Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. The high-resolution CO2 record from Law Dome ice core reveals that atmospheric CO2 concentration stalled during the 1940s (so-called CO2 plateau). Since the fossil-fuel emissions did not decrease during the period, this stalling implies the persistence of a strong sink, perhaps sustained for as long as a decade or more. Double-deconvolution analyses have attributed this sink to the ocean, conceivably as a response to the very strong El Niño event in 1940–1942. However, this explanation is questionable, as recent ocean CO2 data indicate that the range of variability in the ocean sink has been rather modest in recent decades, and El Niño events have generally led to higher growth rates of atmospheric CO2 due to the offsetting terrestrial response. Here, we use the most up-to-date information on the different terms of the carbon budget: fossil-fuel emissions, four estimates of land-use change (LUC) emissions, ocean uptake from two different reconstructions, and the terrestrial sink modelled by the TRENDY project to identify the most likely causes of the 1940s plateau. We find that they greatly overestimate atmospheric CO2 growth rate during the plateau period, as well as in the 1960s, in spite of giving a plausible explanation for most of the 20th century carbon budget, especially from 1970 onwards. The mismatch between reconstructions and observations during the CO2 plateau epoch of 1940–1950 ranges between 0.9 and 2.0 Pg C yr−1, depending on the LUC dataset considered. This mismatch may be explained by (i) decadal variability in the ocean carbon sink not accounted for in the reconstructions we used, (ii) a further terrestrial sink currently missing in the estimates by land-surface models, or (iii) LUC processes not included in the current datasets. Ocean carbon models from CMIP5 indicate that natural variability in the ocean carbon sink could explain an additional 0.5 Pg C yr−1 uptake, but it is unlikely to be higher. The impact of the 1940–1942 El Niño on the observed stabilization of atmospheric CO2 cannot be confirmed nor discarded, as TRENDY models do not reproduce the expected concurrent strong decrease in terrestrial uptake. Nevertheless, this would further increase the mismatch between observed and modelled CO2 growth rate during the CO2 plateau epoch. Tests performed using the OSCAR (v2.2) model indicate that changes in land use not correctly accounted for during the period (coinciding with drastic socioeconomic changes during the Second World War) could contribute to the additional sink required. Thus, the previously proposed ocean hypothesis for the 1940s plateau cannot be confirmed by independent data. Further efforts are required to reduce uncertainty in the different terms of the carbon budget during the first half of the 20th century and to better understand the long-term variability of the ocean and terrestrial CO2 sinks.

Abstract:
Abstract During the Second World War, both in the Dutch East Indies and in Curaçao, journals were published in which Dutch authors could publish their works unhampered by German censorship. In addition, literary works in Dutch were published in the Dutch East Indies, South Africa and New York. A man involved in all these initiatives was Jan Greshoff, an author who had played an important role in Dutch literature during the time between the two world wars. In this article, the role of Greshoff in relation to the literary journal De Stoep, which originated in Curaçao after the German occupation of Holland in 1940, will be explored. Although he never went to Curaçao and never met the journal’s founder, Luc. Tournier, in person, Greshoff played an important role in the history of De Stoep during the years of the war, and thus indirectly in the development of Dutch literature in Curaçao.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The community is divided between its political construction and its tragic expressions. The community is also the milieu through which philosophy transfers its truths to the political field. Through a comparison of these propositions with Plato's and Aristotle's, this study, first, emphasizes the function of myth in the birth of political community, and the part played by tragedy which, through its representation of the city's memories of internal conflicts, obliges it to face them. Dyonisus, and the danger he carries with him from one city to another, is the deity – the repulsed deity – through which this study opens onto the genealogy of Bataillienne community. Following Bataille's experiences and interventions in different groups - journals, colleges, and secret societies – this study weaves together representations of man and of community, recalling Jean-Luc Nancy's and Maurice Blanchot's subsequent readings. Because he constituted a community to respond the rise of fascisms, and because he afterwards turned away from it to commit himself to inner experience, Bataille bore witness to the experience of the decline of community. If totalitarisms gave rise to forms of absolutization of the community, what is at stake here is an interrogation of the place of Bataille in these reflexions and an accounting for the importance of his thought and his experiences, which have been dismissed. The sovereign, erotic and sacred part running across community and going beyond it, is thus the part that is finally recalled to show the importance of sovereignty and non-knowledge in a political thought that Bataille put to the test confronting the events of his time

Abstract:
Our research offers a critical interpretation of the capitalist economic system that is presented to today's society as a new ideology that aims to condition people's identities by reducing them to its decisions. Based on the interpretation of the work "Le nouvel esprit du capitalisme" by Luc Boltanski and Ève Chiapello, we observe the emergence of a society that is developing in an epistemology of networks. In this new dynamic of the society, the verticality of traditional hierarchies is replaced by the horizontality of interactions guided by temporary projects. This new spirit of capitalism is responsible for forging the "cité par projets" (project-based city), a symbolic city, with its own logic and values that are imposed as a moral injunction inculcated in the individuals. We can see how this new social configuration generates transformations in human relations, especially in their aesthetic aspirations, and develops a relationship dynamic with an emphasis on the ability to establish connections. This new oppressive spirit of capitalism ends up reducing and affecting self-esteem, in other words, human capacities to interpret their existence through their potential: to speak, act, narrate and impute themselves as individuals responsible for their actions. In the project-based city, the individual is reduced to the projectivist equation of life, which becomes meaningful based on their ability to connect. In this context of a networked society, we seek to establish a dialog with the philosophical work of Paul Ricœur, fundamentally from his work “Soi-même comme um autre”. Our intention is to present the concept of narrative identity as a tool for rescuing personal identity, which has been captivated by capitalist ideology. Ricœur seemed to want to show how there is a heuristic force in the story that each individual tells about themselves, a force that is ultimately practical. The rescue of personal identity through narrative mediation is a subversive critique of the forms of human humiliation unleashed by the project-based city. Narrative identity thus becomes, secondly, resistance against the accelerated movement of life that aims to limit human action to a time that is merely work-related. If, in one case, the project-based city steals the individual's ability to produce their own moral conscience, in the other, narrative identity calls for the recognition of a person who places him/herself in relation to their own self and the other, and is therefore capable of interpreting their own existence

Abstract:
This work is a film commentary, based on the critical analysis method introduced by Walter Benjamin. The starting point is an essay written in 1941, "About the concept of history", in which he puts forward a certain number of points leading to redifining the position and vocation of the historian in a sociolagically, technologically and politically shattered modern context. He asks the historian to rub history up the wrong way, by holding and saving moments, by moving points of views and envisaging the meaning of this moment in History. From this basic premise, Brice Dellsperger's film, Body double (x), is cast as a manifest and specific time, model of a type of film-making. Experimental, as well as formal, it was born from the remake, a phenomenon already known in modern arts between 1990 and 2000. For Body double (x) is a copy, frame for frame and word for word, of L'important c'est d'aimer (1976) directed by A. Zulawski. In this commentary, I use Benjamin's concepts : the thing content and the truth content. The thing content corresponds to the film material analysis, that is, the formal analysis of all the constituents of the picture, as well as the process, peculiar to the re-directing of the original movie. The truth content corresponds to the philosophical, historical and political angle on the film and performative process. The film, as a remake, questions about Copy and Original notions on a relational mode. Finally, by focusing looks on the body of one unique actor, Jean-Luc Verna, it restores an aesthetic and ethical link between the human figure and its representation

Abstract:

Abstract:
Certain contemporary texts and movies, by showing the presence of an enunciator-observer, use processes of writing which question the notion of fiction. This enunciator-observer is recognizable, in texts, through the figure of the narrator-writer-witness and, in movies, by the patent presence of a recording camera in a unique and distant point of view. Through the recording which they suggest and the distant place of the enunciator, these texts and movies reveal singular devices of creation and involves new attitudes of reading. The result of the research is explained in three parts. The first part intends to remind the positions of the theorists of cinema and literature on the notions of fiction, enunciation and point of view. The second part defines a corpus (selecting texts and movies from Annie Ernaux, Nicole Malinconi, Emmanuel Carrère, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Joachim Lafosse and Samuel Collardey) and marks, by classification, the indices of fiction or non-fiction - classification which reveals the massive presence of formal common indices of non-fiction bound to the treatment of the point of view and to the enunciative marking. The third part is based on the interviews realized with the authors in order to understand the process of production (intentions and devices) and that of the reception of the works (readings). It ends with conclusions on contemporary literary and film art, real and society. The final conclusion summarizes the thesis by using the expressions "other fiction" and "fiction of the other"

Abstract:
The theatrical character did not elude the specific suspicion of our modernity. For the last thirty years, its coming to a crisis, which was persistent, gradually ended up in the tightening up of writings into mere drama of speech. Some writers now do without fictitious identities which could be spotted, so that they only concentrate on the stakes of words and voices ; I studied writings which imposed an imagination of the character while giving pride of place to the voice. The authors studied here do not oust the quesiton of embodiment ; they distribute the voices, gives names to their pseakers. However, the onomasti inventory of their theatrical personnel reveals that the people they put on stage will not be grabbed as classical effect-characters. The notion of effect-figure which examines the character as an object of glance as well as poetic construction enables us to define the stakes of représentation wchich are specific to these theatrical identities of another kind

Abstract:
AbstractThe land uses and covers of Europe are the most systematically mapped in the world today, and their associated datasets offer the greatest spatial and thematic detail. Thanks to the work done within the Copernicus Land Monitoring programme run by the European Environmental Agency (EEA) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, there are many general LUC datasets covering most of the European continent. These general datasets map all land uses and covers on the ground, without focusing on any specific type. However, whereas some cover the whole of Europe, others only map specific local areas of interest, such as urban or coastal areas, riparian zones or spaces protected under the Nature 2000 network. CORINE Land Cover (CLC) is the flagship European LUC mapping programme and a reference worldwide. It has provided consistent LUC information at a detailed scale (1:100,000) every 6 years since 1990. This is the result of a high degree of coordination between many different organizations and institutions across Europe. The Copernicus programme also includes other European datasets such as Urban Atlas, N2K, Riparian Zones and Coastal Zones, which provide very detailed LUC information at higher levels of spatial detail (scale 1:10,000) for specific geographical area types: Functional Urban Areas, the Natura 2000 network, riparian zones from Strahler level 2–8 rivers and areas 10 km away from the coastline. However, these projects do not cover the same long timeframe as CLC. In addition, their long-term future is far from clear in that updates are only planned for Urban Atlas and Coastal Zones. PELCOM, GlobCorine and the Annual Land Cover Product are the European projects that most resemble the LUC maps available at global and supra-national scales for other parts of the world. They were obtained through classification of satellite imagery. PELCOM and GlobCorine are only available for a few dates and at quite coarse spatial resolutions: 1 km and 300 m respectively. The Annual Land Cover Product consists of a series of LUC maps for the period 2000–2019 at a highly detailed spatial resolution (30 m). It offers information for a large number of different points in time. However, it makes a separate classification of land uses each year, which means that change analysis with this dataset is more uncertain than with CLC or other Copernicus Land Monitoring products. HILDA and S2GLC 2017 are LUC datasets produced within the framework of different research projects, which can be considered reference products in their respective fields. HILDA provides one of the largest time series of LUC maps currently available, spanning the period from 1900 to 2010. S2GLC 2017 is one of the most spatially detailed LUC mapping experiences at a supra-national scale, with a spatial resolution of 10 m.

Abstract:
AbstractSeveral general Land Use Cover (LUC) datasets are available for Africa. They provide a general picture of the land uses and covers in more than one African country, rather than focusing on any specific type. In this chapter, we review six datasets of this kind. Only one (CCI LAND COVER – S2 PROTOTYPE, 30 m) covers the whole continent, while the others map certain specific regions of Africa. All these datasets have been produced within the context of specific projects, usually sponsored by international organizations such as the European Space Agency (ESA), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Once these projects come to an end, no new updates of the maps were published, which limits the potential and the temporal resolution of the available datasets. For Africa, only the West Africa Land Use Land Cover (2 km) and the SERVIR-ESA (30 m) provide a time series of LUC maps. The first provides maps for three reference years (1975, 2000, 2013), while in the second the number of maps available and their respective reference years vary from country to country: from 2 to 4 different editions issued between 1990 and 2015. AFRICOVER (1:200,000) and the Congo Basin Vegetation Types dataset (300 m) provide LUC information for just one reference year, although they were created from imagery covering a long time-span: 1994–2001 for AFRICOVER and 2000–2007 for Congo Basin Vegetation Types. The SADC Land Cover Database (1:250,000) was obtained by merging and harmonizing national and regional LUC datasets. As a result, the reference year varies from one country to the next, always between 1990 and 1997. The CCI LAND COVER – S2 PROTOTYPE was produced at the highest spatial resolution of all the datasets reviewed in this chapter (30 m). It also provided the most comprehensive, most updated LUC image of Africa, with information for the year 2015/16.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter we review some examples of general Land Use Cover (LUC) mapping at a supra-national level in America and Asia. These datasets provide a general overview of the land uses and covers in specific American or Asian regions, without focusing on any particular land use or cover. For Asia, we have only identified one dataset mapping the Himalayan region, whereas for America five different datasets were identified. Only three of these are reviewed here, as the other two (SERENA, South America 30 m) are not available for download. The most ambitious project of all those reviewed is NALCMS, which coordinates the production of a LUC map for the whole of North America (Canada, Mexico, USA) at detailed scales (30–250 m) and using the same classification legend. It is the only dataset of all those reviewed that provides a time series of LUC maps (2005, 2010 and 2015). The Himalaya Regional Land Cover database is a vector-based map that provides information on LUC changes over the period 1970/80–2007 at a scale of 1:350,000. The other two American datasets—LBA-ECO LC-08 (1 km, 1987/91) and MERISAM2009 (300 m, 2008/10)—are raster-based and only available for one date, therefore making change detection impossible.

Abstract:
Background: Connected speech, an ecologically valid task, represents a valuable tool to support the detection of linguistic and cognitive impairment. Objective: First, to verify whether connected speech can differentiate oral narrative production between adults with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and cognitively healthy older adults (HOA). Second, to verify whether specific speech graph attributes are associated with episodic, working, and semantic memory. Methods: 24 AD patients (age=72.75±8.13; education=4.25±3.30) and 48 HOA (age=69.85±7.06; education=5.08±3.10) produced an oral narrative task based on a sequence of pictures and performed episodic, working, and semantic memory tasks. Narratives were transcribed and each word was represented as a node and the temporal sequence was represented as directed edges. Graph connectedness was assessed by counting the number of edges (E), the number of nodes in the largest connected component (LCC) and the number of nodes in the largest strongly connected component (LSC). Results: AD patients produced less connected narratives than the HOA, with fewer edges (p=0.0035) and smaller LSC (p=0.0116). Semantic memory correlated moderately with LCC (Rho=0.59, p=0.002) exclusively in AD. Episodic memory correlated with LSC in HOA (Rho=0.47, p= <0.001). Conclusion: Word-graphs connectedness represents a practical tool to assess cognitive impairment in AD patients.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ciletuh, southwest Java has been well known as one of the places in Java where pre-Tertiary basement rocks are exposed (Verbeek and Fennema, 1896; Duyfjes, 1940; van Bemmelen, 1949; Sukamto, 1975). In plate tectonic point of view, Ciletuh has been known as place outcropping melange complex related to pre-Tertiary oceanic plate subduction (Thayyib et al., 1977). Ciletuh subduction regionally has been linked to the Cretaceous subduction zones of Luk Ulo/Karang Sambung (Central Java) and Meratus Mountains (South Kalimantan) (Hutchison, 1973; Asikin 1974; Hamilton, 1979). Ciletuh subduction however, has not been dated using metamorphic rocks formed in its subduction zone. Its link to Luk Ulo and Meratus subduction zone only based on the presence of melange, which also lacks of data Meanwhile, subduction zones of Luk Ulo and Meratus have been dated and analysed. We herewith present the results of new field studies and various analyses carried out in the last five years of the Ciletuh subduction complex. The indication of Cretaceous subduction has not found from the date measurement, Ciletuh shows Eocene related subduction. Most of the ophiolites were island-arc tholeiitic or island-arc basalt formed in supra-subduction zone. The overlying olistostrome deposits were younger than previously considered and lasted until early/middle Miocene. Some of the basaltic pillowed lava is considered as part of the ophiolite, while the ones at Gunung Badak is more likely a part of the early Miocene Jampang volcanism. Link of Ciletuh to Early Cretaceous subduction of Luk Ulo is not supported by geochronological data. The new knowledge of Ciletuh subduction implies the pre-Tertiary and Paleogene geology of Java, and petroleum prospectivities of the Paleogene objectives of southern West Java. New problems arise and need more field data and analyses to find out the answers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The objective of this work is to propose an analytical model, which is based on a fabric flexible composite theory, to characterize soft tissues (such as heart muscle, skin, lung, blood vessel, etc.). The bi-axial mechanical behaviors of the soft tissues have been studied by many researchers. A common approach is to propose a set of constitutive equations, then use data regression method to obtain input values from both simple and bi-axial test results. This usually gives a good description of the stress-strain behavior for the particular material but gives no physical meaning of these input values obtained from the mathematical curve fittings. Pao et al. (1980) suggested that the mechanical properties of the fiber bundles must be predicted first to compute the stresses. In this proposed model, a soft tissue is considered as an orthogonal composite element containing wavy fibers in a soft incompressible matrix (Luo and Chou, 1990).

Abstract:
The current construction climate in the UK is moving forward with a much greater attention on cost certainty, sustainability and adoption of innovative technologies. The UK Construction Strategy 2025 provides a clear direction towards achieving such goals by 2025. Life Cycle Costing (LCC) is one of successful techniques for identifying the total cost of ownership in construction assets. Even though the technique has 50 years of history, the application and the diffusion of the technique within the construction domain is comparatively limited. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the evolution and current status of LCC within construction context through Bibliometric Analysis of journal publications indexed in Web of Science database (1970-2020). A series of Contents Analyses was performed and visualisation maps were generated via VOSviewer. The findings proved that LCC has been absorbed into construction in late 90’s and there is a continuous rise in the global uptake from 2013 onwards. With limited budgets and growing demand for sustainability, an integrated methodology linking LCC, Life Cycle Assessment and Performance optimisation is apparently the way forward for LCC.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The flow through a compliant-walled channel or tube is analogous to human systems, such as blood vessels (Holt, 1969), the trachea during forced expiration (Elad and Kamm, 1989), and, with some limitations, the glottis (Conrad, 1980). Typical studies involving collapsible channels have used a rigid channel with a longitudinal section of the channel wall replaced with a deformable structure, such as a membrane. Numerical and analytical studies of the flow and accompanying wall deformation have used 1-dimensional or lumped-parameter models (e.g., Shapiro, 1977; Cancelli and Pedley, 1985) as well as detailed flow and structural models using the finite element method (e.g., Rast, 1994; Luo and Pedley, 1995, 1996; Shim and Kamm, 2002; Cai and Luo, 2003).

Abstract:
This paper explores the competitive threat posed by the People's Republic of China (PRC) to Latin America and Caribbean (LAC). It focuses on the impact of PRC's rise as a major exporter of manufactured goods and discusses bilateral trade between LAC and PRC. The authors explore these issues with trade data collected from 1990-2002, analyzing and comparing export performance and specialization patterns in the global market as well as in the U.S.A., which is the main market for both the PRC and LAC. This paper was presented at the 2004 LAEBA Annual Conference, held in Beijing, People's Republic of China, on December 3-4, 2004.

Abstract:
In this paper, the authors examine levels and trends of labor market outcomes for women in the 1990's using household survey data for 18 Latin American countries covering several years per country. The outcomes analyzed include labor force participation rates, the distribution of employment of women across sectors of the economy (formal versus informal), and earnings. Next, the authors examine the role of schooling in explaining the increase in female labor force participation in LAC countries. All of these findings suggest a fair degree of change in the role of women within households and in the labor market. The authors conclude that the macro economic picture of stagnation for LAC in the 1990s masks non-trivial developments in the division of labor and time allocation by gender.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes capital inflow surges in emerging economies from 1980 to 2005. Estimated probit models are used, which discriminate well between surges associated with banking crises or recessions, and those surges that end without such events. The results indicate that the composition of inflows and the extent of financial reform are significant determinants of outcomes. Estimated models are applied to the Latin American post-2005 inflow surge and find relatively high estimated probabilities for banking crises and recessions. This suggests that recent inflow surges characterized by high portfolio and banking inflows are a potential cause for concern and that the results constitute a prima facie case for macro prudential interventions.

Abstract:
Although greenhouse gas emissions from the Latin America (LAC) region are not particularly significant, climate change is a worldwide challenge. Hence, we analyze the main factors that increase and mitigate emissions in LAC countries by emphasising the importance of preserving and safeguarding forested regions. To do that, we estimate a Panel Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square model for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru by using a sample period between 1970 and 2018. We find that an increase of 1% in forested area leads to a reduction of CO2 (Kt per capita) emissions by 0.23%. From the policy perspective, our findings draw attention towards the promotion of reforestation and afforestation initiatives. Furthermore, these long term policies will hold substantial significance, given the region's immense potential, with more than a fifth of the world's forest reserves.

Abstract:
Under rapid urbanization that took place from around 1960 to 1990, the Republic of Korea has been facing various urban problems such as the expansion of urban slum, traffic congestion and environmental pollution. Among the various responses to these challenges, New Town development can be regarded as one of the most successful and effective strategies, which hasover 50 years of development history in five phases. Korea's New Towns were developed with three main purposes according to the periodic needs: industry support, housing supply, and nationwide balanced development. Phase I New Towns (1962-81) responded to the country's need for industry promotion. Phase II (1967-86), Phase III (1989-95) and Phase IV (2001-present) New Towns were built in response to the severe lack of housing emerged due to over-concentration in the capital and later its metropolitan area, by providing large-scale housing inside Seoul, in the outer ring of Seoul, and in the Capital Area respectively over time. Finally, the most recent Phase V New Towns (2005-present) provided response to the issue of equitable and balanced development across the country. These development yielded outcomes such as housing market stabilization, improvement of housing condition, securement of public and green spaces, economic effect on related industries, and expansion of urban infrastructure. The paper suggests three success factors of Korea's New Town development. First is feasible planning and concrete implementation strategies that enabled the implementing organizations to overcome conflicts and carry on with the project until completion. The second factor is institutional driving force and legal support which involved establishing a dedicated bureau, defining clear organizational structure and stakeholder roles, and providing timely Acts to support the land acquisition and construction. The third success factor is reasonable land acquisition methodologies which evolved over time from Land Readjustment to Publically Management Development. This paper also presents Sustainable New own Design Criteria as an important implication for the LAC to consider, which includes social, economic and environmental sustainability that pursue outcomes such as social inclusion, self-sufficiency, connectivity, green space and smart resource management. Exchanging these experience of Korea and promoting mutual cooperation would be highly valuable for the cities in LAC to minimize the trial and error and maximize the success factors experienced by Korea as an attempt to relieve the challenges of rapid urbanization they are faced with at present. In this regard, it is anticipated that Korea can actively share its accumulated New Town experience and knowledge and act as one of the promising development partners of the countries in LAC.
