Abstract:
In questo saggio si svolgerà una comparazione dei tre brevi romanzi di Calvino La formica argentina (1952), La nuvola di smog (1958), La speculazione edilizia (1957), con le opere di Malerba in cui maggiormente emerge il suo impegno ecologico: Il serpente (1966), Salto mortale (1968) e Fantasmi romani (2006). Tra questi romanzi che trattano con nerbo la tematica etico-ambientale, esiste un dialogo molto forte a livello testuale e ideologico, certamente maturato dall’amicizia e dagli scambi tra i due autori. Malerba e Calvino, uomini di città cresciuti però in stretto rapporto con la campagna, si rivelano attenti osservatori dei mutamenti economici, antropologici e ambientali che l’Italia subiva nell’epoca del boom. Lontana da qualsiasi lirismo romantico e da sentimenti nostalgici per un mitico passato, la relazione tra letteratura e ambiente affiora nei testi come una forma di denuncia ecologica contro inquinamento, speculazione edilizia e sottomissione degli organismi non-umani. Sia Malerba sia Calvino si fanno portavoce della necessità di smascherare le ideologie dominanti e boicottare le logiche binarie come natura / cultura. Nella battaglia che inscenano tra umano e non-umano emerge la loro prospettiva “ecocentrica” che attribuisce un valore intrinseco ad ogni organismo vivente e al loro spazio naturale a prescindere dalla loro utilità e profitto per l’essere umano. Abstract This essay compares Italo Calvino’s short novels La Formica Argentina (1952), La Nuvola di Smog (1958), and La Speculazione Edilizia (1957), with Luigi Malerba’s works, in which his strong environmental consciousness most comes to light: Il Serpente (1966), Salto Mortale (1968) and Fantasmi Romani (2006). These works engage in a textual and ideological “ecocentric” dialogue about the environment and society, which was certainly the result of the close friendship and professional exchanges between the two authors. This project thus participates in ecocriticism through an investigation of the textual and ideological dialogue between these texts. Rather than merely romantic lyricism and feelings of nostalgia for the mythical past, the relationship between literature and the environment emerges in the texts as a form of ecological denunciation against pollution, building development, and the subjugation of non-human organisms. Malerba and Calvino, city men who spent their upbringing in close contact with nature, reveal themselves to be attentive observers of the economical, anthropological, and environmental changes that Italy underwent in the period known as the economic boom. Both Malerba and Calvino bring to the fore the urgency to unmask dominant ideologies and to boycott perceived binary oppositions of nature versus culture. Through these texts, they stage a battle between the human and non-human, bringing together their “ecocentric” perspective with their goal of bestowing an intrinsic value to every living organism and their natural space. Resumen Este ensayo compara tres novelas cortas de Italo Calvino La formica argentina (1952), La nuvola di smog (1958), La speculazione edilizia (1957), con las obras de Luigi Malerba, en las que más manifiesta su empeño ecológico: Il serpente (1966), Salto mortale (1968) e Fantasmi romani (2006). Entre estas novelas, que tratan con vigor la temática ético-medioambientalista, existe un diálogo muy fuerte a un nivel textual e ideológico, ciertamente madurado desde la amistad y los intercambios entre los dos autores. Malerba y Calvino, hombres de ciudad pero que crecieron en cercano contacto con la naturaleza, se revelan cuidadosos observadores de los mutaciones económicas, antropológicas y medioambientales que el Italia sufría en la época del boom de los años cincuenta y sesenta. Lejana de cualquier lirismo romántico y de sentimientos nostálgicos por un pasado mítico, la relación entre literatura y medio ambiente aparece en los textos como una forma de denuncia ecológica contra la contaminación, la especulación edil y la sumisión de los organismos no-humanos. Tanto Malerba como Calvino devienen portavoces de la necesitad de desenmascarar las ideologías dominantes y boicotear las lógicas binarias como naturaleza / cultura. En la lucha que escenifican entre el humano y no-humano emerge su perspectiva “ecocéntrica” que atribuye un valor intrínseco a cada organismo viviente y a su espacio natural sin importar los beneficios económicos.

Abstract:
In questo saggio si vogliono prendere in disamina due testi di Luigi Malerba: Il viaggiatore sedentario (1993) e Città e dintorni (2001). Questi testi odeporici raccontano i viaggi di Malerba in Cina, Thailandia, Europa, Nord America, Grecia e Asia Minore e raccolgono le riflessioni dell’autore nate e rielaborate lungo un ampio arco di tempo. Grazie al supporto teorico offerto dal lavoro di studiosi quali Serenella Iovino, Serpil Oppermann, Ursula Heise e Rob Nixon, quest’articolo evidenzia la sensibilità postmoderna di Malerba verso l’ambiente e la sua maestria nel raffigurare il rapporto complementare esistente tra l’essere umano e la natura, tra l’umano e il non-umano. Dalle pagine di questi testi odeporici emerge, con forza, la figura di un uomo sensibile, intelligente, curioso, ironico e attento alle storie di tutti quegli esseri ignoti di passaggio sul pianeta Terra. Le osservazioni di Malerba non cadono mai in localismo nostalgico e tantomeno in “utopia regressiva” (Parole al vento 230). L’autore, invece, mostra rispetto e premura per ogni luogo, abitazione, cultura e popolo con cui entra in contatto nei sui numerosi viaggi a “zig-zag” (Viaggiatore 8) sempre fatti in compagnia della moglie Anna Lapenna.

Abstract:
Questo studio è un’analisi testuale di Fantasmi romani (2006) che mira ad illustrare come sia avvenuto un mutamento ideologico nella poetica di Luigi Malerba, che da autore di romanzi divertente e divertito, si presenta ora come un commentatore amareggiato dell’epoca contemporanea. Avvalendomi delle teorie di Remo Cesarani e di Fredric Jameson, secondo cui in conseguenza del tramonto delle “grandi metanarrazioni”, sono apparse nuove forme dello spazio cittadino e nuove tendenze architettoniche, analizzo come i protagonisti di Fantasmi romani vivano in uno stato di disagio e “smarrimento esistenziale” all’interno della metropoli romana. Laddove il personaggio di Clarissa cercherà di orientarsi leggendo i segni magici che la città le offre, l’architetto Giano prima porterà avanti il suo progetto architettonico di distruggere e ricostruire una nuova Roma; poi, attraverso il suo romanzo, cercherà invano di riordinare e dunque, cambiare, la società in cui vive. La consapevolezza del fallimento del progetto utopistico (l’architettura) e della creazione di un romanzo (la scrittura), è il segno di una preoccupazione radicata da parte dell’autore per lo stato attuale delle cose. Se inizialmente la cognizione della crisi ecologica, culturale, relazionale che percorre le pagine degli scritti malerbiani era mitigata da divertissement filologico, gioco linguistico e coinvolgente comicità in romanzi come ad esempio Il serpente, Salto mortale, il Protagonista, essa affiora invece nel testo dell’ultimo romanzo attraverso un sentimento di sfiducia e rassegnazione.

The purpose of this series is to complement the indirect approach of investigating strategies of literary naming in literary texts by directly questioning those who give names to literary characters or places. The interviews are to provide evidence of tendencies in literary naming in contemporary Italian writers. General conclusions will in due course be drawn from the material to be presented in the series. The present interview with Luigi Malerba was conducted in Rome on 30 April 2005.

Abstract:
Cette these se propose d'examiner le genre fantastique italien de ces dernieres annees (en se basant sur cinq auteurs peu etudies), afin de signaler les mutations mais aussi les ressemblances avec les fantastiques anterieurs. Un bref panorama de l'histoire du fantastique en europe et en italie montre les differentes etapes de cette litterature et a surtout pour but de prouver l'existence, longtemps niee, d'un tel genre en italie. Une partie est consacree aux definitions du fantastique et souligne la difficulte a donner une definition unique du genre, valable pour tous les textes et toutes les epoques. Le fantastique ayant evolue, ses definitions sont elles aussi sans frontieres immuables. Cependant certains points se retrouvent avec plus ou moins d'intensite selon les oeuvres et les periodes. L'analyse de l'aspect syntaxique, verbal et semantique, permet de donner une vision du fantastique moderne, de mettre en evidence les ruptures survenues mais egalement de souligner une certaine continuite. La confrontation de differentes theories critiques a abouti a une definition personnelle qui met en relief la richesse et l'entendue du genre. L'etude de cinq auteurs jalonnant le xxeme siecle prouve la vitalite du genre et ses differentes facettes. G. Vigolo, t. Landolfi, l. Malerba, a. Tabucchi et s. Benni illustrent le fantastique dans sa modernite, un fantastique qui puise parfois dans la tradition mais qui innove tres souvent, un fantastique pluriel, fruit et moteur de l'evolution.

Abstract:
Irony: metafiction in Luigi Malerba’s works. In this thesis I examine irony and metafiction in some novels by Italian writer Luigi Malerba (1927-2008). Metafiction characterizes all of Malerba’s works; this dissertation shows how Malerba’s works constantly draw attention to themselves and consequently encourage readers to pose questions about the existing relationship between fiction and reality. Similarly, irony fosters further investigation of language as sign system; through recurrent word games, Malerba removes the certainty of a univocal existing correspondence between signifier and signified. In the first chapter I discuss the very first works by the author: Le lettere di Ottavia, Il serpente, Salto mortale and Il protagonista. The entire chapter revolves around the construction of possible worlds and, therefore, of fictional worlds. Through this analysis the borders between fiction and reality appear to be quite weak; they are indeed proved to be an illusory construction of contemporary human beings who tend to think according to binary oppositions, such as reality and dream, reality and fiction. I proceed by examining Storie dell’anno mille, Il pataffio, I cani di Gerusalemme and Le maschere; these novels are imbued with history. The central theme of the entire chapter is history and fabulation and their relationship to each other. History is shown to be part of human discourse: historical events are made out of pure chronicles by a process called emplotment. The form that the historical narration takes on inevitably influences the meaning of the events narrated. In the third chapter I analyze Le pietre volanti, La superficie di Eliane and Il circolo di Granada. Here I demonstrate how Malerba uses detective novels in a non-canonical way, turning his own works into anti-detective novels. In these works, the investigation does not reach any rewarding ending; even at the conclusion of the story, the detective’s hypothesis cannot be completely ruled out and the reader is left with what Stefano Tani calls a “fiction of possibilities”. Fantasmi romani occupies the whole chapter four. In this final chapter I discuss why this work, the very last one before the author’s death, can be considered his literary testament. In this novel, Malerba’s readers can find all the peculiarities which have distinguished the author’s writing for more than four decades. Along with recognizing his style, readers will appreciate new developments in his narration. This work encourages readers to investigate the consuming relationship which can be established between a writer and his reader. In the end of this thesis, some considerations for further investigation are made; these considerations focus on Luigi Malerba’s writing for children, an area of study that has received little critical attention.

Il matrimonio, insieme alla famiglia, è uno tra i più antichi istituti sociali con fondamento biologico. La sua origine si spiega con la necessità di regolare la vita sessuale ed economica degli esseri umani e storicamente fa riferimento all’unione tra un uomo e una donna. In quanto fonte di narrazione, il matrimonio si presta ad essere oggetto di analisi critica e la presente ricerca si concentra sulla rappresentazione letteraria della scena matrimoniale quale luogo privilegiato per la sperimentazione della scrittura romanzesca di Luigi Malerba (1927-2008). Nell’opera narrativa dell’autore parmense infatti l’argomento matrimoniale è una costante al punto da far presumere che la scena coniugale sia particolarmente adatta ad accogliere le istanze sperimentali della sua scrittura. Ad una introduzione di carattere esplicativo segue un capitolo di raccordo finalizzato a contestualizzare la poetica malerbiana. L’individuazione di un corpus testuale (racconti e romanzi) inerente l’argomento trattato e la compilazione della relativa bibliografia di riferimento ha messo in luce, accanto al tema matrimoniale, influenze provenienti dalla neoavanguardia, dalla filosofia e dalle scienze matematiche e fisiche. Nel secondo capitolo, il lavoro si concentra sulla rappresentazione della scena maritale da un punto di vista della forma-romanzo, ne analizza i temi e il sovvertimento dei relativi clichés. Attraverso un approccio comparatistico la ricerca si rivolge ai casi specifici dei romanzi Itaca per sempre (1997), riscrittura dei libri XIII-XXIV dell’Odissea, e Fantasmi romani (2006) a confronto con i romanzi E non disse nemmeno una parola (Und sagte kein enziges Wort) scritto da Heinrich Böll nel 1953 e L’amore bugiardo (Gone Girl) scritto da Gillian Flynn nel 2014. Nel terzo capitolo, invece, si ripropone la questione della riscrittura già affiorata nel romanzo Itaca per sempre: alla fine degli anni Settanta, Malerba aveva lavorato, con un duplice sentimento d’amore e d’odio, alla sceneggiatura del celebre teleromanzo di Rete 2 in sei puntate tratto dall’omonimo romanzo Madame Bovary di Gustave Flaubert. Fin dall’inizio, dunque, la tensione tragica insita nel tema d’amore e nella relazione matrimoniale dominata dall’archetipo della passione e del raggiungimento della felicità è forse uno tra gli stimoli più fecondi per la sperimentazione narrativa di Luigi Malerba: scrittore dotato di una profonda conoscenza del genere umano, sempre attento ai comportamenti sociali scanditi da riti e convenzioni, ma dotato di una scrittura ironico-comica insolita nella letteratura italiana, Malerba riesce tratteggiare la scena matrimoniale con una pregevole varietà e completezza di rappresentazioni.

Abstract:
Alberto Arbasino and Luigi Malerba visited China as members of Italian authors’ delegation in 1980 and published respectively their travel reportage Trans-Pacific Express (1981) and Cina Cina (1985). Arbasino travelled to many countries and published several travel books. Malerba was particularly fond of China. During their visits, Arbasino and Malerba were the closest of travel companions. There are, in fact, many similarities and differences in their travel writings. The two authors were representatives of Gruppo ’63 in the literary movement Neoavanguardia. Based on the richness and flexibility of this literary genre, they also adopted this innovative style of writing. In terms of the narrative structure, in both there does not appear to be a clear itinerary or a logic to their travels. Regarding their linguistic styles, Arbasino’s writing is rich of rhetorical forms, whereas Malerba’s book is imagery, resembling a fairy-tale. For the two authors, China represents a series of incomprehensible signs. Arbasino transforms these signs into elements of literary invention, while Malerba sees the travel destination as a place of imagination. China is a literary space between imagination and reality in their travel writings.
