Abstract:
Macau was the first port on the China coast to come under the influence of a foreign power and will be the last to return to Chinese sovereignty. Its historical importance in the early transmission of culture between East and West is well known. After reaching its height as the centre of such contact in the second half of the 16th century Macau, like Portugal, languished in international affairs albeit with subsequent brief periods of relative importance.

Abstract:
The return of Macau to the People’s Republic of China was nearly fifteen years ago but only recently have researchers been interested in studying the impact of the handover. This article reflects on the literature of Macao, focusing on texts exploring the displacement of poets from Portugal, Australia, and China to Macau. Poetry has been a crucial form of production that has showcased the social changes of this multicultural place. Although it is difficult to characterize a specific Macao way of life, during the transition period between 1987 and 1999, many poets sought to show the conflicts that occurred in the development of this special administrative region. This article attempts to analyze and characterize literary representations of recent Macao poetry published in Chinese, English, and Portuguese languages in order to define differences as well as a common sensibility.

Macau is a 400-year-old Portuguese colony in the Pearl River Delta in southeastern China. Portugal returned the colony to China on 20 December 1999. In light of its history, Macau is an interesting case study of how colonial policies affect adoption of new technologies such as the Internet. Companhia de Telcomunicações de Macau is the only company licensed to provide telecommunications services in Macau. This study examines: (1) the relationship between the Macau government and CTM as an ISP; (2) the relationship between CTM and other Internet companies in Macau; and (3) the relationship between Internet companies and users in Macau.

Abstract:
In the early stages of the China trade European traders knew nothing of Chinese, while the Chinese traders were equally ignorant of European languages. It was in this setting that pidgin languages developed for interethnic communication. While the role of Chinese Pidgin English in the China trade is fairly well-understood (see Baker 1987; Baker & Mühlhäusler 1990; Bolton 2003; Ansaldo 2009), the use of pidgin Portuguese is poorly documented and our understanding of it is correspondingly limited (Tryon, Mühlhäusler & Baker 1996). In this article we discuss what can be learnt from a newly transcribed phrasebook — the Compendium of Assorted Phrases in Macau Pidgin. We first review the use of contact varieties of Portuguese in the China trade. We then introduce the contents and layout of the Compendium and explain the transcription practices adopted for the phrasebook. Grammatical features contained in the phrasebook are examined and illustrated. We conclude with an examination of the significance of the Compendium in enriching our understanding of pidgin Portuguese and its relationship with Macau Creole Portuguese as well as Chinese Pidgin English.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT - Gastrointestinal parasites in dogs from Macau, China - Dogs are currently considered one of the most popular pets, as they promote the physical and psychological well-being of their owners, but their role in the transmission of zoonotic infectious and parasitic diseases is well reported. Gastrointestinal parasites are often underestimated and their impact on animal welfare and public health should not be ignored. In Macau, more and more households are adopting a dog as a pet, but many are unaware of the dog's role in the transmission of zoonotic parasitic diseases. Data on the epidemiological situation in China is scarce and non-existent in the case of Macau, thus the present study was developed with the intention of filling this gap. Between December 2016 and February 2017, 118 faecal samples were collected, of which 51 belonged to household dogs and 67 to shelter dogs. All samples were submitted to perform coprological exams, which included a faecal smear, passive flotation technique and the modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining technique. The overall prevalence of parasitism was 57% and the parasites identified were Ancylostoma spp. (51%), Uncinaria stenocephala (19%), Toxocara canis (2%), Giardia sp. (5%), Cystoisospora ohioensis (2%), Cystoisospora canis (1%) and Dipylidium caninum (1%). No Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were detected. Dogs originating from shelters showed a higher prevalence of parasitism (82%) compared to household dogs (24%). The study revealed a high global prevalence of parasitism and the identification of zoonotic species signals the importance of adopting appropriate prophylactic measures and educate owners and caregivers of the shelters in order to reduce environmental contamination and avoid zoonotic transmission. The high prevalence in these shelter dogs in Macau, indicates that there is a need for more effective and better control and prophylactic measures.

Full text
Abstract:
The increase of saltwater intrusion in recent years in the Pearl River Delta, has threatened the freshwater supply in the surrounding regions, especially the cities of Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Guangzhou in Guangdong Province and Macau. A numerical modeling system using nested grids was developed to simulate the salinity distribution in the Pearl River delta, and then to investigate the salt transport process and calculate the salt flux for each outlet in the Pearl River estuary. The model forcing functions consist of tidal elevations along the open boundaries and freshwater inflows from the major tributaries in the Pearl River system. The model simulation results are in qualitative agreement with the available field data. The salt flux of the Pearl River delta during the spring tide in dry season is up to 19.5×106ton/ tidal period, while the salt flux during neap tide is only 5.1×106ton/ tidal period, 26.18% of that during the spring tide. The salt flux in Dahu and Guanchong stations are the highest among the stations of the eight outlets, indicating that Humen and Yamen are the most important entries for saltwater intrusion in the Pearl River delta. The most important reason is that the ratio of stream flow to tide flow is different for each outlet. The ratios at Humen and Yamen are the smallest among the eight outlets (<1 for each month), while the ratio at Modaomen is the biggest (>1 for each month), which leads to the lowest salt flux at Modaomen. Salinity distribution in different time periods shows that saltwater intrusion during the spring tide is much more serious than neap tide, and water in many cities during this time period will be unavailable for drinking, irrigation or for ecological purpose.

Abstract:
Consequent to a big gas station fire in Macau and another recent one affected by a nearby explosion in a fireworks factory in China, there are concerns on the fire safety issues of gas stations in urban areas. Those two incidents were not too terrible but the situation would be much worse if there was strong wind, especially in a dense urban area where buildings are closely built together. There are many gas stations built within residential areas in Hong Kong. Wind-induced air movement is a transient phenomenon which depends not only on the wind speeds measured at some designated sites, but is also strongly affected by the surrounding environment. For a gas station located adjacent to a taller building, turbulent effects due to incident wind fields would be important. This is not just a safety problem of the gas station, nor for any single building. A risk management system should be worked out by the Authority in the estate district, suburb, or even the whole city. The problem must be considered carefully for cities with dense population and numerous highrise buildings. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a suitable tool for hazard assessment on the spreading of smoke and heat. In this paper, the wind-induced air flow in a gas station fire next to a building was studied by CFD. The CFD simulator selected is the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) version 3.01. Acoustic filtering technique was applied to remove the flow with high Mach number and large-eddy simulations (LES) were applied to model smaller turbulent scales. Different scenarios on the gas station position, building height and distance away from a vertical wall of the building were simulated. Wind effect was simulated by taking the incident air flow as a parabolic boundary layer. The results are very useful for working out risk management in case of accidents. Note that smoke or even flame will spread by following the wind-induced air motion.
