Abstract: The novel Motta Coqueiro or A Pena de Morte by José do Patrocínio was published for the first time in a serial, spread at the newspaper Gazeta de Notícias from 22nd of December, 1877 to 3rd of March, 1878. The work has a narrow connection with the Press, for it was inspired and based in a true story reported by several newspapers in 1852: the murder of eight people in an aggregate family. The episode ended up with the capital punishment of an influential farmer named Manuel da Motta Coqueiro, who lived in the region and was accused of being responsible for the crime. In this dissertation will be in evidence the existent relation between Literature and Press in the first novel written by José do Patrocínio. In order to do it ,some newspapers articles concerning to the case Motta Coqueiro from 1852 to 1855, were analysed, as well as the essays that resumed this matter during the year of 1877. At this period, the serial novel written by José do Patrocínio started to be edited daily, presenting the Coqueiro's execution as a judicial mistake

This dissertation aims to reflect the changes of beneficiaries and forms of occupation of the existing lots in the settlement Capelinha, located in Concei??o de Macabu, north region of the State of Rio de Janeiro. It supposes that the beneficiaries changes process is related to the economic, social and political situation that is found insert the settlement, offering information of social process that occur in the interior of the settlements, not always noticed. In this way, different beneficiaries changes modalities are described, such as: the abandonment; the expulsion, the exchanges of lot, the individual and collective invasion, the judicial eviction, the sale of lots, the substitution of title, like others. Besides, it relates some characteristics that ought to determine the forms of occupation of the lots, sucks as the mechanisms of decision and the logics of people settled, defined in the Laws of the Settlements , that is the assembly of rules established and questioned during the past of time. From the company with the settlement people and the analysis of primary documents and the minutes of the Association for eight years, it was possible to establish alterations in the beneficiaries changes modalities, during the three phases systematized, in consequence of the capacity of organization and social cohesion and of the quality and frequency of the actions of the administrative organ of the settlement.

Nichols, Stephanie. "Analysis of Oocyte Quality in the Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta)." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2007. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1078.

Abstract:
Many primate populations face the threat of extinction due to habitat loss, intensive agriculture, hunting for meat, the pet trade and/or use in traditional medicines. An alternative approach to in situ conservation includes gene banking and the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Although many of these 'high-tech' solutions have not yet been proven viable for pragmatic wildlife conservation, basic research and development of these emerging tools can provide necessary information needed to optimize these techniques and institute ART as a routine practice in conservation efforts. A severely limiting factor in the successful application of ARTs is the availability of mature developmentally competent oocytes. Oocyte maturation involves many nuclear and cytoplasmic factors, which can be affected by maturation conditions and female age. In vitro maturation does not have the same success rate across species studied. In primates especially, IVM oocytes exhibit reduced developmental capacity upon fertilization when compared to in vivo matured (IVO) oocytes. This study aimed to investigate possible causes of reduced developmental capacity of primate IVM oocytes using the rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) as a model. Research efforts included investigation of ovarian senescence, oocyte karyotype and spindle morphology, and establishment of an optimal sperm cryopreservation protocol for use in IVF. Histological examination of the rhesus ovary demonstrated an age-related pattern of follicle depletion similar to that described in the human ovary. Oocyte karyotype analysis revealed a significant effect of IVM on the frequency of hyperhaploidy. In addition, immunostaining and confocal microscopy demonstrated a significant increase of anomalous chromosome congression on the oocyte metaphase II spindle equator in relation to IVM and donor female age. These results indicate that IVM can produce serious, if not lethal consequences for embryo development. This study presents baseline data on ovarian aging in the rhesus macaque and aspects of nuclear maturation during macaque IVM that may contribute to the design of primate oocyte recovery plans. Implementation of either of two sperm cryopreservation methods originally developed for rhesus and vervet monkeys will aid future investigation of the developmental capacity of IVM oocytes.

Abstract:
This thesis, by historicizing the term macabre from its origins in the Late Middle Ages, seeks to understand the repercussions of both literature and iconography involving the macabre during the 19th Century, a time when the medieval imaginary was revived through Romanticism. The manifestations of this romantic sensibility as respects to death in the 19th Century in Brazil are also investigated, in an attempt to analyze its influences in Brazilian poetry and prose. The poem A orgia dos duendes, by Bernardo Guimarães, is given special attention in this investigation, as it is deemed the most significant example of the Danse Macabre in Brazil.

Kumar, Ajith. "The ecology and population dynamics of the lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) in South India." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1987. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/283655.

Full text
Abstract:
The lion-tailed macaque is dispersed in patches of rain forest along the Western Ghat mountains in India. Its endangered status is the cumulative result of the geoclimatic history of the region, the evolutionary history of the species, and recent human activity. In this light, the objective of this project was to examine the variation in the demographic parameters of the species, and their ecological and behaviour correlates. Demographic data collected over a period of six years from a wild population in the Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary (Tamil Nadu, India) showed that the lion-tailed macaques have a high age at first birth, a low birth rate and a high survival rate. The growth rate of a group and birth rate were decreasing functions of the group size. In the main study group there were significant differences in the activity, feeding and ranging patterns with a change in the group size. As the group became larger, it spent more time searching for food, but there was a decrease in feeding on animal matter, and no difference in time spent on plant foods. There was also an expansion of dietary range, and probably a reduction in dietary quality. Less time was spent on resting, but more time was spent on agonistic interactions. As the group became larger, the distance travelled, and the area covered each day, month and year increased. Spatial variation in the use of the habitat decreased, along with the overlap of areas used on successive days. This variation represented the differential regulation of ranging required by different group sizes. Such a regulation of ranging operates within the constraints placed by the availability of major food trees. The reproductive behaviour of the lion-tailed macaque is characterised by a relatively high adult female/male ratio, a high synchrony of female sexual cycles, and sexual harassment which increases in proportion to the number of adult females with sexual swellings. These factors might cause a suppression of conception by some ovulating females, and thus result in a decrease in birth rate, in a medium-sized one-male group. It is unlikely that the same effect would be evident across all the range of group sizes. The relevance of the differences between individuals to the above findings is examined briefly in the concluding chapter. The demographic processes expressed at the group level, and their ecological and behavioural correlates, could form a part of a model of the dynamics of a population composed of a number of such groups.

Abstract:
Fifteen uterus of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were used, collected from 5 nulliparous, 5 primaparous and 5 pluriparous individuals. All females were sexually mature, they were 38-87 months of age and weighed between 4,9 to 7,39 Kg. All animals were submitted to study topography, biometry of the organs, light microscopy and quantification of collagen in the myometrium. The uterus is located in the pelvis on the vagina between the bladder and rectum. The uterus has a simple type, characterized by a globular background, located on the junction of the fallopian tubes, hollow, elongated and pear-shaped contour. Grossly it can be divided into four parts: body, bottom, isthmus and cervix. No differences were observed macroscopic and topography between nulliparous, rimiparous and pluriparous. The total length of the uterus in nulliparous females had a mean of 4,12 ± 0,2 cm in primiparous 4,32 ± 0,26 cm and 5,14 ± 0,71 cm in pluriparous. Comparing the measurements among the three categories, it was observed that the sows have greater measures. The endometrial epithelium is formed by a simple prismatic and a lamina propria containing the endometrial glands, wich also has a simple prismatic epithelium. In all studied animals the endometrial glands were simple and straight tubular. Regarding the distribution of collagen around the bay. The cervix is composed of a simple prismatic epithelium, has a few smooth muscle fibers and consists mainly of dense connective tissue. The percentage of collagen found in the myometrium of the nulliparous females had an average of 26, 32 ± 0, 82, 29, 07 ± 1, 01 in primiparous and pluriparous 38,93 ± 1,07, through the staining method of Picrosirius Red.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The ability to infer the invisible displacement of objects has long been thought to elude most species with the exception of humans and great apes. However, in recent years, a number of researchers have proposed that this elusive capacity, rather than reflecting profound differences in the conceptual abilities of monkeys and other nonprimates, may instead reflect differences in processing capacities (such as inhibition and working memory). This thesis investigated knowledge of occluded object movements involving gravity, in rhesus and stumptail macaques (Macaca mulatta and arctoides), and two- and three-year-old children (Homo sapiens). In the first part of the thesis, using manual search tasks, a behavioural analysis revealed a number of biases that influence search on invisible displacement tasks, but also showed that contrary to the contentions of some authors, these biases do not mask the existence of correct representations. One study did reveal how seemingly mundane differences between tasks might lead to markedly different patterns of search and emergence of biases. In the second part of the thesis, in the first direct test of the prediction-postdiction hypothesis, an analysis of anticipatory eye gaze suggested that an inability to predict the location of an object does not account for the looking-searching dissociation that has become so prevalent in both the developmental and comparative literature. In attempting to bring together the findings from all the chapters, a framework is suggested in which representations are viewed as differing in strength such that the strength of a representation may determine whether or not a pre-existing bias surfaces in behaviour.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on the analysis of Macau’s guidebooks, seeking for the focal point of each period and reconstructing the respective images of the city through the sentences. The guidebooks of Macau, as the documentary sources, reflect the cultural, social and urban changes of the XX and XXI centuries. The study applies the main methodology of the quantitative analysis of Eduardo Brito Henriques (1996), so that the focal points of guides can be found. Besides, from the opinions transmitted by sentences of the guidebooks, the evolution of the images of the city itself can be reconstructed.

In Brazil, macaúba is considered the palmo f the greatest geographic dispersion, occuring naturally in mosto f the national territory, mainly in the Cerrado, Caatinga, Atlantic Forest and Altitude Fields biomes. Its wide distribution is related to its genetic diversity and phenotypic variability. Therefore, the objective of this work is to determine the morphophysiological, anatômical and genetic diversity among populations of macaúba from different biomes and deposited in BAG-macaúba. To evaluate the ecophysiological responses and the existence of levels of susceptibility of the populations of different sources related to water scarcity, as well as the possible mechanisms of resistance to water stress. Transpiration (E) was the only variable of the gas exchange that differed statistically from the others, being significant both in the comparison between populations and between seasons. The highest and lowest values of E were recorded for the populations of the West of Minas Gerais and the Center of Minas Gerais, respectively. The values of α, allied to A positive and maintenance of the Ci/Ca values, when falling from gs and E, show a robust biochemical photosynthesis. Under progression of water déficit in soil and in the environment, the macaúba leaf blade is able to maintain photosynthesis at positive values. The high WUE values during drought progression are also evidence of water efficiency of macaúba in maintaining photosynthesis under conditions of reduced environmental water availability. The water competency observed in macaúba enables populations to settle in nature, occupying environments whose water availability is different strategies of photosynthesis control in relation to water scarcity, observed defferentiation, with the existence of deferente physiological phenotypes. The intraspecific physiological variation observed may be a raw material for the macaúba genetics improvement program, allowing to meet the constant agricultural requirements, in line with environmental conditions
