Abstract:
The thesis presents an opinion mining system for song lyrics, which can fetch objects of interest and opinion words about them. Finally, opinion mining result is analyzed in terms of time information and musical genre. In the process of constructing the system, many previous works are reviewed and some of them are applied to the thesis and different methods are compared for reaching a best solution (e.g. explore how to fetch objects f interest). As well, the evaluation of the system has been done by running experiments with a collection of song lyrics containing hundreds of documents. The result from the system is compared with manual identification. The evaluation result shows that the system basically can present topics of one song lyrics and opinion words about them. Finally, opinion mining result from a collection of song lyrics can be analyzed and some interesting things are presented, e.g. fetching most common topics, presenting the number of polarity words for each musical type or different year, opinion change on some common topics as time changes. Besides, we develop a program in Java for collecting song lyrics on Internet from one website. The program can help us collect thousands of song lyrics and search information of song publishing year or musical genre on Wikipedia.org. The work in opinion mining for song lyrics is few at present. The thesis finishes an exploration in the subject and the exploration is valuable and useful for future wok.

Kähäri, Malin. "Hur kan lyrik berika svenskämnet på gymnasiet? : En litteraturstudie." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Svenska språket och genusvetenskap, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-24495.

Abstract:
The study researches how lyrics as a genre could be used to enrich the Swedish education in upper secondary school, which didactic methods that can be applied to teachings of lyrics and what could be used as a good representation of lyrics for youths. The study includes a study of literature that was evaluated through a discourse analysis and interpretations of lyrical choices. The result of the study showed that lyrics can be used to enrich the didactics of the Swedish subject in upper secondary school as the language development was improved. This was shown as students who studied lyrics gets the opportunity to reflect upon both their own and others' emotions and experiences, which can be used as a tool for the development of self and identity. The study has further shown that studies of lyrics also enrich students with knowledge about important parts of the cultural inheritance and the freedom to explore language and style through the writing of their own poems. Furthermore, lyrics should be applied to a reader oriented education as it focuses on the individual readers' experience of the text, which could awaken interest and purpose for the genre. Finally, the study has shown that there are no given answers regarding what could be used as a representative lyrics for youths in the education as the genre provides the opportunity for the readers to express emotions which should be thought of as timeless and universal. Because of this, it is the teachers task to choose what could be regarded as relevant lyrics for youths based on what kind of discussion will be held and what kind of insight that should be achieved.

Abstract:
This study investigates the translation of song lyrics and presents an analysis of translation outcomes. While the majority of previous studies regarding song translation focuses on the translation of lyrics from musicals and operas, this study focuses on the translation of popular song lyrics. The lyrics of eight German songs and their English versions were analysed using the approximation approach (Franzon 2009) which divides smaller textual units into the categories paraphrase, metaphrase and addition. The target texts (henceforth TT) were also categorised according to Peter Low’s (2013) song translation categories, translation, adaptation and replacement text. The aim of this study is to determine to what degree the meaning of the source texts (henceforth ST) is transferred into the TTs and to determine how Franzon’s approximation approach can be used to determine if the TTs are translations, adaptations, or replacement texts. This study found that all TTs were mostly made up of paraphrases and metaphrases, which means that all TT derived to most parts directly from the STs i.e. the TT was written using mostly direct and oblique translations. Due to the low frequency of additions and all significant details of the STs being transferred into the TTs, all song translations analysed in this study were categorised as translations.

Pugh-Patton, Danette Marie. "Images and lyrics: Representations of African American women in blues lyrics written by black women." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2007. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd-project/3235.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine to what extent representations of double jeopardy and the stereotypical images of African American females: Mammy, Matriarch, Sapphire, and Strong Black Woman emerge in the blues lyrics of Alberta Hunter, Gertrude "Ma" Rainy, Memphis Minnie, and Victoria Spivey, using the theoretical framework of Black feminist rhetorical critique. The findings in this research entail several meanings regarding the lives of African American women during the 1920s and 1930s. Representations of racism, sexism, and classism also appear in the theme of relationships with various subthemes. The focus of this study is to explore the evolution of Black music and examine the role women have played in both the development and advancement of the blues genre. Additionally, the study will explore various concepts of cultural identity development in order to establish the process of how identity is constructed and negotiated in African Americans specifically African American women.

In a paper which appeared two years ago, I outlined some of the main features of the contemporary taarab world in Zanzibar, which is undergoing great changes due to economic, social and cultural factors (Aiello Traoré 2004a). A recent development that I highlighted is the vanishing of women\'s taarab clubs. The greater participation of women within the groups of taarab asilia has strated, in my view, an interesting confrontation between the tendency of conversation of the codes which are identified as \"traditional\" and the innovations proposed by female members in music and performance, as well as in the production of lyrics, an area where many women are now regularly involved. I will concentrate my analysis on the taarab lyrics being composed by Zanzibari women, which are of great interest because of the variety of cultural and social backgrounds, themes, techniques and poetical sensitivities.

Arthur, Peter. "The textuality of contemporary hiplife lyrics." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4889/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research looks at the textuality of hiplife – the Ghanaian version of hip hop – by investigating the hiplife discursive and non discursive practices. The thesis is that hiplife is a major platform for Ghanaian youth cultural expression. I choose the qualitative methodology because it meets the subtle demand of an enquiry on expressive culture like hiplife. Using focus group discussion, interviews and participant observation to collect data from the whole country with emphasis on the four main cities, the research analyses transcribed data and comes up with various findings. These include the fact that hiplife started with the quest of Ghanaian youth for a syncretic culture, the combination of local and foreign cultures, mediated by DJs, artistes and sites. It also reveals that it is the rhythm of the Akan drum language that provides the rhythmic complexion of hiplife. Again, as a platform for youth expression, hiplife expresses new values – new social truths, a common destiny and protest against hegemony. Furthermore, hiplife appropriates the “looking glass” concept to circulate its cultural expression and ideologies in and out of Ghana. Such a visibility is also taken advantage of by the Ghanaian women to address their gender concerns.

Dwyer, Rachel Madeline Jackson. "The Gujarati lyrics of Kavi Dayarambhai." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1995. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28906/.

Full text
Abstract:
Kavi Dayarambhai or Dayaram (1777-1852), considered to be one of the three greatest poets of Gujarati, brought to an end not only the age of the great bhakta-poets, but also the age of Gujarati medieval literature. After Dayaram, a new age of Gujarati literature and language began, influenced by Western education and thinking. The three chapters of Part I of the thesis look at the ways of approaching North Indian devotional literature which have informed all subsequent readings of Dayaram in the hundred and fifty years since his death. Chapter 1 is concerned with the treatment by Indologists of the Krsnaite literature in Braj Bhasa, which forms a significant part of Dayaram's literary antecedents. Chapter 2 then considers studies of Dayaram by Gujarati scholars which tend to focus on him as a devotee of Krsna and a member of the Pustimarga. It also looks at literary criticism of his writings in the context of the Gujarati literary world. Chapter 3 discusses Dayaram's lyrics from an Indological perspective, concentrating on form and language. Part II puts forward a new approach to a study of Dayaram's lyrics. Chapter 4 argues that these texts deserve treatment as literary texts in their own right and suggests a reading informed by the thought of Mikhail Bakhtin (1895- 1975). Chapter 5 discusses Dayaram's lyrics in the light of Bakhtin's concept of the camivalesque, Chapter 6 looks at the functions of chronotopic features in the lyrics. Part III is a selection of Dayaram's lyrics. The Gujarati texts are given in Roman transliteration, followed by literal translations into English. A full bibliography of primary and secondary sources consulted is included. The thesis introduces a poet scarcely known to western scholars and makes a selection of his work available to those who do not know Gujarati. It examines a number of approaches which have conventionally been brought to bear on literature of this kind. It finds much which is valuable in them but highlights some of their limitations for a study of this poet; a new critical approach from literary theory, using the ideas of Bakhtin (in particular those of the carnivalesque and the chronotope) allows the thesis to re-examine the position of Dayaram in the history of Gujarati literature.

Abstract:
Lyrics provide a lot of information about music since they encapsulate a lot of the semantics of songs. Such information could help users navigate easily through a large collection of songs and to recommend new music to them. However, this information is often unavailable in its textual form. To get around this problem, singing voice recognition systems could be used to obtain transcripts directly from the audio. These approaches are generally adapted from the speech recognition ones. Speech transcription is a decades-old domain that has lately seen significant advancements due to developments in machine learning techniques. When applied to the singing voice, however, these algorithms provide poor results. For a number of reasons, the process of lyrics transcription remains difficult. In this thesis, we investigate several scientifically and industrially difficult ’Music Information Retrieval’ problems by utilizing lyrics information generated straight from audio. The emphasis is on making approaches as relevant in real-world settings as possible. This entails testing them on vast and diverse datasets and investigating their scalability. To do so, a huge publicly available annotated lyrics dataset is used, and several state-of-the-art lyrics recognition algorithms are successfully adapted. We notably present, for the first time, a system that detects explicit content directly from audio. The first research on the creation of a multilingual lyrics-toaudio system are as well described. The lyrics-toaudio alignment task is further studied in two experiments quantifying the perception of audio and lyrics synchronization. A novel phonotactic method for language identification is also presented. Finally, we provide the first cover song detection algorithm that makes explicit use of lyrics information extracted from audio

Abstract:
This thesis explores the classification of emotions in song lyrics, using automatic approaches applied to a novel corpus of 100 popular songs. I use crowd sourcing via Amazon Mechanical Turk to collect line-level emotions annotations for this collection of song lyrics.  I then build classifiers that rely on textual features to automatically identify the presence of one or more of the following six Ekman emotions: anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness and surprise. I compare different classification systems and evaluate the performance of the automatic systems against the manual annotations. I also introduce a system that uses data collected from the social network Twitter. I use the Twitter API to collect a large corpus of tweets manually labeled by their authors for one of the six emotions of interest. I then compare the classification of emotions obtained when training on data automatically collected from Twitter versus data obtained through crowd sourced annotations.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the relationship between Creative Trigger, Creative Intent, and Creative Choice in the context of intuitive songwriting practice. By positioning creative practice in a theoretical framework that includes both traditional musical transcription and autoethnographic data, the paper discusses the interplay between these creative elements and their relationship to the finished works. It also seeks to compare conscious and intuitive songwriting process in an attempt to better understand how these two modes of operation intersect in the context of the author’s own creative practice. As a result, over the course of this project, this research highlights a transition away from what can be considered an overly romantic and anachronistic view of songwriting and creativity, towards a conclusion that refutes much of the mystery surrounding songwriting practice as propagated by many successful recording artists, songwriters, media, and the music industry at large.

Rierola, Puigderajols Ana Maria. "Linguistic Study of the Magic in Disney Lyrics." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/1658.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1994, and for the first time in Spain, the Disney dealer Buenavista Pictures has been providing the videotapes Welcome to Disney Classics. They contain the original versions with subtitles in English. This paper focuses on forty-seven songs from sixteen Disney animated films and analyses them from the perspective of English discourse. The choice of songs under analysis was unsystematic. When the project of this study was begun, there were sixteen issues available. This researcher considers that the material - both in quantity and quality - is highly significant and represents the development of Disney lyrics from their beginnings to this day.
The words of these songs are, according to this researcher, a unique source of magic inspiration. They bring hope, fantasy and patterns of behaviour to children and teenagers, as well as humour and entertainment to adults. This collection of the most famous songs conveys an image of the man - Walt Disney, whom many consider as el "Mago de las cintas de los dibujos animados" (Universitas 1949: 395-405) or el "Mago de Burbank" (Fonte & Mataix, 2000) - and whose films have had an incalculable influence on our generations (1937-1996), merchandising and culture. Disney Lyrics are "magic words" that continue to attract, astonish or enchant the audience.

Woollam, Angela M. "The rhetorical art of some Vernon refrain lyrics." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6051.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation considers how the anonymous authors of six moral and religious pseudo-ballade refrain poems first attested in the late fourteenth-century Vernon manuscript (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS. Eng. poet.a.1) manipulate devices such as speaking persona, word-play, and allegory in ways that support rhetorical strategies hitherto unrecognized in Middle English lyric. The study begins with stemmatic analyses that identify, as far as is possible from the physical record, the archetypal text, or "work," of each poem. Chapter One then provides an overview of scholarship that has focussed on two important technical devices used in the Vernon refrain lyrics-the speaking voice and the refrain---and articulates how the lyrics use those devices in hitherto unrecognized ways. Chapter One concludes by considering the kinds of word-play found in other Middle English literature, in order to define that found in the Vernon lyrics. In the next six chapters, each of the six "works" is considered as a communicative event. Using mainly historicist, formalist, and reader-response methodologies, I explore, for each poem in turn, how the poet moulds language to signify indirectly so that the message is communicated figuratively, and how the implied audience is cast into a specific role vis-a-vis the communicative action in a way that inflects the message. I also explore how the rhetorical strategies of the poems are informed by various theories of signification, which are defined in relation to the socio-linguistic circumstances and philosophical currents of the time, and consider the poems in relation to other medieval, mostly earlier Middle English, lyrics. In the Conclusion, findings are assembled to indicate how the recovery of the Vernon refrain lyrics' rhetorical art expands the parameters that currently define Middle English lyric. I also turn from considering the implied audience of the "works" to considering the historical audience of the Vernon manuscript, and suggest that the recovery of the Vernon refrain lyrics' rhetorical art bolsters theories that maintain the Vernon manuscript was intended, at least in part, for an upper gentry or aristocratic audience, and that its thorough Englishness is more of a polemic assertion of the strength of the English language than a reflection of socio-linguistic conditions.

Abstract:
Courtly love lyrics, like other courtly genres, are dominated by male-voiced texts that privilege male perspectives. In conventional courtly love lyrics, women are silenced and objectified by the male speaker. Still, a handful of women-voiced lyrics--"women's songs"--exist in the courtly love lyrical tradition. This thesis studies women's songs in Middle English and their role in the androcentric courtly love tradition.
In the first chapter, I discuss critical perspectives on conventional courtly representations of women. In the second chapter, I locate Middle English women's songs in literary contexts other than courtly love: the Middle English lyrical tradition, the cross-cultural phenomenon of medieval women's songs, and the manuscript contexts of Middle English women's songs. In Chapter Three, I discuss the individual songs themselves and examine the range of perspectives found in woman-voiced lyrics.
My discussion of Middle English women's songs includes texts not previously admitted to the genre. This expanded collection of women's songs creates an alternative courtly discourse privileging female perspectives. Middle English women's songs create a space for women's voices in courtly love.

Abstract:
This study was carried out in order to investigate the purpose of Bob Dylan’s creative metaphors. Focus was on whether they were used for artistic effect or to simplify and concretize abstract concepts. Ten songs written in the last five decades were randomly selected and searched for occurrences of creative metaphors. The metaphors found were chronologically listed and discussed in terms of potential source and target domains in order to determine their purpose. The results showed rather clearly that Dylan’s creative metaphors, regardless of whether the domains were abstract or concrete, seemed to complicate rather than simplify the interpretation of a line. There were a few instances where the creative metaphors could be interpreted as being explanatory; however, this was regarded as a secondary effect since it was clear that the primary purpose for Dylan’s creative metaphors was to add an artistic touch. Moreover, this purpose did not seem to have changed in any way during the last five decades.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to investigate song lyrics within rap and pop music from a cultural and a gender perspective, focusing on the depiction of women. The investigation focuses on the nouns the songwriter use to refer to the concept of woman. Twenty songs from each genre are conveyed in this study. The results show that rap lyrics contain multiple nouns referring to the concept of woman that depict women in a negative way. Pop lyrics do not contain these words and thus have a more positive way of depicting women. Nouns that occur in both genres tend to be of positive value whereas nouns that are only represented in the rap genre tend to be of negative value, something that indicates these nouns to be bearers of cultural values. It is easier to distinguish hip-hop culture, of which rap is a part, due to the fact that it consists of distinctive language that is highly connected to that particular genre. Pop music however, is very broad and also more difficult to distinguish as a unique culture compared to hip-hop. The language used in pop lyrics is rather commonplace and does not stand out in the crowd as the language in rap lyrics does.

Abstract:
This thesis represents an analysis of symbolic expressions used to convey traditional Chinese cultural values in marital relations as expressed through costumes and lyrics in Peking Opera plays and performances. Two symbols, dragon and phoenix, were selected from the costume collection. Four symbols--bird, tiger, wild goose, and dragon--were selected from compilations of lyrics. These symbols were selected because they expressed Chinese core cultural values, an imperial ideology based on Confucian thoughts, which were practiced rigidly during Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Modeling Theory is applied to argue that dragon and phoenix as visual symbols convey ideas about characters' background, marital relationship, social status shifts, and socio-culturally desirable values. Social Drama Theory is employed to analyze the lyrics to understand how ideal images of husband and wife are constructed. The archetypes of Chinese traditional culture that have influenced Chinese thought and action for centuries are discovered and discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis is composed of two parts: Hoard, a collection of poems, and Dark Lyrics: Studying the Subterranean Impulses of Contemporary Poetry, an inquiry into the metaphor of darkness in late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century Anglophone poetry. Hoard includes four series of poems – ‘Red Boat’, ‘Hoxne’, ‘Quatrefoils’ and ‘White Swan’ – which use the Hoxne hoard as a metaphor for lost love. The second series is titled ‘Foundlings’, and is based on archival tokens from children who were abandoned to London’s Foundling Hospital in the mid-eighteenth century. The third series includes ‘Elegy’ and ‘Decorations’, and uses descriptions of the Staffordshire hoard along with eyewitness accounts of global conflict in the late-twentieth century to the present day. Dark Lyrics: Studying the Subterranean Impulses of Contemporary Poetry examines the theme of loss presented in the poems Hoard, progressing from orphans to silenced women to bereavement to war to ecological disaster. The book is a series of mediations of a central topic and includes close readings that show how an individual contemporary writer uses the topic within his or her work. Meditation One posits that forms of loss appear in poetry as metaphors of darkness, and proceeds historically through the work of Dante, Shakespeare and Elizabeth Bishop and Charles Wright; the chapter ends with a close reading of John Burnside’s prose poem ‘Annunciations’ (Common Knowledge). Meditation Two looks at the mythological uses of the concept of darkness, especially as it represents ego loss, and discusses Joan Retallack’s ‘Afterrimages’; the chapter closes with a discussion of Rusty Morrison’s Whethering and when the true keeps calm biding its story. Meditation Three looks at the emotions of lost love, both familial and romantic, and includes a discussion of Martha Nussbaum’s theory of emotions and ethics. The chapter includes close readings of Elizabeth Robinson’s The orphan and its relations and Susan Howe’s That This. Meditation Four discusses the pain caused by war and the form of my long poem ‘Decorations’; it includes an examination of Seamus Heaney’s North. The chapter concludes with an essay on Maxine Chernoff’s book Without. Meditation Five discusses objects and how they become a part of the body and therefore become a potential locus for both pain and loss; the chapter closes with a close reading of Brenda Coultas’ The Handmade Museum. The themes and ideas are reiterated in the Conclusion.

This paper is a study of Carmen McRae’s unique style of delivering lyrics by analyzing her use of phrasing, stylistic elements, and personal connection, in an effort to apply these techniques to a modern-day vocal performance. The paper provides vocalists with a guideline in order to understand, emulate, and implement Carmen McRae’s techniques. Analyzing McRae’s interpretation of a song is important in today’s musical climate because the modern jazz singer has limited resources pertaining to how to perform a song with lyric interpretation as the primary focus.

Abstract:
The People’s Poets of Texas: Literature Born Within the Singer/Songwriter Tradition of the Last Forty Years is a creative nonfiction exploration of the poetry found within the songs of multiple generations of modern Texas singer/songwriters and a case for the consideration of their work as a genuine regional literature. Studying the roots of Texas music, the musicality of Texan manners of speech and storytelling, and re-examining the Austin, Texas music scene of the 1970s that brought a national focus to the organic, reciprocal manner in which Texas music is traditionally experienced, radically altered the ways in which the songs were written, recorded, and marketed. An examination of this phenomenon allows us to understand that, first, a proliferation of Texas singer/songwriters of unprecedented quality has emerged in recent decades and that, second, a legitimate people's literature is emerging from their song-craft.

Abstract:
The general field of interest for this study is the Swedish public’s level of awareness of non-literal and figurative language, such as idioms and metaphors, in English. The English language can be considered to be evolving into Sweden’s second language, since it is present in so much more than school, for example, on television, computers and radio. This study aims to gain an insight into the degree of understanding of common idiomatic expressions in popular English song lyrics by native Swedish speakers. University students were chosen as the sample group and twelve of them were asked to explain their understanding of selected English idioms which occur in songs with which they were likely to recognize. The results have then been analyzed and it was possible to establish the degrees of understanding, misunderstanding and failure to understand. Firstly, the participants have explained the expression out of context, and secondly they were asked to explain it in the context of the song. This was to see whether the expressions appear to have been easier to understand out of context or in context. Earlier research show difficulties in defining the term idiom, and in this survey the term idiomatic expression has been used and defined as a way of speaking or writing that does not make any literal sense, even though the expressions are used all the time and people familiar with the language generally recognize them and understand their meaning. Earlier research has facilitated the analysis by the use of terms, theories and definitions on various ways of understanding metaphors, metonymy and idioms, and how these might, or might not, differ between Swedish and English. The results of this survey show that most of the expressions appear to have been easier to explain and understand when seen and heard in the context of the song. Although, some expressions appear to have been very alien to the participants, which has resulted in misunderstandings and failure to understand both in and out of context of the song lyrics in question.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to identify didactic strategies for the use of lyrics in children's religious education. This is done to enhance and facilitate children's spiritual growth by means of singing lyrics. The study pays particular attention to the recognition of the role of lyrics in Christian religious education as a maturing agent. Lyrics help to provide children with the opportunity to communicate with God by revealing God's characteristics through theoretical and doctrinal content in an artistic form. Lyrics enrich children's religious development by helping them to express their joy and praise of God. Lyrics can also help children to experience a special quality of fellowship when they sing together. Lyrics ease the stiffness which can occur during the process of education. The survey of lyrics in Christian history also reveals that lyrics played an essential role in the lives of Christians throughout history. Lyrics have been used for worship, education, evangelisation and fellowship. Lyrics have functioned as a medium in which people have conversations with God and worship Him. They have also been a delightful source through which people learn about God through joyful experiences. Lyrics have helped Christians to establish true fellowship in their faith by singing together. The study reveals, however, that lyrics today do not seem to be effective in supporting people, including children, in their encounters with God. As much as lyrics can help children, they can also be obstacles to children's spiritual growth because of their inappropriate contents or improper ways of presentation. Children might misunderstand religious concepts by acquiring "unfamiliar" doctrine from lyrics. It seems that children can also develop inappropriate ideas and attitudes about worshipping under the influence of self-oriented or fun-seeking styles of lyrics. This potential of lyrics to influence children either positively or negatively is often overlooked. The question that may be raised is: what should be done to facilitate the lyric's maturing role and to keep it from being a hindrance in children's religious education? This study attempts to identify systematic and scientific didactic approaches of teaching lyrics as a way of heightening the positive role of lyrics in children's spiritual growth. For the identification of didactic strategies which are best suited for children's spiritual growth, the study presents approaches in which systems of coherent ideas, findings, activities and views concerning instruction and learning are performed. The didactic strategies are illustrated in three main phases, i.e. introductory, executive and assessment phases. Essential characteristics of the instruction-learning phenomenon in all its facets are absorbed into the theory as an overall guide for every teaching situation. The study makes an effort to apply these didactic strategies to the practical situation of teaching lyrics. Korean children are chosen as the subjects for the teaching oflyrics and their religious development is empirically investigated as the basic research on the understanding of the learner in the didactic situation. The application of the general approaches to the definite and specific situation of teaching Korean children is explained. Didactic approaches are redesigned, taking the specific didactic situation of Korea, including Korean children's specific religious characteristics, into consideration. These programmes can be effectively applied to other didactic situations, keeping them flexible in the light of the uniqueness of each lesson. The ultimate aim of this study - the recognition of systematically organised didactic strategies and exemplification of their practical application to the detailed situation of teaching lyrics - is to maximise the effectiveness of lyrics for children's spiritual goodness, particularly in enriching children's religious knowledge and experience.

Abstract:
In a world where online information is growing rapidly, the need for more efficient methods to search for and create music collections is larger than ever. Looking at the most recent trends, the application of machine learning to automate different categorization problems such as genre and mood classification has shown promising results. In this thesis we investigate the problem of classifying explicit music content using machine learning. Different data sets containing lyrics and music metadata, vectorization methods and algorithms including Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, k-Nearest Neighbor and Multinomial Naive Bayes are combined to create 32 different configurations. The configurations are then evaluated using precision-recall curves. The investigation shows that the configuration with the lyric data set together with TF-IDF vectorization and Random Forest as algorithm outperforms all other configurations.

Abstract:
More celebrities have been opening up about the mental illness (MI) journey, despite its stigmatized status in society. This shift has become popular with some rap artists, including Kanye West, Logic, and NF. However, little research exists on mental health rhetoric in the rap industry. In this project, I contributed to filling this gap by looking at the lyrics of American rapper, NF. Because his music is rising popularity and heavily focused on MI experience, NF was a worthy rhetor to study. I used Fantasy Theme Analysis to discover the fantasy themes present in NF’s album The Search. These fantasy themes present bind together to create a rhetorical vision of how NF experiences an internal war because of his MI. NF’s experiences may be shared by his listeners that also deal with the complexities of MI and its associated stigma. By talking about his MI experiences openly and honestly, NF and other celebrities can use their public platform to increase feelings of belongingness and reduce feelings of self-stigma.

This thesis aims at collecting lyrics sentiment labels for creating a classification model to detect the emotion of songs. To collect the labels of the lyrics, we propose two human computation games. In the first game, the emotion labels are collected when players answer some annotation questions about Chinese lyric. In the second game, multiple labels of a song are collected for verification purpose. The games are implemented with Facebook API. The second goal of this thesis is to construct a model for lyric sentiment detection. We propose several syntactic and semantic features and exploit the semi-supervised learning approaches to learn the classification model. Furthermore, some heuristics are proposed to extract information about the tempo of songs from text to compensate for the insufficient melodic information in lyrics.

The purpose of this proposal is to design a mobile learning environment based on English lyrics. When a digital audio file (MP3) plays with music player, learners can listen or read the synchronous lyrics. Moreover, to deepen learners’ cognition in English, we provide the linguistic terms from lyrics which are processed via web-service. Additionally, the linguistic terms will be translated by Google Translate. As a result, the system can help English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners to learn linguistic terms within lyrics when enjoying music. The system we perform is building on Windows Mobile 6.0 and above. We get three features (mutual information, unsubstitutability and frequency) from corpus that is based on Wikipedia articles. This research focuses on retrieving meaningful linguistic terms and highlights within the lyrics automatically. The system is able to help students to take good advantage of mobility and portability to learn English.

The thesis focuses on the object-describing lyrics written by Chou Chin-Chen and investigates the selection of ideas, analysis of images, and artistic characteristics. This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 is divided into two sections. The first section introduces the research motivation, the research methods, and literature review. The second section studies the origin of object-describing lyrics to describe the relationship of objects and literature and to define the concept of object-describing lyrics. Chapter 2 indicates the formation background of Chou Chin-Chen’s lyrics. The first section discusses the historical origin and litery development of object-describing lyrics in terms of different dynasties: Early Chin dynasty, The Han dynasty, and Wei-Jin Dynasty. In addition, the section further investigates the civil object-describing lyrics in Dunhuang and intellectuals’ object-describing lyrics in early North Song Dynasty. The second section discusses the factors of writing with the respect of the social and cultural background and makes the list of Chou Chin-Chen’s lyrics in order to compare the background influences and literature characteristics. Chapter 3 analyzes the content of Chou Chin-Chen’s lyrics based on the definition made in the previous sections. The chapter discusses 32 lyrics to analyze the selection of ideas with six categories: season, plants, nature, appearance and time. There are two seasonal lyrics (lantern and Chongjiu festivals), ten plant lyrics (plum flowers, willows, pear, lotus, sweet-scented osmanthus, and apricot), seven nature lyrics (snow, moon, and spring rain). The discussion focuses on the image analysis including prototypes and trends and further investigates the historical backgrounds, content structures, writing skills and historical evaluations. Chapter 4 studies and compares Chou Chin-Chen’s object-describing lyrics in terms of the artistic characteristics, rhetoric skills, language styles, and content structures. Chapter 5 describes the comments and influences of Chou Chin-Chen’s object-describing lyrics. Chapter 6 concludes the achievement of Chou Chin-Chen’s object-describing lyrics.
