Abstract:
This chapter considers some issues about our individual duties of sincerity and promissory fidelity, with particular emphasis on the role the stricture on lying plays in maintaining reliable channels of communication between moral agents. It defends a qualified absolutism about lying that distinguishes the wrong of the lie from the wrong involved in deception (when it is wrong). In particular, it examines Immanuel Kant's absolutism about lying, building upon the themes Kant adduces in the opening passage of the selection from the Lectures on Ethics. It also explores the problem of the Murderer at the Door and connects it to other issues about our moral relations with wrongdoers and the process of their moral evolution. Finally, it looks at the active, affimative misrepresentation that one is telling the truth rather than operating in a suspended context and relates it to the basic conditions of interpersonal moral agency.

Abstract:
Why is it wrong to lie? This chapter offers a clarification of what such questions presuppose. It then canvasses some natural potential answers drawn from leading moral theories. These often seek to ground the wrongness of lying in the wrongness of (intentional) deception, given that when we lie we are typically aiming to induce a false belief in our interlocutor (i.e., to deceive him). The present chapter offers a different diagnosis of the wrongness of lying. The account highlights the structural parallels between telling someone something and promising someone something: both are voluntary acts in which the speaker takes on responsibilities vis-à-vis her addressee which she did not have before. The proposal is that lies, like insincere promises, are wrong in virtue of being faithless pledges. The chapter thus resurrects in a somewhat different form W. D. Ross’s suggestion that lying violates the pro tanto duty of fidelity.

Abstract:
This chapter, which covers the principle of veracity (truth telling), addresses the topic of honesty as an element of the general moral concept of respect for persons. The tension between honest disclosure as a moral principle and the potential for lying to produce benefits is explored. In doing so, the moral justification for lying to benefit the patient or others is explained. Further, the ethical implications of withholding information about care or treatment are discussed. Cases in this chapter focus on the challenges faced by pharmacists when honesty considerations arise in practice: what patients should be told when the pharmacist is not yet sure what the facts are, lying to patients in order to benefit them, lying to patients to benefit others, and disclosure to patients who ask to see their medical records.

Abstract:
Chapter 6 explores the issues of eyewitness accounts and testimony. In both legal disputes and for information about foreign countries great reliance was placed on the accounts of eyewitnesses. But how could anyone be sure that those who provided testimony were telling the truth? Reliable, honest testimony was central to questions of truth and lying and so features heavily in discussion in this period. The chapter explores a variety of cases such as the accounts given of the death of Robert Greene; the murder of Anthony James by Annis and George Dell; the case of the mysterious herring with lettering on its side, and the plots against Mary Queen of Scots, as well as the fictional account of issues about travel in Thomas Nashe’s The Unfortunate Traveller, to show how debates about truth and lies were undertaken.
