Abstract:
Wesley McNair said that poets, more than others, are troubled by the transience of life, and they write poems to preserve the experience—to say, “I was here, and my being here meant something.” Lucky Boy is a collection informed by experience—childhood trauma, limitations of place and circumstance, the messy transition from boyhood to manhood. The poems are my attempt to preserve and elevate these experiences, to acknowledge their complicatedness, and to celebrate the role they played in making a poet

Abstract:
Lucky Creature is a collection of poems that considers particular aspects of being human, specifically love, death, isolation, and the nature of knowledge. A primary concern is the body, explored as a vehicle for shame. The role of imagination as a means of escape is also paramount, leading always toward an act of transformation as a chance at immortality in an entropic universe where everything has a shelf life.

Crass, Jonathan. "The Adaptive Optics Lucky Imager : combining adaptive optics and lucky imaging." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2014. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/245653.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the highest resolution astronomical images ever taken in the visible were obtained by combining the techniques of adaptive optics and lucky imaging. The Adaptive Optics Lucky Imager (AOLI), being developed at Cambridge as part of a European collaboration, combines these two techniques in a dedicated instrument for the first time. The instrument is designed initially for use on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) on the Canary Island of La Palma. This thesis describes the development of AOLI, in particular the adaptive optics system and a new type of wavefront sensor, the non-linear curvature wavefront sensor (nlCWFS), being used within the instrument. The development of the nlCWFS has been the focus of my work, bringing the technique from a theoretical concept to physical realisation at the WHT in September 2013. The non-linear curvature wavefront sensor is based on the technique employed in the conventional curvature wavefront sensor where two image planes are located equidistant either side of a pupil plane. Two pairs of images are employed in the nlCWFS providing increased sensitivity to both high- and low- order wavefront distortions. This sensitivity is the reason the nlCWFS was selected for use with AOLI as it will provide significant sky-coverage using natural guide stars alone, mitigating the need for laser guide stars. This thesis is structured into three main sections; the first introduces the non-linear curvature wavefront sensor, the relevant background and a discussion of simulations undertaken to investigate intrinsic effects. The iterative reconstruction algorithm required for wavefront reconstruction is also introduced. The second section discusses the practical implementation of the nlCWFS using two demonstration systems as the precursor to the optical design used at the WHT and includes details of subsequent design changes. The final section discusses data from both the WHT and a laboratory setup developed at Cambridge following the observing run. The long-term goal for AOLI is to undertake science observations on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias, the world's largest optical telescope. The combination of AO and lucky imaging, when used on this telescope, will provide resolutions a factor of two higher than ever before achieved at visible wavelengths. This offers the opportunity to probe the Cosmos in unprecedented detail and has the potential to significantly advance our understanding of the Universe.

Abstract:
With the onset of one of the worst economic downturns in recent history, the face of poverty is changing. This project seeks to explore a design solution aimed at helping a newly emerging segment of the population: the “half homeless”, formerly middle class individuals/families who lost their jobs and homes during the recession. Set in the building known as the Lucky Strike Power Plant, the project contains two distinct, but overlapping, programs: 1) multi-family housing, and 2) a continuum of supportive services accessible to both the residents and the community at large. The main focus of this project is the housing component; more specifically, exploring an unconventional housing typology designed to encourage interaction between the residents, as well as the residents and non-residents. Ultimately, this project is a study of how through the interplay between public vs. private and mass vs. void, design can heal, inspire, and bring people together.

Abstract:

Tubbs, Robert Nigel. "Lucky exposures : diffraction limited astronomical imaging through the atmosphere." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2003. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/224517.

Full text
Abstract:
The resolution of astronomical imaging from large optical telescopes is usually limited by the blurring effects of refractive index fluctuations in the Earth's atmosphere. By taking a large number of short exposure images through the atmosphere, and then selecting, re-centring and co-adding the best images this resolution limit can be overcome. This approach has significant benefits over other techniques for high-resolution optical imaging from the ground. In particular the reference stars used for our method (the Lucky Exposures technique) can generally be fainter than those required for the natural guide star adaptive optics approach or those required for other speckle imaging techniques. The low complexity and low instrumentation costs associated with the Lucky Exposures method make it appealing for medium-sized astronomical observatories. The method can provide essentially diffraction-limited I-band imaging from well-figured ground-based telescopes as large as 2.5 m diameter. The faint limiting magnitude and large isoplanatic patch size for the Lucky Exposures technique at the Nordic Optical Telescope means that 25% of the night sky is within range of a suitable reference star for I-band imaging. Typically the 1%-10% of exposures with the highest Strehl ratios are selected. When these exposures are shifted and added together, field stars in the resulting images have Strehl ratios as high as 0.26 and full width at half maximum flux (FWHM) as small as 90 milliarc seconds. Within the selected exposures the isoplanatic patch is found to be up to 60 arc seconds in diameter at 810 nm wavelength. Images within globular clusters and of multiple stars from the Nordic Optical Telescope using reference stars as faint as I 16 are presented. A new generation of CCDs (Marconi L3Vision CCDs) were used in these observations, allowing extremely low noise high frame-rate imaging with both fine pixel sampling and a relatively wide field of view. The theoretical performance of these CCDs is compared with the experimental results obtained.

Ngubane, Dumisani Lucky. "An investigation of financial accountability in schools / Dumisani Lucky Ngubane." Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/3090.

Full text
Abstract:
This study set to investigate how School Governing Bodies (SGBs) currently execute financial accountability. This is because schools are funded mostly from public funds, and are directed to be accountable to stakeholders by the South African Schools Act No. 84 of 1996 and the Public Finance Management Act No. 1 of 1999. This means that school financial accountability is a legal requirement in terms of the laws relating to school governance and public finance management. Financial accountability, entails reporting to stakeholders in terms of how funds have been expended in relation to the mandate given to the school's accounting officer. In the case of schools, this combines the school principal and the SGB. This implies the implementation of financial accountability elements namely, financial planning, controlling, monitoring and reporting. The empirical research quantitatively used the questionnaire and qualitatively used interviews to investigate how SGBs practiced financial accountability. While the quantitative survey revealed that SGBs were financially accountable, the interviews provided insight into the phenomenon, which indicated gaps in school financial accountability namely: lack of capacity to perform financial accountability functions; poor monitoring of schools' financial management and accountability performances, both by Departmental officials and schools themselves; poor adherence to policy prescriptions as provided for in the South African Schools Act and the Public Finance Management Act. It is therefore recommended that SGBs should explore simplification of financial accountability language to suit the parents' level of understanding; principals and educators need capacity -building to be able to handle communication with parents who are not educated; Departmental officials constantly to monitor and support schools in their financial accountability processes; and that Departmental Units should establish information 'feeding' channels so as to identify needs for development and support across the units, so as to intervene timely in areas needing intervention, and principals need to establish peer - assistance networks at local level so as to learn from examples of good practices from their colleagues.

Full text
Abstract:
The fund market has grown substantially during the past decades and the majority of Swedish citizens are invested in funds directly or through pension savings. There is mixed evidence on the performance of Swedish equity funds depending on the method employed and the time period studied. In this study, we set out to estimate abnormal performance using acknowledged methods during a time-period that is both longer and more recent than previous studies. Our sample is survivorship-free and consists of 150 mutual equity funds during January 1993 to December 2011. We use a four-factor model to estimate abnormal performance compared to an index and additional risk factors. We find that the average performance is neutral net of costs and that funds outperform with 1.7 percent before costs, the difference is approximately the average management fee. Over time, we find that the average abnormal performance and the share of funds that have significant outperformance have decreased while the share of significant underperformance has increased. Since the study of fund performance started in the 1960's the twin questions has been; does funds outperform the market and is this a result of pure chance or are managers skilled? Since we observe funds with significant positive and negative abnormal performance, we want to know if the results can attributed to luck or skill. We employ the latest technique, a bootstrap simulation, to test for skill or luck. This is the first study to employ the bootstrap to distinguish skill from luck in sample of Swedish funds. By ranking funds on performance after costs, we find that the performance of the majority of funds can be attributed to skill or "bad skill". The evidence is strongest in the top 95th percentile and above, and from the bottom 50th percentile and below.

Bryce, Christy. "Lucky Pennies and Four Leaf Clovers: Young Children's Understanding of Superstitions." TopSCHOLAR®, 2002. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/619.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of organized, explanatory systems of knowledge is an integral part of human nature; it allows us to categorize objects and events and to make predictions based on our experiences. In our society, the quest for answers to the questions "How?" and "Why?" begins early in life. By the preschool years, children are actively seeking and providing explanations for an abundance of physical and social events, and they are developing knowledge of causal forces at work in the environment (Bullock, Gelman, & Baillargeon, 1982; Rosengren & Hickling, 1999). Paradoxically, at about the same age at which children demonstrate they have a fundamental understanding of natural causal forces operating in the world, they are introduced by our culture to concepts and beliefs that seem to contradict their early theories. For example, children learn of popular superstitions (e.g., a four-leaf clover bringing good luck) that employ causal mechanisms outside the realm of natural laws governing the physical world. This concept raises the question of whether or not children with a fairly sophisticated understanding of normal causal forces believe in superstitions and, if so, how they reconcile these supernatural beliefs with their knowledge of natural causal relations. The aim of this study was to examine young children's understanding of superstitions. Children between the ages of 5 and 9 received a set of interview questions concerning their experiences with superstitions (e.g., "Do you know what a superstition is?"); their beliefs about the efficacy of superstitions (e.g., "Do superstitions always come true or just some of the time?"); and their knowledge of the mental and physical components of superstitions (e.g., "Do you have to believe it will come true for it to really happen?"). Participants also completed a belief task designed to assess the relative importance of belief and action in superstitions. The findings indicate developmental patterns in childrenn's awareness of superstitions and beliefs in efficacy of superstitions. With age, children demonstrated a significantly greater awareness of superstitions. In contrast, children demonstrated a significant decrease in beliefs in the efficacy of superstitions by the age of seven. Regarding children's perceptions of the necessary components of superstitions, there were important similarities in the developmental pattern of children's responses. Across all age groups, the action component of a superstition (as opposed to the belief component) was found to be the primary factor in the effectiveness of superstitions to "bring good luck." These findings are discussed in relation to children's beliefs about magic, wishing, and prayer, and the potential modes of cultural transmission of supernatural beliefs.

Tham, Mathilda. "Lucky People Forecast : a systemic futures perspective on fashion and sustainability." Doctoral thesis, Goldsmiths, University of London, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-40511.

Abstract:
The detrimental environmental effects associated with fashion production and consumption are increasingly recognised, and strategies in place. However, these are production-focused, top-down strategies, which do not reach where the impact is highest - the user phase, or where the scope for improvement is utmost - the design phase. A growing body of academic research, and a niche representation of practitioners have responded by developing lifecycle and whole systems approaches. This PhD thesis seeks to expand on and bring this knowledge to the unexplored domain of the highest impact – the fashion industry’s mass-market segment. Trend-forecasting is integral to the fashion design process, and supports the organisation’s commercial endeavours. This thesis explores the potential of trend-forecasting as a positive agent of change for environmental improvement at systemic level in the fashion industry’s mass-market segment. The first empirical study, Stage 1, is diagnostic and exploratory, mapping the interactions that currently exist between trend-forecasting, fashion design and environmental work. The findings and emergent theories formed the basis for a novel methodology compatible with trend-forecasting methods, processes in fashion design, and the inclusive and transformative processes implicit in sustainability. Stage 2 applies this methodology in an experimental study - a series of creative workshops with mixed fashion industry stakeholder groups in the UK and Sweden. Set in 2026, the workshops explore how the underlying proposition “what if fashion and sustainability were compatible or even synergistic?” could affect attitudinal change, and what its generative potential could be. The study shows that a richer knowledge ecology can foster proactive discussions in the realm of sustainability and fashion. It also reveals how a futures perspective and creative approach can unleash the application of fashion professionals’ skills at strategic and systemic levels. The research resulted in recommendations for the application of the new trend-forecasting methodology on a larger scale.

Abstract:
Founded in 1989 by Lucrecia Carrión Romero, Lucky emerged as a business opportunity that consisted in providing marketing services Below the line (BTL) to the company she worked for, currently Alicorp. Over time, the organization has developed and consolidated three business lines: Lucky Trade, which promotes the management of distribution channels for goods produced by its customers; Lucky Promo, focused on the development of high impact promotion at the point of sale; and Lucky Xplora, which provides real-time information on management results at points of sale. The review of sustainability reports according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard prepared by Lucky allowed us to show that the main problem of the organization is the lack of a risk management model. This review was complemented with other sustainability standards that emphasized the need for an analysis of materiality, and that converged on the importance of measuring the company’s economic, social and environmental impacts over its different interest groups. Likewise, from the literature review, it was possible to demonstrate and conclude that risk management is a vital element to achieve long-term sustainability, which is linked to the concepts of corporate social responsibility and shared value creation. The proposed solution is to implement a risk management model based on a standard and global acceptance guide: ISO 31000: 2018. Through this standard, the reference framework and the process will be established, and a group of principles will be adopted, which will function as key success factors for the model to be self-sustaining and to be part of the organizational culture. This implementation proposal recommends the creation of an autonomous entity, which will be responsible for leading a proactive and preventive risk management, which will enrich the process of preparing future sustainability reports, improving accountability to its various stakeholders.

Abstract:

Optical lucky imaging polarimetry of HL Tau and XZ Tau in the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud was carried out with the instrument PolCor at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT). The results show that in both the V- and R-band HL Tau show centrosymmetric structures of the polarization angle in its northeastern outflow lobe (degree of polarization ~30%). A C-shaped structure is detected which is also present at near-IR wavelengths (Murakawa, 2008), and higher resolution optical images (Stapelfeldt, 1995). The position angle of the outflow is 47.5+-7.5 degrees, which coincides with previous measurements and the core polarization is observed to decrease with wavelength and a few scenarios are reviewed. Measuring the outflow witdh versus distance and wavelength shows that the longer wavelengths scatter deeper within the cavity wall of the outflow. In XZ Tau the binary is partially resolved, it is indicated by an elongated intensity distribution. The polarization of the parental cloud is detected in XZ Tau through the dichroic extinction of starlight. Lucky imaging at the NOT is a great way of increasing the resolution, shifting increases the sharpness by 0.1 asec and selection the sharpest frames can increase the seeing with 0.4 asec, perhaps more during better conditions.

Abstract:
In June 2005, the Sismomar survey explored the seismic structure of the slow-spreading Lucky Strike segment on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This thesis presents results from a segment scale reflection study of seismic layer 2A, a segment scale refraction study of whole crustal velocity structure, and a high resolution refraction study of the upper crust beneath and immediately surrounding the Lucky Strike seamount. The combination of the three seismic studies provides insights into the tectonic, magmatic and hydrothermal processes shaping the crustal structure of the segment. In the upper crust, the three-dimensional velocity model derived from travel time tomography shows a low velocity anomaly running parallel to the ridge axis, which is limited laterally by the median valley bounding faults. Velocities are lowest beneath recent volcanic edifices like the Lucky Strike volcano. The reflection and refraction measurements indicate an abrupt o -axis thinning of seismic layer 2A at the bounding faults. Furthermore, the seismic measurements show a low velocity anomaly that underlies the axial melt lens reflector below the Lucky Strike volcano. The low velocity zone can be explained by the presence of elevated temperatures and possibly a small amount of melt. The segment-center magma chamber, as well as thicker crust at the segment center, are consistent with a focused melt supply to the segment center

Abstract:
The Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at a depth of 1700m. Mussels (Bathymodiolus azoricus) dominate the megafauna and form large assemblages in low temperature flow areas. Lucky Strike’s microbial mats appeared as white attached filaments covering a large part of the mussel assemblages and fluid exposed hydrothermal deposits. Light microscopy observations revealed a wide diversity of morphologies both in shape and size among microbial populations. To better understand microbial mats function in the ecosystem and their possible relationships with other biological communities, their diversity and metabolically active populations were investigated through molecular and cultural approaches. Archaeal diversity appeared to be limited to the Thaumarchaeota but bacterial diversity was considerably higher, even if the Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes phyla were dominant. DNA and RNA functional gene libraries analyses also revealed the diversity and activity of chemolithoautotrophic populations. Both PCR and RT-PCR, using new Bathymodiolus sp. Symbionts 16S rRNA specific gene primers, revealed sequences affiliated to both methanotrophic and thiotrophic mussel endosymbionts, suggesting that living symbionts are present in the mats samples. Cultural approaches didn’t allow us to isolate new species, but we performed a long time enrichment culture under controlled conditions during the Bathyluck (2009) cruise. The molecular survey of this culture, designed for sulfo-oxidizers, revealed organotrophic and lithotrophic communities that were not retrieved by the molecular characterization of environmental mat samples

Agarwal, Shweta. "Beyond lucky : measuring and modelling the impact of 'probability control' on risky choice." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2014. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1021/.

Full text
Abstract:
Managers frequently deal with risk by considering uncertainty as an element of the decision problem over which they can exert control — for example, lobbyists trying to exert influence over regulators or managers trying to mitigate Operational Risks related to human processes. This perspective that the probabilities of uncertain events are at times ‘mutable’ — i.e. subject to one’s influence — has an important and previously under-appreciated role in decision-making under risk. The present research, structured as a series of three papers, addresses this gap between theory and practice on the topic of ‘control’ from a descriptive, theoretical and prescriptive perspective. The descriptive paper discusses a novel empirical test of the behavioural effect of ‘control’ on risk taking. The key finding that control does not always enhance risk taking but, instead, has a moderating effect on attitudes to risk, extends insights from related research. Strong preference for exerting control to eliminate uncertainty is also revealed. Affective and cognitive interpretations of the findings are offered and their correspondence with managerial attitudes to risk taking is discussed. The theoretical paper builds on methods in Decision Analysis and Philosophy, and develops a new probability revision rule for modelling control as interventions on uncertainties. This rule is shown to dramatically alleviate the judgmental burden of analysing multiple interventions. Foundational properties for probability revision rules for interventions, similar to the coherence criterion for Bayes rule, are also constructed and a proof that the proposed rule satisfies these properties is offered. In the prescriptive paper, a real world application of the probability revision rule is illustrated in the context of Operational Risk assessment, where several uncertainties are controllable (e.g. staff strikes). It is shown how this rule can be integrated with Operational Risk calculations to explicitly incorporate the effect of managerial mitigations on loss events, thus making a useful contribution to the field. In summary, this research explores the concept of ‘probability control’ as a way to manage risks in the context of Decision Sciences. It furthers our behavioural understanding of risk attitudes to better resonate with managerial perspectives on risk taking and extends the relevance of Decision Analysis methods to corporate risk management.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of two related sections. Part One is an essay addressing the representation of fact-based violence in Chronicle of a death foretold by Gabriel García Márquez and 2666 by Roberto Bolaño. Part Two, the primary section, is the novel-instories The Lucky Ones. The overall goal of this thesis is to understand how violence can be portrayed through a literary approach. In the essay, “Tragados por la Tierra: Violence in García Márquez and Bolaño,” I focus on how both authors write about fact-based violence: how their specific approach, craft, and tools, their style and language are used to depict violence through an interplay between visibility and ambiguity. Set in Colombia between 1993 and 2013—the peak years of violence during the long Colombian conflict—The Lucky Ones centers on a group of wealthy girls, the daughters of expats and local elite, and the teachers, housekeepers, warlords, and guerrilla fighters who surround them. The Lucky Ones examines and enacts many of the themes discussed in Part One, by focusing on the paradoxical nature of violence that is consistently present yet rarely witnessed.

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation analyzes two novels by the American novelist Robert Coover as examples of hypertextual writing on the book bound page, as tokens of hyperfiction. The complexity displayed in the novels, John's Wife and The Adventures of Lucky Pierre, integrates the cultural elements that characterize the contemporary condition of capitalism and technologized practices that have fostered a different subjectivity evidenced in hypertextual writing and reading, the posthuman subjectivity. The models that account for the complexity of each novel are drawn from the concept of strange attractors in Chaos Theory and from the concept of rhizome in Nomadology. The transformations the characters undergo in the degree of their corporeality sets the plane on which to discuss turbulence and posthumanity. The notions of dynamic patterns and strange attractors, along with the concept of the Body without Organs and Rhizome are interpreted, leading to the revision of narratology and to analytical categories appropriate to the study of the novels. The reading exercised throughout this dissertation enacts Daniel Punday's corporeal reading. The changes in the characters' degree of materiality are associated with the stages of order, turbulence and chaos in the story, bearing on the constitution of subjectivity within and along the reading process. Coover's inscription of planes of consistency to counter linearity and accommodate hypertextual features to the paper supported narratives describes the characters' trajectory as rhizomatic. The study led to the conclusion that narrative today stands more as a regime in a rhizomatic relation with other regimes in cultural practice than as an exclusively literary form and genre. Besides this, posthuman subjectivity emerges as class identity, holding hypertextual novels as their literary form of choice.

Abstract:
Modeling the thermal state of the oceanic crust is an important task to understand the construction of oceanic crust which covers two thirds of the surface of our planet. The interplays among magma delivery to the axis and cooling of the oceanic lithosphere as a function of both space and time are key factors to understand the creation of the oceanic crust, which is primarily determined by the overall thermal structure of mid-ocean ridges. Classical thermal models do not predict steady state axial magma chambers (AMCs) along mid-ocean ridges at spreading rates less than 30 mm/year. The identification and seismic imaging of an axial magma chamber underlying the Lucky Strike central volcano and hydrothermal field at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge provides a unique opportunity to study the thermal structure of slow spreading ridges. Here we present coupled microseismic data and thermal modeling to provide insight on the nature of ephemeral magma chambers at slow-spreading ridges, to constrain the timescales associated with changes in melt supply and the parameters that can create them, and to shed light on the different mechanisms that can result on the cooling and disappearance of these structures. Both the coupled microseismic and thermal modeling results, and the time-constraints derived from the geological constraints put forward, suggest that focused melt supply to the segment center is required regularly, and that this supply is maintained over extended periods of time, that can lead to a durable magma chamber. This thesis, while focusing on the processes occurring at the Lucky Strike, provide a more general template to both understand and study other slow-spreading ridge segments, and to gain insight on how the oceanic crust is formed along them

Abstract:
We carried out a three year (2013-2015) observational campaign at the Danish 1.54-m Telescope at the ESO observatory at La Silla in Chile in which we obtained ~1000 astronomical images in the field of 11 Galactic globular clusters. The selection of these stellar systems was focused mainly on the visibility of the targets and their relevant physical properties available in the catalogues, among them were considered the density, variable stars known, colour-magnitude diagrams, and luminosity. The telescope was equipped with an electron-multiplying CCD (EMCCD) with the aim of taking very short exposure-time images. The camera was configured to take 10 frames per second. Due to this, the brighter stars observed were not affected by saturation, it helped to give higher signal to noise ratio to the fainter stars and, importantly, it minimised the effects of the atmospheric turbulence such as blending between stars in the crowded fields. To produce normal-exposure-time images (minutes) we implemented the shift-and-add technique that also enabled us to produce images with better angular resolution than previously achieved with conventional CCDs on ground-based telescopes, and even enabled us to produce images with angular resolution close to that obtained with space telescopes. The detection of the stars in each of the globular clusters and the photometry was performed via difference image analysis by using the DanDIA pipeline whose procedures and mathematical techniques have been demonstrated to produce high-precision time-series photometry of very crowded stellar regions. We produced time-series photometry for ~15000 stars in the fields observed which were statistically analysed in order to automatically extract variable stars. Our aim is to complete, or improve, the census of the variable star population in the globular clusters. In NGC 6715, we found light curves for 17 previously known variable stars near the edges of our reference image (16 RR Lyrae and 1 semi-regular) and we discovered 67 new variables (30 RR Lyrae, 21 long-period irregular, 3 semi-regular, 1 W Virginis, 1 eclipsing binary, and 11 unclassified). This cluster was particularly interesting because apart from the results obtained, it shows the benefits of using the EMCCD cameras and the shift-and-add technique. It is a cluster studied several times including data obtained with the OGLE survey and also with the Hubble Space Telescope and our discoveries were still new. Our new RR Lyrae star discoveries help confirm that NGC 6715 is of intermediate Oosterhoff type. In the other 10 globular clusters, we obtained light curves for 31 previously known variable stars (3 L, 2 SR, 20 RR Lyrae, 1 SX Phe, 3 cataclysmic variables, 1 EW and 1 NC) and we discovered 30 new variables (16 L, 7 SR, 4 RR Lyrae, 1 SX Phe and 2 NC). In NGC 6093, we analysed the famous case of the 1860 Nova, for which no observations of the Nova in outburst have been made until the present study. Ephemerides and photometric measurements for the variable stars are available in electronic form through the Strasbourg Astronomical Data Centre.

Abstract:

Matthews, Kirsten Alexandra. "'Lucky Poet' and the bounds of possibility : autobiography and referentiality in Hugh MacDiarmid's 'Poetic World'." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2009. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/859/.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the use of collage as a form of autobiography in Hugh MacDiarmid’s Lucky Poet (1943). It traces the development of the use of autobiographical detail and the use of collage in MacDiarmid’s work from To Circumjack Cencrastus (1930) to Lucky Poet. It aims to show that though there is a clear precedent for both these elements in the earliest of MacDiarmid’s work, To Circumjack Cencrastus represented a turning point in MacDiarmid’s progression towards the use of collage as an autobiographical form, and the subsequent development of his interest in autobiography can be traced through the Clann Albann project (1931-1933) and Stony Limits and Other Poems (1934) to Lucky Poet. It examines the difference between autobiographical memory, as developed in the Clann Albann poems, and the representation of immediate experience in poems written while MacDiarmid was on Whalsay, particularly those included in Stony Limits and Other Poems (1934). Its analysis of Lucky Poet, and of the earlier works, focuses on the ideological and artistic use to which MacDiarmid puts autobiography. It includes a brief account of the place of Lucky Poet within recent critical debate regarding the autobiographical genre, but centres on a detailed analysis of MacDiarmid’s reference to Søren Kierkegaard and Lev Shestov. It shows how he developed, through reference to Shestov’s In Job’s Balances and Walter Lowrie’s biography of Kierkegaard, a concept of the suffering and self-sacrifice of the artist, and a related belief in the need to embrace – as an artist – both the danger and the freedom of Shestov’s abyss. It demonstrates how this freedom is realized in the rejection of social conventions and in the publication of unpalatable or provocative material. The thesis concludes by comparing MacDiarmid’s autobiographical writing to that of Edwin Muir and Sir Thomas Urquhart, arguing that Muir rejects the notions of self-sacrifice and rebellion developed by MacDiarmid while Urquhart, despite his distance from MacDiarmid in historical period and social class, ultimately stood for the same principles.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine teachers' approach to popular culture in preschool. The questions we want answered are: What approach do educators have to popular culture in preschool and what underlies that approach? Is there a high - and low culture in preschool? If educators bring popular culture into the preschool, how then is it used? Do children’s culture influence everyday life in preschool?  We have employed qualitative methods to seek answers to our questions. We conducted seven interviews with educators from four different preschools. The starting point for our study was the socio-cultural perspective because we examined people's cultures and how the meeting between them unfolds.  We concluded that educators have a very ambivalent attitude towards popular culture in preschool. Respondents could see popular culture as positive for children's learning, because it makes learning meaningful and enjoyable for the children. But at the same time, they had difficulty relating to popular culture because of its commercialism, the strongly gender-coded roles that frequently occur and the status created around owning the products. We also observed a strong high culture that contrast with popular culture in preschool. High culture was linked to educators' own experiences and values, and to how instructive and useful cultural phenomenon were for the children. Popular culture needs to be connected with a clear learning objective for teachers to consider taking it into the preschool. During the investigation we discovered that teachers enjoy great power over what is brought into the preschool and over what is held out of children's reach. Children's influence over their own culture is limited in preschool. The most prominent aspect of the study was educators' own ambivalence towards popular culture.

Abstract:
Thesis (MDram)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: HIV/AIDS has escalated into a global health pandemic. Africa has emerged as the most severely affected continent with more than half of the world’s HIV infected population residing in Sub-Saharan Africa. Consequently various awareness campaigns have been launched in attempts to stifle the rapid spread of the pandemic. Much emphasis has been placed on communication as effective strategy specifically when it has a participatory and community-based approach which offers education through alternative ways of responding to HIV/AIDS in order to reach and involve the individual target audience. The value of entertainment as an effective intervention tool through which to inform and educate is of major importance. Theatre is widely implemented as a tool when attempting problem solving and group and/or individual behaviour-change. Lucky, the Hero! an HIV/AIDS Educational Theatre intervention initiative was launched by The Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management after research established that alarmingly low levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge existed amongst the predominantly Afrikaans speaking farm workers communities of the Western Cape region as media campaigns had not successfully reached them due to geographical isolation and illiteracy. Theoretical guidelines for the development process and implementation of Lucky, the Hero! are provided: how it came about; its content and messages; and the intricacies of how the show was rolled out to audiences. The specific results and findings of such an Educational Theatre intervention campaign in the Breede River Valley during September 2007 are discussed, as well as how successful the practical implementation of the intervention has been in terms of its theoretical base and initial purpose. Lucky, the Hero! was found to be overall successful in achieving its aims and proved to be entertaining and educational. It improved general knowledge of HIV infection amongst participants and motivated intentions towards positive behaviour change. Over 2000 participants were also tested during the 14-day intervention. Theatre as intervention tool proved to be effective in this specific instance as most participants agreed that educational theatre was an appropriate method to positively influence HIV/AIDS related behaviour in the community. They also expressed the wish to see the performance again and said they would encourage others to see it. Although the evaluation methods served their purpose in proving that theatre was an effective tool in HIV/AIDS education and provided basic information and results about HIV/AIDS and the intervention strategy method and campaign, a multi-integrated approach needs to be considered. The latter should include follow up interventions focusing on ongoing HIV/AIDS education and training in order to achieve feasible and sustainable long term results.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I investigate the nature, space-time variability, distribution and associated heat flux of hydrothermal activity at the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 37°17'N). As part of the MoMAR experiment to monitor hydrothermal activity, we used an ROV to acquired photomosaics of the seafloor and to deploy temperature sensors at black smoker, cracks, and diffuse hydrothermal outflows. Seafloor imagery provides detailed and accurate constrain on the distribution, geometry, and nature of hydrothermal outflow. Repeated surveys allow us to evaluate the temporal variability of these systems. Temperature records show two main temporal patterns: (1) episodic variability with rapid temperature changes, and (2) systematic variability at tidal periods. Cross-spectral methods applied to the temperature and bottom pressure records reveal robust phase relationships, particularly for the high-temperature records, as predicted by poroelastic theory. These results demonstrate the tidal pressures diffusely propagate through the porous matrix hosting sub-surface flow, which results in phase lags between the surface pressure and the fluid discharge temperature. We use th,is observation to constrain hydrologie parameters of the sub-surface circulation system at the Lucky Strike field. Finally, I also investigated in the laboratory the nature of flow associated with a heat source comparable to a crack. Temperature gradients between the heat source and the ambient seawater modulate the frequency and ascent velocity of thermals forming above the cracks, a dependency that may be applied in the future to calculate heat fluxes from video imagery acquired in the field

Abstract:
In nearly forty years of research, significant insights have been gained on vent field geology, on the chemistry of emitted fluid and on the ecology of the communities inhabiting hydrothermal ecosystems. The fauna forms dense assemblages, distributed along the hydrothermal fluid/sea water mixing gradient, and visually dominated only by a few species. The high spatio-temporal variability of the hydrothermal fluid has a strong influence on species distribution. However, the mechanisms determining the species response to this variability is still poorly understood. In order to investigate this issue, a modelling approach is presented. Data collected for more than 20 years on the Eiffel Tower edifice, on the Lucky Strike vent filed (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) were integrated in order to identify meaningful elements for our problem. An integrative study of the faunal biomasses on the edifice showed that these are dominated by the mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus. This bivalve is likely to have a significant influence on the ecosystem functioning and is thus the object of a first model. The search for data to constrain it led to the measurement of in situ metabolic rates. Once parametrized, the model provided quantitative estimates of unknown fluxes. The simulation of hydrothermal flow interruption provided some insights on the mussel biomass response to its environment variability
