Full textThis thesis examines the influence of "war against terrorism" on the speeches of French press on terrorism taking place in the context of Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Chechen conflict. His goal is to highlight the symbolic standards structuring these speeches, and their developments. The first part of the thesis focuses first on terrorism and on the link between terrorism and media. In a second time this part studies the consequences of the September 11 attacks on the definition of terrorism but also on how to fight against this form of violence. The second part speaks about the importance of the discussion on religious matters in the context of "war against terrorism. " It focuses first controversy developed on Islam, its nature and its relationship to violence and terrorism. She then questioned the place of religion in both conflicts studied. The third part proposes the study of a body press on attacks during the two conflicts. The study is being conducted through an analysis of discourse based on the theory of AJ. Greimas. This body is composed of 45 newspaper articles, statements in Le Monde, Le Figaro and Liberation, involving attacks between 2000 and 2004

Full textMore than the expression of a style in the art of political cartoons during the twentieth century, David Low, British cartoonist, New-Zealander by birth, set up himself as a conscience against the rise of the risks of totalitarianism in Europe and in the rest of the world. His role as committed artist is inscribed on the political history of contemporary Great-Britain. The study of this research is organized into two main thrusts. On the one hand, beyond the reading and the interpretation both of the image and the representation in Low’s cartoons, it analyses the relationship between the artist and the political power, from the 1930’s and the emergence of National Socialism in Germany, to the final victory of the Allies against the Third Reich, in May, 1945. On the other hand, it studies the role of the cartoonist as an artistic “freedom fighter”, both in his own country, against the effects of the “appeasement” policies, and on the international scene in his fight against the Axes. How did this kind of objection start? What were its main characteristics? How was his opposition organized? What was its evolution during the decade of “cold peace” and during the war? Thus, the aim will be to precise the nature and the importance of the environment in which the artist worked during more than fifteen years, and to estimate the reality of the constraints he had to face, in his fight against Hitler and National Socialism
Canneval, Jacques. "Le traitement, dans la presse écrite, de la violence politique en Guadeloupe de 1979 à 1989." Thesis, Paris 3, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA030091.
Full textBetween 1979 and 1989, the region covering the French West Indies and Guyana, and in particular Guadeloupe, experienced a decade of violence. 284 bomb attacks were committed in these countries, i.e. slightly more than 10% of the 2,616 attacks carried out throughout French territory between 1973 and 1980. Two “terrorist” organizations successively claimed responsibility for these acts of violence: the Liberation Army Group (G.L.A.) and the Caribbean Revolutionary Alliance. The aim of this “armed struggle” was to “incite” the French government to grant national independence to its last strongholds in the West Indies and South America. This dissertation, entitled “How the written press dealt with the political violence in Guadeloupe between 1979 and 1989”, focuses on questioning the discursive strategy implemented by national and regional newspapers for reporting the violence in a country where a political theory on assimilation was brought into play. In its first part, this work, which is based on the actantial model, concentrates on highlighting the major phases in the “departmentalization” formula, which imposed itself over time as the political framework that would be used to regulate public life in overseas departments. In its second part, it emphasizes in detail the long historic process which led to the aforementioned violent events. These are analyzed in the third part through a contrastive study of the reference daily – Le Monde, with the nationalistic newspaper – the Journal Guadeloupéen and by analyzing the content. The results of this work are twofold: 1) the phenomenon of political violence is addressed in its theoretical and practical functioning; following an in-depth enquiry, the basic truths are brought to the fore for this troubled period. 2) the contrastive relationship, the lexical and thematic analysis uncovers the “substance” used by the newspapers for establishing their claims

Full textConsidered as a neans of information on trade union matters for african workers, the writen press of the colonial era exercise some influence in the pewer struggle through its laudatory comments or critics or moreso through the fate it reserves workers. This study deals with the socio-professional groups comprising salaried workers in the public, mixed and private sectors. It is supported by newpapers bearing general information and by union bulletins printed in the ivory coast between 1944 and 1958. The approach is a reflection on press contribution within the framework of trade union claims and its method is a precise one : inventory of existing newspapers ; inventory of articles dealing with trade union problems published in these papers and which constitutes the corpus ; analysis of the thematic content of press coverage of these problems. It can also be considered as a contribution to studies of different themes concerning the press in the ivory coast

Full textHabitat 67 is a residential complex of 158 modular apartments, designed by Moshe Safdie, and built in Montreal for the 1967 World Exhibition. Preliminary explorations of its unprecedentedly abundant, widespread and long-lasting coverage in the architectural press had revealed enigmatic synchronicity with the rise and fall of megastructure, ending in death and mourning of the whole Modern Movement. Taking advantage of theories of reception, this study is a methodical and exhaustive survey of the specialised mediatisation of Habitat 67, in itself and in its own context, aiming to establish the autonomy and critical historiographic impact of the phenomenon. After a methodological introduction, the report opens with a prologue unveiling early, academic related, self-training of Safdie as an analyst of editorial policies and their relationship to modern architecture. This portrait of a student pioneering in reception studies by militant commitment is giving brand new and much deeper understanding of the still historiographically vivid «student project that got built» diagnosis emitted in 1967 by critic Reyner Banham. The essay is then structured along the chronological succession of architectural projects and objects to which the media coverage is supposed to refer to, starting with thesis project of 1961. Safdie’s formerly published analysis of editorial policies appears to be fully integrated in the original design as well as in its mediatisation strategy, resulting in lasting and international diffusion as a highly relevant avant-garde feature, providing a progressive dimension to the capitalistic media-favourite «New Montreal Skyline», until 1963.
