Abstract:
O capítulo 4 contém as principais conclusões.
Some say trading is just like gambling in a casino: there can be certain techniques, but the most important factor is luck. I have come across more than a handful of people stating similar assertions. How can there be portfolio managers such as Blackrock or J. P. Morgan with such reputation and so many clients? How is it that they reach better results than other managers do, consistently over time? This report does not provide a direct answer to the above question. However, it compiles the knowledge acquired over a three-month internship at Mercer related to performance measurement and its use to analyze the sources of excess return relative to a benchmark. The following dissertation has been written with the belief that a consistent positive excess return over time is an indicator of manager skill (Christopherson et. al., 1998). In practical terms, daily calculations of performance and risk measures provided a deeper understanding on the financial theory and the actual methods used in a professional environment. In this document, Chapter 1 introduces the basics about the internship and its purpose. Chapter 2 presents a description of the tasks undertaken at Mercer and the financial theory behind them. Chapter 3 contains a practical case of attribution analysis. Chapter 4 holds the main conclusions.

Abstract:
Elements of randomness are a common factor inmodern digital games, from simple rolls of a die tocomplex AI systems. These elements have an impacton how the player experiences a game. We believe thatexploring the field of luck analysis can benefit designersthrough an developed understanding of how such elementsaffect players. The developers of the digital card gameSlay the Spire has released 77 millions of instances ofplay and sample of these are explored in this study. Withthe use of data mining, data clustering and correlationanalysis the effect of elements of randomness present inSlay the Spire are analyzed. In conclusion, three playerskill groups were identified with the use of clustering:Winners, Low skill losers and High skill losers. Weobserved that people who succeeded in beating the game, had an increased amount of randomness in the formof cards by a factor of 1.82. Showing that more skilledplayers do not shy away from randomness but insteadembrace it more than lower skilled players.

Church, Ian M. "Virtue epistemology and the analysis of knowledge." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3118.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis centers on two trends in epistemology: (i) the dissatisfaction with the reductive analysis of knowledge, the project of explicating knowledge in terms of necessary and jointly sufficient conditions, and (ii) the popularity of virtue-theoretic epistemologies. The goal of this thesis is to endorse non-reductive virtue epistemology. Given that prominent renditions of virtue epistemology assume the reductive model, however, such a move is not straightforward—work needs to be done to elucidate what is wrong with the reductive model, in general, and why reductive accounts of virtue epistemology, specifically, are lacking. The first part of this thesis involves diagnosing what is wrong with the reductive model and defending that diagnosis against objections. The problem with the reductive project is the Gettier Problem. In Chapter 1, I lend credence to Linda Zagzebski's grim 1994 diagnosis of Gettier problems (and the abandonment of the reductive model) by examining the nature of luck, the key component of Gettier problems. In Chapter 2, I vindicate this diagnosis against a range of critiques from the contemporary literature. The second part involves applying this diagnosis to prominent versions of (reductive) virtue epistemology. In Chapter 3, we consider the virtue epistemology of Alvin Plantinga. In Chapter 4, we consider the virtue epistemology of Ernest Sosa. Both are seminal and iconic; nevertheless, I argue that, in accord with our diagnosis, neither is able to viably surmount the Gettier Problem. Having diagnosed what is wrong with the reductive project and applied this diagnosis to prominent versions of (reductive) virtue epistemology, the final part of this thesis explores the possibility of non-reductive virtue epistemology. In Chapter 5, I argue that there are three strategies that can be used to develop non-reductive virtue epistemologies, strategies that are compatible with seminal non-reductive accounts of knowledge and preserve our favorite virtue-theoretic concepts.

Abstract:
This analysis of Tan's first two novels reveals that her female characters suffer from the strains critics like Amy Ling say result from the double paradox of filling the roles of mother or daughter as minority women in a white, male society. Recognizing this double paradox offers Tan's characters, and her readers, the opportunity to resolve the conflicts between mothers and daughters in The Joy Luck Club. Using the theories of psychologist Kathie Carlson helps readers understand how the protagonist of The Kitchen God's Wife resolves similar conflicts with her daughter and her own mother by seeking support from a mythic mother-figure, a Goddess of her own making.

Abstract:
Diploma thesis tests the existence of luck premium on U.S. CEOs' compensations. Luck premium means that in case of high principal-agent costs, CEOs are rewarded for random luck and not only for their productivity. Thesis uses financial crisis in 2008 as a breaking event after which attention and control of CEOs' remuneration by owners, public, and media intensified. Using regression with fixed effects on panel data between years 2004 and 2012 thesis proved impact of luck premium before 2008 while the influence was not significant after 2008. Results were not robust for other model specifications, which might be caused by selectivity of the dataset. Thesis then presents overview of theoretical approaches to CEOs' compensation analysis and recommendations for optimal compensation set-up.

Kelp, Christoph F. F. "A minimalist approach to epistemology." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/242.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of the analysis of knowledge. The persistent failure of analyses of knowledge in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions is used to motivate exploring alternative approaches to the analytical problem. In parallel to a similar development in the theory of truth, in which the persistent failure to provide a satisfactory answer to the question as to what the nature of truth is has led to the exploration of deflationary and minimalist approaches to the theory of truth, the prospects for deflationary and minimalist approaches to the theory of knowledge are investigated. While it is argued that deflationary approaches are ultimately unsatisfactory, a minimalist approach to epistemology, which characterises the concept of knowledge by a set of platitudes about knowledge, is defended. The first version of a minimalist framework for the theory of knowledge is developed. Two more substantive developments of the minimalist framework are discussed. In the first development a safety condition on knowledge is derived from the minimalist framework. Problems for this development are discussed and solved. In the second development, an ability condition is derived from the minimalist framework. Reason is provided to believe that, arguably, the ability condition can avoid the problems that beset traditional analyses of knowledge. It is also shown that even if this argument fails, minimalist approaches to epistemology may serve to provide a functional definition of knowledge. Reason is thus provided to believe that minimalist approaches to epistemology can make progress towards addressing the problem of the analysis of knowledge.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis takes as its object of study the whole of Gherasim Luca's literary output. Each stage of his Iiterary career is examined with regard to its specific context, from his poetic beginnings in 1930, as young recruit of avant-garde circIes in Bucharest, through the following period when Luca questioned the possibiIity of a "proletarian" literature and the surrealist experience itself, to his last published "ontophoniques" poems. My contribution is continuous with previous work on the work and life of Luca but it both enriches and modifies significantly earlier scholarship in the areas of biography, bibliography, and textual analysis. The fundamental, guiding, methdological principles of my study are: 1) to historicize Luca's literary works written in French and Romanian (i. E. , to examine the dynamic of his texts in their historical context and chronology); 2) to make systematic use of unpublished documents (especially those located in the "Gherasim Luca Archive" in the "Bibliothèque Jacques Doucet" in Paris) ; 3) to carry out a careful and close analysis of Luca's Romanian texts. My contribution is original in that it makes Luca's work accessible to readers who do not know Romanian. I also place particular emphasis on elucidating the genesis of the poet's writings. This is necessary because this dimension has been neglected in the work of previous critics

Abstract:
This analysis of Jean-Luc Godard’s film “Pierrot le Fou” makes use of linguistic, semiotic and psycho-analytic tools. This approach avoids external references: it is the object itself which has determined the structure and organization of my work. A film takesform and remains only in one’s memory, and this fact creates serious misinterpretations. A rigourous descriptive treatment is therefore called for. Book One is a review of the discourses which cut across one another in “Pierrot le Fou”. The combination of heterogeneous elements (images, sound, words, texts) is studied by focusing on the construction of the narrative. Book Two attempts to grasp the creative movement in Godard’s work which wavers between desire and refusal, and between death wish and despair with life. On the one hand, he employs a strategy aimed at demolishing the existent discourses; on the other hand, he wants to bring into unexpected confrontation bits of life torn away from reality, and to make of them poetry. In “Pierrot le Fou” every detail is justified by its relation to other details and to the whole. The continual reference to poetry (Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Céline and to painting reveals the profound utopianism of Godard: this means renewing meaning in order to communicate at last. His demand is such that in order to bring Beauty into evidence, the film at any given moments seems to threaten to destroy meaning altogether. The appendices include the screenplay, as well as a diagram of the entire film: the technical details are show in their relation to the unfolding of the film. “Blockaus USA”, a short film by Le Hémonet, is treated in the same manner. This short which lasts 14 minutes is both in recognition of “Pierrot le Fou” and its pastiche; its inclusion makes it possible to introduce, in Chapter 3 of Book Two, a counterpoint in the analysis

Abstract:
Abstract: This study investigates the conservation status, previous intervention, executive techniques and pigment materials of the painting “SPOSALIZIO DI S. CATERINA”, attributed to Adriaen Isenbrant back to 16th century. The analysis was carried out based on the combination of scientific examination and restoration exploration. The scientific examination includes both in-situ non-invasive techniques and laboratory micro-destructive techniques. Non-invasive examination consists of the application of ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF), infrared reflectography (IRR), infrared false color (IRFC) and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF), whereas micro-destructive analysis comprises optical microscope (OM). The obtained results revealed that the painting was in a relatively good condition with several times of previous restoration, it was painted with typical Flemish painting techniques and materials in 16th century: a panel made of chestnut wood, a preparation layer composed of lead white colored in pale grey and brownish-orange, few of underdrawings and some pentimenti, with the palette composed of cinnabar and red ochre for red, verdigris or malachite for green, azurite for blue and yellow ocher for yellow. Moreover, this study provides an evidence that restoration, in particular during the cleaning of the painted surface and panel restoration process, is also acting as a very useful tool for painting investigation, being complementary with scientific examination, therefore it is of necessity to correctly and timely gather the information during the restoration process.

ARIOLI, ANTONELLA.

Full text
Abstract:
The research suggests a pedagogic reading about adolescents’ existential disease: a phenomenon which assumes more and more alarming appearances in our society. Referring to usual interpretative psychiatric, psychological and sociological models, we express the hypothesis that the frustration of the inalienable human motivation of giving sense to life could be the common matrix of the various forms of youth disease: bullying, unconcern, disorientation, apathy, aggressiveness and addiction. This existential dissatisfaction involves education and the pedagogic way to give an answer to uneasiness through educability and potential resources of the growing subjects, beyond pathological elements and needs to be fulfilled. So, considering Viktor E. Frankl Existential Analysis, which is the theoretic background of this research, the borders of the existential dimension of the adolescents' discomfort reveal themselves, together with the foundation of a pedagogic anthropology able to legitimate the human being’s needs of meaning. The research ends with a proposal of some methodological features, useful to explain the general aim of the “conscience refinement”, heart of genuine search of meaning oriented education.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis, the South African legal system's attempt to address sexual violence is explored through the lens of the work of the French feminist philosopher, Luce Irigaray. It will be argued that the South African equality jurisprudence lays the foundation for a strongly Irigarayan approach to the transformation of sex and gender relations in so far as our right to equality can be interpreted as being underpinned by an acknowledgment of embodiment, sexual particularity and difference. Our Constitution envisions equality as a value informed by difference rather than sameness and, in accordance with Irigaray’s work, it can be said that the implication of this is that the pursuit of the transformation of sex and gender relations on the one hand, and an acknowledgment of sexual difference on the other, are not mutually exclusive, but that sex equality instead calls for a fundamental recognition of sexual difference and an authentic response to the demands thereof. However, it will be argued that our newly reformed sexual violence legislation undermines the progress made on a constitutional level by entrenching a problematic approach to sexual difference in the definition of the crime of rape. This is done through firstly, defining the crime of rape in gender-neutral terms and secondly, retaining the concept of consent as the distinguishing characteristic between sex and rape. I will argue that through these features, our sexual violence legislation reflects the most basic mistakes that Irigaray identifies with the law. It will be argued that the legislation, on the one hand, denies sexual difference in a way that is prejudicial to women through its gender-neutral language, while at the same time, through the concept of consent, (re-)introducing a hierarchical construction of masculine and feminine sexuality into the Act in terms of which femininity is construed as derivative of, and inferior to, masculinity. Furthermore, the combination of the gender neutrality of the definition and the concept of consent exacerbates the situation, in so far as the gender neutrality masks the harmful construal of sexual difference that is incorporated in the definition through the concept of consent. Accordingly, judged from an Irigarayan perspective, the South African sexual violence legislation is deeply problematic. In addition, the legislation undercuts important constitutional developments, in so far as it ignores the constitutional insights that, firstly, sexual violence is a problem of sex inequality, and that secondly, the pursuit of the transformation of sex and gender relations is served, rather than undercut by a concern with particularities. On this basis, it is argued that the South African sexual violence legislation should be amended so that the concept of consent is removed and the crime of rape is defined in sex-specific language (while still allowing for male victims and female perpetrators) that facilitates judicial understanding of the complexities of the crime of rape.

Muller, Marié-Luce. "The development of competitive intelligence (CI) in South Africa with special reference to the CI practices in a pharmaceutical company / Marié-Luce Muller." Thesis, North-West University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/220.

Full text
Abstract:
Competitive intelligence (CI) is one of the fastest growing fields in the business world South Africa included; yet little quantitative research has been conducted or published on the development and use of CI in South Africa. CI is concerned with the methods companies use to monitor their competitors, their own competitive position, and to improve their competitiveness. It is not a new business activity but modern CI is more focused, formal, organised and actionable. CI is not an activity limited to a few countries or companies in certain industries; it is a worldwide phenomenon. Most of the Fortune 500 companies use CI extensively. Literature shows some countries such as France, Japan, Sweden and the USA to be more advanced in their embracement of CI as a means to enhance competitiveness. In these countries, CI is a recognised business discipline and has become a major source to achieve competitive advantage. They are also developed in terms of the role government plays in supporting CI activities. Another indicator of CI as a growing practice worldwide is the development of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP). Globally, SCIP chapters have taken root in all continents. Moreover, SCIP Europe, SCIP Italia, SCIP Australia and SClP Deutschland are part of a growing worldwide network of SCIP affiliates, i.e. independent organisations that have formally affiliated with SCIP. Leaders in the field of CI training are France, Japan, Israel, Sweden, and Korea while Europe is beginning to appreciate the importance of CI as a corporate tool. Some practitioners suggest that in the near future, all MBA programmes in Europe will include CI as a core subject and that the investment community will be looking at companies' track records in terms of their CI practices (Blagg, 2002). In comparison, CI in South Africa is still in its infancy (Muller, 1999). However, with South Africa's competitive landscape being reshaped, the need for CI as a means to enhance competitiveness has grown rapidly. Research into CI in South Africa has been limited. The first comprehensive research projects were launched in the beginning of the century. Very few companies then knew about CI, let alone practice it. But that did not mean that companies did not monitor competitors and other external events. There was just no formalised structured approach in assessing their environment. Since then, a team of researchers came together to find an answer to the question: What is the level of development and deployment of CI in South Africa? The findings of the research indicated a realisation among South African companies that they will have to take pro-active steps based on available information in order to survive. An assessment of current programmes in CI at South African learning institutions revealed a lack of formal academic programmes. Current programmes are mainly limited to short courses in basic CI principles. At present there are no CI courses presented at secondary schools in South Africa, and although some progress has been made in the development of courses, much still needs to be done. Programmes should also be presented at business schools at MBA level or at least as part of management and leadership training. A detailed description of the development of CI in South Africa in the areas of research, consulting and training is provided in Chapter 2. To illustrate the CI practice in a company, a case study is discussed in Chapter 3 to examine and analyse the development of the CI capability in one of the most prominent pharmaceutical companies. The pharmaceutical industry provides an appropriate example of an industry that undergoes constant and rapid change. Various areas of CI still need to be researched including CI in the academy as well as further studies on how companies in South Africa conduct CI. This study aims to add to the growing database of research into CI in South Africa. For the first research article (chapter 2) two research methods were used i.e. a literature study irto CI as a business discipline and a qualitative design (interviews) to obtain information from leaders in CI in South Africa. Given that CI is still in its infancy, the sample was small and included all recognised knowledgeable people on Clin South Africa. For the second research article (chapter 3) the same two research methods were applied. Both a qualitative design (interviews) and a questionnaire were used for the collection of primary information on the targeted company. The interviews were conducted with the CI manager in the company that was targeted for the case study. The sensitive nature of CI meant that permission for the publication of the case study had to be obtained provided a disguised name was used.

Abstract:

Becker, Bonnie. "A feminist analysis of Lyman Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables and Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden." Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/1290.

Abstract:
The primary aim of this project is to provide a close contextual and textual analysis of the selected children’s classics: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Anne of Green Gables and The Secret Garden using the feminist literary theory. From this perspective I have shown how the selected works of Lyman Frank Baum, Lucy Maud Montgomery and Frances Hodgson Burnett’s writing have contributed to women’s stereotypical roles within society and perpetuated their subjugated position. I have also conducted an examination of the extent to which the female protagonists attempt to emancipate themselves from gender oppression. A comparative study of the selected children’s texts has not yet been conducted and therefore this project serves as a significant contribution to this field of study. An exploration of the historical background of the authors and children’s literature is conducted to provide an overview into the inner workings of the writers’ lives and the historical significance of children’s literature as a genre. The theoretical framework of feminist literary theory is used in the analysis of the selected texts. The connection between feminist literary theory and children’s literature is highlighted and provides further understanding of the purpose of this study. The history of feminism as both a movement and a contemporary literary criticism is explored. Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex is used when analysing the texts’ characters and how they are based on society’s stereotypical gender roles. Luce Irigaray’s Speculum of the Other Woman and This Sex Which is Not One is examined to aid in an exploration of psychological female oppression through feminine and masculine discourse evident in the creation of the novels’ female and male characters. Hélène Cixous’ “The Laugh of the Medusa” and The Newly Born Woman is interrogated according to the stereotypical ideology surrounding the terms masculinity and femininity and how these terms are interpreted in the selected works. Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble and Undoing Gender are additionally explored to assist in the understanding of the concept of gender performativity and through the lens of Butler’s interpolation of gender the move towards the emancipation of women is seen in the selected children’s texts. The close textual feminist analysis focuses on the female protagonists: Dorothy, Anne and Mary as well as the secondary female characters: the wicked witches, Aunt Em, the Queen of the Field-Mice, the princess made from china, Glinda’s female soldiers from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; Marilla Cuthbert, Rachel Lynde and Diana Barry from Anne of Green Gables and Martha, Mrs Sowerby and Mrs Craven from The Secret Garden. The portrayal of the secondary male characters are additionally explored according to feminist literary theory: The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Lion and the wizard Oz from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; Matthew Cuthbert and Gilbert Blythe from Anne of the Green Gables’ and Mr Craven, Colin Craven and Dickon Sowerby from The Secret Garden. The comparison of these children’s classics by Baum, Montgomery and Burnett provides insight into the selected works of all three writers, through the lens offered by feminist literary theory. Through the interrogation of these representative female protagonists found in early children’s literature, an understanding of not only the subordination of women, as evident in literature during this era, is illustrated but also the comprehension that women’s liberation was foreshadowed in these early children’s novels.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to understand how Luc Ferrari builds the heterogeneity of his music. The composer conceives creation as a space in which, according to his words, ideas that do not “necessarily have links between them” meet each other. Pieces then become a space of cohabitation, of friction, in which other components share space with "music", in the narrow sense. The propositions “place, story and experiences” are attempts to characterize these others components that constitute the heterogeneous of Ferrari’s music. In the first part, "music and place," we see how pieces become, at times, places. Real spaces, externals, in relation to a lived experience. In this part we will analyse Hétérozygote. In the second part, "music and story", we study the importance that composer give to the narrative in his work, starting from the sons anecdotiques to the general evolution of scenarios. With the analysis of Far-West News, we measure how Luc Ferrari’s works rely as much on musicals forms as on the development of stories. Finally, with the third part, "music and experiences", we want to refer to a confluence of experiences: the anecdote of the composer resonates in the experience of the listeners, who dump their experiences into the pieces. Through the expression of his experience, Luc Ferrari calls and works with these subjective experiences of listeners, who will also share the spaces of works. To explain this idea, we will analyse Chantal, ou le portrait d’une villageoise

Abstract:
Solos for euphonium with electronic media present the unique challenge of incorporating an active, physical involvement in the live accompaniment through sound-altering technology such as guitar pedals or digital processors. Instructions for this solo genre are often vague and demand a general knowledge of how to use non-traditional devices. Due to the lack of information available on newly-composed pieces for this medium, students and professionals easily overlook the artistic merit of electroacoustic music. This dissertation provides a comprehensive performance guide that aids in the set-up and operation of advanced technology and presents a methodical approach to performing common musical and technical challenges found in modern euphonium repertoire with electronic media. Included in this dissertation are tables of common audio vocabulary and images of connectors, safety precautions, equipment recommendations with performance settings, a list of required connectors, adapters, cables, speakers, and amplifiers, performance set up diagrams, background information, and analyses of both the technical and musical aspects of each piece. In the appendices are signal flow charts, visual illustrations of polar recording patterns, and an updated catalog of published and unpublished original, adapted, and arranged euphonium solos with live electronics and electronic media accompaniment between 1970 and 2017.

Fletcher, Joseph Daniel. "Head Chop : Acéphale and community in the works of Bataille, Blanchot, and Nancy." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31200.

Full text
Abstract:
Head Chop is a practice-led research project exploring the thinking of community found within the works of Georges Bataille, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Maurice Blanchot. Using the central exchange between Nancy and Blanchot, as found in the triple intersection of texts composed of Nancy's Inoperative Community, Blanchot's The Unavowable Community, and finally Nancy's recent The Disavowed Community, Head Chop draws upon the interfaces of these three works to develop a reading of community. Utilising the concept of fictioning, an imaging of possible worlds, as its primary methodology, Head Chop develops a narrativised analysis of community. The story of Acéphale, Bataille's secret society, provides the structuring fiction of the work. This story is developed from a synthesis of fragmentary accounts of the Acéphale group's sacrificial ambition, and the illustrations of the Acéphale journal. The result is a tale of a human sacrifice from which the being Acéphale subsequently arises. In tracing the relation of the work of Nancy and Blanchot to the work of Bataille, Head Chop draws attention to the role of the figure of Acéphale for Bataille, and its subsequent insinuation in the work of Nancy and Blanchot. The figure of Acéphale operates as an editorial device that structures and informs the readings of these works as a common grounding and central problematic. This situates the readings of Bataille, Nancy and Blanchot in a contested frame of reference by attempting to accommodate an alternate version of the sacrificial event. Head Chop finds a basis for its methodological investigation in Deleuze and Guattari's work What is Philosophy? Excising and developing a series of figures and conceptual tools from the works of Nancy, Blanchot and Bataille, Head Chop develops a crossing of these figures and concepts as characters within the broader narrative of Acéphale. Following this methodological approach, Head Chop traces series of connected concepts in the works of Nancy and Blanchot. In developing these connections in relation to the Acéphale narrative, conceptual structures engaged in the thinking of community are drawn out into the broader contexts of Nancy and Blanchot's work. These connections are traced in Nancy through addressing such notions as the deconstruction of the subject, the question of authenticity in Heidegger, a re-reading of Heideggeran ontology that privileges Mitsein, and the singular plural. In Blanchot conceptual connections are similarly traced, beginning from the foundational role of the other, the challenging passion of lovers, through to death, unworking, and the question of testimony. In developing a narrativised analysis of the figure of Acéphale, Head Chop aims to open new channels of inquiry into the concept of community as it arises between the works of Bataille, Blanchot and Nancy. Research questions: How does a re-imaging of the Acéphale story, in which Acéphale is begotten, engage with Bataille, Nancy and Blanchot's readings of community? What is to be gained from the use of a re-imagined Acéphale story in a thinking of community?

Abstract:
The last French presidential elections clearly show the salience of populism in France, while 40% of the population offers its support to the two parties of this allegiance. However, populism in France, seen through speeches, remains an under-studied field. Therefore, this dissertation will analyze how populist discourses vary depending on political orientation. More precisely, it explores, in a comparative manner, the discourse of two French populist politicians: Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon. 38 non-institutional discourses and 53 institutional discourses will be studied with the help of the theoretical framework of Raoul Girardet. The latter highlights the presence of four populist myths in the speeches of French politicians: the myth of the conspiracy, the myth of the golden age, the myth of the savior, and the myth of unity. Subsequently, a second comparison— this time between the two types of speeches—will also be made. Several results can be drawn from this study. It seems that Le Pen and Mélenchon do not make a completely similar use of the four myths in their speeches. While the myths of conspiracy and of unity are expressed in a similar way by both politicians, the golden age myth is only partially demonstrated. The last myth (the myth of the savior) is used comparably in both politician’s speeches for contemporary saviors, but not for those of the past. In addition, Mélenchon's speeches remain relatively stable depending on the location, while Le Pen's vary considerably more.

Abstract:
Men begreppet Guds rike, i grundtexten ἡ βασιλείατοῦΘεοῦ, betyder snarare Guds herravälde.
In this thesis I have examined how Jesus' proclamation of the kingdom of God can be understood from the Gospel of Luke. A close examination of a single gospel, and moreover not the whole gospel but only four pericopes in it, narrows the scope considerably. The value in trying to understand what Jesus is saying based on this single coherent source is that it can have a greater depth than the picture put together by any number of fragments from different sources. In Luke's Gospel Jesus mentions the word kingdom as referring to the Kingdom of God over 20 times, in a total of 18 episodes. With the method of discourse analysis, I have divided these occurrences into three categories which I call the discourse of A, B and C. Discourse A is about the kingdom of God having the highest priority, but there is no description of the kingdom. Discourse B describes the kingdom of God in some way. Discourse C mentions the kingdom of God as a promise. The four pericopes I analyze in detail, in different ways represent the discourses I have identified in the gospel as a whole. Lk 11:1-4 belong to discourse A, Lk 11:14-23 and Lk 17:20-21 to discourse B, and Lk 22:24-30 to discourse C. The tradition that the author of the double work of Luke-Acts is precisely Luke, goes back to the mid 100's. The work is characterized by universalism and a certain vision of wealth and poverty that probably came from the author's congregation in Antioch. There the gospel to non-Jews was preached, and there was commitment in the poor and needy. It was important not to get caught up in the worldly life and be tempted to accumulate wealth. Discipleship should be wholehearted. When Jesus speaks of the kingdom of God in the Gospel of Luke, it may sound as if it is about a territory. But the concept of the kingdom of God, in the original text ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ means rather God's dominion. It is not an area or a place, but a state that is determined by God's reign. At the same time, it is impossible to rule ”nowhere”, so there is still a territory implicit in the concept. There was a duality in the perception of the kingdom of God in Jesus' time, which meant that it was both a way of conceiving the world's current situation and an eschatological concept. Through a detailed exegetical analysis of the basic text for each pericope I have reached conclusions on the theological message of the kingdom of God in the texts. The analysis of Lk 11:1-4 shows that the Lord's Prayer contains an indirect description of God's kingdom as an ideal state. God is assumed to have the power to bring the kingdom into being, but the human will and activity also plays a role. Pericope Lk 11:14-20 shows that God's kingdom is where God is at work. It can be here and now. God works through Jesus when he frees a man from a dumb demon. But he doesn't only work through Jesus but through all who do good. In pericope Lk 17:20-21 the question of when the kingdom of God will come is asked, and Jesus responds in a way that makes the kingdom seem within reach already in the present. In Jesus' promise to the disciples of equal fellowship with him in his own kingdom in Lk 22:28-30, he equates himself with God. He promises a future of glory for those who are faithful to him. An attempt at a synthesis of the theological messages that the analyses of the four pericopes led to, is that the kingdom of God according to the Gospel of Luke seems to refer to the victory of the perfect good over evil. The concept of the kingdom remains ambiguous and mysterious. What the analyses contribute to is mainly highlighting the possible meanings of the received text, which are inevitably limited in each translation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The focus of this master’s thesis is the integration of improvisation in three of my recent pieces: Nyctophilia – minimum 11’00’’ – for string quartet and soloist improviser ; Æther – 10’’ – for a trio of undetermined instruments ; Presqu’étoile – for full orchestra. As an introduction, I present my artistic concerns, the origin of my work, and the seeming duality that places improvisation in opposition to composition. Then I draw, according to my personal influences, a brief portrait of improvisation in jazz and in art music, primarily in the second half of the 20th century. Finally, I analyze three of my pieces to show the means utilized to integrate improvisation into composition. Each piece exhibits a specific way to manage the inclusion of improvisation, these methods being the result of my reflections and research. Nyctophilia – axis as a means of information management ; Æther – conversationnality and free improvisation ; Presqu’étoile – comprovisation in relation to Æther.

Abstract:
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a multicriteria method to assess environmental impacts of goods and services. In its early stages, LCA, known as Attributional (ALCA), was used to assess environmental impacts in a status-quo situation for benchmarking, environmental communication and product development. Recent methodological developments led to Consequential LCA (CLCA), which aims to quantify direct and indirect impacts of changes, through market mechanisms, allowing for public policy assessment. The aim of this Ph.D. thesis is to develop a methodological framework to assess public policy instruments in the livestock sector by combining LCA and economic modellingThis thesis is organized into three axes: i) identification and characterization of environmental performances of dairy production technologies through ALCA; ii) adaptation of MATSIM-LUCA economic model to the needs of the thesis; iii) environmental impact assessment through CLCA of dairy quota removal and implementation of a grass premium in the European Union. This work provides i) initial development of a methodological framework for assessing public policy instruments in the livestock sector and ii) identification of several improvements needed to make the method operational for stakeholders

Verraes, Jennifer. Thesis, Paris 3, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA030160.

Full text
Abstract:
Could it be that movies did not started talking because they had something to say, but in order to make the speech speak, to overhear it, to inform the discursive imaginaries that shape our common experience ? Could it be that language is at the very heart of the art of film, as it has been at the centre of modern theoretical knowledges ? Our times have invented the means of reproducing speech technically, but we have probably not fully appreciated the importance of the anthropological revolution induced by the exceptional visibility that it provides to it. Our hypothesis is that there is a cinematographic thought of language and of its uses, an aesthetical, rhetorical and poetical knowledge that is added to speech when it is represented in films. Putting the filmed speech in the centre of the analysis of four cinematographic fables — Fritz Lang’s Fury (1936), Sidney Lumet’s Fail Safe (1963), Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salò (1975) and Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme (2010) — our work proposes four « language lessons », questioning the powers and misfortunes of speech in a world convinced that we communicate massively. What do films think when they talk ? Among other things, they meditate the social and political significance of speech acts
