Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Cosmological lens statistics was studied first by Turner, Ostriker, & Gott (1984), and developed by Hinshaw & Krauss (1987), Gott, Park, & Lee (1989), Turner (1990), Krauss & White (1992), and Wallington & Narayan (1993). The expected number of lensed quasars in general quasar catalogs was examined by Fukugita & Turner (1991), Kochanek (1991), and Fukugita et al. (1992), and the number expected in the HST Snapshot Survey (Bahcall et al. 1992, Maoz et al. 1992, 1993) was examined by Maoz & Rix (1939) and Kochanek (1993). In most of these studies, galaxies were assumed to be the lenses, and clusters of galaxies played only auxiliary roles. As a result, the expected number of lensed quasars with separations larger than 3 arcsec is negligibly small compared to the total number of lenses. However, about 33% of observed lensed quasars have image separations larger than 3 arcsec (Maoz et al. 1993, Refsdal & Surdej 1994). This observational fact is very important.

Abstract:

As Asher Maoz insightfully points out, governmental involvement in the ascertainment of historical truth—whether in court, by commission of inquiry, or in other ways—is directed at securing approval of a particular historical narrative, as a step toward imposing that narrative, to a greater or lesser extent, on those who disagree with it. This “official version” exists not only for the sorts of questions presented by the cases Maoz discusses, but also with respect to auto accidents, crimes of passion, and all the other historical reconstructions that form the substrate of “facts” upon which legal conclusions and enforceable judgments are predicated.

Abstract:
Rendes i despeses i 4. 2. Edifici i estructura del balneari. Descripció de les edificacions i brolladors. 3. Característiques i propietats de les aigües. Classificació de les aigües. Descripció de les propietats fisiques, químiques i medicinals. 4.
The aim of this paper is to investigate and analyze health, disease, and health care resources, in towns and cities of Valencia, during the first half of the nineteenth century. We have mainly been focused on the testimony of Pascual Madoz through "El Diccionario Geogratico-Estadistico-Historico de Espafia y sus posesiones de ultramar"; complementing and contrasting this information with literature from the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries. We have split the work into six sections: 1 st. Introduction: Objectives of the work, materials and method used. 2nd. Pascual Madoz and Dictionary. Short biography of Pascual Madoz. 3rd. Health institutions. We made a detailed description of the health institutions in the three Valencian provinces. We followed this scheme for each institution: 1. Introduction; 2. Building; 3. Incomes and expenses; 4. Organization. 4th. The Spas and medicinal waters. We collected all the spas described by Madoz. We contrasted and extended the information with: contemporary literature, the reports of the medical directors of the health resorts, and the Treatises of hydrotherapy from the eighteenth and nineteenth century. We described each spa as follows: 1. Introduction; 2. Building and structure of the Spa; 3. Water characteristics and properties; 4. The functioning of the Spa and the medicinal use of water; 5. The economic activity; 6. List of the medical directors of the Spa. 5th. Illnesses and epidemiology. We collected all the diseases listed by Madoz. We have elaborated a section about the association between tertian fevers and rice cultivation in the three provinces. We have prepared a glossary of all medical terms used in the work of Madoz. 6th. Demographic indicators. We compared demographics values evaluated by Madoz with other several contemporary censuses and with the census of2009.

Torrent, Quer Narcís. "Cartografia, pràctiques mèdiques i respostes socials a l'entorn del paludisme: Catalunya, segle XIX." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Girona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/586015.

Abstract:
The PhD dissertation starts off with the research work El paludisme a la Catalunya del segle XIX a través del Diccionario de Madoz i les Topografies Mèdiques, presented as a master’s degree thesis in 2010. By then, the thesis was already revealing some of the lines of research that eventually became the core objectives of the doctoral thesis. Therefore, this research aims first to quantify morbidity and mortality caused by paludism in Catalonia in the 19th century, second to know the strategies doctors used in their struggle against the disease, and finally to set a cartography of the country from around 1850, thus giving visibility to the present work. Beyond characterizing paludism in Catalonia, it is of our interest to write a brief chronicle on the process that led to the identification of its origins and the healing method, making especial emphasis on the introduction and usage of quinine during the treatment of the disease. The willingness to reach a more comprehensive understanding of the relative failure on the management and usage of the drug took us to do an exhaustive revision of the medical practice in Catalonia in the 18th and 19th centuries, through reliable testimony on paludism, so as to understand the epistemological fundament, which conditioned the methods used by doctors to tackle the disease

Abstract:
Even and Maoz note that by its nature, war is waged to achieve goals, and as such, there is a continuum of victory to defeat rather than a win/lose dichotomy. They discuss the varied aims Israel had when entering the Yom Kippur War, from their goals prior to the 1973 war, to their practical goals for the Yom Kippur War, as well as Egypt’s objectives. At the war’s end in 1973, both Egypt and Israel believed, justifiably, that they had won a great victory because they fought for two separate but related goals. Israel sought to remove Egypt from the circle of war, and Egypt hoped to regain territory it had lost in 1967. Even and Maoz conclude that, ultimately, everyone won the war.

Abstract:
Even and Maoz divide the Southern Command’s six-day defensive period into three sections. October 9 was a pseudodefensive during which the 143rd Division saw great violence. October 10–13 was a time of restive dormancy, and October 14 brought a role change and a reversal of fortune to the IDF. Physically, this period of the war featured low-intensity combat interspersed with furious fire at key points, while diplomatically, drama roiled, future moves were planned, and crucial issues were decided. During the division’s four days of dormancy, Sharon reorganized his brigades, absorbed reinforcements, repaired equipment, and formulated operational plans for the eventual canal crossing.

By the evening of October 12, reports surfaced of the Egyptians’ intent to dispatch commando units against various targets in order to attack the canal front and transfer armored reserves into Sinai. From that time until the October 14 sunrise, when nearly one thousand Egyptian tanks amassed on the eastern bank of the canal, the General Staff and Southern Command created a reserve force of around 750 tanks, deployed on the line from north to south. The ultimate goals of the Egyptian army’s offensive were lost to history when Egyptian president Anwar Sadat died, but Even and Maoz do their best to reconstruct the axes of the attack.

This section covers the crossing battle from the morning of October 17 through the early morning hours of October 18, when the battle ended. Even and Maoz note the lessons learned from the Chinese Farm Battle, planned and begun by the 162nd Division and fought by the 460th Brigade. Unfortunately, the paratroopers’ sacrifice did not enable the transport of the rafts to Akavish and Matzmed, and merely serves to whitewash the commanders who carelessly and irresponsibly sent fifty men to their deaths. The battle failed to achieve its mission, and in retrospect, it began before the commanders had successfully demonstrated that it was an unavoidable fight.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the coordination of various moving parts to bring the crossing battle to completion. On the morning of October 16, the roller bridge was no longer seen as a viable option for crossing the canal, and Sharon commanded the 257th Battalion to detach from the 421st Brigade and go on to Matzmed. The Unifloat rafts were in good shape, and after their arrival at Akavish 55, the 630th Bridging Battalion was ordered to Matzmed to receive further instructions from Sharon. The Crocodile envoy arrived at Matzmed around 4 a.m. and commenced crossing to the western bank at 7 a.m. According to Even and Maoz, the Crocodile rafts saved Operation Stouthearted Men, the Israel Defense Forces, and Israel itself from a catastrophic defeat.
