Abstract:
Today the mafia are building a new landscape in the North, which is to say they are formulating spatial rules in which land is no longer a public asset. It is generating a new economy - it is fuelling new property processes through new urbanisation, sub-contracts and earth movement - by supporting ‘plans' in which increasingly more areas are being classified as for building. The reconstruction of this metamorphosis by looking at signs and traces, experiences and news stories is the premise for a new assumption of responsibility.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe Danube region in Central Europe was one of the areas where several cultures appeared before moving further or being defeated during the Migration Period in the middle of the first millennium AD. The Lombards, who crossed the Danube in 505 AD, settled in the “Tullnerfeld” where the Maria Ponsee graveyard was excavated in 1965–1972. From the historical evidence about the temporal and spatial migration of the Lombards, it was concluded that the graveyard was in use between 505 and 568 AD by three groups of migrants. We processed and dated a new set of 23 bones, found in the Maria Ponsee site. The determined 14C dates fit well in the expected time interval, though discrimination between the grave groups could not be obtained. The dates were added to the chronological sequence, recording the Migration Period in Central Europe. The sequence lead to a good correlation of the modelled and historical data (Amodel = 87.6%). The results show differentiations of the respective tribes in the pre-Lombardic period. However, transitions between the Lombard phases were rather ambiguous, indicating that the Lombards set up new settlements while only partially abandoning the already inhabited ones before 546 AD.

Abstract:
Gaetano Cattaneo (1771-1841), founder of the Numismatic Cabinet of Brera, inherited in 1815 from Giuseppe Bossi the historiographical materials that the secretary of the Brera Academy had collected with the aim to create a work dedicated to the history of Lombard art. Cattaneo also devoted himself to the project of a History of the arts and artists of the Lombard school, which never came to light, although its preparation is largely documented by his correspondence with Italian and foreign scholars, such as Cicognara, De Lazara and Passavant. A trace of Cattaneo’s work survives in an unpublished manuscript, kept in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana. In a schematic form, the document reconstructs the history of architecture in Lombardy from the Middle Ages to the sixteenth century, though it was supposed to be continued until the early nineteenth century. The information provided by Cattaneo about the origins of the different “epoche”, in which he divides the developments of Lombard architecture, as to the distinctive structural and stylistic characteristics or as to the masters and their main works offer a very interesting insight into the Milanese historiographical consciousness in the time between French domination and Restoration. The essay considers in particular the judgment on the different phases of the Middle Ages, with particular regard to the profile of Longobard architecture and the origins of the Milan Cathedral. In this case both local debates and the work of Seroux D’Agincourt are fundamental for Cattaneo. Another significant theme is the judgment on the architecture of the sixteenth century in Lombardy, which re-evaluates Leonardo, resizes Bramante and, above all, censors the protagonists of the Borromean age, from Galeazzo Alessi to Francesco Maria Richino. In this respect, the internal debate at the Brera school of architecture and the historiographical positions of Carlo Bianconi and Giuseppe Bossi played an important role, other significant latest sources such as Francesco Antonio Albuzzi and Venanzio De Pagave. The essay reports the complete edition of Cattaneo’s text according to the Ambrosian copy, which was probably made by his collaborator Carlo Zardetti.

Abstract:
From 2008 Sicily’s president was Raffaele Lombardo, leader of the Movimento per le Autonomie (MpA), a party founded by politicians who were already well established in the city of Catania and its province. In the summer of 2012 Lombardo’s government was forced to resign following an investigation that exposed the connections between the president and Mafia families in eastern Sicily. This article draws on two ethnographic studies carried out in Catania between 2009 and 2013: in describing the political behaviour and power relations between voters, local councillors and MpA executive officers, the research examined the tendency to internalise the widely understood narrative about politics and patronage in Sicily that Lombardo and his colleagues embodied. By relating ethnographic data to the legal documents showing the links between MpA leaders and Cosa Nostra bosses, I argue that social and cultural support for the party will have included support from local Mafia members.

Abstract:
One fact seems indisputable: the assault on land in Lombardy, sometimes completely illegal and sometimes authorised by law, is not countered by urban planning legislation which tends towards flexibility and streamlined procedures and has created conditions so that local municipal authorities can act mainly without complying with general plans. This blurred area constitutes an easy way in for mafia type behaviour.

Abstract:
The example of the Hospital of San Matteo in Lombard Pavia, founded right at the turn from the Visconti to the Sforza Dukes dominion in 1448, in one of the most learned cities of Lombardy, presents a very experimental assistential building for the historical period in which it was conceived. Its foundation has also been related to the Dominicans of the region, since it was the local monk Domenico de Catalogna, who took initiative to plan it and obtain the necessary permissions. On one hand, San Matteo was influenced by the exemplary hospital of Santa Maria Nova in Florence, whose foundation went back as early as 1288 and which had obviously enjoyed a strong impact already in the Late Middle Ages from the Islamic skills in building this kind of structures. In fact, Tuscany continuously developed intense trades via Pisa with the Mediterranean neighbors, the Iberian states, Syria and Egypt in the first place. But there were more influences in Pavia: the transfer from Padua of the entire scientific library to Pavia in 1388 had surely enriched the latter’s university with a wealth of information from the Orient. For these numerous reasons San Matteo can obviously not be considered separately from a high number of parallel experiences, not only in Upper Italy, but also in the rest of the Mediterranean area and especially it can not be seen as independent from the innovations of the Arab scholars. It becomes therefore inevitable to consider the addressed topics in a global and highly learned perspective.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper reports on the mineralogical characterisation of samples of wall paintings from various Roman sites in Lombardy (Italy), revealing recurrent types of stratigraphy. One of the stratigraphic samples analysed was found to be a particular kind of plaster: a three-coat work featuring two coats made of clay mud, found in the site of Santa Maria alla Porta (area of the Imperial Palace of Milan—first century CE). The fragments were analysed using optical microscopy on thin sections, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with an energy-dispersive spectrometer and infrared spectroscopy, also in non-invasive external reflection mode (7500–375 cm−1). The most interesting feature found was the finish coat made of clay mud (illite, chlorite, kaolinite and fine quartz) with a few coarse clasts and linear cavities. This clay coat was the first example ever detected in Roman Lombardy and was used in combination with a thin painted coat made of clay mud with coarse clasts together with a blue pigment (Egyptian blue) and a render coat made of lime associated with lithic clasts (sand). Our findings brought to light a particular construction technique, since in the historical sources clay is only recommended for daubing on reeds and as a render coat.

Abstract:
The prehistory of the new Duomo constructed instead of the old Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore (winter cathedral) and the Basilica of Santa Tecla (summer cathedral) remains a matter of debate. For a long time historiography attributes the main role in the renovation of the Duomo to the first Duke of Milan, Giangaleazzo Visconti. The first attempts to reassess the contribution of Giangaleazzo to the founding of the cathedral met with radical rejection. The question of the origin of the project itself (whether it was developed by Lombard or foreign engineers), as well as whether it has undergone changes in the initial phases of construction and what this may be due to, remains controversial. The article presents an analysis of the latest historiography on the theme.

Abstract:
Galeazzo Maria Sforza (1444–76), fifth Duke of Milan, set out when he acceded to power in 1466 to style himself as one of the most glorious of rulers and to make his court (in the words of the contemporary chronicler Bernardino Corio) one of ‘the most splendid in the universe’. Galeazzo, a contemporary of King Louis XI of France and Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy, entertained grand designs of turning his ducal coronet into a king's crown and transforming Lombardy into a royal realm, just as Charles the Bold sought to elevate the duchy of Burgundy to a kingdom. The two dukes, as vassals of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III, relied on that monarch's power to bestow the kingly crown; both failed tragically in the end. As part of his design to impress his contemporaries with the princely splendour of his court, in 1471 Galeazzo focused his energies particularly on the ambitious project of developing the best musical chapel in Italy. During the course of the next two years he sent emissaries to the rulers of England, Flanders, France, Naples and his neighbour Savoy, seeking to hire (or borrow, in the case of Savoy) the best singers available. His cappella grew to include more than thirty singers, making it larger than any other in Italy, even the papal chapel.

Abstract:
A tridenti zsinat utáni katolikus megújulás fontos szereplője, Borromei Szent Károly, új tabernákulumformát és tértípust hozott létre a lombard építész, Pellegrino Tibaldi közreműködésével. Pellegrinónak kulcsszerepe volt a jezsuita templomtípus megteremtésében, tervei nyomán nem csupán Milánóban, hanem Torinóban is épült templom; hatása kimutatható a bécsi domonkos templom homlokzatán is, amelynek építésze, a bissonei Giovanni Giacomo Tencalla családjának több tagja révén közvetíthette Magyarországra az itáliai hatást. Az építészek, mint például a bécsi Kirche am Hof tervezője, a luganói Filiberto Lucchese, maguk is terveztek oltárokat, vagy közreműködtek a stukkátorokkal, akik gyakran ugyanabból a régióból érkeztek, mint a tervező építész. Így fordulhatott elő, hogy a nyugat-dunántúli stukkóoltárokat általában észak-itáliai mesterek készítették a templomhomlokzatok nyomán.Summary. This study proposes to re-examine the dynamic interaction between the frontispiece of the church and the high altar. While the façade often functions as an open-air altarpiece, the altar itself is a “gate of Paradise.” Both the frontispieces and the altar structures were designed by architects, consequently, they use similar motives. Carlo Borromeo, as a key-figure of post-tridentine church reformed the sacred space and the tabernacle of the Cathedral in Milan following the designs of Pellegrino Tibaldi. Pellegrino played an eminent role in creating a new Jesuit church-type in San Fedele, Milan, which served as a model for the Corpus Christi basilica in Torino as well as for the Santa Maria Dominican Church in Vienna. The latter one was planned by Giovanni Giacomo Tencalla from Bissone (Lugano), and from the same family stemmed well-known stuccators and painters, who also worked for Hungarian commissioners. The architect of the Jesuit church Kirche am Hof in Vienna, Filiberto Lucchese, also worked for the Batthyány family, and designed altarpieces. In this way, we are able to establish a strong interaction between the altar-structure and façade, bringing considerable novelty in analysing architectural forms and design.

Abstract:
Abstract INTRODUCTION: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) represents the most lethal gynecological disease, with a 5-year relative survival rate of 46% after the diagnosis. The standard treatment of advanced EOC is based on surgery, followed by platinum (Pt)-based chemotherapy. However, the development of platinum resistant disease could occur and strongly impact on the survival of EOC patients for whom we still do not have valid therapeutic options. By using a proteomic approach followed by a bioinformatic analysis, we previously validated the role of HSP90 in the mechanism of platinum-resistance. Here, we propose a novel therapeutic strategy based on the combined pharmacologic inhibition of HSP90 and mTOR to further potentiate Pt-based chemotherapy and to revert Pt-resistance in EOC and non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) models. METHODS: TOV-112D parental and Pt-resistant cells were characterized by phosphoproteomics followed by functional analysis and proteins validation by western blot. Synergistic anti-tumor effect was evaluated in Pt-sensitive and Pt-resistant EOC and NSCLC cell lines by calculating combination indexes (CI), colony formation assay, apoptosis and DNA damage, as well as on 3D in vitro microtissues obtained by co-culturing cancer cells with normal fibroblasts and in vivo EOC and NSCLC xenograft models. RESULTS: 542 differentially phosphorylated expressed proteins were identified in Pt-resistant TOV-112D compared with parental cells, and mTOR and the transcription factor HSF1 emerged as the most enriched pathways. The up-regulation of the phosphorylated form of PDK1, AKT, mTOR and rpS6 was observed in Pt-resistant compared to parental cells. Moreover, we also demonstrated the up-regulation of the activity of HSF1 along with the elevation of its targets such as heat shock proteins HSP90, HSP70 and HSP40, crucial components of chaperone complex machinery. Interestingly, among the differentially expressed proteins, we identified the kinase DYRK2 able to phosphorylate HSF1, supporting its transactivation. Accordingly, the combination of HSP90 inhibitor ganetespib and the mTOR inhibitor temsirolimus plus cisplatin, synergistically reduced colony formation, cancer cells and microtissues cell growth in vitro by increasing DNA-damage and apoptosis and in vivo by enhancing mouse survival. Mechanistically, the triple combination treatment, impaired the proteins involved in mTOR signalling and HSF1 transactivation. Notably, all these data were confirmed in Pt-resistant NSCLC models, supporting the possibility that the same mechanism is present in different tumor types. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings identify a promising new antitumor strategy based on the combination of HSP90 and mTOR inhibitors to revert Pt-resistance that that warrant further clinical evaluation. Abstract:
Abstract Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal human malignancies: novel therapeutic approaches beyond conventional chemotherapy are still lacking and prognosis remains poor, even for resectable patients (pts). Furthermore, there is an almost complete absence of validated predictive factors. Consequently, robust biomarkers for the early diagnosis and the prognostic stratification are urgently needed in clinical practice, especially in the context of neoadjuvant and adjuvant settings. In the last years, evidence revealed the crucial role of miRNAs in cancer initiation and progression, as well as in the chemo-resistance mechanisms, suggesting their use as clinical biomarkers. Material and methods: In this pilot study, we performed a microarray analysis to characterize global miRNA expression profile from surgical tissue samples collected from 20 resected PDAC pts pooled into 4 groups according to different clinico-pathological features: nodal metastases (N+/N-) and tumor grading (G2/G3). Results: According to expression patterns, we identified, among 384 miRNAs, a significant different modulation for 11 miRNAs associated to G2 vs G3 and for 7 miRNAs in N+ vs N- disease, suggesting a possible specific signature reflecting histological grade and nodal metastasis occurrence, respectively. We focused on 2 up-regulated (miR-138-5p and miR-518-3p) and 3 down-regulated (miR-215-5p, miR-519a-3p and miR-576-5p) miRNAs in N+ pts, and on 3 up-regulated (miR-1-3p, miR-31-5p and miR-205-5p) in G3 pts, in order to verify their possible implication in the molecular changes behind tumor differentiation and spread, as well as their potential use for prognostic and therapeutic purpose. A bio-informatic analysis was also performed, using different in silico tools, to study both high affinity miRNA targets and cross-regulated pathways among the upand down-regulated miRNAs. The results identified several associated targets involved in multiple signaling pathways commonly dysregulated in cancer. Finally, BRCA1/2 and RB1 miRNAs-mediated-modulation is actually ongoing, considering the pivotal role of these genes in some PDAC pts. Conclusion: These preliminary data provide a strong rationale to further investigate miRNAs expression in larger cohorts of PDAC pts, possibly integrating validated tissue miRNAs data with circulating miRNAs, in order to identify strong (and easily accessible) potential biomarker(s) with prognostic and/or predictive significance. Background:Evidence on the efficacy of Mepolizumab (MEPO) in Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (EGPA) is scarce [1].Objectives:To assess the efficacy and safety of MEPO in real-life clinical practice. Methods:We retrospectively included patients diagnosed with EGPA and treated with MEPO (100 or 300 mg/month). MEPO efficacy was evaluated in the first 12 months in terms of systemic disease and asthma control. The occurrence of any adverse event (AE) was recorded.Results:142 patients were included (38% males; median age 46.4 (IQR 36.7-54.4); 110 and 32 on MEPO 100 and 300 mg/month, respectively). General, ear-nose-throat, pulmonary, and neurological symptoms significantly decreased during treatment (table 1). MEPO accounted for a significant reduction in the BVAS (figure 1) and for a steroid sparing effect (figure 2). The proportion of patients with asthma attacks decreased by 90% at 12 months compared to t0, and asthma-related emergency accesses dropped from 17.4% to 2.3%. Abstract:
Abstract Background - Physical distancing for COVID-19 led to decreased in-person patient follow up assessments and delayed imaging appointments. Herein we describe for the first time the impact of delays in diagnostic investigations of patients with an history of early-stage breast cancer (BC) in the largest public cancer center of Lombardy, the Italian region most affected by the pandemic. Methods - This single-institution retrospective study included three observational periods. The first pandemic peak period (March-April 2020) corresponding to the interruption of follow up imaging; the post-peak period (May-December 2020); the pre-pandemic period represented by the five previous years (January 2015- December 2019) as control. The flow of diagnostic activities was compared among the different years. Moreover, the number and characteristics of recurrent BC cases (rBC) diagnosed in the post-peak period were compared to the figures observed in pre-pandemic years, when imaging was regularly carried out, using descriptive statistics. A further comparison was performed between the characteristics of scheduled and delayed rBC diagnosed after the first peak. Results - During the first pandemic peak, diagnostic investigations declined by 81.2% (from 1032 in January-February to 194 in March-April), a drop which was not identified in the same period of the pre-pandemic years, before rebounding to 1065 in May-June, 832 July-August (reflecting the summer physiological drop), 1334 September-October, and 879 November-December. The average number of rBC cases of 16 (range 12-25) in March-April of the pre-pandemic period declined to a value as low as 4 during the first pandemic peak. Thereafter, the number of rBC cases began a steady increase, until reaching a total of 27 in September-October 2020, almost doubling the mean of 14.8 (range 11-21) achieved in the corresponding months of 2015-2019. As a result, the absolute number of rBC cases was 76 in 2020 and on average 78.4 (range 70 - 95) in pre-pandemic years, and the rBC proportion of 1.42% (76/5336; 95% exact confidence interval, CI: 1.12-1.78%) in 2020 was slightly higher than the average proportion of 1.26% of the five previous years, though the latter being well included in the CI of the 2020 proportion. No difference in primary tumor presentation and age at initial diagnosis was found among recurrent patients before and after the pandemic. Of the rBC cases reported during 2020, 10 were from 513 patients with postponed follow up who were finally diagnosed between September-December. As compared to patients on schedule, delayed rBC cases did not present with ductal carcinoma in situ, and reported a median tumor size of 18 mm (range 4.3-90 mm), which was 20% higher than the median of 15 mm (3.1-34) observed for scheduled patients. Distribution of luminal-like, triple negative and HER2-overexpressing BC subtypes among evaluable rBC cases was 75%, 12.5%, 12.5% in scheduled and 66%, 11% and 22% in delayed cases, respectively. Conclusions - Our data showed a slight decrease in the absolute number of rBC during 2020 despite a rebound of examinations, and an increased size of invasive recurrence following the 2-month stop of the first pandemic peak. The full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on recurrent cancer diagnosis will be known when national population-based data become available in the coming years. Abstract:
This article discusses the relationship between the intensification of teachers’ labour and health of professors. The data obtained are based on research that had for object the work of post-graduation programs professors in a public university. The qualitative research, theoretically and methodologically grounded by historical-dialectical materialism, used interviews as the main instrument of data collection. For that, were interviewed 11 professors from two post-graduation programs of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), in the period from 2010 to 2012, namely PPGEO and PPGEcoEvol, the programs that achieved concept six in the CAPES evaluation. The present research is justified by the observation of the profound transformations that occurred not only in higher education, but also in Brazilian post-graduation, especially after the State Reform of the 1990s. The new requirements have improved over time and have culminated in the increase of the evaluation demands made by the agencies of promotion of research, which unfold in intensification of labour. The report of professors interviewed showed a series of physical and psychological symptoms in all professors, either due to lack of rest, work overload or difficulty in handling the demands of academic and administrative work linked to post-graduation studies. Abstract:
С. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The political and social context of the Lombard enlightenment. The dawn of the Lombard enlightenment in the 1760’s was coincidental with the second and more radical wave of Habsburg reforms in the State of Milan, beginning with the adoption on 1st January 1760 of the new fiscal system based on the cadastral survey. In the following decade, new foundations were laid for the relationships between Church and State, a thorough overhaul of legislation and the judiciary was envisaged, new government agencies were established (prominent among them the Supreme Economic Council, chaired by Gian Rinaldo Carli and including Pietro Verri as a councillor), a new and competent bureaucracy replaced patrician rule, and State control was introduced over education, public health, and welfare. Earlier reforms, under Gianluca Pallavicini as plenipotentiary minister, had been largely confined to finance and administration; now the declared goal was public happiness, as described in Lodovico Muratori’s last work. At the same time, political power was decisively shifted from the Milan government to Vienna, where an Italian Department under chancellor Kaunitz’s supervision replaced the old and lethargic Italian Council. Another factor for change was the Seven Years’ War, which proved a hard test for the Austrian Monarchy and thus opened the way to further adjustments of the State machinery both at the centre and in the periphery. Moreover, the diplomatic revolution leading to a rapprochement with Bourbon France had the effect of neutralizing the Italian peninsula, thus making governments more confident and secure in adopting long-range reform policies. Compared with Naples or Florence, Milan was slower in opening itself to the currents of thought radiating from France and to a lesser extent from Britain in the age between Montesquieu’s Esprit des Lois and Rousseau’s Contrat social and Nouvelle Éloise. But when it did, it immediately established itself as one of the foremost European centres of the enlightenment, especially in the fields of criminal law and economic science. A peculiar feature of the Milanese experience, which lasted throughout Maria Theresa’s reign, was the close collaboration of leading intellectuals, such as Pietro Verri, Cesare Beccaria and Giuseppe Parini, with the Habsburg government.

Here we present an overview of the literature on the effect of dietary/exercise-based programs on loss of different components of body mass. We also discuss gain or lack of loss of lean mass in view of muscle quality maintenance, which is an important aspect to consider when employing weight-loss strategies to tackle obesity. By comparing results obtained in participants with mild to severe obesity with those obtained in lean participants, we highlight variations in the success of these interventions. Furthermore, we briefly address the observation that although certain interventions may not always affect body composition they can nevertheless ameliorate co-morbidities (insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). Based on what is currently known, in this narrative review we include data from human and animal studies related to the process of unravelling the mechanisms underlying conservation of functional muscle mass.

Edoardo Tresoldi. "Edoardo Tresoldi and the heteronomy of architecture." TECHNE - Journal of Technology for Architecture and Environment, May 26, 2021, 37–43. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/techne-11000.

Abstract:
The Heteronomy of architecture «is understood as the condition to be pursued if one sets one’s goal of producing buildings that belong to one’s own time, to the complex interweaving of values and needs that characterise it, to the place where they arise»1. Heteronomy in architecture allows us to break the boundaries still linked to the concept of the now obsolete scientific sector. The breaking of these boundaries makes a trans-disciplinary contribution possible and consequently leads us to having a transversal vision. One of the people who recently successfully pursued the road of the Heteronomy of architecture and art through a borderline path is Edoardo Tresoldi, an Italian sculptor who «investigates the poetics of the dialogue between man and landscape using architectural language as an expressive tool and key to reading space». The artist plays with the transparency of the metal mesh to transcend the space-time dimension and narrate a dialogue between Art and World, a visual synthesis that reveals itself in the fading of the physical limits of his works2. Five themes were taken into consideration to address the issue of the heteronomy of architecture with the Sculptor Tresoldi. The first one concerns the PLACE, because architecture, as materially utilitarian, is completely conditioned by the material and immaterial context of which it is part. Tresoldi’s works, in the sense of public art, are to be considered the expression of a heteronomous discipline. In fact, his work is strongly linked to this concept already in the initial choice of material and in the desire to express transparency by encountering paths, languages and transversal dialogues between the elements of the work and those of the landscape. «Inserting an element within a context builds relationships and intertwining dynamics that dialogue in a game of cross-references. The physical elements reconnect us to the archetypes we have built in our experiential journey and then become cultural. The moment we see a tree, for example, the relationship between us and the tree is the one we have built by coming into contact with trees in our lives. Automatically the tree, as well as a house, the sky or other basic elements is already an experience that determines a sort of automatism in relating to that or any other element already experienced. Then there are other elements that are part of our cultural heritage, which preserve and hold within themselves different languages». Working with archaeology, Tresoldi associated the sacredness of the classical language with the transparency and elements of the landscape, constructing images, languages and narratives of the surrounding space. For the sculptor, the Lombardy farmsteads have had an important relevance in the development of his sensitivity to the landscape. Places that at a young age escaped from his everyday life, the abandoned farmhouses are ruins full of poetry characterized by a dimension of transience today. They are the places that inspire the artist because it is here that anyone can go and allow themselves a moment of suspension with themselves and with the place. The second theme tackled is the PROJECT, understood as an action of prefiguration, of casting ahead, beyond cultural, social and historical influences. According to Tresoldi, an author can be compared to an organism that absorbs certain concepts, lives them and finally releases them through the creative act. When the artist finds himself creating a work, he prefers to go to the place to try to intercept the dynamics of the place in which he can find himself and express himself. When he connects with a place and sees the key to intercept certain elements, he lives this process in a partially selfish way, while in the phase of elaboration of the installation the artist expresses himself through recognizable languages common to all. From here the goal is to intercept and work with simple archetypes that make his works as direct as possible: «the process is similar to that of composing a love song that, most of the time, is written by the author in a specific moment lived with a specific person. In that case, the experience is extremely personal but the moment it is told, it becomes a choral experience». A project is therefore nothing more than a work that can build, transcend, or transport from an intimate experience to a collective one. The sculptor also argues that as human beings we construct our knowledge based on personal experiences and we learn about hate, love or a range of feelings often through the same experiences. «Even just talking as human beings we possess a common alphabet that allows us to structure a series of collective experiences. All of this is the synthesis that allows us to connect deeply with what is around us». Beginning with “Opera”, Tresoldi’s latest installation consisting of a colonnade of forty-six wire mesh elements up to eight meters high, located in Reggio Calabria, the third theme can be introduced: TIME. Tresoldi’s forty-six columns, according to the architect Maria Pilar Vettori, recall the “Danteum” project by Giuseppe Terragni and Pietro Lingeri designed in 1939 (never built) and the fresco present in “Sala del Bacio” of Bertoja, realized between 1570 and 1573, in Parma (where Terragni did his military service). Between these three works there seems to be an interweaving, a kind of mechanism of trace, of memory, as if there is a kind continuity in the creative process influenced by the times and by innovation. On this proposal of continuity Tresoldi argues that when an artist no longer works for references, but for necessity of expression, it becomes fascinating to imagine that both he and Terragni, as well as Bertoja, felt the need to use the column element and transparency to tell their essential concept linked to their own time and perception. His choice to use columns in Reggio Calabria is linked to the idea of being able to mark that area with a transparent colonnade that was an open space of crossing and that created perspective corridors both towards the sea and towards the sky: this was for Tresoldi the best way to tell the dimension of the Strait of Messina. «The use of the column as an element refers to a classical archetype and as such is recognized as a pure element for the narrative of a place, of an architectural space». By working with transparency, the sculptor has tried to translate his idea into the language of contemporaneity. This pure relationship with the elements is also what allows us to understand how the meanings of certain archetypes (the column, transparency) have evolved over time. Time, in Tresoldi, has made his idea of transparency change, transforming it into the concept of Absent Matter. Starting from a concept, from an instinct towards a material, one can see how his work on absence has transformed over time. Although today many people associate his work with wireframe drawings, in reality Tresoldi’s work arises from a strongly real, material, analogue action. In fact, his work is based on “sewing” the net, an act that physically would have been conceivable even in the past. However, in ‘65, for example, nobody could have connected it to the wireframe. So, his work, compared to that of Terragni and Bertoja, has also been added to the idea of virtual space constructed in the last twenty years. In addition to this, Tresoldi said that he realized that most of the time he himself does not decide the themes of a work, but they are built by instinct, then translated into a story. For example, when at the beginning of his career he created human figures that lived in the landscape, while building a storytelling around them, these were often defined by the newspapers as “Tresoldi’s fanstasms”. Even if the work had a concept behind it, it was often summarized with this expression. In the image of transparency, the figure of the ghost and the discourse of absence are already intrinsic. This is due, in part, to the fact that it is a visual construction derived from the cinematic world, where a transparent image was used to render the idea of ghosts. Therefore, the evolution of the visual narrative of man has led to narrate the absence through transparency. All this implies that in the moment in which codes are used, images already narrate a value, a story that can vary in time. Another theme, already introduced by transparency, is the one related to MATTER and to Tresoldi’s relationship with materiality, with constructability, with the body, with gravity and with the technical part that approaches the artistic one. The use of the net as an instrument is due to the desire to represent transparency by working on the tensions of the structure. The first works, as stated by the sculptor, were all drawn by hand and built starting from the roll of wire mesh, as if it were a puzzle in which the individual elements were drawn, made, cut and assembled. Over time, however, one learns to know a material and therefore to know, without scientific calculations, where problems of static tightness may arise. In this way, experience has made Tresoldi learn real know-how. However, for large projects it is necessary to interface with engineers for a specific and scientific analysis of the works. It follows that behind each work there is a process in which the artist draws the idea that will subsequently be realized by the team and where the choral action often involves a contamination of languages; a path, an ancestral experience. In this way Tresoldi decides to remain in the artistic dimension linked to the sensibility and the poetics of meeting places rather than flowing into the architectural sphere. Therefore, the building site is no longer intended as a place of work but becomes a means by which to know the place itself, implying a social responsibility linked to the presence of a community that revolves around it. In fact, the sculptor’s artistic training, coming from the world of film set design, still influences his approach characterized by a dimension of collective work in which everyone is part of a process that will be carried out by the “community”. It is precisely from the concept of community and the sculptor’s desire to make a construction site such that his desire to give life, together with YAC - Young Architects Competitions, to TRAC - Tresoldi Academy, a school where, moving from the design phase to the execution phase, a construction is built within a construction site that is a fundamental element of the experience itself, was created. In this case, the construction site is not intended only as a place of construction but as an opportunity in which the complexity of a work is perceived by noting how much what has been imagined really corresponds to reality. Theory must therefore be accompanied by practice, since if a student is given responsibility, he or she becomes an integral part of what is being built and of the project. Designing something in a given place and then building it also allows for the consolidation of “points in the place” that are part of the training experience of designing, understanding and realizing. Training also, according to Tresoldi, should not stop at designers but should concern all stakeholders in the cultural sphere. «In artistic training, the practical approach to the works and experiencing their realization at 360° is also fundamental. For this reason, the goal of TRAC is also to make young people experience all the phases of the installation. The fact that they themselves realize a work from design to production also means letting them deal with all the related needs: from business trips to finding construction services». Another goal of TRAC - Tresoldi Academy is that of a return to the rituality of the past, to the secular sacredness of certain moments lived on site linked to the love of things that, even today, are considered a foundation of both making art and making architecture. According to Tresoldi, a perfect example of training in the field concerns festivals as events capable of creating temporary dimensions and, at the same time, of putting into action an experimentation of a futuristic project. In fact, before building a permanent work, the festival allows to have an effect on the temporary not only in terms of structure but also at the level of imaginable society: «When for a week several people inhabit a place, that place becomes a city. From this point of view, festivals are a very formative experience where practice manages to have – compared to theory – a gap that is the dirt of humanity». The last topic discussed is WHAT’S NEXT, Tresoldi’s future projects. As he himself announced, another project to which he is dedicating himself is STUDIO STUDIO STUDIO. His team is in fact formed, to this day, by different departments – from design to management to communication – that have been formed through the realization of his artistic projects. The idea is to enlarge this structure to the works of other authors so that they can develop and realize large-scale projects in order to enter the world of public works.
