PurposePrivilege is often silent, invisible and not made explicit, and silence is a key question for theorizing on organizations. This paper examines interrelations between privilege and silence for relatively privileged professionals in high-intensity knowledge businesses (KIBs).Design/methodology/approachThis paper draws on 112 interviews in two rounds of interviews using the collaborative interactive action research method. The analysis focuses on processes of recruitment, careers and negotiation of boundaries between work and nonwork in these KIBs. The authors study how relative privilege within social inequalities connects with silences in multiple ways, and how the invisibility of privilege operates at different levels: individual identities and interpersonal actions of privilege (micro), as organizational level phenomena (meso) or as societally constructed (macro).FindingsAt each level, privilege is reproduced in part through silence. The authors also examine how processes connecting silence, privilege and social inequalities operate differently in relation to both disadvantage and the disadvantaged, and privilege and the privileged.Originality/valueThis study is relevant for organization studies, especially in the kinds of “multi-privileged” contexts where inequalities, disadvantages and subordination may remain hidden and silenced, and, thus, are continuously reproduced.

The purpose of the research is to study the association and impact of knowledge sharing through its dimensions (pleasure in helping others, efficient self-knowledge, support for higher management, organizational incentives, use of information and communication technology). In reducing the causes of organizational silence (distrust towards managers, fear of breaking relationships or Stop it, fear of speaking out loud, fear of social isolation) in the health sector environment in Salah al-Din. The descriptive and analytical research method was adopted as the research relied on the deductive method. The research problem is embodied by the following question (What is the role of knowledge sharing in reducing the causes of organizational silence in Salah El-Din General Hospital?). The main research hypothesis is that there is a correlation and effect between knowledge sharing in its dimensions and the reduction of the causes of organizational silence in its dimensions. A sample of (146) individuals. A set of results, the most important of which is the existence of correlation and impact relationships at the macro and sub-level. The research recommends paying more and more attention to knowledge sharing for the purpose of completely eliminating the causes of organizational silence, and the research is unique in that it combines two variables in the environment of the Iraqi health sector, as well as dealing with the analytical aspect.

Studies of home language use tend to focus on macro-level language changes and verbal communication rather than on micro-level analyses of family communication. This makes it diffcult to form a nuanced picture of the relations among diverse resources deployed in transnational family communication. In this paper, we address this issue by reporting results from a preliminary study of the micro-level communicative interactions of a frst-generation transnational Australian Vietnamese family who have settled in Melbourne, Australia. Through an in-depth analysis of a 20-minute video clip, we capture intersections in the rich, diverse communicative resources used by the family as they watched a favourite English television program while simultaneously keeping in contact with family members overseas. Our analysis shows that transnational family communication patterns involve complex displays of language use, silence, touch, movement, and spatial orientation, which together enable the family to communicate in the here and now with individuals near and far. We use the multiplicity framework to interpret the fuidity of multimodal communication, intimacy, and continuity across space.

The article analyzes the issues of material and technical support of the educational process in institutions of general secondary education, the solution of which lies in the three-level subordination of educational institutions (macro-level – ministries, departments and institutions, meso-level – local executive authorities, local self-government bodies, united territorial communities, micro-level – educational institutions). It is indicated that in order to solve the tasks set at the state level to modernize educational processes, it is necessary to work together at all levels. It is proved that conceptually all issues of the organization of educational space are solved on macro-level, real ways of implementation and financing – on meso-level, and the leading role in the arrangement of specific educational premises is played by managers and teachers of educational institutions. Therefore, our research highlights the importance of training future teachers who are able to implement the concept of a New Ukrainian School in all its areas, in particular from the point of view of updating the educational space.
The key aspects of forming the educational space of the New Ukrainian School in terms of comfort, safety and aesthetic appeal are identified. Recommendations are given on the color design of the interior of educational premises for primary, middle and high school students, as well as on color solutions for educational premises for various purposes.
The relevance of zoning the educational environment by centers (discoveries, news, materials, communication, thematic, teachers, silence, creativity, wildlife) of educational activities of participants in the educational process is revealed. The main (permanent) and mobile (variable) zones of the training room are defined, and the approximate equipment of each of them is given. It is proved that the organization of a comfortable educational environment will contribute to the free development of the child’s creative personality. A number of requirements (ergonomics, safety, reliability and aesthetics) for school furniture are defined, as they should first of all be atropometrically appropriate and comfortable.

This article examines the interaction between Finnish employment officials and their immigrant clients in service encounter conversations. It employs the concepts of metacommunicative talk, silence, agency and asymmetric interaction situation. Such service encounters between native speakers of Finnish and immigrants going through the integration process and speaking Finnish as their second language constitute situations of institutional interaction, characterised by asymmetry. Asymmetry during the service encounter arises from the roles and power relations between the official and client, a familiarity with the routines associated with service encounters, and the use of Finnish as the language of conversation during the encounter.
This article examines two authentic service encounters, recorded in a Finnish employment office. The encounters are analysed using discourse analysis, combining micro-level analysis of language use and macro-level analysis of the situation. Interviews with the employment officials and background information collected from the officials and clients via questionnaires are used in support of the qualitative analysis.
Officials use different methods of interaction with their clients. In addition, the individual characteristics of officials and clients and their cultural differences influence the construction of interaction during a service encounter. Finnish officials can sometimes handle service encounters with very little talk – sometimes with hardly any talk at all. However, metacommunicative talk can serve as a vehicle for reinforcing the client’s agency and supporting the immigrant in learning the language and customs, as well as in establishing a foothold in the new community, and thereby promoting the integration process as a whole.

Introduction. This research aims at analyzing the novel by Vladimir Nabokov Transparent Things (1972) from the perspective of post-modernist philosophy. By post-modernist philosophy I mean the post-structural view of the sign theory, that focuses on iconicity, symbolic and iconic nature of the sign, the сoncept of deconstruction, the concept of rhizome, the concept of silence, the concept of différance (as stated by Derrida), the concept of difference and repetition introduced by G. Deleuze. This philosophy is linked to a more general view expressed, for instance, by Derrida (in his work the Gift of Death (Donner la mort)). The main innovative element of this research, therefore, is to study the prose by Nabokov as an example of post-modernist writing simultaneously applying the views and concepts introduced by cognitive linguistics, literary critics and post-modern writers like J. Derrida, U. Eco, R. Barthes.Methodology and sources. The research method used is semantic and structural analysis of the novel by Nabokov Transparent Things. Its main tool is the use of ideas introduced by French poststructuralists regarding the theory of sign, the symbolic nature of language, study of multiple meanings generated by a word in the process of its use and decoding.Results and discussion. The results of this research allow to outline main tendencies in the development of the 20th century narrative. It adheres to the general law of multi-level structure of the novel, play of words and sounds, which corresponds to the general view of difference (as coined by Derrida), deconstruction, rhizome, iconicity of sign. The rhizomorphic structure of the novel at the same time is mirror-like, which allows to apply the difference-repetition dichotomy put forward by G. Deleuze. If the micro-structure of Nabokov’s texts allows to make generalization about the author’s use of language, its macro-structure reveals deeper philosophical notions, implying that the death of the character in the novel leads to the study of the transcendental, or ”the Other” in psychoanalytical terms, thus putting the plot on a different scale of values. The view of language and its structure in its relation to the notion of transparency, allows to see the sign in a Heideggerian way, as bearing the replica of the world, having more in itself about the world, than anything else.Conclusion. The novel Transparent Things by Nabokov falls into the category of similar novels in which the author develops symbolic language and explores its potential, following the general pattern and establishing the rules of narrative construction in postmodern tradition.

This article takes a single moment—a court case that took place in Zanzibar in 1910—and uses it to explore the legal imaginaries that circulated around the Western Indian Ocean at the height of British imperialism. It stitches together the actions of litigants, the utterances of qadis, and the proclamations of jurists, reading them alongside the silences in the legal material itself to bring to life a world of law, mobility, and imagination. More broadly, it suggests that through the exploration of parallel but never fully intersecting legal encounters in South Arabia and East Africa that emerged from a single moment, historians might use micro-level discourses and actions to make claims about macro-level phenomena.

In many Western societies there are rising concerns about increasing polarization in public debate. However, statistics on private attitudes paint a different picture: the average attitudes in societies are more moderate and remain rather stable over time. The present paper presents an agent-based model of how such discrepancies between public opinion and private attitudes develop at the scale of micro-societies. Based on social psychological theorizing, the model distinguishes between two types of agents: a) those seeking to gain or maintain a good reputation and status, and b) those seeking to promote group harmony by reaching consensus. We characterized these different types of agents by different decision rules for either voicing their opinion or remaining silent, based on the behavior of their proximal network. Results of the model simulations show that even when the private attitudes of the agents are held constant, publicly expressed opinions can oscillate and (depending on the reputational concerns of individual actors) situations can occur in which minorities as well as majorities are silenced. We conclude that the macro-level consequences of micro-level decisions to either voice an opinion or remain silent provide a foundation for better understanding how public opinions are shaped. Moreover, we discuss the conditions under which public opinion could be considered a good representation of private attitudes in a society.

Abstract Human SLAMF1 (signaling-lymphocytic-activation-molecule-family1, CD150) is a self-ligand adhesion/co-stimulatory molecule wich belongs to a family of 9 receptors. SLAMF1 is also a microbial sensor, as it regulates Gram- bacterial phagosome functions through an ubiquitous cellular autophagic machinery and serves as a receptor for Measles virus. In this work, we investigated expression and function of SLAMF1 in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells. Results indicate that expression of SLAMF1 is lost in a subset of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia characterized by an aggressive form of the disease, with shorter time to first treatment (median 2.2 years in SLAMF1- vs 7.6 in SLAMF1+ patients, P=.001) and overall survival (77.5% survival rate at 10 years in SLAMF1- vs 94.7% years in SLAMF1+ patients, P=.036). Consistently, SLAMF1low CLL patients are characterized by clinical or molecular markers of a more aggressive disease. Stable silencing of SLAMF1 in the CLL-like Mec-1 cell line (constitutively SLAMF1+) modulated pathways related to cell migration, cytoskeletal organization and intracellular vesicle formation/recirculation. Decreased expression of CXCR3 and an increased expression of CXCR4, CD38 and CD44 were maintained at the molecular level, likely explaining why SLAMF1- cells show enhanced chemotactic responses to CXCL12. This phenotype was confirmed in primary cells, by comparing a cohorts of SLAMF1high to one of SLAMF1low patients. Gene expression profiling also indicates profound modulation of pathways connected with vesicle formation and recirculation. Consistently, cross-linking of SLAMF1 with an agonisic mAb in primary cells and in the Mec-1 cell line enhanced the generation of autophagic vesicles and their fusion with the lysosomes. Ligation of SLAMF1 with this agonistic monoclonal antibody promoted the autophagic flux, by increasing accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inducing phosphorylation of p38, JNK1/2 and bcl-2. The direct consequence was the formation of the autophagy macro-complex containing SLAMF1, the scaffold protein beclin1 and the enzyme Vps34. In agreement with the observation that many drugs used in CLL have autophagy-mediated effects, including fludarabine and the BH3 mimetic ABT-737, SLAMF1-silenced Mec-1 cells or SLAMF1low primary CLL cells were resistant to treatment with both agents. These results indicate that SLAMF1 plays as a critical role in CLL homeostasis. Loss of SLAMF1 expression modulates genetic pathways that regulate chemotaxis and autophagy and that potentially affect drug responses, thus providing a likely explanation for the unfavorable clinical outcome experienced by this patient subset. Restoring SLAMF1 expression in CLL cells would therefore be of therapeutic value for patients with aggressive CLL. PurposeTo understand the position of female academics in public universities in Egypt, the authors of this paper aim to answer the question of what comes between victims breaking their silence about workplace sexual harassment (WSH).Design/methodology/approachA qualitative research method is employed, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 female academics from four public universities selected from among 26 public institutions of higher education in Egypt. Thematic analysis was used to extract main ideas from the transcripts.FindingsAt the macro level in Egypt, stipulating an anti-harassment law and harsher penalties were found to be a motivator for female academics to speak up against WSH. At the meso organizational level, establishing anti-harassment units in universities is perceived as an effective mechanism for empowering female academics to respond to, expose and seek punitive action against WSH perpetrators. What was found to be a real challenge to reporting perpetrators is the assumption of some female academics that they will never be heard because of socio-cultural norms that hold university professors as honourable and impeccable. Another challenge is that female academics are poorly represented at both professorial levels and in senior administrative positions in Egyptian academic contexts. Sadly, challenges faced by women in academic contexts, such as WSH, are not being prioritized on the agenda of their universities. Although organizational behaviours and country-specific culture challenge female academics' proactive stance against WSH, new anti-harassment laws and university policies are changing this scenario.Originality/valueThis paper contributes by filling a gap in human resource (HR) management, higher education and public administration in which empirical studies of WSH in academic contexts have been limited so far.

The literature on the radical right’s electorate offers a plethora of potential explanations as to why people vote for the radical right. This chapter organizes the presumptive causes of right-wing voting along the lines of the familiar micro-meso-macro scheme, focusing both on a number of landmark studies and on some of the latest research. In doing so, it weighs the evidence in favor of and against some prominent hypotheses about the conditions for radical right party success, including the pure-protest hypothesis, the charismatic-leader hypothesis, and the silent-counterrevolution hypothesis. It also discusses the existing knowledge on the effects of a host of meso- and macro-level factors, and points out some directions for further research. The chapter concludes that radical right mobilization is now the rule rather than the exception, and that we should perhaps focus on understanding why it is not successful in some cases.

Higher education institutions attempting to establish an international branch campus must create a global communication strategy in order to succeed in the short-term, long-term, and through future global crises. This article discusses best practices in updating or creating and establishing a global communication strategy for higher education institutions involved in international branch campus expansion. Global leadership communication succeeds on a macro and micro level. This article discusses eight action objectives on the macro level for the institution to incorporate in their strategy design. The eight action objectives are made up of transparency, removing organizational silence, collective reflexivity, crisis management, content management, language management, generational approach, and corporate social responsibility. On the micro level, this article discusses six important individual competencies that global leaders should possess while implementing a global communication strategy for an institution in a foreign environment. The six competencies include intercultural engagement, intercultural communication, curiosity, active listening, flexible observational lens, and a global mindset. When a branch campus is internationally established, institutional leadership needs continued development through formal learning and experiential opportunities to increase communication competencies for core global leaders. Future opportunities for organizational expatriate assignments and employee global mindset development can lay a foundation for long-term strategic success with a now globally engaged institution.

Bio-inspired hydrodynamic thrust generation using piezoelectric transduction has recently been explored using Macro-Fiber Composite (MFC) actuators. The MFC technology strikes a balance between the actuation force and structural deformation levels for effective swimming performance, and additionally offers geometric scalability, silent operation, and ease of fabrication. Recently we have shown that mean thrust levels comparable to biological fish of similar size can be achieved using MFC fins. The present work investigates the effect of length-to-width (L/b) aspect ratio on the hydrodynamic thrust generation performance of MFC cantilever fins by accounting for the power consumption level. It is known that the hydrodynamic inertia and drag coefficients are controlled by the aspect ratio especially for L/b<5. The three MFC bimorph fins explored in this work have the aspect ratios of 2.1, 3.9, and 5.4. A nonlinear electrohydroelastic model is employed to extract the inertia and drag coefficients from the vibration response to harmonic actuation for the first bending mode. Experiments are then conducted for various actuation voltage levels to quantify the mean thrust resultant and power consumption levels for different aspect ratios. Variation of the thrust coefficient of the MFC fins with aspect ratio is also modeled and validated.
