Abstract:
George Leslie Mackay (1844-1901), the first Presbyterian missionary to northern Taiwan, is considered to be one of the most important persons who influence the development of education and medicine in Taiwan. Recently, the manuscripts written by Mackay which detailed his work from 1871 to 1901 in Taiwan have been computerized and published as Mackays diaries. Researchers who are interested in historical topics concerning religious, educational and medical development in Taiwan hence concentrate their attention on these materials. However, little research applied computational techniques to analyze the content of the diaries. That motivated us to apply text mining techniques to explore the content of diaries. The content analysis methodology was used in this research to unveil the context of Mackays missionary work in northern Taiwan. Finally, the context was presented by data visualization techniques.

Abstract:
Clusters often grow by adding concentric layers of atoms in such a way that the overall symmetry of the cluster is left unchanged. Icosahedral shell structure was first envisioned by Mackay1 while working on the difficult geometric problem of sphere packing. Shells with icosahedral symmetry have since been identified in clusters composed of inert-gas atoms,2–4 metal atoms,5,6 and even complex molecules. In this report experimental evidence will be presented for shell structures based on geometries other than the Mackay icosahedra. The results which will be discussed include: (a) octahedral shells in Al and In clusters, (b) non-Mackay-like icosahedral shells of metal deposited expitaxially on a C60 molecule and (c) new data on very large cubic shells of alkali halides. In all these cases, the evidence for shells consists of mass spectrometric anomalies that appear periodically when plotted on a (mass)1/3 scale. Each geometry is associated with a unique periodicity.

Abstract:
Kata Kunci: Rinosinusitis kronis, biofilm bakteri, tube method, skor Lund-Mackay ABSTRACT Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses with the symptoms duration more than 12 weeks. Many conditions have been linked to its pathogenesis such as bacterial and fungal infection, superantigens and biofilm. Many studies showed the presence of bacterial biofilms in patients with CRS. Bacterial biofilms can facilitate the resistance to antibiotics. Paranasal sinuses (PNS) CT scan is the method of choice for radiological diagnosis of CRS. Lund and Mackay has developed a scoring system based on the CT finding to assess the quantification of inflammatory process in PNS. Some research suggested that patients with bacterial biofilms have higher Lund-Mackay score pre-operatively. Purpose: To determine the role of bacterial biofilms to the severity of CRS according to Lund-Mackay score. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with 48 CRS patient’s sample. Nasal discharges were taken by swab in middle meatal using sterile cotton buds, followed by identification of bacteria and detection of bacterial biofilms using tube method. Lund-Mackay score was counted from coronal section of PNS CT Scan. Data was analyzed by Fisher’s exact test. Results: Proportion of patients CRS with high Lund-Mackay score was more common in patient with biofilm (46.2%) compared to patients without biofilm (44.4%). Statistically, there was no significant difference of Lund-Mackay score between patient with biofilm and without biofilm (p=1.00). Conclusion: There was no relationship between the bacterial biofilm with the severity of CRS according to Lund-Mackay score. Keywords: Chronic rhinosinusitis, bacterial biofilm, tube method, Lund-Mackay scores

The Packing Features of Mackay and Pseudo Mackay Clusters in Al Based Approximants to Icosahedral Phases Are Surveyed. The Cubic Approximants of α-AlMnSi, AlReSi, and α-(Al,Si)CuFe Indicate Typical Mackay Clusters Composed by the Dense Icosahedral Shell Packing. On the other Hand, the Cubic Approximants of α-Alcuru and α-(Al,Si)CuFe and the Non-Cubic Approximants of Ir9Al28, χ-AlPdRe, and R-AlPdCo Shows so-Called Pseudo Mackay Clusters in which the Icosahedral Packing Feature Is Disappeared at their First Shells. The Distorted First Shells Represent a Variation of Pseudo Mackay Clusters, which Could Be Classified into Three Subgroups Based on the Symmetry.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT James A. Mackay was a decorated World War II veteran, who returned to Georgia in 1945, determined to make a difference in the segregated world of Georgia politics. He was a staunch opponent of Georgia’s county unit system that entrenched political power in rural counties. From 1950 through 1964 he was a state house member who fought to keep Georgia public schools open in the face of political opposition to desegregation. Elected to Congress in 1964, he was one of two deep-South congressmen who voted in favor of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. In 1967 he co-founded the Georgia Conservancy. For the next 25 years he was Georgia’s leading environmentalist. This thesis explores Mackay’s life from 1919-1950 and the significance of his parents, his experiences at Emory University, World War II, his legal challenge to the county unit system, and his role in writing Who Runs Georgia?

Beard, Ellen Leslie. "Rob Donn MacKay : finding the music in the songs." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20991.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the musical world and the song compositions of eighteenth-century Sutherland Gaelic bard Rob Donn MacKay (1714-1778). The principal focus is musical rather than literary, aimed at developing an analytical model to reconstruct how a non-literate Gaelic song-maker chose and composed the music for his songs. In that regard, the thesis breaks new ground in at least two ways: as the first full-length study of the musical work of Rob Donn, and as the first full-length musical study of any eighteenth-century Scottish Gaelic poet. Among other things, it demonstrates that a critical assessment of Rob Donn merely as a “poet” seriously underestimates his achievement in combining words and music to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. The study also illustrates how widely melodic material circulated in eighteenth-century Scotland through aural transmission, easily crossing between languages and between instrumental and vocal music. The thesis includes a musical biography, a review of sources and commentary on Rob Donn, an introduction to relevant theoretical concepts in ethnomusicology and related fields, and a survey of eighteenth-century Scottish music, followed by several chapters analyzing the music of one hundred songs by topic (elegies; social and political commentary; love, courtship and weddings; satire and humor; and praise, nature and sea songs). The study shows that Rob Donn borrowed tunes for 67 of these songs from earlier sources (45% from Gaelic song, 25% from Scots song, 12% from English or Irish song, and 18% from instrumental tunes). It then provides evidence that he composed the melodies of 33 songs, examining in detail how he adapted earlier musical models and created musical settings to reinforce aspects of his poetic message. It also analyzes the musical features of all 100 songs, providing charts summarizing their vocal range, musical meter, scales and tonality. The thesis is accompanied by two appendices, one containing 121 musical settings of the 100 songs, and the other containing their complete texts with English translations (most translated here for the first time).

Norman, David A. "Mind, body, and the philosophical theology of Donald M. MacKay." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30590.

Full text
Abstract:
For D.M. MacKay, the notion of complementary descriptions was a very powerful though somewhat controversial logical tool. As a brain scientist with strong philosophical and religious interests, MacKay used this tool to bring together aspects of his thinking that others in his position often allow to remain disparate. His primary use of this tool was to understand the relationship between physiological brain descriptions on the one hand and the psychological and spiritual descriptions of cognitive psychology and theological anthropology on the other. He also argued, more broadly, for the complementary relationship between science and theology and, more narrowly, for the complementary relationship between deterministic ‘observer-only’ descriptions and libertarian ‘agent-oriented’ descriptions. He called this complementarity-based world view ‘Comprehensive Realism’. The research hypothesis of this thesis will be that Comprehensive Realism offers a way of dealing with the problem known in contemporary Anglo/American philosophy as ‘the mind/body problem’ that is fully compatible with evangelical Christian theology. In the first two chapters, we will introduce the mind/body problem as it has presented itself to the Christian Church throughout history with special attention to the modern philosophical debate as it progressed throughout D.M. MacKay’s career. In chapters three, four and five, we will discuss MacKay’s doctrine of logical complementarity and how he applied this concept to the mind/body problem and the closely related philosophical debate over freedom and determinism. Since contemporary debate over the mind/body problem among Christian philosophical theologians has centred around individuals eschatology, in chapters six and seven we will discuss MacKay’s limited treatment of the bodily resurrection and, in response to several theories that have been put forward since MacKay’s death, propose a more extended Comprehensive Realist account based upon the fundamental principles of MacKay’s philosophical theology.

Mackay, Clive. "Individual characteristics and safety behaviour in a petrochemical company / C. Mackay." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4611.

Full text
Abstract:
Organisations all over the world have attempted to decrease at–risk behaviour by targeting at–risk acts, exclusive of safe acts, and using corrective feedback, reprimands, or disciplinary actions to motivate behaviour change. Research has shown that this approach was useful but did not improve since it was a reactive approach and not proactive. In an attempt to stem the tide of safety related incidence they have implemented Behaviour–based Safety. However, as is the case with other initiatives, this one also showed early results but started to plateau towards to end. Aside from safety behaviour, demographic variables and constructs such as sense of Self–esteem, Self–efficacy and Work Locus of Control have a direct effect on the associated safety behaviour of employees. These styles may either be effective or ineffective, or have a direct impact on the demonstrated safety behaviour within the petrochemical company. The purpose of this research study was to determine the possible relationship between individual characteristics, specifically Self–esteem, Self–efficacy and Work Locus of Control, and safety behaviour. A convenience survey design was used. The sample of 201 represented managers, supervisors and employees in a petrochemical company. A battery of four questionnaires were utilised, namely Self–esteem, the Generalised Perceived Self–efficacy Scale (GPSES), the Work Locus of Control Scale (WLOC) and a Safety Behaviour scale specifically designed for this study. In this research study, individual characteristics and safety behaviour is conceptualised. Individuals with a high self–esteem may have an accurate, justified, balanced appreciation of their worth or value as a person and their successes and competencies. Self–efficacy can be conceptualised as a general, stable trait, which relates to individuals' beliefs regarding the ability to mobilise their motivation, cognitive resources and actions to comply with demands from a situation. In respect of locus of control it refers to individuals' beliefs regarding their behaviour and the outcomes thereof. Individuals with an internal locus of control believe that outcomes in their lives are the result of their own internal attributes, as opposed to individuals with an external locus of control who believe that outcomes in their lives are beyond their control. Cronbach alpha coefficients and factor analysis were used to determine the reliability and validity of the tests. Descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, skewness and kurtosis) were used in the compiling of the profile of safety behaviour and individual characteristics as manifested in the group. In summary, results of the present study indicate that Self–esteem, Work Locus of Control, and Generalised Self–efficacy are significant predictors of safety behaviour. However, there is much to be known about the exact nature of the traits (whether or not these are indicators of the broader core self–evaluations construct) and the processes by which they affect these outcomes. In light of the similar correlations of the traits with satisfaction and performance observed here, and the high correlations among the traits, future research considering these traits together appears warranted. Recommendations for further research were made, as well as recommendations with regard to the company concerned.

Bicket, Juliet Linden. "A 'God-ordained web of creation' : the faithful fictions of George Mackay Brown." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3080/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis represents the first extensive examination of the ‘faithful fictions’ of the Orkney writer George Mackay Brown (1921-1996). Until now, critical appreciations of the Catholic imagination informing Brown’s opus have been vague and Brown has been seen as a throwback; his Catholicism only part of a reactionary impulse that denies modernity a place in his oeuvre. Through a thematic critical analysis of four major strands of Brown’s corpus that display his Catholic imagination, it is contended that Brown has been misunderstood by the Scottish literary-critical tradition, and that his creative work on religious subjects is diverse, experimental and devotional. The thesis provides a biography of Brown’s faith. It looks at his conversion accounts, and it discusses the interaction between these and other accounts of (spiritual) autobiography. The thesis looks in a detailed way at three mediators of grace in Brown’s faithful fictions: the Virgin Mary, St Magnus, and Christ, whose nativity Brown frequently depicts. By discussing their different roles, depictions and the various literary forms that tell their stories, this study will discover the ways in which Brown encapsulates his Catholic faith in his creative work. The thesis questions whether Catholicism harms his literary output, as some critics have suggested, and shows the ways in which Brown’s writing interacts with other Catholic literature – old and new, at home and abroad. Manuscripts, including several unpublished poems, plays and stories, will be referenced throughout, as will rare and unseen correspondence. The thesis takes in the entire scope of Brown’s body of work and is not limited to a single mode or genre in his corpus. Ultimately, this study contends that Brown is an excellent case-study of the neglected Catholic writer in twentieth-century Scotland, and that there is much work to be done in appraising the Catholic imaginations of many post-Reformation Scottish Catholic writers.

Baker, Timothy C. "Haven in the Bay : problems of community in the novels of George Mackay Brown." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/2229.

Full text
Abstract:
The novels of George Mackay Brown have often been read as upholding a traditional ideal of community as that which is singular and complete, a community which exists outside time and history. As this thesis will show, however, Brown emphasises themes of community, history and myth in his work not in order to validate them without reservation, but to question what use these ideas may have in contemporary life. By reading his novels in conjunction with the work of continental theorists ranging from Martin Heidegger to Jean-Luc Nancy, it becomes apparent that Brown critically explores a post-Kantian modernity in which metaphysical or faith-based foundations are no longer possible. Brown's greatest theme throughout his work is not only how community is built and maintained, but also how it is destroyed, and what life remains after that destruction. Brown continually problematises the idea of community in order to show both its relevance and impossibility in modern society. In separately regarding each of Brown's novels in length, this thesis will highlight the various approaches Brown takes to community: the potentially romantic view of community in Beside the Ocean of time; the centrality of sacrifice for the establishing of community in Magnus; and the interections between community and history in Time in a Red Coat, and Vinland. The thesis then turns directly to the question of the relation between individuals and community in Greenvoe, and ends with a discussion of the way in which Brown portrays his own relation to community in his nonfiction and autobiographical writings. Throughout the thesis, the prevailing notion of Brown as a parochial or naive writer will be continually questioned. In addition, by integrating a wide variety of continental theorists into a discussion of Brown's work, this thesis will explore new opportunities for the general study of contemporary Scottish fiction. By revealing Brown to be a more nuanced thinker of the relation between modernity and community than previous critics have allowed, this thesis will both offer a new perspective on Brown's novels and open new paths for the discussion of the role of community in modern literature.

Abstract:

The A. Murray MacKay Bridge (MacKay Bridge) opened to traffic in 1970 and carries four lanes of traffic over the Halifax Harbour between Dartmouth and downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The Bridge's main cable has been opened for detailed visual inspections several times beginning in 2002. The Owner, Halifax Harbour Bridges, retained COWI North America to perform a strength evaluation in accordance with the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 534– Guidelines for Inspection and Strength Evaluation of Suspension Bridge Parallel Wire Cables. As the MacKay Bridge main cable is composed of 61 parallel strands with helicoidal wires, the NCHRP 534 approach (intended for parallel wires) was modified to perform the strength evaluation for cables with helicoidal wires. Based on the analysis performed, it was determined that the main cable of the MacKay Bridge has adequate capacity at this time. Additional measures to protect the cable, mainly through dehumidification, could be considered to prevent further deterioration of the main cable and extend the service life of the cable and therefore the bridge.

Abstract:
Continued development of the oilsands in the Fort McMurray area of Alberta lead to a need for the MacKay River Pipeline. This heavy oil pipeline provides long-term, cost-effective transportation for production from the MacKay River area. The pipeline is designed to transport bitumen with little or no dilution (dry bitumen). In order to operate without diluent, the bitumen must be heated. Heat must be retained using a continuous layer of insulation, which ensures that viscosity remains low. The high operating temperature and the environment, through which the pipeline passes, were major challenges encountered during the design and construction phases. This paper focuses on the design, selection criteria, and testing of the coating system and discusses the important aspects of construction.

Abstract:
Celebrated as a mechanism for engaging ‘real’ projects much of the contemporary design-build literature foregrounds the action-learning embedded in the physical act of making a piece of architecture at full-scale. Participating students and faculty comments regularly highlight the direct encounter with the materials and method of construction as well as the collaborative, cross-disciplinary nature of community engagement. Brian Mackay-Lyons, founder of the Ghost Lab in Nova Scotia, argues that “Pragmatism is the best teacher” and “Technology is best learned by making” and he links design-build to, “The apprenticeship model of architectural education—its roots in the master-builder tradition of the Middle Ages.” (Mackay-Lyons 2008, p 135 and p138) However, the conventional fixation on the construction process and final products obscures the complex, often unappetizing, ‘behind the scenes’ logistics necessary to implement, and sustain, new pedagogies.
