Abstract:
The harp lute is a generic term given to certain types of plucked stringed instruments originally invented by an English musician-retailer, Edward Light, in London at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Combining elements of the highly popular contemporary instruments the harp and the guittar (English guitar), the ideal hybrid instrument, the ‘harp lute’ was constructed. Although the name ‘lute’ was given, since the body consisted of three or seven staves and integrated open major tuning with a natural scale for floating strings it is more closely related to the harp and the guittar than the conventional lute. Incessant application of inventors’ changes to the instruments generated appearances in a variety of forms, sizes, designations and number of strings. Being moderately priced but excessively decorated and relatively easy to learn, harp lutes, as liberal arts instruments, quickly became fashionable in the London music scene, especially amongst middle class ladies. Despite being highly decorative instruments, harp lutes were normally very economic to make. Their construction was adapted for the growth of mass-produced musical instruments, and was therefore moderately and affordably priced. Aalthough there is a great number of surviving harp lutes in public museums, academic institutions, private collections, and a large quantity of published music, as well as archival sources related to the instruments kept in public libraries within researchable conditions, there has been hardly any serious academic study of these instruments since a 1908 survey by Robert Bruce Armstrong. Thereafter, problematically, many accounts relating to harp lutes have relied on erroneous aspects of his research (the date of invention 1798, for instance, may be wrong). This lack of substantial information induced further issues so that, due to the complexity of the instrument designs and the existence of the similar kinds, ambiguous designations have been applied to each model of harp lute, bringing with it added confusion in determining terminology. This thesis, therefore, aims to clarify the terminology and to provide a complete account of the harp lutes, particularly those by Edward Light, in the British Isles during the first half of the nineteenth century. To enable classification of these instruments, it became important to research all available information on Edward Light as musical instrument retailer, musician and inventor. Thus, all models of the harp lutes will be revealed chronologically, shedding light on their constructional transformation as opposed to musical aspects – if readers need more information on musical aspects, they should refer to Armstrong (1908); the purpose of this thesis is to clarify the evolutionary process of the harp lute with partial reference to the social and cultural changes in Britain. There will less focus on music. The inventor Edward Light’s outstanding commercial acumen in musical instrument retailing and inventing will be highlighted, while in order to understand his attempts at harp lute manufacturing (in cooperation with the makers, e.g. Barry), which substantially underpinned Light’s significant success, a copy of a harp-lute will be made to shed light on the hidden secrets in harp lute making.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the trajectory of non-European musical instruments acquired for Paris museums during the colonial period. It considers the effects of the patrimonialisation of these objects of use, which come from a variety of origins and acquisition contexts, on their material conservation from their acquisition at the end of the nineteenth century to the present day. Putting cultural artefacts into collections leads to the introduction of new procedures, sometimes far from those used for their previous purposes. These practices reflect the new functions assigned to the object, whose material preservation has become essential. The preservation of musical instruments raises specific questions relating to the evocation, maintenance and even reactivation of their functionality. In the case of non-European collections, these complex issues are combined with the problems of conserving and displaying an object that is culturally distant to both professionals and visitors. The paths taken by these relocated instruments, which are closely linked to the development of ethnology and to French and European colonial history, raise complex issues from the point of view of both the history of collections and public policy. Based on a historical and material analysis of a corpus of lutes held at the Musée de la Musique (Cité de la Musique - Philharmonie de Paris) and the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, acquired from 1872 onwards by the Instrumental Museum of the Conservatoire National de Musique and the Musée d'Ethnographie du Trocadéro, this research explores the links between museum traces and colonial memories. As the practitioner's gesture cannot be dissociated from the context in which it takes place, this dissertation aims to reposition museum practices in their historical and institutional contexts. The physical trace thus becomes a witness to the way in which these instruments are perceived, shedding light on the museum history of collections from colonial contexts at a time when new thinking, prompted by debates on their acquisition, is aiming to take ethical responsibility for these cultural artefacts

This paper discusses the personal transformations that occurred in the lives of some of the relatives of militants involved in the conflict called Guerrilha do Araguaia, starting from the breaking of family ties and seeking the whereabouts of their missing relatives. It also discusses how they reconstruct their memories about the missing relative. Brazil was under intense military dictatorial regime, more specifically in the late 60's, when the PCdoB (Communist Party of Brazil) decided to send to the Araguaia region (between the current states of Para, Tocantins and Maranhão) some of their militants in order to implement a guerrilla inspired by the Maoist model. About 60 people were sent to the region, mainly young people who, in most cases, were at risk of death and/or might go through strong retaliation if they continued to live in the large cities due to political repression. Backed by the militant's standards of political cohesion, risk of life and professional skills, the Party went through the selection process. The next step was the process of separating the militants from their families. This separation was partially mitigated by the Party which, during some time, used to bring news from the militants through notes and letters. Then, at the moment when the Communists were discovered and attacked by the armed forces, there was a huge silence that coincided with deaths and imprisonments of the Party's heads all over the main cities of the country, leaving dozens of families without any further news about their relatives and without knowing what might have happened to them. With the advent of an Amnesty in 1979, many relatives gathered and got organized in order to seek information about the whereabouts of their relatives. This is the context within which this research works on the proposed objectives

CUENA, LOMBRANA ALBA. "Integrated in situ and ex situ approach for Gentiana lutea L. ssp. lutea conservation." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Cagliari, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11584/266729.

Full text
Abstract:
Gentiana lutea L. subsp lutea (hereafter G. lutea) is a long-lived geophyte, which has high medicinal value for the intensely bitter properties residing mainly in the root, being the main vegetable bitter employed in homeopathy and for the liqueurs production. G. lutea is presented in the Annex V of the Directive 92/43/EEC. In addition, it’s included in the List of endangered medicinal plants in the Annex D to the Council Regulation (EC) No. 338/97 of EU, whose purpose is the protection of plant species by control of their trade. Due to a lack of knowledge on the current G. lutea distributional information in Sardinia, Species Distribution Models (SDMs) could be even an important tool to limit search efforts by selecting the areas where field surveys are to be carried out for guiding discoveries of new localities and to evaluate the influence of extant and extinct localities. Once distribution knowledge was updated, further activities performed on representative localities, including ex situ and in situ studies were carried out. Firstly, our contribution to conserve this specie in Sardinia, included ex situ aspects that provided an alternative and complementary method for preventing immediate extinction and support further interventions. The experimental examination of the time when germination occurs in natural sites, the understanding of the seed behaviour in the soil and the investigation of the germination response under laboratory conditions. In particular, the isolated and on the boundary Sardinian population can differ genetically and morphologically from central populations because of their smaller population size and greater physical and ecological distances from the centre of the range, and may contain genotypes adapted to extreme environmental conditions; it is therefore important to check the effect on seed ecophysiology germination on small and spatial isolated populations. Previous studies have found that the germination of many mountain plants was promoted by cycles of cold-wet stratification that released seed dormancy in transient and permanent seed banks. In this way, dormancy played a key role in optimizing germination success by controlling the timing of germination. Thus, this research would contributed to this species conservation, suggesting the optimal protocol of germination and multiplication and, on the other hand, the information of the different kinds of seed dormancy. G. lutea is reported as being threatened not only by root harvesting practices, but also by global climatic warming due to its distribution, which is restricted mainly to the upper sectors of the mountains. Especially in mountain areas, climate warming is projected to shift species’ ranges to higher elevations. Plant species have responded to global warming through a generally accelerated phenology, enhanced growth and increased reproductive effort. Even fewer studies have addressed such response of the populations at the boundary of species range distributions which are thought to be particularly sensitive to climate change, hence it was evaluated the effect of anomalous temperatures (extremely warm) during the year of 2015 on phenology and reproductive successful. Monitoring the underlying drivers of this variation in phenological shifts will contribute to a mechanistic understanding of the biological effects of climate change. Finally, the criteria established by the IUCN that are widely employed as the gold standard for information on the conservation status of species were applied at regional scale for G. lutea. The assessment through the IUCN Criteria and Categories at global level was updated as Least Concern (LC) and at Italian level as Near Threatened (NT). Considering the regional level, the only previous assessment in Sardinia date to back to 1997 as Critically Endangered (CR), this work will contribute to an implementation of knowledge and conservation management for this taxon. An updating of local conservation status of G. lutea was thus provided by the analysis of its decline and comparing its potential suitable habitats based on the emissions scenarios presented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for 2050 and 2070.

Abstract:
Chronic hyperglycemia in diabetes leads to macro and microvascular complications. An increase in the aldose reductase (ALR2) activity, accumulation of sorbitol, accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), and inflammation lead to cellular damage, ultimately resulting in complications. ALR2 inhibition has been a consideration to treat/manage diabetic complications, but most of the ALR2 inhibitors are not free of side effects. As a part of our work to find better ALR2 inhibitors, we found that extracts of Gentiana lutea exhibited ALR2 inhibitory potential in vitro. We have also discovered the anti-atherosclerotic potential of G. lutea when supplemented its root powder (2% in the AIN-93 diet) to diabetic rats. Our very recent work suggests the reno-protective effect of G. lutea supplementation (0.2% and 2% in the AIN-93 diet). Here, we summarize our work on the role of G. lutea in preventing macrovascular complications of diabetes like atherosclerosis and microvascular complications like nephropathy and, hence, its potential as an adjunct therapy for diabetic complications.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Gentiana lutea root extract displays protective effects, including activity against oxidative stress, inflammation, and effects on the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. Plant-derived compounds could protect against disease progression by regulating homeostasis and eliminating damaged cells, acting like pro-apoptotic agents. In this work, we aimed to test the impact of cytotoxic concentrations of Gentiana lutea root extract on the activation of apoptosis, a controlled cell death mechanism, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Apoptotic DNA degradation was tested by a fragmentation assay. Immunoblot was used to detect proteins Bcl2, Bax, cleaved PARP1, and caspase3 as markers of apoptosis. We detected a high level of DNA fragmentation, an elevation of the Bax, cleaved caspase3, and PARP1 fragments that are indicators of cell death by apoptosis. Gentiana lutea root extract cytotoxic concentration eliminated cells with limited response to xenobiotic exposure by apoptosis.
