Abstract:
AbstractResearch shows that adhesions to the numbered treaties were of two types: “internal” and “external.” In an internal adhesion, a band living within the previously ceded area agreed to the terms of the treaty, and no new transfer of land was involved. In an external adhesion, a band living outside the previously ceded area agreed to the terms of the treaty, thus adding a previously unceded piece of territory to the treaty area. This distinction is essential to understanding the long-running Lubicon Lake dispute. From the federal government's point of view, all of northern Alberta was ceded in Treaty Eight; so the Lubicons, who live within this area, are entitled to make only an internal adhesion. In contrast, the Lubicons claim to live on unceded land and thus demand to make an external adhesion. Their claim to possess unextinguished aboriginal title to a specific tract of land is used to justify demands for compensation that would not be paid in the case of an internal adhesion.

Abstract:
Thomas Flanagan's article on adhesion to Indian treaties in this issue of the Canadian Journal of Law and Society is a bold foray into a virtually unexplored area of aboriginal rights. Although adhesions to most of the eleven Numbered Treaties in northern and western Canada were common, as Flanagan points out, not much attention has been paid to them. The matter is nonetheless of major importance for many aboriginal peoples, as was demonstrated by the decision of the Supreme Court of Canada last year that the Teme-Augama Anishnabai had surrendered their aboriginal title by adhesion to the 1850 Robinson-Huron Treaty. There can be little doubt that the issue is going to arise more frequently as other aboriginal peoples challenge the application of treaties to their ancestral lands.

Abstract:
The ongoing history of setter colonialism is inextricable from the infrastructures of energy and extraction that provide its material foundation. Addressing this inextricable relationship, this article explores how Indigenous solarities in Canada resist extractivism and generate conditions for just energy futures beyond settler colonialism through emergent solar infrastructures. Developing a preliminary theory of Indigenous solarities, this article anchors the author’s observations to Lubicon Cree energy justice activist Melina Laboucan-Massimo’s Sacred Earth Solar initiative and its two completed projects: the Piitapan Solar Project in Laboucan-Massimo’s home community of Little Buffalo, Alberta, Canada, which powers a community health center, and a partnership with the Tiny House Warriors. The Tiny House Warriors is a Secwepemcled movement to construct mobile tiny houses along the path of the Trans Mountain Expansion Pipeline Project. This article’s approach is methodologically informed by recent infrastructural thinking from theorists such as Lauren Berlant and Deborah Cowen who offer an expansive, relational understanding of infrastructure. It is also informed by thinkers such as Myles Lennon and Dagmar Lorenz-Meyer, who respectively see in solar energy infrastructures the possibilities to decolonize energy and to generate a feminist techno-ecological ethos. This article offers a brief account of the historical and contemporary relationship between settler colonialism and infrastructural development in Canada, before providing an overview of three mutually informing frameworks for preliminarily thinking through the materialization of Indigenous solarities: as media of resistance; as expressions of Indigenous feminism; and as expressions of Indigenous futurisms. The article concludes by scaling out from the context of Sacred Earth Solar’s emergent infrastructures of Indigenous solarities, connecting these efforts with larger movements of Indigenous resistance and renewable energy infrastructure initiatives. Ultimately, this article argues that Indigenous solarities signify myriad potentialities for reorienting our collective energy imaginaries from scarcity to abundance in ways that foreground Indigenous self-determination against and beyond extractivism.

Abstract:

Abstract The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) was the very first University to honor the Italian religious leader Chiara Lubich, with a honorary degree. In 2007, Chiara Lubich who shared with Henry cardinal Newman some very similar intuitions on the task of a University, founded on the basis of the charism the Church recognized in her the University Institute Sophia (IUS) in Tuscany (Italy). This was to be the very last initiative of her long life as the foundress of the Focolare Movement, Chiara Lubich wanted it to be an interdisciplinary institute bringing together life and studies in harmony. Now, after more than eight years of life, the author dresses a ‘state of the union’ of this University Institute, in the context of the crisis of the universitarian world today.

Abstract:
Abstract Starting from the analysis of a phenomenological reading of the parable of the Good Samaritan and arriving at the idea of the World Person in Chiara Lubich, this article will discuss two topics: union in difference and the model of the neighbor in the Gospel. For Christians this is the confirmation that the meeting with the stranger is possible. Christ founded a community that co-exists with the stranger. It is within this path that the intuition the figure of the World Person in Chiara Lubich arises. In the tension between interpretation and Truth, Lubich puts the question: was there anyone that went through the trial of doubt about the Truth, but has been able to create a new world? She says that was Jesus Forsaken, who opens up the possibility of differentiation without exclusion.

Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the knowledge of museology, anthropology and Native American studies. It is an analysis of the discourse that surrounded The Spirit Sings: Artistic Traditions of Canada's First Peoples, an exhibition prepared by the Glenbow in Calgary as the 'flagship' of the Olympic Arts Festival in 1988. After the Lubicon Indians of Northern Alberta called for a boycott of The Spirit Sings, in attempt to draw critical attention to their long outstanding lands claim, a large and heated debate ensued involving several disciplines, particularly anthropology and museology. Much of this debate took place in the print media, therefore a large body of material remains to be reviewed and studied. The intent of this thesis is to illustrate that the issue of museological representation of First Nations was one of the most central themes discussed in the discourse, but to argue that the major players dealt with this issue on only the most concrete level and therefore largely neglected to recognize that the issue of First Nation's representation was not just a concern over museum interpretation but more importantly an issue of the contested authenticity of national and cultural claims.

This study focuses on Chiara Lubich's thought on physical nature using phylosophical and theological key points. Italian, catholic and foundress of the Focolare Movement, Chiara s reflection is on nature starting from a Christian lifeworld in order to progressively interpret all of human and natural reality. After going through the historical roots and the basics of Chiara Lubich s spirituality, some mystical writings are presented, especially those concerning the Creation and nature. The theological depth of spirituality is, then, discussed by means of the aspects of Unity and Jesus Forsaken. The first can be understood as the unity of the Trinity, fruit of perichoresis but also as the presence of Christ in the community. The second, a particular understanding of the Cross of Christ. The relationship between these two aspects and their understanding that occur in the community through the action of the Spirit indicate that the very approach to the mystery of the paschal event is trinitarian. This is the theological source from where Lubich understands nature. The similarities between Chiara Lubich s thought and the franciscan tradition are presented. Her understanding of the Creation is expressed, then, in boaventurian style. This conception of the Trinity is experienced in a mystical form and forges a representation of the actual structure of the world. Her specific religious thought on nature is that the objects, relationships, natural events and the whole cosmos are conceived in a dynamism of the Trinity and have, thus, a Trinitarian ontology. This conception about nature is oriented to detect those connections of meaning: the trinitarian ontology as a heuristic method that evolves from the Trinitarian mystery to understand nature. Still, the religious thought of Lubich has characteristics of critical realism: scientific and religious knowledge express the Trinitarian structure of reality through their respective methods and awareness of their provisional status. Religion is also studied in its natural appearance by means of the cognitive sciences, which are interpreted within the same critical realist framework of the trinitarian ontology. Finally, a parallel is drawn between epistemic procedures of religion, as it can be seen in Lubich, and natural science reinforcing both the idea of the autonomy of religious thought and its positive epistemic status

This work deals with the Trinitarian anthropology, which underlies the practice of the dialogue performed by Chiara Lubich. Initially, this research demonstrates how the thought on dialogue falls on the whole of her spirituality. It is in the space between her peculiar understanding of the Gospel and the social praxis that comes from it, that she develops her vision and her dialogue experience. Secondly, this work offers a synthetic presentation of the main cardinal points of her spirituality in relation to her life experience, as an existential space in which the experience of God is revealed. Thirdly, this work deepens the understanding of unity and Jesus forsaken − understood as the synthesis of Christ's cross event − as the way to pass the threshold of God s communion life: He who is unity and trinity. Fourthly, it puts into dialogue the writings of Lubich with contemporary theologians, and philosophers. This dialogue reveals how her writings develop a vision of reality that can be defined as Trinitarian ontology. Emphasizing the idea of the Self as communion, according to lubichian point of view, the dynamics of the Trinitarian relationship must go into the determination of the Self as itself. Therefore, the unit with the other is intrinsic to the individual identity, that is, the human being fulfills himself/herself in the communion. Effectively, this means that the idea of the Self as Trinity leads in a Trinitarian anthropology. The categories of this anthropology are individualized on the basis of the communion of God who is unity and Trinity. Specifically, from the characteristics of the Trinitarian relationship of unity and distinction in God, this research identifies the characteristics of a Trinitarian way of life, whose incarnation and explanation in the history of mankind is dialogue. Finally, this research demonstrates that, for Lubich, dialogue is not an activity that adds itself to the many different dimensions of human life, but the way to relate with each other according to the model of the Trinity, that is, the very realization of the relationality self of man

Abstract:
Within an aero-engine bearing chamber oil is provided to components to lubricate and cool. This oil must be efficiently removed (scavenged) from the chamber to ensure it does not overheat and degrade. Bearing chambers typically contain a sump section with an exit pipe leading to a scavenge pump. In this paper a simplified geometry of a sump section is analysed computationally. Two experimental rigs have been utilised to support this work, although these results are not reported in the present paper. Early data from the experimental work is both qualitative (visualisation), and quantitative (conductance probe measurements of film height, analysis of images); but this work is still ongoing. The results indicate that for the chosen geometry there are three separate regimes of flow dependent on inlet flow conditions. To complement the experimental studies the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Fluent 6 has been applied to investigate typical flows found in aeroengine bearing chambers. Using the Volume of fluid (VOF) model of Hirt and Nichols, the CFD investigation has built from fundamental cases to computations for the experimental test rig configurations. This is the focus of the present paper. The first CFD case presented is a cylindrical vessel drained through a centrally placed cylindrical pipe. The geometry was chosen to match that of a published experimental study (Lubin and Springer [1]) and CFD data compares well with the available data. A full 3D model was required and a hexahedral mesh was implemented as it was found to provide a better discretisation. Results presented show that the volume of fluid approach is capable of modelling draining flows. Building on this, a three-dimensional CFD investigation into two phase flow in a double intake scavenge system similar to those found in aero-engines has been conducted. The paper shows that CFD is a promising approach to analysing bearing chamber scavenge flows and further, indicates methods of characterising behaviour.
