Abstract:
We applied remote sensing and aerial photographic techniques to a study of the Mae Hong Son Fault (MHSF), located in the Mae Hong Son region, northern Thailand. Several fault lines are recognized in the region, trending mainly NE–SW, NW–SE, and N–S. The main morphotectonic landforms associated with the MHSF are fault scarps, offset streams, linear valleys, triangular facets, offset ridge crests, hot springs, and linear mountain fronts. A trench, a quarry, and a road cut in Caenozoic strata were used to analyze fault geometries in the area. We identified eight paleoearthquake events from trenching, quarry, and road-cut data, and from optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) dating. The OSL and TL ages of the events are: (1) 78,000 yr BP; (2) 68,000 yr BP; (3) 58,000 yr BP; (4) 48,000 yr BP; (5) 38,000 yr BP; (6) 28,000 yr BP; (7) 18,000 yr BP; and (8) 8,000 yr BP. The recurrence interval of seismic events on the MHSF appears to be ca. 10,000 years, and the slip rate was estimated as ca. 0.03–0.13 mm/yr. There is a low possibility of a large earthquake on the MHSF in the near future.

Abstract:
Meteorological parameters play an important role in determining the prevalence of ambient particulate matter (PM) in the upper north of Thailand. Mae Hong Son is a province located in this region and which borders Myanmar. This study aimed to determine the relationships between meteorological parameters and ambient concentrations of particulate matter less than 10 µm in diameter (PM10) in Mae Hong Son. Parameters were measured at an air quality monitoring station, and consisted of PM10, carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), and meteorological factors, including temperature, rainfall, pressure, wind speed, wind direction, and relative humidity (RH). Nine years (2009–2017) of pollution and climate data obtained from the Thai Pollution Control Department (PCD) were used for analysis. The results of this study indicate that PM10 is influenced by meteorological parameters; high concentration occurred during the dry season and northeastern monsoon seasons. Maximum concentrations were always observed in March. The PM10 concentrations were significantly related to CO and O3 concentrations and to RH, giving correlation coefficients of 0.73, 0.39, and −0.37, respectively (p-value < 0.001). Additionally, the hourly PM10 concentration fluctuated within each day. In general, it was found that the reporting of daily concentrations might be best suited to public announcements and presentations. Hourly concentrations are recommended for public declarations that might be useful for warning citizens and organizations about air pollution. Our findings could be used to improve the understanding of PM10 concentration patterns in Mae Hong Son and provide information to better air pollution measures and establish a warning system for the province.

Abstract:
A new cave-dwelling species of Cyrtodactylus Gray is described from Mae Hong Son Province in northern Thailand. The new species, C. erythrops sp. nov., is characterized by its moderate size (snout-vent length to at least 78 mm), relatively large, closely-spaced, flattened tubercles in 18–20 irregular rows at midbody, low number of ventral scales across midbody (28), absence of precloacal groove, presence of precloacal and femoral pores separated by a diastema, broad subcaudal plates, and dorsal pattern of dark spots and blotches. It is the fifth species of cave-dwelling Cyrtodactylus recorded from Thailand and its discovery adds to the mounting evidence that this genus exhibits unprecedented levels of localized endemism throughout tropical Southeast Asia.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Desbutyl-benflumetol (DBB) is a novel antimalarial compound closely related to benflumetol (lumefantrine), of which it is a putative metabolite. The in vitro response of Plasmodium falciparum to DBB was studied in Mae Hong Son and Mae Sot, in northwest Thailand, in 1997 and 1998. In total, 155 fresh isolates were successfully tested using the World Health Organization standard in vitro microtest system (Mark II). The mean 50% effective concentration (EC50) and 90% effective concentration of DBB were 6.36 and 31.09 nmol/liter, respectively. The comparison of the activity of DBB and benflumetol yielded a highly significant potency ratio of 4.52, corresponding to a more than four times higher efficacy of DBB. A considerable potency difference was found between isolates from Mae Hong Son and those from Mae Sot, reflecting lesser sensitivity in the area with marked resistance to mefloquine and quinine. This observation is also supported by a highly significant activity correlation with benflumetol (P < 0.001) and to a similar degree with mefloquine (P < 0.001), reflecting a close relationship of DBB with the class II aryl amino alcohol blood schizontocides. A less distinct association was also found with artemisinin, which was significant only at the EC50 level, and there was no correlation at all with chloroquine. DBB is a promising antimalarial compound that merits further investigation in order to define its practical therapeutic potential.

Pethleart, Aree. "Importance of asymptomatic malaria and its infectivity to Anopheles mosquitoes in Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand." Thesis, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London), 2002. http://researchonline.lshtm.ac.uk/834548/.

Abstract:
This study aimed to record the prevalence of asymptomatic malaria and the development of malaria parasites in laboratory-bred Anopheles minimus mosquitoes fed on the blood of people with or without malaria symptoms. The intention was to identify where the main reservoir of infection was maintained. The study was conducted in three cantons in Muang district, Mae Hong Son Province, Northwest Thailand. Chapter 3 describes studies of epidemiology of malaria in this area, based on two cross-sectional surveys of populations in villages and people who visited a malaria clinic. A questionnaire was conducted in the local languages by trained interviewers, to identify people suffering from fever. The parasite prevalence was 0.7% of all the surveyed populations. The prevalence of slide positivity among males was significantly higher than females. All those with positive slides who had a body temperature >37.4°C reported fever. Some without measured body temperature >37.4°C also reported fever. Those people may have had fever a few hours previously. Contrary to expectation P. falciparum infections did not cause fever more than P. vivax infections. The prevalence of asymptomatic malaria was 47.1 % among those who were slide positive which corresponded to about 0.5% of the interviewed population. From the Clinic, 101 patients with malaria infection were interviewed. More than half of the infections had high parasitaemia. When people thought they had malaria, the malaria clinic and the hospital facilities were most commonly used, with the largest number going to the Clinic. A significantly higher malaria prevalence was found in the people who reported not having any form of mosquito protection. More than 99% stated that they owned mosquito nets, but only 44% of the nets had been treated with insecticide. 2 Chapter 4 reports a study of the infectiousness of malaria patients to An. minimus. Direct feedings were conducted on adults >15 years old and who gave their consent. All of these people had blood slides positive for P. falciparum or P. vivax and had been located from the village surveys (n = 28) or the Clinic (n = 92). After feeding, the mosquitoes were held for 7-9 days and then dissected and examined for oocysts. Feeding on about 40% of human subjects yielded some mosquitoes with oocysts. There was a significantly lower probability of infection with P. falciparum than P. vivax. Symptomatic or non-symptomatic people with parasites were equally able to infect mosquitoes. There was a significant association of probability of mosquito infection with presence of observable gametocytes, but there were some individuals without observable gametocytes who infected mosquitoes. PCR on 58 subjects with negative slides showed that 30% were positive for P. falciparum, but none yielded oocysts after mosquito feeding. PCR was also used to identify the parasite species in the mosquito's gut. The results revealed that none of the donors with visible P. falciparum infections carried cryptic P. vivax infections which could yield P. vivax positivity in mosquitoes fed on them. The occurrence of some cases with undetectable gametocytes who could infect mosquitoes suggests the question "Do gametocytes selectively enter the mosquito's proboscis during blood feeding"? However, a small study showed that the gametocyte density in the mosquito blood meals did not differ significant from that in the corresponding finger pricks, indicating that gametocytes do not selectively enter a mosquito's proboscis. The occurrence in some cases of high oocyst counts in mosquitoes fed on blood with no observable gametocytes remains unexplained. From the results, on infection of mosquitoes by different categories of people an attempt was made to estimate the number of people in the catchment area of the Clinic who were reservoirs of infection. On the basis of the number of patients visiting the Clinic per day, it was concluded that the main reservoir of infection for mosquitoes was not in patients feeling ill enough to be motivated to come to the Clinic. The present study suggests that directing anti-gametocyte drugs to all feverish 3 patients in the villages could have a major impact on the reservoir of infection. However, in Thailand there have not yet been reports on the infectivity of the gametocytes in mosquitoes after treatment of patients with gametocytocidal drugs (e. g. primaquine or artesunate). Such studies are strongly recommended

This dissertation presents the analysis of lithic assemblages that have been unearthed from the late Pleistocene layers 3 to 10 of Tham Lod Rockshelter (excavation area 2, sectors S20W10 & S21W10). This limestone-karstic rock shelter is situated in Pang Mapha district of Mae Hong Son Province, north-western Thailand. On the lines of the research questions outlined by of The Highland Archeological Project, this site was excavated from 2002 to 2006 under the direction of R. Shoocongdej. The radiometric analyses provided dates ranging from late Pleistocene (35 ka, TL, which is one of the oldest dates for a prehistoric site in this region) to late Holocene (3000 years BP). The lithic and faunal remains occur in thousands throughout the stratigraphic sequence; ceramics and metal items appear in the upper layer (Holocene). Noteworthy are the few human burials in the late Pleistocene layers (13 ka BP). Typical sumatraliths, the signature of the Hoabinhian technical tradition, start appearing in the lower layers, yet seem to be absent in the very bottom layer 10; they become conspicuous in the layer 4 (around 24-20 ka). However, they decrease in proportion in the last Pleistocene layer 3 to the benefit of choppers. They are associated with partial sumatraliths (not shaped all around), approximately equally frequent. Conversely, core tools (>100 mm) are almost exclusively choppers in lower layers 10 to 8. The scrapers are the major type among the small tools (<100 mm) and their frequency is quite constant throughout the stratigraphy. They are mostly shaped on broken cobbles, except in the layer 10 where the very few ones are on flake or fragment. Other small tools like denticulates, pointed tools and “atypical small tools” are not frequent in the studied material.

Abstract:
The essential point of this dissertation is to study the narration of Song society mental universes through a selection of texts taken from the Yijian zhi of Hong Mai (1123-1202), and which concern divination. Through this study, I try to analyze different aspects of the interpretation of mantic signs, and to understand every context in which a consultation might happen. I will also demonstrate how it is possible to divide diviners between other aspects of their practice. Eventually, I will present the conceptions that the authour might have about destiny through the reading of thoses anecdotes. Many questions arise in this study; for instance, does the author have his own particular point of view when he is writing his anecdotes? Are we facing texts that are only a pure neutral recording, or does the author invite us to a more profound and subtle reading? The study of those stories will show us why the authour is not just a listener, but brings also a type of commentary on his society through the anecdotes he writes

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay was to contribute to an improvement in knowledge of the experiences of a selection of heterosexual men regarding female violence in intimate partner relationships and its consequences. In order to fulfill this purpose we used semi structured interviews which were recorded, transcribed, coded and thereafter analyzed using previous research in this field, masculinity theory, the theory of the ideal victim and hermeneutics. The central findings in our study were that the men experienced anxiety, fear, thoughts of harming themselves, guilt and shame as results of the violence. The shame was linked to their male identity. They also experienced a lack of willingness and ability to help from government agencies. These findings indicated, among other things, that government agencies need to improve their strategies in order to help men who are victims of violence from a female partner.

Abstract:
The study aims to illustrate how women victims of male violence in intimate relationships are treated during the legal process and with professional perspective describe what women’s experiences considered to be in the legal process. The study also aims to draw attention to the interventions for abused women during the legal process. The results are based on interviews with professionals in the justice system, and on observations in the courtroom. Overall our results show that abused women are in need of a great quantity of help and support before, during and after the negotiation. The legal process is very stressful for the women. In conclusion, we believe that the social services should take greater responsibility for abused women during the legal process and provide support to women so that they are able to get through the legal process without a great deal of emotional damage.

Ismail, Jinranai. "Ethnic Tourism and the Kayan Long-Neck Tribe in Mae Hong Son, Thailand." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/71510.

Full text
Abstract:
The long-neck Kayans have long been subjected to scrutiny by both Thai and foreign writers. This study traces the historical existence of the Kayans in Burma and their status as refugees within Thailand. Since the arrival of the first group of Kayans in late 1984, this tribe have been of interest to the provincial government of Mae Hong Son, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, NGOs and tourism developers. All of these groups, in one way or another, claim to be protecting the interest of the Kayans. This thesis investigates the validity of claims that Kayan interests are being protected. It further questions the government’s move to centralise the Kayans into one settlement at Huay Pu Kaeng. I argue that the Kayan race is the most marginal beneficiary of the Kayan ethnic tourism and illustrate how their vulnerability has been exploited both by government agencies and tourism developers.

O'Meara, Dayne. "Disciplining the Heart: Love, School, and Growing Up Karen in Mae Hong Son." Phd thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/206761.

Full text
Abstract:
The heart (jai) is a powerful metaphor in Thai language. To succeed at school, students in Thailand must tangjai rian. This means they must possess the right discipline, attitude, and ability to set their hearts toward learning and studying. This thesis documents the situated nuances of this everyday Thai concept as it is deployed in the context of a government school, within an upland Sgaw Karen community. Educational success is highly valued as cultural capital at the margins of Thai society, even while the institution of the school actively subjectifies upland groups as internal others, referred to in Thai as chao khao (hill tribes). As tangjai rian is presented as a potential path out of poverty, Karen teachers and parents are highly invested in policing students' adherence to it as a moral ideal. This ethnography of a Thai government school analyses how Karen students engage with adult expectations of childhood to renegotiate the limits of tangjai rian and the meaning attached to one's time at school. As Karen students reach adolescence and begin to pursue romance, their status as children who can tangjai rian is threatened. Inference of sexual activity signals a failure to tangjai rian, as focusing on schoolwork is framed by adults as impossible alongside a sexual relationship. This represents a moral failure, as tangjai rian is framed as an expression of love and gratitude towards teachers and parents both. At the heart of the thesis lies the extended case study of a female student who was expelled due to her alleged sexual activity. This exceptional event is used as an entry point to the broader moral discourse about love and school that took place during the Thai school year of 2017. Drawing on social practice theory, this thesis considers how adolescent students reconcile their romantic and educational pursuits through 'serious play' in 'figured worlds'. Students jointly author their own moral worlds where they can playfully enact their own understandings of ideas like tangjai rian according to new rules. The dominant figured world of the school frames teenage romance as only acceptable if it serves to directly support a student's efforts to tangjai rian. The key difference in the figured worlds of adolescent students is that romance and tangjai rian are both framed as integral features of the school experience alongside one another. Schooling in Thailand is an institutional project of ethnonational belonging in which Karen students are set up to fail. At the same time as they learn what Thainess looks like, Karen students are reminded that its embodiment is unattainable for those readily identifiable as belonging to a 'hill tribe'. By complementing their endeavours to tangjai rian with the pursuit of love, the secondary students at this school add value to their experience of an institution that, realistically, will deliver its promised outcomes to a very small number of those who pass through it. Successfully pursuing love and education simultaneously is made possible by the cultural innovations of children's serious play.

Armido Studer of Wilhems-University Münster effected (Chem. Commun. 2012, 48, 5190) the enantioselective conjugate addition of 2 to 1, leading to the cyclopropane 3. Karl Anker Jørgensen of Aarhus University devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 2543) a route to cyclobutanes based on the enantioselective addition of 5 to the nitroalkene 4. Jose L. Vicario of the Universidad del País Vasco reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 4104) a similar procedure. Benjamin List of the Max-Planck-Institute Mülheim epoxidized (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2012, 354, 1701) cyclopentenones such as 7 with high ee. Lutz H. Gade of the Universität Heidelberg observed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 2946) high ee in the benzylation of 9. Cheng Ma of Zhejiang University formylated (J. Org. Chem. 2012, 77, 2959) cyclopentanone, then condensed the resulting aldehyde 12 with 13 to give 14. Hao Xu of Georgia State University cyclized (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 858) 15 to the cyclopentenone 16. (+)-Rosephilin 19 inhibits several phosphatases. Bernard L. Flynn of Monash University prepared (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 1740) the carbocyclic core of 19 by cyclizing 17 to the cyclopentenone 18. Masanori Yoshida of Hokkaido University designed (J. Org. Abstract:
An efficient method for allylation of a sterically hindered alcohol in the presence of base-sensitive functionality (cf. 1 to 2) has been developed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2012, 53, 1319) by Richard B. Silverman at Northwestern University. Mark S. Taylor at the University of Toronto found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 8260) that borinic acid 4 catalyzed the monofunctionalization of diols and carbohydrates such as 3. The selective functionalization of unprotected peptides can be challenging, but Man-Kin Wong at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Chi-Ming Che at the University of Hong Kong have shown (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 2589) that selective N-terminal functionalization can be achieved with the alkynyl ketene 7, which allows for subsequent derivitization of the acylated products (e.g., 8) via click reactions with azides. To formylate amines such as morpholine (9), an N-heterocyclic carbene (e.g., 10) catalyzed procedure that utilizes CO2 and polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) has been developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 2934) by Thibault Cantat at the CEA in France. For the protection of acyclic amino acid derivatives, Eiji Tayama at Niigata University has reported (Tetrahedron Lett. 2012, 53, 1373) a new protecting group, 1,2-dimethoxy-4,5-dimethylene, that is installed by double alkylation and can be removed with, for example, ethyl chloroformate to produce the corresponding carbamate (e.g., 12 to 13). As far as protecting groups go, ethers can be especially challenging to remove; however, a new procedure for the oxidative cleavage of glycol ethers, including dioxane, has been developed (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 3218) by Zhong-Quan Liu at Lanzhou University. This copper-catalyzed procedure employs carboxylic acids such as 14 and produces alkoxymethoxy esters 15. The cleavage of unactivated ethers such as dibutyl ether as a means to alkylate sulfonamides (cf. 16) has been reported (Synlett 2012, 595) by Wei Zeng at South China University of Technology. Protecting groups that are thermally labile offer the ability to achieve deprotection without added reagents. A new thermolabile protecting group has been developed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2012, 53, 666) by Marcin K. Chmielewski at the Polish Academy of Sciences based on 2-pyridyl-N-(2,4-difluorobenzyl)aminoethyl carbonates.

Abstract:
My first direct encounter with feng-shui came soon after I arrived in Hong Kong in 1965. A new hospital was being built on a hill overlooking Castle Peak Bay, where my family and I lived. The hospital foundations cut deep into the slope. Several old peasants told me, “This is very bad; the construction has cut the dragon’s pulse.” I learned that the hill had a dragon in it, whose blood circulation had been cut by the foundation trench. This seemed strange to me. I noted it down as a fascinating local belief, and thought no more of it. Soon afterward, a typhoon dumped two feet of rain on Hong Kong within a few days. The oversteepened, undercut slope failed, and a torrent of mud descended, washing out the hospital foundations and burying a house or two at the hill foot. “See?” said my friends. “This is what happens when you cut the dragon’s pulse.” A light went on in my head. The Chinese peasants, pragmatic to the core, had described the phenomenon in terms strange to me; but the phenomenon they described was perfectly real. I reflected that the geologists’ terms “oversteepening” and “slope failure” were not much more empirically verifiable than the dragon. Any Chinese peasant would find them even stranger than I had found that eminent serpent, since I had already learned from reading that ancient Chinese saw dragons in the scaly, ridged contours of mountain ranges. As time went on, I learned that I had found more than a different way of talking about obvious facts. Chinese site planning seemed more and more rational. I learned that villages protected the groves of trees that ringed them, because trees attract good influences and also provide shade, firewood, fruit, leafmold, timber, and other goods. I learned that roads to villages were made crooked to discourage evil beings—and that the evil beings included not only demons but also soldiers, government officials, and (other) bandits.

Benjamin List of the Max Planck Institute, Mülheim devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 6070) a chiral primary amine salt that catalyzed the enantioselective epoxidation of cyclohexenone 1 . Larger ring and alkyl-substituted enones are also epoxidized with high ee. Three- and four-membered rings are versatile intermediates for further transformation. Tsutomu Katsuki of Kyushu University developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 2450) an elegant Al(salalen) catalyst for the enantioselective Simmons-Smith cyclopropanation of allylic alcohols such as 3. Kazuaki Ishihara of Nagoya University found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 8930) chiral amine salts that effected enantioselective 2+2 cycloaddition of α-acyloxyacroleins such as 5 to alkenes to give the cyclobutane 7 with high enantio- and diastereocontrol. Gideon Grogan of the University of York overexpressed (Adv. Synth. Cat. 2008, 349, 916) the enzyme 6-oxocamphor hydrolase in E. coli . The 6-OCH so prepared converted prochiral diketones such as 8 to the cyclopentane 9 in high ee. Richard P. Hsung of the University of Wisconsin found (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 661) that the carbene produced by oxidation of the ynamide 10 cyclized to 11 with high de. Teck-Peng Loh of Nanyang Technological University extended (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 7194) butane-2,3-diol directed cyclization to the preparation of the cyclopentane 15. Note that sidechain relative configuration is also controlled. We established (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 3467) that the thermal ene reaction of 17 delivered the tetrasubstituted cyclopentane 18 as a single diastereomer. Tony K. M. Shing of the Chinese University of Hong Kong devised (J. Org. Chem. 2007, 72, 6610) a simple protocol for the conversion of carbohydrate-derived lactones such as 19 to the highly-substituted, enantiomerically-pure cyclohexenone 21. Hiromichi Fujioka and Yasuyuki Kita of Osaka University established (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 5605) a chiral diol-mediated conversion of the cyclohexadiene 22 to the diastereomerically pure cyclohexenone 24. Dirk Trauner, now of the University of Munich, reported (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 149) an elegant assembly of the neuritogenic polyketide shimalactone A 28.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an in-depth examination of the career Eliza Cook. After publishing her first book, Lays of a Wild Harp, Cook submitted verse to the Weekly Dispatch and soon thereafter became its house poet. By 1847, Cook was serving as editor of the paper’s ‘facts and scraps’ column, a position that enabled her to hone her editorial skills and publish the work of fellow women writers. Cook’s masculine appearance violated the poetess norm of the period, as did her romantic partnership with American actress Charlotte Cushman, but this seemed only to enhance her image as an eccentric yet accessible poet of the people. In 1849, she parlayed this fame into the founding of her own Eliza Cook’s Journal, which initially surpassed Dickens’s Household Words in popularity. Yet as the 1840s gave way to the more conservative 1850s, Cook was frequently the target of gender-trolling attacks in the popular press, which defined her as a sexual deviant on the one hand and a second-rate poet on the other. This notoriety may have been one factor that forced her to retreat from the public eye in 1852—a move that initiated her gradual disappearance from literary history.
