Abstract:
The theatre shelves of secondhand bookshops testify to the sometime popularity and prolific output of the theatre publicist and would-be historian Walter Macqueen-Pope. Yet even by the time Macqueen-Pope was publishing his later volumes in the 1950s, the rise of academic theatre scholarship was questioning such anecdotally based and unverified accounts of the theatre and its past. Today, we can look at Macqueen-Pope, and at the period immediately before the First World War which was so often the focus of his attention, not so much for evidence of flawed scholarship as for his revealing attitude towards his subject and its social context. For anecdotage and nostalgia have inevitably to be taken into account in any historical approach to so ephemeral an art as the theatre, and, as the authors here conclude, while Macqueen-Pope may not tell us the whole truth about his many subjects, such a ‘wistful remembrancer’ remains significant to any investigation of a theatrical past ‘that must always be a melting pot of imperfect recognitions and unattainable desires’. Jim Davis is Associate Professor of Theatre and Head of the School of Theatre, Film and Dance at the University of New South Wales. victor Emelijanow is Professor of Drama and Head of the Department of Drama at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales. Both have written extensively on nineteenth-century British theatre and are the joint authors of Reflecting the Audience: London Theatregoing 1840–1880, which has just been published by the University of lowa Press.

We explore ideal models for a programming language with recursive polymorphic types, variants of the model studied by MacQueen, Plotkin, and Sethi. The use of suitable ideals yields a close fit between models and programming language. Two of our semantics of type expressions are faithful, in the sense that programs that behave identically in all contexts have exactly the same types.

In this article, Professor Hector MacQueen offers a Scots law response to the recently published arguments of Professor Nils Jansen on the German law of unjustified enrichment (as to which, see Jansen, “Farewell to Unjustified Enrichment” (2016) 20 EdinLR 123). The author argues that unjustified enrichment provides, and continues to provide, a useful “generalising” concept, the creative effects of which are far from spent (at least in Scotland).

This paper discusses the use of wiki technology to provide a navigation structure for the online version of the Mary MacQueen Scrap Book, which contains newspaper clippings about the Victorian artist. After outlining the architecture of the wiki, the navigation structure is discussed and several questions are posed: is the navigation structure an index? If so, what type? Or is it just a linkage structure or topic map? Does such a distinction really matter? Are these definitions in reality function-based?

AbstractWe have found from line-of-sight integration of scattered light and thermal emission that the appearance of a hump in the F-corona, which was observed in the near-infrared wavelengths by Peterson (1969) and MacQueen (1968), is very sensitive to the change of size distribution of circumsolar dust grains. Namely, the size distribution affects the balance of scattered sunlight and thermal emission. We suggest that a temporal variation in the size distribution of circumsolar dust grains is a potential origin of the temporal variation of the hump structure observed in the F-corona.

Cheops pyramid. The terrain correction is a way to correct the initial slab model which for each station is at the station elevation. In underground surveys of small horizontal but large vertical extent, I have shown (Cheops pyramid for example) that the model used (or the standard terrain corrections used) should extend greatly as compared to the 1000 m radius initally used in this case (one should bear in mind that we were looking for cavities of a few cubic meters only). Figure 8 of my paper shows that the slab + terrain correction model is quite wrong as long as the terrain correction radius is small. Note that apart from the pyramid itself, the ground is practically flat and located at the low level of the pyramid.

Abstract:
The following seven papers were presented on May 16, 1984, at the Geological Association of Canada and Mineralogical Association of Canada joint annual meeting. The special session, organized by R. W. Macqueen and J. A. Coope, contained 10 papers and was sponsored by the Mineral Deposits Division of the Geological Association of Canada. Our objective in organizing the special session was to examine organically based processes and relationships that may be of major importance to the origin of ore deposits. As noted by Fyfe (1984), the concept of the geochemical cycle focuses attention on pathways of chemical elements and isotopes of the Earth's system during geologic history. It is clear from the chemistry of carbon-rich materials that a wide range of elements is concentrated directly or indirectly by biological processes operating as part of the geochemical cycle. Two of the papers of the special session examine some of these concentration processes, although definitive links to actual ore deposits cannot be made yet. Beveridge and Fyfe document the remarkable ability of the anionic cell walls of certain bacteria to concentrate metals and to provide sites for nucleation and growth of minerals. In a related paper, Mann and Fyfe show that several species of simple freshwater green algae readily concentrate large amounts of uranium under both experimental and natural conditions (Elliot Lake and Thames River, Ontario). Two papers deal with aspects of sulphate reduction. Birnbaum and Wireman describe controlled experiments that suggest that sulphate-reducing bacteria may be involved in the selective replacement of sulphate-evaporite minerals by silica and in the precipitation of silica in association with sulphide mineral phases in banded iron formations. Their work focuses directly on the effect that bacterial sulphate reduction has on silica solubility. Trudinger et al. examine the question of mechanisms of sulphate reduction at temperatures less than 200 °C and the bearing this has on origin of sulphide for low-temperature sulphide ore deposits. Although there is empirical evidence favouring abiological sulphate reduction at temperatures in the vicinity of 100 °C, Trudinger et al. have not been able to demonstrate abiological reduction of sulphate under controlled laboratory conditions and at temperatures under about 200 °C. Perhaps catalysts, as yet undiscovered, are involved in this process in nature.Impressive progress has been made in understanding the diagenetic evolution of organic matter in response to heat and pressure in geological environments: excellent reviews are found in Barnes et al. (1984) and Bustin et al. (1985). Simoneit's paper examines and reviews the genesis of petroleum in a most unusual setting, that of the active ocean ridge spreading centre of Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California. There, in the vicinity of black smokers and associated metallic sulphide deposits, petroleum originates instantaneously geologically as a result of hydrothermal activity. The question of genetic involvement of organic matter in the origin of the metallic sulphides (e.g., reduction of sulphate to H2S) cannot be answered yet for this setting with the available data. The final two special session papers included here are concerned with organic matter associated with mineralization in Canadian Shield Precambrian settings. Willingham et al. demonstrate that Elliot Lake – Blind River Early Proterozoic uranium deposits with minor amounts of associated gold also contain kerogen-like organic matter. Some of this organic matter has anomalously rich amounts of gold and uranium and appears to have originated as mats of cyanobacteria, possibly with the ability to concentrate these metals. For a number of settings in the Archean-aged Abitibi greenstone belt of Ontario and Quebec, Springer demonstrates that carbon, at least partly of organic origin, is closely associated with some gold deposits. Her interpretation is that carbon activated by shear-zone-associated hydrothermal fluids has provided sites for fixing some of the gold.Three of the papers given at the special session are not included here. H. T. Shacklette reviewed metal uptake by young conifer trees, demonstrating that nursery-grown seedlings of several species readily concentrated a variety of metals, including lead, zinc, tin, and gold, over a 7 year period. This work is of interest to those involved in geochemical prospecting and is now published elsewhere (King et al. 1984). R. W. Macqueen presented quantitative data on the genesis of sulphide by abiological bitumen–sulphate reactions at the Pine Point lead–zinc property, Northwest Territories, Canada (Macqueen and Powell 1983; Powell and Macqueen 1984). Although Trudinger et al. have not been able to demonstrate abiological reduction of sulphate at temperatures approximating those of Pine Point [Formula: see text], the data presented by Macqueen (Powell and Macqueen 1984) are consistent with the amounts, alteration, and composition of bitumens at Pine Point, as well as with the presence of native sulphur and the sulphur isotope compositions of the various Pine Point sulphur species. This work is continuing, and a more extensive account is in preparation. J. R. Watterson examined relationships between freezing climates and the local chemical behaviour of gold in the weathering cycle, concluding that ice-induced accumulation of organic acids, bacteria, and other organic matter at mineral surfaces may increase rates of chemical attack, leading to dissolution of normally insoluble metals such as gold (Watterson 1986).Interest in organic aspects of the geochemical cycle, including ore deposition, is growing dramatically (e.g., Fyfe 1984). Although the following papers address a limited range of topics within the field, they do indicate some of the diversity and variety of active processes and associations between metallic elements and organic components. Perhaps, in the not too distant future, we will be able to identify or even discover whole classes of ore deposits that owe their origin directly to organic influences operating within the geochemical cycle.

AbstractThis paper, by Hector MacQueen, assesses the current state of Scots law and the Scottish legal system, arguing that as a small legal system which cannot be self-contained it is inevitably in a state of crisis, from which, however, it will not be rescued by Scotland becoming independent.* Whatever happens after the referendum concerning Scottish Independence on 18 September 2014, the law is in need of active legislative reform, possibly codification, while the courts must become more positive in the attraction of business rather than, as it sometimes seems, seeking to push it away. Mere defence of the status quo will end in disablement and defeat.

AbstractThe weak polymorphic type system of Standard ML of New Jersey (SML/NJ) (MacQueen, 1992) has only been presented as part of the implementation of the SML/NJ compiler, not as a formal type system. As a result, it is not well understood. And while numerous versions of the implementation have been shown unsound, the concept has not been proved sound or unsound. We present an explanation of weak polymorphism and show that a formalization of this is sound. We also relate this to the SML/NJ implementation of weak polymorphism through a series of type systems that incorporate elements of the SML/NJ type inference algorithm.

Abstract:
Objective: The study aimed to explore occupational therapy intervention approaches to strengthen and enhance the self-care skills of adolescents with autism. Method: This research used qualitative methodology and in total five occupational therapists working in rehabilitation centers were involved in expert interviews. The thematic analysis method was applied for data analysis and main categories were developed to describe occupational therapy intervention approaches used in enhancing the self-care performance of adolescents with autism (Guest, MacQueen, and Namey, 2012). Conclusion: Four themes were developed to describe the main difficulties of adolescents with autism in performing self-care activities: person-based difficulties in performing self-care activities; challenges in providing external assistance to carry out self-care. As well as effective occupational therapy support was formed to strengthen their active participation in self-care: execution of interventions based on adolescents' active involvement; a combination of occupational therapy specified approaches (using visual-verbal cues, chaining teaching, and time visualization).

Abstract:
The inclusion of cognitive symptoms in the DSM-IV criteria for major depressive and manic episodes highlight the importance of cognition in both of these psychiatric disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). For example, criteria for diagnosis of these conditions include a diminished ability to concentrate and indecisiveness. In addition, numerous studies have demonstrated wide-ranging cognitive deficits in depression (for example Elliott et al. 1996; Purcell et al. 1997; Murphy et al. 2003) and mania (Goldberg et al. 1993; Murphy et al. 1999, 2001; Sweeney et al. 2000). These include deficits in early information processing (Tsourtos et al. 2002), recollection memory (MacQueen et al. 2002) and planning (Elliott et al. 1996) as well as affective biases (Murphy et al. 1999) and abnormal responses to negative feedback (Elliott et al. 1996, 1997; Murphy et al. 2003). Some residual deficits are also evident in a proportion of remitted subjects, even when controlling for mood (for example, Clark et al. 2002).

Abstract:
With the recent extraordinary move by pharmaceutical giant Merck to pull its top-selling drug Vioxx from the worldwide market, the importance of protecting the public from potentially serious drug related side effects has taken center stage. As the news media highlights the cardiac dangers for patients taking COX-2 inhibitors, it has become apparent that clinical research around the world is in need of more methodological rigor. Clinical research could be enhanced if the contributions and divergent thought processes of field based disciplines are included in the development of these research protocols. As this global debate ensues, it is timely to consider how anthropologists can take a more active role to improve the design, execution, and coordination of clinical trials domestically and abroad. Recently, the Society for Medical Anthropology has advocated that anthropologists participate in shaping the ethical landscape of basic, applied, and clinical research. In an article called, "Bioethics and Anthropology: A Call for partnership." Kathleen M. MacQueen, Ph.D., MPH raises the important question: "How do we protect against exploitation without unduly constraining much needed health research that could, in fact, benefit vulnerable populations?"

Brown, Jonathan. "Obligations, consent and contracts in Scots law: re-analysing the basis of medical malpractice liability in light of Montgomery v Lanarkshire Health Board." Legal Studies 41, no. 1 (January 18, 2021): 156–76. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/lst.2020.40.

Abstract:
AbstractProfessors MacQueen and Thomson have defined ‘contract’, within Scots law, as denoting ‘an agreement between two or more parties having the capacity to make it, in the form demanded by law, to perform, on one side or both, acts which are not trifling, indeterminate, impossible or illegal’. This definition reflects the fact that Scottish contracts are underpinned by consent, rather than by ‘consideration’. This, naturally, has the potential to be of great significance within the context of physician/patient relationships, particularly since the 2006 case of Dow v Tayside University Hospitals NHS Trust acknowledged that these relationships could be contractual in nature. This observation is of renewed importance since the landmark decision in Montgomery v Lanarkshire Health Board, which found that physicians must ensure that they obtain full and freely given ‘informed consent’ from their patients, prior to providing medical services. In light of the present medical regime which requires ‘doctor and patient [to] reach agreement on what should happen’, the basis of liability for medical negligence, in Scotland, requires reanalysis: ‘To have a contract only when the patient pays is not consistent with a legal system which has no doctrine of consideration in contract’.

Abstract:
Indigenous learners of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) have historically not been the central focus of TESOL expertise here in Australia, or overseas. Despite moves towards inclusion increasing over the last two decades, there is an ongoing tendency for Indigenous EAL/D learners to remain on the periphery of current TESOL advocacy, research and practices in Australia. They are still often overlooked, as identification processes and support settings for migrant and refugee services are mismatched to Indigenous EAL/D learning contexts. Indigenous EAL/D learners, especially with un-/under-recognised contact languages (creoles and related varieties), can remain invisible in classrooms with mainstream curriculum and assessment practices (Angelo, 2013; Angelo & Hudson, 2018; Gawne et al., 2016; Macqueen et al., 2019). Hence, we argue that understanding and consideration of Indigenous EAL/D learners’ needs should become a priority in TESOL initiatives. This paper aims to place Indigenous EAL/D learners at the centre by alerting the TESOL field to a recent body of research and development on new Indigenous contact languages and whole class EAL/D teaching and assessment practices. Clarifying substantial issues and providing solutions, the paper makes Indigenous EAL/D its central focus, highlighting areas that otherwise result in “forgettings” about needs particular to Indigenous EAL/D learners. Thus informed, the Australian TESOL profession will surely include First Nations EAL/D learners at the heart of future discourse and initiatives.
