Abstract:
One hundred items of 60 talcum powders and 40 body lotions were examined for their total aerobic bacterial, coliform and fungal counts. We also carried out anaerobic bacterial counts for talcum powder as well as tests to detect some potentially hazardous bacteria in all tested samples. Talcum powders were more heavily contaminated with bacteria than body lotions. More than 60% of the tested body lotions contained no viable bacteria or less than 100 C.F.U./gm, while 35% of the talcum powders contained this level. Five per percent of the talcum powder were contaminated with 104 C.F.U. /gm and none of the body lotions were contaminated to that extent. No coliforms were recovered from any of the body lotions, while 3.3% of the talcum powder examined contained coliforms in the range of 250-300 C.F.U/gm.Staphylococcus Spp. were detected in one sample of both talcum powders and body lotions. Two samples of talcum powder contained E. coli. Neither talcumpowder nor body lotions showed fungal counts. Also no talcum powder showed the presence of anaerobic bacterial counts.

Abstract:
Context: Caprine milk has beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, thus the potential to be developed as a topical formulation against the skin-aging process. However, the influence of temperature during topical formulation storage from caprine milk must be explored. Aims: To analyze the physical stability and heavy metal contents of skin lotion from caprine milk, yogurt, and kefir. Methods: All lotions were storage at different conditions, such as 4°C, 25°C without light exposure (LE), 25°C with light exposure, and 33°C for 12 months. The characteristics of color, aroma, separation, viscosity, pH level, and heavy metals were determined periodically. Results: Yogurt lotions showed more maintained color, aroma, and separation under different storage conditions than milk and kefir lotions. The viscosity of all samples was relatively stable, with a minor reduction at 33°C of temperature storage. The longer duration of storage reduced the pH level for all lotions. Heavy metals were slightly detected in safe range values. Conclusions: This study concludes that the physical characteristics of lotions made from caprine milk, yogurt, and kefir were relatively stable during the different storage conditions, and these lotions are proposed as a safe topical formulation for skin application.

ABSTRACTIn previous research, ethanolic extract of pineapple peel (EEPP) has activity as a sunscreen because of the content of flavonoids. EEPP can be formulated in the form of creams and lotions to facilitate use on the skin. This study aims to evaluate the physical chemistry characteristics of EEPP creams and lotions. Creams and lotions were made in 3 formulas based on variations in FI extract concentrations (15.0%), FII (17.5%), FIII (20.0%), base controls and positive controls (preparations on the market). The cream obtained was evaluated for physical chemical characteristics including organoleptic, homogeneity, adhesion and dispersion, viscosity, pH and SPF values which were analyzed descriptively. cream with varying concentrations of green, the distinctive smell of pineapple, homogeneous and in accordance with the pH of the skin. Increasing the concentration of EEPP in the preparation has an effect on increasing viscosity, adhesion but decreasing the dispersion. Whereas the lotion shows greenish color, aromatic odor and semisolid texture and is easily applied. The increase in EEPP in lotion affects the increase in pH, adhesion, but decreasing the dispersion. Keywords: Creams, lotions, sunscreen, pineapple fruit skin

Abstract:
A análise de espécies indicadoras mostrou que Chironomus sp., Ablabesmyia sp.1, Ablabesmyia sp.2, Djalmabatista sp., Fittkauimyia sp., Labrundinia sp. indicaram o remanso, e Paratendipes sp., Polypedilum sp.2, Pentaneura sp., Rheotanytarsus sp.1, Corynoneura sp.2, Cricotopus sp.2, Lopescladius sp., Nanocladius sp.2, Parametriocnemus sp. e Thienemanniella sp. indicaram a corredeira.
The present study had the aim to test the effects of the substrate complexity and of the mesohabitat (pools and riffles) on the richness, abundance and composition of Chironomidae (Diptera) in streams. The experiment took place in 12 streams of Central Brazil. In each stream, two plastic trays were put in each one of the two studied mesohabitats (pool and riffle), one with higher complexity substrate and one with lower complexity substrate. These substrates were kept in the streams for 20 days. The effects of substrate complexity and of mesohabitat were not significative neither on the standarized richness nor on the abundance. On the other hand, the effect of mesohabitat was significative on the faunistic composition. The first axis of DCA (33% of variability) separated cleanly the fauna in pools from those in riffles. The indicator species analysis showed that Chironomus sp., Ablabesmyia sp.1, Ablabesmyia sp.2, Djalmabatista sp., Fittkauimyia sp., Labrundinia sp. indicated pools, and Paratendipes sp., Polypedilum sp.2, Pentaneura sp., Rheotanytarsus sp.1, Corynoneura sp.2, Cricotopus sp.2, Lopescladius sp., Nanocladius sp.2, Parametriocnemus sp. and Thienemanniella sp. indicated riffles.

Abstract:
Genetic differentiation among populations is a frequently observed phenomenon in plant species. Such differentiation often depends on the degree of isolation between populations but also, where environmental selection pressures are strong, can lead to local adaptation and the production of ecotypes. Severe climatic conditions and heterogeneity prevailing in high elevation habitats are known to induce ecotypic and chromosome differentiation. In this thesis the patterns of population differentiation have been studied in two widespread species belonging to two polyploid complexes, lotus alpinus (d. C. ) scleicher and dactylis glomerata l. In the vanoise region of the alps in the vanoise, two chromosome entities of l. Alpinus (diploid between 2000 and 3000 m and tetraploid between 1800 and 2500 m) may occur in parapaty or in sympatry. The autotetraploid origin of the alpine tetraploid and gene exchange with its related diploid and also l. Corniculatus cultivars introduced into this region have been documented based on genetic (caryology, allozymes and cpdna variation), morphological, and phenological characteristics. The alpine dactylis (d. Gl. Subsp. Reichenbachii), previously described in the swiss and italian alps was observed in the vanoise where it is confined to xeric, dolomitic south-facing alpine meadows above 2100 m. Morphological, phenological and allozyme studies indicate that gene flow occurs between individuals of this alpine entity and individuals of the subspecies glomerata, which is widely distributed in the region. A reciprocal transplant experiment showed a selective advantage to alpine dactylis which produced relatively more seeds in the severe habitat. In combination with differences in flowering time between the two subspecies, such differences in fertility may explain the maintenance of the two interfertile subspecies as distinct entities in the same region

Abstract:
Brasilense-lotier transforme

Vaz, Pedro Jorge Gonçalves. "Long-term effects of portuguese forest fires on morphology and aquatic habitat structure of lotic ecosystems." Doctoral thesis, Universidade de Évora, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10174/10811.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates long-term effects of forest fires on morphology and functioning of Portuguese streams via burned wood. Wildfires influenced the landscape dynamics across three regions examined, towards increases in shrublands encroaching into previously forested areas. Large wood amounts within 27 streams were low and are expected to decline in the future owing to wildfire. Likewise, wildfire was promoting wood lacking structural complexity, thus likely reducing habitat heterogeneity that improves conditions for aquatic organisms. The effect of fire providing wood with greater diameter will increase its probability for stream functions such as pool formation. However, this functionality may not persist because most of this wood was decayed and less stable in the channel. It is critical for aquatic communities if fire-derived wood falls directly into the river or if it is previously conditioned for some time on the forest floor; Efeitos a longo prazo dos fogos florestais na morfologia e estrutura do habitat em ecossistemas lóticos de Portugal ### Esta tese avalia os efeitos a longo prazo dos fogos florestais na morfologia e funcionamento de rios portugueses através da madeira ardida.

Abstract:
The objective was to evaluate the agronomic potential, namely establishment, winter survival, biomass production, and nutritive value of novel forage species with a high content of condensed tanins or sesquiterpene lactones grown in pure stand or in mixture with two forage grasses, timothy (Phleum pratense L.) and meadow fescue (Festuca pratense Huds.), under pasture management in four climatic regions of Quebec. The field experiment took place in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue (Montreal region), Saint-Augustin-de- Desmaures (Capitale-Nationale region), La Pocatière (Bas-Saint-Laurent region), and Normandin (Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region), over two years (2016 and 2017). At all study sites in 2017, chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) and birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) had satisfactory yields compared to alfalfa at all sites, while sainfoin (Onobrychis vicifolia Scop.) did not perform well. Sainfoin had the highest content of condensed tanins (average of 10.7 g kg-1 dry matter) and moderately and slowly degradable proteins.

Abstract:
This research focuses on the thorny problem of access to safe drinking water and management of water resources in the context of Ouagadougou and Bobo -Dioulasso, the two largest cities in Burkina Faso. The issue of drinking water and sanitation which is also part of the objectives of the UN Millennium Agenda for Development, leads in these cities and more generally in developing countries, to the establishment of programs to facilitate adequate access of the population to the resource. Distribution, and access to water in cities in constant demographic and spatial growth, are proving increasingly problematic; this reality is partly due to rural exodus and households poverty. The Management framework established by the National Office for Water and Sanitation ( ONEA) involving more or less different local actors, hardly meets new organizational and structural challenges arising from the overall process. The many challenges that accompany the management issues are both political, technical, legal and socio cultural. By analyzing the daily realities of access to water resources, this thesis highlights the achievements and limitations of the management system. It also aims at informing inequalities due to the nature of management models studied, through strategies developed by water managers, and peoples living in both cities . These inequalities are obvious in collective dwellings or common courtyards, and in fragile habitats in peripheries. Difficulties in having access to water are less related to scarcity than adaptation policy management, and lack of financial resources

Abstract The everyday lives of contemporary youth are awash with chemicals to boost pleasure, energy, sexual performance, appearance, and health. What do pills, drinks, sprays, powders, and lotions do for youth? What effects are youth seeking? The ChemicalYouth ethnographies presented here, based on more than five years of fieldwork conducted in Amsterdam, Brooklyn, Cayagan de Oro, Paris, Makassar, Puerto Princesa, and Yogyakarta, show that young people try out chemicals together, compare experiences, and engage in collaborative experiments. ChemicalYouth: Navigating Uncertainty: In Search of the Good Life makes a case for examining a broader range of chemicals that young people use in their everyday lives. It focuses not just on psychoactive substances—the use of which is viewed with concern by parents, educators, and policymakers—but all the other chemicals that young people use to boost pleasure, moods, vitality, appearance, and health, purposes for using chemicals that have received far less scholarly attention. It takes the use of chemicals as situated practices that are embedded in social relations and that generate shared understandings of efficacy. More specifically, it seeks to answer the question: how do young people balance the benefits and harms of chemicals in their quest for a good life?

Abstract:
Abstract We present a review of the Low Temperature Ion Source (LoTIS): its aims, design, performance data collected to date, and focused spot size projections when integrated with a FIB. LoTIS provides a Cs+ beam that has been measured to have high brightness (> 107Am-2sr-1eV-1), and low-energy spread (< 0.5 eV). These source characteristics enable a prediction of subnm focused spot sizes. A FIB with the capabilities enabled by LoTIS would be well-suited to addressing FIB failure analysis tasks such as nanomachining, circuit edit, and site-specific SIMS.
