Abstract:

Funded pension systems around the world have long relied on relatively high and predictable long-term capital market returns. Yet these retirement systems confront a key challenge today, namely, how to deal with what appears to be persistently low returns on bonds and equities. For this reason, it will be prudent, and probably necessary, for insurers, plan sponsors, workers, retirees, and policymakers to take concrete steps to prepare for these lower long-term expected rates of return to retirement wealth. In fact, as we show in this volume, a persistent low-interest-rate economy will compel many to revisit how much they save, how they invest, and how long they can afford to live in retirement. Academics, policymakers, and industry leaders debate alternative strategies to cope with these challenges globally, as economic growth remains slow and low returns become the ‘new normal.’

Although Americans enjoy the convenience and economic benefits of the world's most advanced air transportation system, the future of the airline industry is clouded by capacity constraints, safety and environmental concerns, the consolidation of carriers, and, especially, airline labor relations under the Railway Labor Act. In this volume, William E. Thoms and Frank J. Dooley provide a comprehensive, authoritative overview of the history, the law, and the mechanics of modern airline labor bargaining. The authors trace the development of airline labor law, the representation and labor bargaining processes, and labor protection. The discussion is enhanced throughout by the inclusion of up-to-date case law. Other statutes which have an important impact on the employment relationship such as the Airline Deregulation Act are also considered in detail. Finally, the authors explore future issues which may affect relations between labor and management in the aviation industry. The book begins by reviewing the background of airline labor law, providing insights into the origins of airline regulation. The authors then provide a thorough discussion of the Railway Labor Act negotiating process, including the requirements of the Act, procedural steps in major and minor disputes, the role of the National Mediation Board, and mandatory bargaining subjects. Six areas related to the settlement of disputes are then studied in greater detail: the distinction between major and minor disputes; the role of air transport system boards of adjustment; the purpose of emergency boards; the related concepts of impasse, economic self-help, and reinstatement; strikes, boycotts, and injunctions under the Railway Labor Act; and restrictions on subcontracting. The next two chapters examine other statutes affecting airline labor relationships and the labor protection provisions of the Railway Labor Act. The authors conclude by looking at future trends in aviation labor law and the impact of issues such as drug testing, employee ownership plans, and mergers on airline labor relations. Ideal as a set of readings for courses on transportation law, labor economics, and transportation management, this book will also be of significant interest to regulators, union leaders, and attorneys specializing in transportation issues.

En el año 2020, el volumen de subproductos generados por la industria del aserrío llegó a 5,22 millones de metros cúbicos, como resultado de un flujo que se inició con el consumo de 15,68 millones de metros cúbicos sólidos con corteza (m3 scc) de trozos aserrables, para una producción de 7,87 millones de metros cúbicos sólidos sin corteza (m3 ssc) de madera aserrada. Los principales destinos de estos subproductos son la comercialización (68,6%) y el autoconsumo (29,2%). Los usos que se le da a estos subproductos son muy variados y no siempre son posibles de identificar por los propios aserraderos, puesto que los canales de distribución son complejos; sin embargo, en este documento se entregan cuadros con la evolución de los usos más reconocidos que tienen los subproductos madereros del aserrío, con el fin de avanzar hacia una mayor compresión de esta importante sub actividad del aserrío.

En esta edición, se ha agregado una serie de cuadros con la evolución de los usos más reconocidos que tienen los subproductos madereros del aserrío, con el fin de avanzar hacia una mayor compresión de esta importante actividad del aserrío, particularmente por su condición de generadora de biomasa para la generación directa o indirecta de energía.

This volume provides a concise introduction to the issues and debates regarding modern piracy, including naval operations, law, and diplomacy, and focuses on the recent surge of attacks off the coasts of Africa and Asia. In the past decade, the incidence of maritime piracy has exploded. The first three months of 2011 were the worst ever, with 18 ships hijacked, 344 crew taken hostage, and 7 crew members murdered. The four Americans on board the sailing vessel Quest were shot at point-blank range. The economic costs are also staggering, reaching $7 to $12 billion per year, as insurance costs skyrocket, ransoms double and then quadruple, and ships are forced to hire armed security for protection. Pirates operating off the Horn of Africa disrupt shipping traffic through the strategic Suez Canal, siphoning transit fees from an unstable Egypt, while the seizure of supertankers in the Indian Ocean underscores the vulnerability of the world's oil supply. Governments, private industry, and international organizations have mobilized to address the threat. This is the first volume to examine their work in developing naval strategy, international law and diplomacy, and industry guidelines to suppress contemporary maritime piracy. Abstract:

This volume examines how, why and with what success smaller European literatures – written in less well-known languages from less familiar traditions – endeavour through translation to reach international readers. It argues that prevailing nation- and world-centred theoretical approaches have failed to provide an adequate understanding of the international circulation of these literatures, and instead advocates and models a comparative, interdisciplinary approach that consistently tests theory against concrete experience and practice, and combines literary, historiographical and translation methodologies to produce a far more precise analysis of the strategies, motivations, obstacles and patterns that emerge as these literatures strive to be heard. Through case studies drawn from over thirteen national contexts from Scandinavia and the Low Countries to the Mediterranean and Central and Eastern Europe, the volume analyses how the international perceptions of these literatures are disadvantaged and distorted in theory, reception and industry practice, evaluates successes and failures as these literatures, through state and third-sector intervention and individual innovation, attempt to overcome their marginalization, and charts how the mould of our perception of these literatures might be broken.

Abstract:

El presente estudio caracteriza el mercado de la Madera Aserrada Estructural (MAE) utilizada en la construcción en Chile. El análisis de la oferta de MAE se basó en los antecedentes históricos que INFOR tiene de la industria del aserrío y en un muestreo representativo de 129 aserraderos, a los que se le aplicó una encuesta particular. El estudio de la demanda consideró encuestar a 132 empresas del sector de la construcción que realizan proyectos habitacionales y no habitacionales, y un análisis exhaustivo de las estadísticas de permisos de edificación del INE, lo que permitió caracterizar y cuantificar con precisión el uso y volumen de madera demandado por el sector construcción.

Este libro surge en el ámbito universitario con la vocación de ser un recurso docente que contribuya al aprendizaje de la disciplina de Monte e Industria para los alumnos del Grado de Ingeniería Forestal de la Universitat de Lleida. Aunque en los diferentes capítulos que componen el libro el lector puede encontrar un gran volumen de información, el objetivo del mismo pretende ir más allá de esta recopilación y quiere ser un punto de reflexión y debate de todos los condicionantes que influyen en el aprovechamiento de los productos de nuestros montes y, más concretamente, de los productos madereros. Hoy en día, precisamente, existe una gran sensibilidad social sobre este aspecto y se ha planteado en numerosas ocasiones interrogantes sobre las necesidades reales de estos aprovechamientos y del cómo deben ejecutarse. Castaño es una especie que alcanza los 35 m. de altura y posee una madera muy apreciada. En Chile se desarrolla bien en las regiones de Bío-Bío, Araucanía y Los Lagos principalmente, aunque se presentan plantaciones hasta la región del Maule. Se puede manejar con doble propósito (madera y frutos), con crecimientos de 4 a 20 m³/ha/año en rotaciones de 12 a 18 años como monte bajo y de 35 años para alcanzar un volumen cercano al metro cúbico por árbol de madera de calidad. Para la obtención de madera foliable, en nuestro país se asume una rotación de 30 años. Existe demanda para la industria de chapas decorativas, muebles, postes y otros.

El lenguaje, la comunicación, el idioma, el habla, la geopolítica, la economía, la ciencia, la tecnología: todo ello es fuente, causa y efecto del conocimiento. Y, entre líneas, aparece aquí una propuesta de definición transitoria, ya que es un proceso continuo. A esto hay que agregarle el uso que le damos a las palabras en un sentido metafórico en la conversación cotidiana, en las exposiciones formales o en los programas de televisión, que realmente no develan el conocimiento, sino que lo ocultan. Esto nos lleva a pensar autocríticamente sobre el uso que hacemos de la palabra. Asimismo, el concepto de humanidades, como piedra angular de la calidad educativa, se aprecia claramente en este volumen, en el que se expone los conceptos clave del Modelo Educativo Crítico con Enfoque de Competencias. Este modelo no deja de generar algunas polémicas que podrían debatirse en público, como la unificación de un modelo educativo o su crítica a las consecuencias de la próspera y ponderada industria del entretenimiento en el pensamiento crítico.
