de Lyon, Agobardo. Sobre el granizo y los truenos. Teseo, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.55778/ts878836843.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Corporate social responsibility is a subject of growing importance in business and law. Today, no analysis of corporate governance systems would be complete without considering the pressures on companies to be seen as responsible corporate citizens. This chapter provides a descriptive overview of developments in the field, including increasing voluntary and required environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure; and proliferating voluntary and multilateral standards for responsible corporate behavior. It reviews some of the more significant empirical evidence on the financial results of companies’ implementation of corporate responsibility initiatives, including the effects of such initiatives on innovation, trust, and social welfare. It concludes with an analysis relating these developments to arguments about the objectives of the corporation and the shareholder/stakeholder debate—with particular reference to the argument between Cornell Distinguished Professor of Corporate and Business Law, Lynn A. Stout, and Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court, Leo E. Strine, Jr.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
War proved a seminal influence on the shape of the 20th century. This collection provides various essays addressing the phenomenon of war as viewed through the eyes of the fin de siecle. Leading scholars of war, international relations, and international law offer general or specific insights into war's consequences during the last one hundred years. Combined, the essays demonstrate the centrality of 20th century war to the development of the modern state system, international jurisprudence, and contemporary society. Donald Watt provides an overview of the use of the term war in its legal and practical sense. John Lynn addresses the transformation of military professional forces through the century. Donna Arzt explores the slow convergence of humanitarian law with human rights laws as witnessed in the latter half of the century. The contours of the national security state that emerged in many forms through the late century are detailed in contributions by Lawrence Aronsen, Geoffrey Smith, and Gary Hess. Finally, efforts to avert war through arms control, disarmament, arms reduction, and peace-keeping are examined in essays by Norman Hillmer and Erik Goldstein.

Cohick, Lynn H. The Letter to the Ephesians. Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/bci-000n.

Full text
Abstract:
The letter to the Ephesians provokes an array of interpretive questions regarding authorship, audience, date, occasion, purpose of writing, and the nature of its moral instruction—including its words addressed to slaves and masters. Interacting critically in an arena of intense debate, Lynn Cohick provides an exegetically astute analysis of the six chapters of Ephesians, offering an insightful account of the letter’s theology and soteriology as she attends to its expansive prose and lofty vision of God’s redemption. Cohick analyzes everything from the letter’s description of the church and its appeals for discipleship to the complex relationship between Jews and gentiles within the text and in the broader cultural context. Her extensive knowledge of the social realities of women and families in the ancient world is also evident throughout. Historically sensitive and theologically rich, Cohick’s commentary will be an abundant resource for a new generation of scholars, pastors, and lay leaders.

Koudé, Roger K., ed. La fondamentalité des droits de l’homme. Editions des archives contemporaines, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.17184/eac.9782813003331.

Full text
Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The Romandie lay at the intersection of international trade routes from Italy over the alpine passes (controlled by Savoy) and north-westwards over the Jura mountains into the Franche-Comté and onwards to France and the Low Countries, though the pre-eminence of the Genevan fairs was challenged by Lyon. Western Switzerland was heavily reliant upon grain from Alsace and above all salt from the brine pits of the Franche-Comté (essential in cattle-rearing, dairying and cheese-making). The Vaud, on the northern littoral of Lake Geneva was agriculturally fertile (especially viticulture, while Lakes Geneva and Neuchâtel were important sources of fish. Yet the Vaud had few urban centres of importance, barring Lausanne and Geneva, while many new town foundations of 13th/14th century subsequently disappeared.

Abstract:
This chapter details events in the life Edna Phillips during World War II. In the summer of 1942, Sam Rosenbaum entered the army as a major. Not long before Sam left, Phillips received a call from maestro Eugene Ormandy. Lynne Wainwright, her replacement as first harpist in the orchestra, had suddenly resigned her position, leaving Ormandy with little time to find a replacement. Would Phillips consider coming back to the orchestra? Surprised by the call, she hesitated. Sam, however, knew that a lonely life lay ahead for Edna with him overseas and urged her to accept Ormandy's offer. However, there was one problem Sam had not foreseen, and that was Eugene Ormandy. Very soon after Sam left, the maestro began, in Phillips's words, “to lay siege” to her, sending passionate looks in her direction during rehearsals, offering her special favors, and generally embarrassing her with his ill-disguised ardor. It was obvious to the whole orchestra what he was up to.

Roule, Natasha, ed. La chute de Phaéton, comédie en musique (1694). A-R Editions, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.31022/b233.

Full text
Abstract:
Marc-Antoine Legrand's La chute de Phaéton, comédie en musique (1694) is the only surviving opera parody from France that was written outside of Paris in the seventeenth century. Part spoken theater and part musical drama, Legrand's work sets excerpts of Jean-Baptiste Lully's Phaéton to a narrative about a troupe of musicians in the city of Lyon who try to rescue their failing opera company from financial collapse. Based on actual events, La chute de Phaéton cleverly transforms Lully's moral lessons on the disastrous consequences of hubris into a scathing commentary on the opera industry—and on the genre of opera itself. The musical portion amounts to approximately thirty minutes of performance time and includes dances, choruses, récitatifs, and airs, making it an ideal tool for introducing students to French baroque music as well as for offering an opportunity of creative exploration for those more experienced with the repertoire.

Stamey, Emily. Gilded: Contemporary Artists Explore Value and Worth. Weatherspoon Art Museum, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5149/9781890949198_stamey.

Full text
Abstract:
This exhibition catalogue accompanies Gilded: Contemporary Artists Explore Value and Worth, organized by the Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNC Greensboro, on view September 10, 2022 - April 8, 2023. Across time and cultures, gold has served as a metaphor for what we value most. Symbolically, it stands in for goodness, excellence, brilliance, and wealth. He has a heart of gold. She is going for gold. It shone like gold. They struck gold. Found in crowns and regalia that bestow power, rings that signal matrimony, and currency traded among peoples, the metal has profound social significance. Across the arts, craftspeople have long pounded gold into thin sheets called leaves, which are applied in a process called gilding. In realms of the spiritual, gilding illuminates sacred texts, gives otherworldly luster to holy spaces, and allows religious sculptures to shine. While we most often associate gold leaf with historic traditions, the material appears frequently in the work of contemporary artists. Specifically, the artists represented in this exhibition turn to gilding as a means to reconsider our value systems. Gilding images of graffiti and sidewalks, cardboard boxes and architectural fragments, they ask us to see the beauty in what we so often overlook and honor that which we so often throw away. Gilding images of people—often those who have been disempowered or forgotten—they ask us to hold up our collective humanity. If, as the saying goes, “all that glitters is not gold,” the artists represented here offer an inverse proposition: perhaps that which does not always shine is most worthy of our attention. Gilded features the work of Radcliffe Bailey, Larissa Bates, william cordova, Angela Fraleigh, Gajin Fujita, Nicholas Galanin, Liz Glynn, Shan Goshorn, Sherin Guirguis, Titus Kaphar, Hung Liu, James Nares, Ronny Quevedo, Shinji Turner-Yamamoto, Danh Vo, Stacy Lynn Waddell, and Summer Wheat. After its Weatherspoon debut, the project will travel to the Hunter Museum of Art in Chattanooga, TN and the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth in Hanover, NH.

Ford, Lyn, and Sherry Norfolk, eds. Supporting Diversity and Inclusion with Story. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216021490.

Full text
Abstract:
Today’s increasingly interconnected and globalized world demands that students be taught to appreciate human diversity and recognize universally held values and beliefs. Authentic, culturally based folktales can lay the foundation for this cultural understanding. Professional storytellers like editors Sherry Norfolk and Lyn Ford are deeply committed to bringing people together through story. In this book, they have identified a group of culturally diverse storytellers whose carefully researched tales authentically reflect the cultures from which they come. The book includes well-crafted, culturally authentic folktales contributed by storytellers of varying cultures and ethnicities. Commentaries from the contributors follow each tale, reflecting on the story and its significance to the culture it represents. Sets of questions for teachers and librarians also accompany each story to facilitate discussion. Teachers, librarians, and information specialists find that stories engage students’ attention and empathy. The commentaries provide insights into the significance of cultural norms, customs, and beliefs represented in the story, and the discussion questions and guides help them drill down with students to achieve deeper understanding. Resource lists of additional relevant materials at the end of each section promote continued learning.
