Abstract:
A modification of the Elrod and Ng turbulence model is presented. The order of magnitude of the Reynolds number in thin lubricant films varies between 102 and 105. For Reynolds numbers higher than 103, the fluid flow becomes turbulent. It is well accepted in lubrication to use a zero-equation turbulence model of the type developed by Constantinescu (1962, ASME J. Basic Eng., 84(1), pp. 139–151), Ng (1964, ASLE Trans., 7, pp. 311–321), Ng and Pan (1965, ASME J. Basic Eng., 87, pp. 675–688), Elrod and Ng (1967, ASME J. Lubr. Technol., 89, pp. 346–362), or Hirs (1973, ASME J. Lubr. Technol., 95, pp. 137–146). The Elrod and Ng approach is certainly the most efficient for combined pressure and shear flows where the Reynolds number is above 104. This paper proposes a modification of the Elrod and Ng model in order to ensure a good correlation with experimental data obtained with low Reynolds number turbulent flows. The present model, coupled with a scaling factor for taking into account the transition to turbulence, is therefore accurate for all of the typical Reynolds number values recorded in lubrication. The model is then applied to hydrostatic noncontacting face seals, which usually operate at Reynolds numbers varying from 103 to 104. The accuracy of the model is shown for this particular application of radial rotating flow. A special study is made of the transition to turbulence. The results are compared with those obtained using the initial Elrod and Ng model. The axial stiffness coefficient and the stability threshold are significantly affected by the turbulence model.

Abstract:
A thermohydrodynamic (THD) analysis of a fully circumferentially grooved hydrodynamic bearing is presented. The pressure distribution is obtained using the short bearing approximation taking into account the viscosity variation in the radial and circumferential coordinates. The axial temperature variation is also included by an axial averaging technique, which incorporates the supply pressure and film entry temperature in the energy equation. It is found that the determination of the lubricant temperature at the entry to the film plays an important role in the overall temperature distribution in the bearing. A simplified approach for determining this temperature is presented. An extensive set of experimental results performed by Maki and Ezzat (1980, ASME J. Lubr. Technol., 102, pp. 8–14) is used for validation purposes. The results show that mixing in the inlet groove may cause the film entry temperature to be significantly different from the nominal supply temperature and hence have a significant influence on the bearing temperature.

The article is devoted to toponyms motivated by Slavic compound names with adjective elements: lubo-, -lub, miło-, -mił. This topic is part of the research project called “Names as the Basis of Polish Geographical Names”, carried out at the Institute of the Polish Language at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow. In a two-line analysis (on the antroponymic and toponymic level), enriched with cartographic illustrations, attention was focused on pointing out the chronology of personal names, productivity of the Slavic names in the process of nominating toponyms, and on highlighting the chronology, frequency, geography of oikonyms and their structural types. In over 60 place names created up to the end of the 16th century, and located mainly in Greater Poland, Silesia and Mazovia, 27 names with the above-mentioned elements were preserved. Among them are forms reconstructed from toponyms, such as: *Lubogost, *Lubomysł, *Lubowid, *Lubowit, *Nielub, *Miłobąd, *Miłodrog, *Miłorad, *Niemił. The younger layer of place names dated to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries or introduced officially after 1945 occur mainly in the north and west of Poland.

Abstract:
The LuB12 ® LuB4 ® LuB2 phase transformations on annealing in vacuum (T=(1400÷1800) K, p < 10-2 Pa) are investigated with use of the parent single crystals. SEM and X-ray researches of the corresponding lutetium boride single crystals were carried out before and after their annealing. It is shown that the LuB12 → LuB4 phase transformation takes place in surface layer and transition region spreads inwards the single crystal bulk with time. According to the assessed Lu-B phase diagram the LuB4 phase transformation into other individual phases is impossible, and at first it is shown that under corresponding conditions the LuB4 → LuB2 spontaneous phase transformation takes place both on the surface and in the LuB4 single crystal bulk.

How to preserve memory with music — Galician traditions and the music of Luar na LubreMusic has been and still is a basic medium through which mankind preserves its traditions, history and habits. Nowadays, oral traditions have different ways of spreading, for example, through the Internet, social media or music platforms, but they still need musicians and people who will create the content. Luar na Lubre is one of the most important Galician folk groups, which unites traditional Galician music with Celtic instruments but at the same time rooting it in medieval traditions of Galicia and combining it with Portuguese and Latin-American elements. Through the analysis of Luar na Lubreʼs releases from 2005 to 2012 it is possible to observe how the different parts of wide Galician patrimony unites in their music to help preserve it for new generations by recreating it.

Abstract:
This article is concerned with the simulation of a lubricated contact considering the fluid to be non-Newtonian of the Maxwell type. Severe operating conditions lead to very small surface-to-surface distances. In this situation it is necessary to take roughness effects into account. A popular method consists in averaging the film thickness following Patir and Cheng (ASME J. Lubr. Technol., 100, pp. 12–17, 1978), or more recently Wang et al. (Tribol. Trans., 45(1), pp. 1–10, 2000), with good reported results compared with experimental data. To overcome certain limitations that become apparent at very small film thickness, notably when the roughness is two-dimensional, in 1995 Jai (Math. Modell. Numer. Anal., 29(2), pp. 199–233, 1995) introduced a new technique based on a rigorous homogenization theory in the case of compressible fluid flow. This procedure was further mathematically developed by Buscaglia and Jai (Math. Probl. Eng., 7(4), pp. 355–377, 2001) and applied to tribological problems by Jai and Bou-Saı¨d (ASME J. Tribol., 124, pp. 327–355, 2002). In this paper, we propose a similar homogenized approach in the case of non-Newtonian fluids to avoid numerical problems which are often encountered in other approaches. Results in the homogenized roughness case are obtained and compared with direct numerical solutions.

Faini, Marie Annette. "Transcriptional Control during Quorum Sensing by LuxR and LuxR Homologues." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31994.

Full text
Abstract:
Quorum sensing is a mechanism used by many proteobacteria to regulate expression of target genes in a population-dependent manner. The quorum sensing system of Vibrio fischeri activates the luminescence (lux) operon when the autoinducer signaling molecule (N-3-oxohexanoyl homoserine lactone) is recognized and bound by the activator protein LuxR. LuxR subsequently binds to the lux box centered at à 42.5 bp upstream of the transcription initiation site and activates transcription from the lux operon promoter, resulting in the emission of light at high cell densities. LuxR consists of 250 amino acids arranged into an N-terminal (regulatory) domain and a C-terminal (activation) domain, and is thought to function as an ambidextrous activator capable of making multiple contacts with the alpha and sigma subunits of RNA polymerase (RNAP). Published work describing the results of alanine scanning mutagenesis performed on the C-terminal domain of LuxR (residues 190-250) has identified residues (K198, W201 and I206) that appear to play a role in positive control of transcription initiation. Additional mutagenesis of residues 180-189 has been undertaken via a three-primer or four-primer PCR-based method in this study. Variants of LuxR were screened for their ability to activate luciferase production and to repress transcription from an artificial promoter, and production of full-length LuxR was measured, in an attempt to identify additional positive control variants. No additional positive control variants were found in this study. Work has also been undertaken to identify intergenic suppressors between positive control variants of LuxR and the RNAP alpha subunit, RpoA. Starting with a recombinant Escherichia coli strain encoding the lux operon and LuxR variant I206E, a random chemical mutagenesis was performed on a vector encoding RpoA. Following transformation of the mutated plasmids encoding RpoA, high throughput luminescence assays were used to identify isolates with phenotypes brighter than the control. Isolation of an intergenic suppressor will confirm the existence of protein-protein interactions between LuxR and RpoA within the transcription initiation complex. The ability of other LuxR family members to establish productive protein-protein interactions with RNAP necessary for transcription initiation was also examined. LuxR homologues EsaR of Pantoea stewarti ssp. stewartii, a repressor of known function, and ExpR of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora were also analyzed for their ability to activate the lux operon, as well as to repress transcription from an artificial promoter containing the lux box.

The Luar template processing system used in authoring NCL documents, has development concepts based on reuse of descriptions through document templates. These development concepts can be used in the authorship of other XML-based documents through the analysis, adequacy, design and creation of a new reuse infrastructure based on Luar system. This view shows the processing system of models Luar-X, a generalization and extension Luar model system. The Luar-X keeps the concepts of development of Luar system and he changes, adapts and extends the Luar system architecture to enable development with XML-based languages. The case studies with HTML, SVG and NCL show the feasibility of this new reuse infrastructure, which makes application development and description of agile XML documents.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is: - to set up a general "problematique" of the bilingual lexicography in franco- phone africa, through the french-ciluba case study. The dictionary is so re- placed in its origins, its various ideological understatements, its sociolo- gical preables: which means to explore the fundamentals of the lexicographic discourse in an african franco-lubaphone context. - to analyse the whole range of the existing bilingual dictionaries and lexi- cons , their elaboration as well as their macro- and microstructural shapa, in order to define their linguistic and cultural functionality in comparison with the monolingual dictionaries, and above all to get acquainted with the various lexicographic techniques. - to display a morpho-lexical analysis of the "word" in ciluba language, a graphic unit for the lexicographic text, but the phonological, morphological and morpho-semantical aspects of which have to be isolated for an efficient lexical and semantical analysis of the luba lexicon or the interlinguistic translation. - to conclude in, with the theorical preables for a functionalized model of the bilingual dictionary. As these preables are based on the "problemati- que" and the study the bilingual dictionaries, they provide for the theori- cal elements for the building of dictionaries in the francophone african context. Following the preables is, as an illustration, a lexicographic pro- cessing of a sample of the "nomenclature"

Full text
Abstract:
Badak LNG Plant Bontang have succeeded in mixing different brands of turbomachinery lube oil ISO VG32 which intended to increase flexibility of lube oil usage and eliminate to one brand dependency during operational. The methodology referred to ASTM D7155 Standard Practice for Evaluating Compatibility of Mixtures of Turbine Lubricating Oils and ASTM D4378 Standard Practice for In-Service Monitoring of Mineral Turbine Oils for Steam, Gas and Combined Cycle Turbines. The study was started from lube oil compatibility test at laboratory. After that, a ratio 70:30 of ISO VG32 existing lube oil (DTE Light) and new lube oil (Turbolube XT32) were mixed and trialed to Fuel Gas Compressor and its Turbine Driver. Lube oil and equipment operating parameter such as viscosity, color, water content, total acid number, foaming tendency, oxidation, metal content, flash point, bearing temperature, filter differential pressure, and vibration were collected and compared to baseline data to analyze deterioration indication of lube oil. As long as eight month trial test, there was no deterioration indication of lube oil mixture and no significant influence to the equipment operating performance. Badak LNG have decided to continue lube oil mixing.

Abstract:
In this paper, from the viewpoint of lubricant spreading, we investigate the effect of lube textures which mean a nonuniform distribution of bonding strength between lubricant molecules and the disk surface. Lube textures were formed by irradiating ultraviolet rays through a stripe-patterned mask onto a magnetic disk surface which was partially coated with one-monolayer film of perfluoropolyether. Surface characteristics of the lube textures were evaluated by surface energies ascertained from contact angle measurements. Spreading of the lubricant film was measured by scanning microellipsometry on the striped lube textures in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the stripes. The thickness-dependent diffusion coefficients extracted from the spreading profiles show that lubricant spreading in the regime of film thickness less than 0.2 nm is faster along the stripes, indicating the possibility of controlling the behavior of a lubricant film with lube textures.

Abstract:
Presently, the typical gas turbine based power generator relies on a large, expensive skid system to provide lubrication to the bearings. These skids consist of a large number of expensive components, many of which require maintenance that drives operating cost and creates environmental hazards. A smart lube system based on recently developed technology enables dramatic simplification and cost reduction of the skid system and significantly reduces oil consumption along with the frequency and cost of maintenance. Such a system would take advantage of the availability of advanced pump system controls and fluid nozzle technology to drastically reduce the quantity of oil required, and the resultant heat rejection. As a result, the sizes of reservoir, cooler, filter and piping are greatly reduced. The cost of components, support equipment and maintenance activities will also be reduced to a fraction of their present values.

Full text
Abstract:
A retrofit lube oil injection system is designed with the capability of injecting oil through two lube ports on each cylinder at any time during the engine cycle. The system is installed and tested on a Cooper-Bessemer GMV4 engine. Variations in number of skip cycles, average lube rate, and injection timing are evaluated. Lube oil carry-over is quantified using a dilution tunnel and a standard particulate matter gravimetric measurement technique. Cylinder wall lubrication is quantified using a custom designed fixture that is inserted into the fuel valve port between data points when the engine is shut down. The best lube oil carry-over results for nominal lube rate are obtained by injecting every fourth cycle and injection timing roughly corresponding to the time the piston rings pass the lube ports during expansion.

Full text
Abstract:
A timed lube oil injection system was developed for a field engine to improve power cylinder lubrication. The injection system used advanced prototype electronic injectors. The system was installed on a Cooper GMVA-10 located in West Virginia. A total of four cylinders were included in the study, two for the timed system and two for the baseline mechanical system. Cylinder wall lubrication, cylinder wear, piston wear, and ring wear tests were planned for various engine run times. The prototype timed lube oil system operated essentially until the prototype injector end-of-life was reached at about 1,200 hours. The project was discontinued because of injector issues and the site required a high level availability of the engine for gas compression.

Abstract:
This project is driven by concerns over excessive cylinder lubrication in large bore two-stroke natural gas engines (LBNGE). Excessive cylinder lubrication can lead to: - Increased operating costs due to high lubricating oil consumption. - Poisoning of catalytic converters. - Increased pollutant emissions. Development of an electronically-controlled, power-cylinder lubricator (ECPCL) is a likely solution that could decrease excessive cylinder lubrication. This lubricator would optimize cylinder lubrication by controlling both the injection rate and injection timing, relative to piston position.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, environmental regulations have tightened and community involvement in environmental issues has increased. The pipeline industry has responded by attempting to reduce the negative economic and environmental impact of conventional air-cooled heat exchangers, which are characterized by high noise levels, excessive energy consumption, and high maintenance costs. While industry has had limited success in reducing air cooler noise using silencers and timed variable-speed fans, these solutions are costly. The most effective noise reduction method is to reduce or eliminate noise at its source. The primary goals of this investigation were to address key technical issues and to document natural draft aerial cooler (NDAC) design knowledge. The following objectives were identified: - Form a project team from PRCI-recommended aerial cooler manufacturers to design a quiet aerial cooler - Conduct technical and economic analyses to determine the actual operating needs and constraints of NDACs - Conduct market analyses to evaluate and identify the marketing issues associated with NDACs - Document the results of the project in a final report In recent years, the number of environmental permits mandating the use of natural draft aerial coolers to reduce noise has increased. Natural draft aerial cooler technology can potentially eliminate noise and improve operational energy efficiency. A broad group of applications could benefit from this technology, including natural gas, engine jacket water, auxiliary water, and engine lube oil cooling. With noise regulations and penalties becoming increasingly stringent, natural draft heat transfer technology is becoming more important. No organization has as yet fully investigated it. The technical and economic feasibility of NDACs were investigated for natural gas, engine jacket water, auxiliary water, and lube oil cooler applications.

Rimpel, Aaron, and Amy McCleney. PR-316-17200-R02 A Study of the Effects of Liquid Contamination on Seal Performance. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), July 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011734.

Full text
Abstract:
Liquid contamination in dry gas seals (DGS) can come from a variety of sources, including lube oil carryover and liquid dropout, due to the Joule-Thompson effect across the seal faces, which can cause DGS failure. The physical effect of liquids on DGS performance is a topic of limited understanding, and conflicting theories exist regarding liquid-induced failure mechanisms. While tests have been performed on DGS test rigs (primarily by seal OEMs), very little testing or analysis has been specifically aimed at studying the heat generation behind DGS behavior following liquid injection, and test results or conclusions have not been published for use in the industry. Therefore, this study develops a test rig and presents test results of a DGS in dry nitrogen at different supply pressures up to 1,000 psi, then intentionally introduce a liquid (light oil, up to ~3% liquid mass fraction) to measure any difference in performance that might indicate a possible failure mechanism. It was found that continuous injection of oil caused a distinct 2-8% increase in torque but no significant effect on seal temperature for the brief durations tested. In contrast, multiphase CFD predictions predicted generally higher torque values, in nitrogen only and with similar levels of oil injection than experiments, and a 3-6% increase in stationary ring temperatures. To the authors' knowledge, the CFD modeling approach used is a first of its kind for trying to study liquid contamination effects in a DGS, and further work is proposed to improve comparisons to the test data. This is research performed by the Gas Machinery Research Council with cofunding by PRCI.
