O capítulo 4 contém as principais conclusões.
Some say trading is just like gambling in a casino: there can be certain techniques, but the most important factor is luck. I have come across more than a handful of people stating similar assertions. How can there be portfolio managers such as Blackrock or J. P. Morgan with such reputation and so many clients? How is it that they reach better results than other managers do, consistently over time? This report does not provide a direct answer to the above question. However, it compiles the knowledge acquired over a three-month internship at Mercer related to performance measurement and its use to analyze the sources of excess return relative to a benchmark. The following dissertation has been written with the belief that a consistent positive excess return over time is an indicator of manager skill (Christopherson et. al., 1998). In practical terms, daily calculations of performance and risk measures provided a deeper understanding on the financial theory and the actual methods used in a professional environment. In this document, Chapter 1 introduces the basics about the internship and its purpose. Chapter 2 presents a description of the tasks undertaken at Mercer and the financial theory behind them. Chapter 3 contains a practical case of attribution analysis. Chapter 4 holds the main conclusions.

Full textThis thesis takes as its object of study the whole of Gherasim Luca's literary output. Each stage of his Iiterary career is examined with regard to its specific context, from his poetic beginnings in 1930, as young recruit of avant-garde circIes in Bucharest, through the following period when Luca questioned the possibiIity of a "proletarian" literature and the surrealist experience itself, to his last published "ontophoniques" poems. My contribution is continuous with previous work on the work and life of Luca but it both enriches and modifies significantly earlier scholarship in the areas of biography, bibliography, and textual analysis. The fundamental, guiding, methdological principles of my study are: 1) to historicize Luca's literary works written in French and Romanian (i. E. , to examine the dynamic of his texts in their historical context and chronology); 2) to make systematic use of unpublished documents (especially those located in the "Gherasim Luca Archive" in the "Bibliothèque Jacques Doucet" in Paris) ; 3) to carry out a careful and close analysis of Luca's Romanian texts. My contribution is original in that it makes Luca's work accessible to readers who do not know Romanian. I also place particular emphasis on elucidating the genesis of the poet's writings. This is necessary because this dimension has been neglected in the work of previous critics

Full textThis analysis of Jean-Luc Godard’s film “Pierrot le Fou” makes use of linguistic, semiotic and psycho-analytic tools. This approach avoids external references: it is the object itself which has determined the structure and organization of my work. A film takesform and remains only in one’s memory, and this fact creates serious misinterpretations. A rigourous descriptive treatment is therefore called for. Book One is a review of the discourses which cut across one another in “Pierrot le Fou”. The combination of heterogeneous elements (images, sound, words, texts) is studied by focusing on the construction of the narrative. Book Two attempts to grasp the creative movement in Godard’s work which wavers between desire and refusal, and between death wish and despair with life. On the one hand, he employs a strategy aimed at demolishing the existent discourses; on the other hand, he wants to bring into unexpected confrontation bits of life torn away from reality, and to make of them poetry. In “Pierrot le Fou” every detail is justified by its relation to other details and to the whole. The continual reference to poetry (Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Céline and to painting reveals the profound utopianism of Godard: this means renewing meaning in order to communicate at last. His demand is such that in order to bring Beauty into evidence, the film at any given moments seems to threaten to destroy meaning altogether. The appendices include the screenplay, as well as a diagram of the entire film: the technical details are show in their relation to the unfolding of the film. “Blockaus USA”, a short film by Le Hémonet, is treated in the same manner. This short which lasts 14 minutes is both in recognition of “Pierrot le Fou” and its pastiche; its inclusion makes it possible to introduce, in Chapter 3 of Book Two, a counterpoint in the analysis

Full textThe research suggests a pedagogic reading about adolescents’ existential disease: a phenomenon which assumes more and more alarming appearances in our society. Referring to usual interpretative psychiatric, psychological and sociological models, we express the hypothesis that the frustration of the inalienable human motivation of giving sense to life could be the common matrix of the various forms of youth disease: bullying, unconcern, disorientation, apathy, aggressiveness and addiction. This existential dissatisfaction involves education and the pedagogic way to give an answer to uneasiness through educability and potential resources of the growing subjects, beyond pathological elements and needs to be fulfilled. So, considering Viktor E. Frankl Existential Analysis, which is the theoretic background of this research, the borders of the existential dimension of the adolescents' discomfort reveal themselves, together with the foundation of a pedagogic anthropology able to legitimate the human being’s needs of meaning. The research ends with a proposal of some methodological features, useful to explain the general aim of the “conscience refinement”, heart of genuine search of meaning oriented education.
Coetzee, Azille Alta. "Addressing the problem of sexual violence in South Africa : a philosophical analysis of equality and sexual difference in the constitution and the new sexual offences act." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/85588.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis, the South African legal system's attempt to address sexual violence is explored through the lens of the work of the French feminist philosopher, Luce Irigaray. It will be argued that the South African equality jurisprudence lays the foundation for a strongly Irigarayan approach to the transformation of sex and gender relations in so far as our right to equality can be interpreted as being underpinned by an acknowledgment of embodiment, sexual particularity and difference. Our Constitution envisions equality as a value informed by difference rather than sameness and, in accordance with Irigaray’s work, it can be said that the implication of this is that the pursuit of the transformation of sex and gender relations on the one hand, and an acknowledgment of sexual difference on the other, are not mutually exclusive, but that sex equality instead calls for a fundamental recognition of sexual difference and an authentic response to the demands thereof. However, it will be argued that our newly reformed sexual violence legislation undermines the progress made on a constitutional level by entrenching a problematic approach to sexual difference in the definition of the crime of rape. This is done through firstly, defining the crime of rape in gender-neutral terms and secondly, retaining the concept of consent as the distinguishing characteristic between sex and rape. I will argue that through these features, our sexual violence legislation reflects the most basic mistakes that Irigaray identifies with the law. It will be argued that the legislation, on the one hand, denies sexual difference in a way that is prejudicial to women through its gender-neutral language, while at the same time, through the concept of consent, (re-)introducing a hierarchical construction of masculine and feminine sexuality into the Act in terms of which femininity is construed as derivative of, and inferior to, masculinity. Furthermore, the combination of the gender neutrality of the definition and the concept of consent exacerbates the situation, in so far as the gender neutrality masks the harmful construal of sexual difference that is incorporated in the definition through the concept of consent. Accordingly, judged from an Irigarayan perspective, the South African sexual violence legislation is deeply problematic. In addition, the legislation undercuts important constitutional developments, in so far as it ignores the constitutional insights that, firstly, sexual violence is a problem of sex inequality, and that secondly, the pursuit of the transformation of sex and gender relations is served, rather than undercut by a concern with particularities. On this basis, it is argued that the South African sexual violence legislation should be amended so that the concept of consent is removed and the crime of rape is defined in sex-specific language (while still allowing for male victims and female perpetrators) that facilitates judicial understanding of the complexities of the crime of rape.

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to understand how Luc Ferrari builds the heterogeneity of his music. The composer conceives creation as a space in which, according to his words, ideas that do not “necessarily have links between them” meet each other. Pieces then become a space of cohabitation, of friction, in which other components share space with "music", in the narrow sense. The propositions “place, story and experiences” are attempts to characterize these others components that constitute the heterogeneous of Ferrari’s music. In the first part, "music and place," we see how pieces become, at times, places. Real spaces, externals, in relation to a lived experience. In this part we will analyse Hétérozygote. In the second part, "music and story", we study the importance that composer give to the narrative in his work, starting from the sons anecdotiques to the general evolution of scenarios. With the analysis of Far-West News, we measure how Luc Ferrari’s works rely as much on musicals forms as on the development of stories. Finally, with the third part, "music and experiences", we want to refer to a confluence of experiences: the anecdote of the composer resonates in the experience of the listeners, who dump their experiences into the pieces. Through the expression of his experience, Luc Ferrari calls and works with these subjective experiences of listeners, who will also share the spaces of works. To explain this idea, we will analyse Chantal, ou le portrait d’une villageoise

Full textThe last French presidential elections clearly show the salience of populism in France, while 40% of the population offers its support to the two parties of this allegiance. However, populism in France, seen through speeches, remains an under-studied field. Therefore, this dissertation will analyze how populist discourses vary depending on political orientation. More precisely, it explores, in a comparative manner, the discourse of two French populist politicians: Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon. 38 non-institutional discourses and 53 institutional discourses will be studied with the help of the theoretical framework of Raoul Girardet. The latter highlights the presence of four populist myths in the speeches of French politicians: the myth of the conspiracy, the myth of the golden age, the myth of the savior, and the myth of unity. Subsequently, a second comparison— this time between the two types of speeches—will also be made. Several results can be drawn from this study. It seems that Le Pen and Mélenchon do not make a completely similar use of the four myths in their speeches. While the myths of conspiracy and of unity are expressed in a similar way by both politicians, the golden age myth is only partially demonstrated. The last myth (the myth of the savior) is used comparably in both politician’s speeches for contemporary saviors, but not for those of the past. In addition, Mélenchon's speeches remain relatively stable depending on the location, while Le Pen's vary considerably more.

Full textIn this thesis I have examined how Jesus' proclamation of the kingdom of God can be understood from the Gospel of Luke. A close examination of a single gospel, and moreover not the whole gospel but only four pericopes in it, narrows the scope considerably. The value in trying to understand what Jesus is saying based on this single coherent source is that it can have a greater depth than the picture put together by any number of fragments from different sources. In Luke's Gospel Jesus mentions the word kingdom as referring to the Kingdom of God over 20 times, in a total of 18 episodes. With the method of discourse analysis, I have divided these occurrences into three categories which I call the discourse of A, B and C. Discourse A is about the kingdom of God having the highest priority, but there is no description of the kingdom. Discourse B describes the kingdom of God in some way. Discourse C mentions the kingdom of God as a promise. The four pericopes I analyze in detail, in different ways represent the discourses I have identified in the gospel as a whole. Lk 11:1-4 belong to discourse A, Lk 11:14-23 and Lk 17:20-21 to discourse B, and Lk 22:24-30 to discourse C. The tradition that the author of the double work of Luke-Acts is precisely Luke, goes back to the mid 100's. The work is characterized by universalism and a certain vision of wealth and poverty that probably came from the author's congregation in Antioch. There the gospel to non-Jews was preached, and there was commitment in the poor and needy. It was important not to get caught up in the worldly life and be tempted to accumulate wealth. Discipleship should be wholehearted. When Jesus speaks of the kingdom of God in the Gospel of Luke, it may sound as if it is about a territory. But the concept of the kingdom of God, in the original text ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ means rather God's dominion. It is not an area or a place, but a state that is determined by God's reign. At the same time, it is impossible to rule ”nowhere”, so there is still a territory implicit in the concept. There was a duality in the perception of the kingdom of God in Jesus' time, which meant that it was both a way of conceiving the world's current situation and an eschatological concept. Through a detailed exegetical analysis of the basic text for each pericope I have reached conclusions on the theological message of the kingdom of God in the texts. The analysis of Lk 11:1-4 shows that the Lord's Prayer contains an indirect description of God's kingdom as an ideal state. God is assumed to have the power to bring the kingdom into being, but the human will and activity also plays a role. Pericope Lk 11:14-20 shows that God's kingdom is where God is at work. It can be here and now. God works through Jesus when he frees a man from a dumb demon. But he doesn't only work through Jesus but through all who do good. In pericope Lk 17:20-21 the question of when the kingdom of God will come is asked, and Jesus responds in a way that makes the kingdom seem within reach already in the present. In Jesus' promise to the disciples of equal fellowship with him in his own kingdom in Lk 22:28-30, he equates himself with God. He promises a future of glory for those who are faithful to him. An attempt at a synthesis of the theological messages that the analyses of the four pericopes led to, is that the kingdom of God according to the Gospel of Luke seems to refer to the victory of the perfect good over evil. The concept of the kingdom remains ambiguous and mysterious. What the analyses contribute to is mainly highlighting the possible meanings of the received text, which are inevitably limited in each translation.

Full textThe focus of this master’s thesis is the integration of improvisation in three of my recent pieces: Nyctophilia – minimum 11’00’’ – for string quartet and soloist improviser ; Æther – 10’’ – for a trio of undetermined instruments ; Presqu’étoile – for full orchestra. As an introduction, I present my artistic concerns, the origin of my work, and the seeming duality that places improvisation in opposition to composition. Then I draw, according to my personal influences, a brief portrait of improvisation in jazz and in art music, primarily in the second half of the 20th century. Finally, I analyze three of my pieces to show the means utilized to integrate improvisation into composition. Each piece exhibits a specific way to manage the inclusion of improvisation, these methods being the result of my reflections and research. Nyctophilia – axis as a means of information management ; Æther – conversationnality and free improvisation ; Presqu’étoile – comprovisation in relation to Æther.

Full textLife Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a multicriteria method to assess environmental impacts of goods and services. In its early stages, LCA, known as Attributional (ALCA), was used to assess environmental impacts in a status-quo situation for benchmarking, environmental communication and product development. Recent methodological developments led to Consequential LCA (CLCA), which aims to quantify direct and indirect impacts of changes, through market mechanisms, allowing for public policy assessment. The aim of this Ph.D. thesis is to develop a methodological framework to assess public policy instruments in the livestock sector by combining LCA and economic modellingThis thesis is organized into three axes: i) identification and characterization of environmental performances of dairy production technologies through ALCA; ii) adaptation of MATSIM-LUCA economic model to the needs of the thesis; iii) environmental impact assessment through CLCA of dairy quota removal and implementation of a grass premium in the European Union. This work provides i) initial development of a methodological framework for assessing public policy instruments in the livestock sector and ii) identification of several improvements needed to make the method operational for stakeholders

Full textCould it be that movies did not started talking because they had something to say, but in order to make the speech speak, to overhear it, to inform the discursive imaginaries that shape our common experience ? Could it be that language is at the very heart of the art of film, as it has been at the centre of modern theoretical knowledges ? Our times have invented the means of reproducing speech technically, but we have probably not fully appreciated the importance of the anthropological revolution induced by the exceptional visibility that it provides to it. Our hypothesis is that there is a cinematographic thought of language and of its uses, an aesthetical, rhetorical and poetical knowledge that is added to speech when it is represented in films. Putting the filmed speech in the centre of the analysis of four cinematographic fables — Fritz Lang’s Fury (1936), Sidney Lumet’s Fail Safe (1963), Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salò (1975) and Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme (2010) — our work proposes four « language lessons », questioning the powers and misfortunes of speech in a world convinced that we communicate massively. What do films think when they talk ? Among other things, they meditate the social and political significance of speech acts
