The MacArthur Story Stem Battery (MSSB) is a technique that combine the histories complement and the symbolic play, it can be use with children from 4 years old and allow to know the resolution for a diary conflict.
This instrument uses the family dolls to facilitate the children's histories comprehension. Children use their narrative language to complete and resolve the history, so the language and the children's play capacity could be analyzed.
This thesis shows you a recopilation about play classic conceptualization beginning with psychoanalysis, cognitive theory, Russian school and the children not directed play therapy. Also it presents the instruments that have used play as a diagnostic and finally there is a exposition about the narrative language children analysis.
This work uses the MSSB to evaluate normal children and children with development delay between 4 and 6 years old. The objective is to know each group conflict resolution and the special characteristic into the development delay group.
During the MSSB application all children were video tape recorded to codify the answers. We have two type of answers, the prosocial answers and the no social answers, we also codify the consequences when the children give a no social answers. Finally we codify the kind of play and ansiety level during the session.
The results shown that the prosocial answers percentage were higher in the normal children group than in the children with development delay. When children's answer were no social the principal consequence was punishment (equal percentage in both groups). The most frequent character was the mother and her representation was positive in both groups. The predominant kind of play was the simple play (when the child represents an action) follow by the symbolic play and the exploratory play, which was only present in the development delay children group and was associate to attention deficit disorder. Finally the ansiety level in the normal children group was very low, while in the development delay children group we found some ansiety and inhibition cases.
