Abstract:

Abstract:
The speciation of the heavy metals Cu, Cr, and Pb in surface sediment samples collected from Lugu Lake in China was analyzed by European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction methods. Heavy metal bioavailability was assessed by risk assessment code. This study demonstrates that BCR sequential extraction methods and risk assessment code can be used as valuable tools to assess heavy metal mobility, bioavailability and eco-toxicity. The distribution of Cu, Cr, and Pb in the surface sediment of Lugu Lake showed that all three metals were mainly present in the reducible fraction. The bioavailability of the heavy metals in the surface sediment was in the order Cu > Cr > Pb.

Abstract:
The connection of the Unistrut “System 1” double layer grid space frame transfers loads statically indeterminately from a member to the connection plate through two lugs and a bolt. The connection is studied by Finite Element analysis, design code analysis and a series of experimental tests. There is quite good agreement between the analysis methods and fair agreement with the tests. The test series isolates the contributions of the individual load paths showing quite good correspondence. The failure of the lugs in an unpredicted shear mode is the major cause for discrepancies. However, analysis of that shear mode is consistent with the tests.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ab initio density functional calculations were performed on a toroidal carbon C120 nanostructure with a single beryllium atom bonded to its outer surface. These calculations are based on DFT with the generalized gradient approximation PW91 (Perdew and Wang) as implemented in the Materials Studio v.4.3 code. The Dmol3 module was used to calculate, among others, total energy, charge density, HOMO-LUMO and Mulliken population analysis. On the basis of these results, the beryllium-coated toroidal carbon C120 nanostructure appears to be a good candidate for H2 storage with moderate adsorption energy.

Abstract:
The object of study of this work is focused in finding the enunciation marks of melancholy category, as proposed by Freudian Psychoanalytic Theory, in the narrative of the tales of the Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga, melancholy that led to death, sometimes by suicide. Indeed, great part of Quiroguian narrative is centered in the thematic of death with its characters succumbing in a tragic and unexpected way, sometimes with no apparent reasons. There is a “let-to-die” that appears with notorious insistence to the extent of being death, together with the struggle with nature, the central thematic of the author. The reading here approached intends to show how these final acts of life are originated by characters’ melancholy, pathological melancholy moods caused by the loss of the object of desire that no longer is found, by the displacement of the shadow of that object to the ego that, through emotional ambivalence of the love-hate binomial, will cause that death as an inevitable fate.

Abstract:
Soil is one of the largest reservoirs of microbial biodiversity and an important resource for biotechnological exploitation. Such biodiversity is not evenly distributed in this environment, and the plant cover exerts great influence on the soil microbial community composition. This phenomenon is known as rhizosphere effect, inducing some bacterial species to increase their populations according to the quality and quantity of root exudates. In this sense, is important to study the interactions of some economically important crops with soil bacteria that may promote their growth. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the rhizosphere effect promoted by two Solanum species, S. lycopersicum (tomato) and S. quitoense (lulo) on the community of nitrogen fixing-bacteria in soils under different three types of management as secondary forest (SF), conventional horticultural (CH) and organic (ORG). The nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated using nitrogen-free semi-solid media (JMV NFb, JNFb, LGI and LGI-P) and its population were quantified by the most probable number (MPN) technique. The taxonomic position of isolates was performed by the partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, using the Shannon-Wiener index to determine variations in biodiversity between treatments. The isolates were also characterized for its plant growth-promotion traits, as indole compounds production, siderophores production and solubilization of inorganic phosphates. A total of 117 bacterial isolates in populations above 1x104 cells g-1 of rhizosphere or soil were obtained and taxonomically positioned within the following genera: Rhizobium (60 isolates); Pseudomonas (15 isolates); Burkholderia (12 isolates); Enterobacter and Variovorax (6 isolates each); Cupriavidus and Massilia (3 isolates each); Stenotrophomonas and Roseateles (2 isolates each); Bacillus, Herbaspirillum, Xanthomonas, Novosphingobium and Caulobacter (a single isolate each). Differences in the qualitative and quantitative composition of diazotrophic community associated to different Solanum species were found, with lower diazotroph diversity in the rhizosphere of S. lycopersicum or S. quitoense as compared to soil, although its population size was increased in the rhizosphere of S. lycopersicum - mainly related to Rhizobium isolates, regardless the soil management studied. The biochemical characterization of isolates allowed the identification of 54 isolates with indole compounds production ability, siderophores production ability in 49 isolates, FePO4 solubilization ability was detected in 84 isolates and AlPO4 solubilization was observed in 49 isolates. From the total of isolates obtained, 49% showed potential application as tomato growth-promoters, from which 32% were isolated from soil, 40% from the tomato rhizosphere and 28% from the rhizosphere of lulo.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The continuous evolution of information security threats, coupled with increasing sophistication of malicious codes and the greater flexibility in working practices demanded by organizations and individual users, have imposed further burdens on the development of effective anti-malware defenses. Despite the fact that the IT community is endeavoring to prevent and thwart security threats, the Internet is perceived as the medium that transmits not only legitimate information but also malicious codes. In this cat-and-mouse predicament, it is widely acknowledged that, as new security countermeasures arise, malware authors are always able to learn how to manipulate the loopholes or vulnerabilities of these technologies, and can thereby weaponize new streams of malicious attacks. From e-mail attachments embedded with Trojan horses to recent advanced malware attacks such as Gozi programs, which compromise and transmit users’ highly sensitive information in a clandestine way, malware continues to evolve to be increasingly surreptitious and deadly. This trend of malware development seems foreseeable, yet making it increasingly arduous for organizations and/or individuals to detect and remove malicious codes and to defend against profit-driven perpetrators in the cyber world. This article introduces new malware threats such as ransomware, spyware, and rootkits, discusses the trends of malware development, and provides analysis for malware defenses. Keywords: Ransomware, Spyware, Anti-Virus, Malware, Malicious Code, Background Various forms of malware have been a part of the computing environment since before the implementation of the public Internet. However, the Internet’s ubiquity has ushered in an explosion in the severity and complexity of various forms of malicious applications delivered via increasingly ingenious methods. The original malware attacks were perpetrated via e-mail attachments, but new vulnerabilities have been identified and exploited by a variety of perpetrators who range from merely curious hackers to sophisticated organized criminals and identify thieves. In an earlier manuscript (Luo & Warkentin, 2005), the authors established the basic taxonomy of malware that included various types of computer viruses (boot sector viruses, macro viruses, etc.), worms, and Trojan horses. Since that time, numerous new forms of malicious code have been found “in the wild.”

Abstract:
The compound 2-[2-(4-methylphenylamino)-4-phenylthiazol-5-yl]benzofuran was prepared from 1-(4-methylphenyl)-3-(N-phenylbenzimidoyl)thiourea and 2-(2-bromoacetyl) benzofuran in the presence of triethylamine and characterized by FTIR, NMR, and mass spectra. Density functional theory (DFT) computations were adopted for the geometry optimization of this compound, to evaluate their Mulliken atomic charge distribution, HOMO-LUMO energy gap, and vibrational analysis. The titled compound induced G1 cell cycle arrest, which is regulated by CDK2 in cancer cells. Therefore, we used molecular modeling to study in-silico for the possible inhibitory effect as a mechanism of this compound as anticancer agents (PDB code: 2KW6, 6DL7, 6VJO, 6WMW, and 7LAE). The molecular docking study revealed that the compound was the most effective in inhibiting CDk2 cancer cells.

Abstract:
Anchoring structures, systems and components to concrete is a significant activity in the design and construction of a nuclear power plant. Early in this decade the Concrete Capacity Design method (CCD) was adopted by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) for use in the structural design for both commercial and nuclear facilities. This design method and associated qualification tests brings new challenges to designing efficient means for anchoring to concrete structures. Although the CCD method provides guidance on many aspects of concrete anchorage there are a few areas, pertinent to nuclear power plant construction, that are not covered or require significant interpretation of the most recent codes. This paper will focus on the design of shear lugs used to resist significant lateral loads. Results from laboratory tests of shear lugs are presented. These full scale tests considered the interaction of tension and shear loads on the performance of shear lug assemblies. Recommendations for the efficient use of shear lugs are provided.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents a critical review of the newly published ASME BTH-1-2005, which is intended to be a companion to ASME B30.20, Below the Hook Lifting Devices, a safety standard. The very limited structural design criteria contained in the latter standard was previously addressed in the literature by the current author and was compared against the various national and international regulations, codes, and standards in regard to the presumed factors of safety inherent in the designs of vessel lifting lugs. Based upon the criteria previously outlined and addressed, the current American National Standard ASME BTH-1-2005 is critically reviewed and the commentary that is now incorporated in such is analyzed in an effort to determine the adequacy of the updates in meeting and exceeding the current regulations in both the United States and Canada. The statutory and provincial regulations in both the United States and the province of Alberta, Canada are also reviewed and discussed with respect to the too often utilized phrase “factor of safety” (FOS). The implied implications derived from the chosen FOS are also outlined. Exemplar lugs on vessels are defined and the finite element analyses and closed form Hertzian contact problem solutions are presented and interpreted in accordance with the new ASME BTH-1-2005 structural design criteria. These results are again highlighted against the very limited design information contained within ASME B30.20. A review of the author’s prior recommendations made to revise the ASME B30.20 Below the Hook Lifting Devices safety standard are presented and discussed in light of the examples and technical justification presented in the following paragraphs. Contact stresses that are well known to exist between a lifting pin and clevis type geometry are also discussed in light of the new structural design criteria contained within ASME BTH-1-2005. Additional recommendations are provided for the design and analysis of vessel lifting lugs in consideration of current regulations.

Abstract:
Unsteady behaviour of a new fluid-beam model for flow in collapsible channels is studied in this paper. A finite element code is developed to solve the fully fluid-structure interaction unsteady problem with method of rotating spines. The self-excited oscillations for different parameters are calculated and compared with these of the earlier fluid-membrane model by Luo & Pedley (1996). A stability line in the tension – wall stiffness space is identified which seems to associate with the small amplitude oscillations which are found only in the new model. As tension is reduced from the stability line, the oscillations undergo a change in amplitude and through to period doubling, highly irregular oscillations with chaotic-like behaviour, and finally divergent. The transition of these different types of oscillations, however, depends on the value of the wall stiffness which is new in this model.
