Abstract:
The singular style of rhythm & blues (R&B) that emerged from New Orleans in the years after World War II played an important role in the development of funk. In a related development, the underlying rhythms of American popular music underwent a basic, yet generally unacknowledged transition from triplet or shuffle feel (12/8) to even or straight eighth notes (8/8). Many jazz historians have shown interest in the process whereby jazz musicians learned to swing (for example, the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra through Louis Armstrong's 1924 arrival in New York), but there has been little analysis of the reverse development – the change back to ‘straighter’ rhythms. The earliest forms of rock 'n' roll, such as the R&B songs that first acquired this label and styles like rockabilly that soon followed, continued to be predominantly in shuffle rhythms. By the 1960s, division of the beat into equal halves had become common practice in the new driving style of rock, and the occurrence of 12/8 metre relatively scarce. Although the move from triplets to even eighths might be seen as a simplification of metre, this shift supported further subdivision to sixteenth-note rhythms that were exploited in New Orleans R&B and funk.

Abstract:
Abstract In 1938 though spring of 1939, Webb’s band was on the road almost constantly, on one-nighters through the South and Midwest. In New York in August 1938, Webb’s band debuted at the Paramount Theater, a breakthrough engagement even for top Black bands. “Chick Webb and His Famous Orchestra, Featuring Ella Fitzgerald” was lit up on the theater’s huge marquis in Times Square. By this time, Webb and saxophonist/vocalist Louis Jordan did not get along, and Jordan left in early summer. Mario Bauza left after demanding more money for himself and the sidemen, knowing that Moe Gale’s agency was taking a good percentage of the band’s box office earnings. Webb was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital a few times for rest and treatment, with Dr. Ralph J. Young still his personal physician. Meanwhile, Webb and his band kept breaking through the “color line” at prestigious venues, including a long engagement at Manhattan’s Park Central Hotel. In March 1939, they were back at the Paramount, and attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Savoy Pavilion for the 1939 World’s Fair. In April and May, the band went back and forth to Boston to play at the Southland Cafe, where the band’s radio broadcasts show how powerfully Webb still played, even as his health was failing. In New York City in late May 1939, the band gave what would be their last performances at the Savoy Ballroom and the Apollo Theater.

Abstract:
Pruitt photographed Oscar West on a wooden barrel. A young man, West wears a worn jacket. He holds a broom; a tweed cap rests on his knee. He is stoop shouldered. With confidence and comfort, he looks at the camera. This Black man is photographed in a white man’s studio, the same setting, where white people—the powerful as well as struggling white yeoman farm families—are photographed. This happens during the Jim Crow era in a separate-but-unequal town where Blacks were restricted in where and how they could eat, drink from a water fountain, shop, see movies, stay in a hotel, or have access to a public restroom. In 1987, in an uncatalogued archive, a print of the image was discovered. It was made by a large format camera with an 8x10-inch glass plate negative. Thirteen years later, people who knew West, including his son Oscar Lang, who never had seen the image, spoke about West, a janitor and caretaker for children of his employer at Brown-Buick Cadillac Company. The photograph compares favorably with studio portraiture of Martin Chambi of Peru, Mike Disfarmer of Arkansas, Seydou Keita of Mali, Doris Ulmann of New York, Richard Samuel Roberts of South Carolina, and Jno. Trilica of Texas.
