Abstract:
Abstract Recent approaches to data-to-text generation have adopted the very successful encoder-decoder architecture or variants thereof. These models generate text that is fluent (but often imprecise) and perform quite poorly at selecting appropriate content and ordering it coherently. To overcome some of these issues, we propose a neural model with a macro planning stage followed by a generation stage reminiscent of traditional methods which embrace separate modules for planning and surface realization. Macro plans represent high level organization of important content such as entities, events, and their interactions; they are learned from data and given as input to the generator. Extensive experiments on two data-to-text benchmarks (RotoWire and MLB) show that our approach outperforms competitive baselines in terms of automatic and human evaluation.

Abstract:
The paper is an attempt to shed light on one of the most interesting issues on the crossroads of pragmatics and text linguistics – presuppositional and logical structure of the text. The relevance of this study is determined by the fact that it unveils text architecture from a new angle – its micro-/macropresuppositional content. The research outcomes allow of the following statement – the semantic structure of the text largely owes to and depends on the macro-/micro-presuppositions of the text underlying it. The paper also clarifies the differences between the notions of micro-text and macro-text on the one hand and micro-presupposition and macro-presupposition on the other as these phenomena play a crucial role in text composition and progression.

Abstract:
The problem of textual credibility is considered in line with the theory of reference from the standpoint of a text’s grammar. The referential semantics of a text is determined by the type of discourse in which the text is generated. Subsequently, the criteria for credibility are discur sively conditioned. The article reveals the referential aspects of news media text as a “product” of news discourse with its accuracy and objectivity requirements to factually ascertain a message. To describe these characteristics, the concept of referential density of the text is introduced, which is revealed through macrostructural text analysis. The basic definitions of this analysis are provided, its methodology is described and its testing is carried out to explicate the degree of reference density of the text. The key terms of macrostructural analysis are the macro-textual position and the ways of filling it. The main macro-textual positions of the news media text are headline ↔︎ text, compositional-factual, compositional-logical, compositional-syntagmatic relations and stylistic perspective. The different ways of filling these positions reveal different degrees of factuality/interpretability, which can be located on the reference scale in a certain sequence. Scales for each macro-textual position are combined into a referential matrix of the text, graduated in the direction of decreasing reference density/increasing interpretability. Another way to visualize the results of macro-textual analysis is to construct a radar diagram, on which the referential focus of the text is especially evident. Using the example of three news reports of the Russian press, the analysis of the filling of macro-textual positions, of which reveals varying degrees of reference density, three types of referential focus of news media text are demonstrated: concentrated, shifted and diffused. The distinguished types reflect the corresponding referential types of news media text, the referential density of which is a “linguistic dimension” of its credibility.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the collection of Francesco Petrarca’s Res Seniles, the last latin epistolary started by the author in 1361 and concluded in limine mortis in 1374. This thesis intends to delve into the macro-structural space of Petrarca’s Senili, with specific attention toward the compositional parameters and the strategies of internal connection underlying the creation of the collection de senilitate. My research focuses precisely on the reciprocal relationship that exists between the individual texts and the collection designed to accommodate them. The thesis consists of three parts. The first is structured in three chapters; the first one is dedicated to the genesis of the Senili’s collection; the second one focuses on the tradition of the text; the third chapter of the first part reconstructs the editorial history of the sylloge. The main section of the thesis offers an examination of the Res Seniles seventeen books. For each liber, it has been defined a summary prospectus of its contents, accompanied by data on textual consistency, the dating and the ordering of the letters, the number and identity of the addressees, and the possible presence of intra- and intertextual references that allow unraveling the network of cross-references to other Petrarchan writings. The third part of the thesis gives an account of the solidity of the overall design of the work, highlighting the coherence and cohesion of the macro-text and interpreting the organizational logics that presided over the arrangement of the texts in the collection

This essay offers a geocritical reading of Croce del Sud (2020), in the attempt to trace connections with other areas of Claudio Magris’ macro-text and, above all, to highlight the extreme evolution of his literary geography, here resolved in an empty, glacial, absolute space, but at the same time open to the mythopoeic tension of other spaces: from Atlantis to Lemuria, from Thule to Antichthon.

Abstract:
This article describes solutions to couple of problems: CMU-MOSEI database preprocessing to improve data quality and bimodal multitask classification of emotions and sentiments. With the help of experimental studies, representative features for acoustic and linguistic information are identified among pretrained neural networks with Transformer architecture. The most representative features for the analysis of emotions and sentiments are EmotionHuBERT and RoBERTa for audio and text modalities respectively. The article establishes a baseline for bimodal multitask recognition of sentiments and emotions – 63.2% and 61.3%, respectively, measured with macro F-score. Experiments were conducted with different approaches to combining modalities – concatenation and multi-head attention. The most effective architecture of neural network with early concatenation of audio and text modality and late multi-head attention for emotions and sentiments recognition is proposed. The proposed neural network is combined with logistic regression, which achieves 63.5% and 61.4% macro F-score by bimodal (audio and text) multitasking recognition of 3 sentiment classes and 6 emotion binary classes.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of the analysis of the functions of interrogative sentences in modern experimental (fragmented) fiction, that reflects the processes of disintegration, based on the works of small prose (about 5 % of all short story texts) published in the magazines “Znamya”, “Octyabr’” and “Novyj mir” in the last 5 years. The selection of the material is based on the author’s definition of the narrative genre (short story, small prose, other prose, prose), on the formed discreteness of the text (various types of rubrication at the level of macro-syntax, at the level of microsyntax — the dismemberment of the syntagmatic chain of the sentence, the elimination of connectivity indicators, the use of alternative punctuation), on the identification of non-standard metagraphemics as the design piece of art’s means. A comprehensive analysis of the disintegration degree of small volume texts with interrogative sentences (question marks), pragmatics (types of questions), structural features (single questions, chains of interrogative sentences, combination with parcellation), the context of the introduction (position in the structure of the text and the presence/absence of a direct answer in a question-and-answer situation) allows you to determine the following functions of interrogative sentences in the text of experimental prose of small form 1) complication of the subject perspective of the text by removing the traditional punctuation of the parties of speakers in dialogues and including private questions in them; 2) metalanguage narrator’s reflection performing in the text with the help of existential rhetorical questions and unanswered questions; 3) the performance of the text-forming function of interrogative sentences in lyric monologues reflecting auto-communication. The revealed features of questions in modern prose reflect the author’s search for a means of compensation for disintegration, the increasing colloquialism of a literary text and the change in the recipient’s perception of his narrative (the desire to remove distance, modeling online communication), which is predetermined by the orientation to the modern reader, the search for new forms of artistic communication. Abstract:
Automatically recognising and extracting the reasoning expressed in natural language text is extremely demanding and only very recently has there been significant headway. While such argument mining focuses on logos (the content of what is said) evidence has demonstrated that using ethos (the character of the speaker) can sometimes be an even more powerful tool of influence. We study the UK parliamentary debates which furnish a rich source of ethos with linguistic material signalling the ethotic relationships between politicians. We then develop a novel deep modular recurrent neural network, DMRNN, approach and employ proven methods from argument mining and sentiment analysis to create an ethos mining pipeline. Annotation of ethotic statements is reliable and its extraction is robust (macro-F1 = 0.83), while annotation of polarity is perfect and its extraction is solid (macro-F1 = 0.84). By exploring correspondences between ethos in political discourse and major events in the political landscape through ethos analytics, we uncover tantalising evidence that identifying expressions of positive and negative ethotic sentiment is a powerful instrument for understanding the dynamics of governments.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the analysis of some linguistic elements that pose problems in the English translation of the famous novel: El Lazarillo de Tormes. To carry out the analysis we have chosen the Spanish version of the bilingual edition (Spanish-Galician) recently reviewed by Rodríguez López-Vázquez in 2019 as initial text. The three English versions are the ones translated by Merwin in 1962, Frye in 2015 and Torres Aguilar in year 2018. Given the reduced characteristics of this format, we will base our approach on two concrete examples. The first analysis focuses on macro-structural aspects which are observed throughout the whole work and that we demonstrate through the Prologue. There are transmission errors caused by an incorrect choice of the initial text and as a consequence of that, a wrong translation of the texts in the English language. The second example focuses on an expression contained in the initial text: “San Juan y ciégale” and how it has also been wrongly translated into English. This paper finishes with our own proposal, a series of conclusions and suggestions for future research, and the mandatory references required to continue deepening in the field.

Abstract:
Manufacturers of high-end professional products are committed to delivering outstanding customer-quality experiences. They maintain databases of customer complaints and repair service jobs data to monitor product quality. Analyzing the text data from service jobs can help identify common problems, recurring issues, and patterns that impact customer satisfaction, and aid manufacturers in taking corrective actions to improve product design, manufacturing processes, and customer support services. However, distinguishing legitimate quality issues from a brief, domain-specific text in service jobs remains a challenge. This study aims to automate the classification of technical service repair job data into legitimate quality issues or non-issues to assist individuals in the quality field department in a large company. To achieve this goal, we developed a comprehensive pipeline based on natural language processing and machine learning techniques including raw text preprocessing, dealing with imbalance class distribution, feature extraction, and classification. In this study, We evaluate several feature extraction and machine learning classification methods and perform the Friedman test followed by Nemenyi post-hoc analysis to find the best-performing model. Our results show that the passive-aggressive classifier achieved the highest average accuracy of 94% and 89% average macro F1-score when trained on TF-IDF vectors.

Abstract:
The paper proposes a new text-based indicator aimed at assessing the impact over time of political debate on economy. Textual data from the plenary verbatim reports of the Italian Parliament are pre-processed and relevant themes, whose temporal evolution allows predicting fluctuations in fundamental macro-economic variables, are estimated via a Correlated Topic Model. Specifically, a Political Debate Index is derived based on a time-varying weighting function of the estimated topic proportions. The capability, in terms of out-of-sample forecasts accuracy, of the proposed approach in improving the predictability of selected economic indicators is evaluated considering different predictors. Abstract:
Abstract Objectives/Scope Wood aims to introduce a novel approach for rapidly and effectively benchmarking maintenance and reliability in the upstream and midstream oil and gas sectors. The proposed method will provide valuable insights at both macro (overall build) and micro (individual maintenance items) levels, with the goal of improving asset performance management and setting new industry standards. This approach promotes collaboration among industry peers and sharing of best practices, driving overall industry progress. Methods, Procedures, Process Our approach uses advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms to match short text descriptions from multiple maintenance builds, utilizing techniques ranging from Jaccard similarity to state-of-the-art language model embeddings. In-house developed denoising algorithms remove unnecessary information to clarify the text, addressing potential issues of data quality and consistency. This process allows for the identification of similar tasks, which then serve as key columns to match the entire build, facilitating effective benchmarking and enabling more accurate comparisons. Results, Observations, Conclusions The proposed method enables swift benchmarking among maintenance builds and allows for frequent comparison at both micro and macro levels. This overcomes the limitations of traditional manual matching processes, which are time-consuming, costly, and error prone. By determining the optimal frequency of maintenance intervention to minimize cost and carbon footprint while maximizing reliability, our approach highlights the power of data- driven decisions to enhance asset reliability and streamline maintenance processes. The method fosters a culture of collaboration among industry peers, promoting the sharing of best practices and driving overall industry progress. Moreover, it has been shown to provide valuable insights that can be leveraged for continuous improvement and to address common challenges in asset performance management and maintenance practices. Novel/Additive Information In contrast to traditional methods that rely on Failure modes, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA) tables, subjective understanding, or manual matching, our approach revolutionizes benchmarking using natural language processing and data-driven methodologies. This ground-breaking contribution takes away manual time and expense, improving efficiency and ensuring that the changes implemented are data-backed. These leads to continuous improvement in maintenance and reliability practices within the energy industry, ultimately enhancing asset performance management and reliability standards.

Abstract:
Automatic diagnosis based on clinical notes is critical especially in the emergency department, where a fast and professional result is vital in assuring proper and timely treatment. Previous works formalize this task as plain text classification and fail to utilize the medically significant tree structure of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding system. Besides, external medical knowledge is rarely used before, and we explore it by extracting relevant materials from Wikipedia or Baidupedia. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-based tree decoding model (K-BTD), and the inference procedure is a top-down decoding process from the root node to leaf nodes. The stepwise inference procedure enables the model to give support for decision at each step, which visualizes the diagnosis procedure and adds to the interpretability of final predictions. Experiments on real-world data from the emergency department of a large-scale hospital indicate that the proposed model outperforms all baselines in both micro-F1 and macro-F1, and reduce the semantic distance dramatically.
