBook technologies and applications into diverse play. The interactive feature has become an important indicator of eBook reading software and services. Different from the traditional one-dimensional model of quality measurement,Professor Noriaki Kano of Japan classifies customer preferences into five categories: attractive quality, one-dimensional quality, must-be quality, indifferent quality and reverse quality. In this study, we use the Kano model to review the relationship between the interactive quality of eBook reading software and the readers’ actual needs. We comprehend the quality attribute of Kano model that eBook interactive features such as “Display Vertically”, “Display Horizontally”, and “Language Shift” are classified as. There are 25 quality attributes in the “iPad version of Master60 Magazine”. We learn from the questionnaire survey, among the 25 attributes, there are 11 classified as attractive quality, 7 as one-dimensional quality and 7 as indifferent quality. There is no reverse and must-be quality. Based on the “Quality Improvement Index” of Kano model, we use the statistical data as the reference to improve service quality. We also analyze whether the demographic variables have obviously different views on reading service quality. According to the statistical data, there are 3 reading service quality featuring obviously different views because of gender; there are 7 reading service quality featuring obviously different views because of education level.

Challenger magazine was founded in May 2004, which is a rare publication of Taiwanese comics, including comic-novels and movies. It features "Local" and "reader’s participation", and from 2004 to 2008, did not rely on governmental sponsor to maintain the operation of the magazine for four years and 2 months. Thus, this fact leads me to be interested in researching "Challenger magazine" and "Taiwanese Comics" and their relevancy. This article was written through the "Content analysis":"Challenger magazine" reflects not only "Taiwanese comic industry," the marketing path, readers, production, long-term accumulated disadvantages, but also the plight from 2004 to 2008 "Taiwan comic magazine" had faced.

Bombarded by various waves of consumer information,Taiwan has hit the road to the so-called “style society” with the trend towards aestheticization of daily lives and growing emphasis on tastes, and in the meantime the industries, while churning out products, do not forget to compete for the interpretive power and symbolic control over the media. In Taiwan, as far as cultural tastes and lifestyle modeling are concerned, the “Eslite phenomenon” shall not be ignored. With content analysis, this research probes into the editorial logic by which the Eslite Bookstore, as one of the important indicators on the map of Taiwan culture consumers’ tastes, has tried to design its style-based Eslite Book Review and Eslite Reader magazines. In the end, the researcher deliberates over some visages of bourgeois tastes shaped by Eslite and contextualizes the findings in the class struggles for culture distinction as well as the recent social-economic changes in Taiwan. As the research shows, the main editorial notion of Eslite Bookstore is to construct an orthodox and legitimized legitimate taste domain by the voices of those culturally powerful male experts. It aims to build up a consumer style that is different from the past bourgeois conspicuous consumption and offers certain symbolic repertoires for the pursuit of delicate culture and life.Proclaiming itself as with higher cultural capital, Eslite prefers to involve more cultural activities and discourses to demonstrate its superiority, and to balance practical functions with more style innovations to distinguish itself from peers. In general, Eslite Book Review and Eslite Reader maintain a consistent style that uniquely belongs to Eslite . During the period of Eslite Book Review, it stresses mainly on life attitude, aesthetic style the second; whereas, Eslite Reader puts aesthetic style on the top of life attitude. Neither in these two periods have conventional values been emphasized. Eslite skillfully takes advantage of the existing cultural capital from the academic and expert systems to polish its cultural taste, and then elegantly projects such a cultural taste onto its consumers.By doing so, it successfully attains the identification from the readership and achieves its purpose of accumulating cultural capital and transforming it into economic capital.
