Abstract:
Studying at schools and Universities of Education has changed since the beginning of March 2020. Due to requirements to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, the course of study had to be temporarily changed completely to distance learning, which demanded a high degree of adaptation and change motivation from teaching staff and students. One challenge for teachers was to provide efficient online learning with meaningful activities in such a way that the students do not lose focus on their learning goals, their motivation is kept up and communication is maintained. In order to offer schools, teachers and parents appropriate support for learning at home, during and after the corona crisis, a rich online platform was developed by lecturers of the University of Education. As an illustration, a practical adoption is shown of how to transform a course originally planned face-to-face to a blended learning version. The used combination of the elements -flipped classroom video, MOOC, recording, chat and an online portal as repository- are used for the course “Computational Thinking with a single-board computing device” will be presented. As a further initiative, a model which originates from an Erasmus+ project will be introduced. The objective of this model, the Educational Pyramid Structure, is to bring tools and methods into the education system quickly, with the greatest possible outcome and sustainability. In this context the use of Learning Flips will be displayed, which are to be produced at all levels of the school system (teacher educators, students, teachers, pupils). Centrally, this contribution will outline the overarching online platform and the results of a study conducted as part of the research project "Learning despite corona".

Abstract:
Purpose A question of interest is whether online social networks are effective in promoting behavioral changes and weight loss. The purpose of this paper is to examine the contagion effect of an online buddy network on individuals’ self-monitoring behavior. Design/methodology/approach This study collects data from an online weight-loss community and constructs an online buddy network. This study compares the effects of the network structure of the buddy network and the actor attributes when predicting self-monitoring performance by employing the auto-logistic actor attribute models. Findings This study confirms the contagion effect on weigh-in behavior in the online buddy network. The contagion effect is significantly predictive when controlling for actor attribute and other network structure effects. Originality/value There is limited evidence that one’s weight-related behavior can be affected by online social contacts. This study contributes to the literature on peer influence on health by examining the contagion effect on weight-related behavior between online buddies. The findings can assist in designing peer-based interventions to harness influence from online social contacts for weight loss.

Abstract:
This paper investigates a dual-channel supply chain in which a manufacturer sells the product via an offline retailer or online store. The manufacturer sets the wholesale and online price, and the retailer decides the retail price with the retailer’s fairness preference and consumer’s online channel preference. Through investigating the combined impacts of fairness preference and channel preference on the enterprises’ operational strategies, this paper obtains some meaningful results. If a manufacturer thinks over the fairness preference, he decreases the wholesale price to mitigate a loss of retailer and benefit the supply chain design. The manufacturer intends to set up the online channel with a lower acceptance as the fairness preference grows. However, the gains from enhanced online channel acceptance cannot compensate for the manufacturer’s loss by the fairness effect that benefits the retailer. Moreover, the manufacturer cannot neglect the retailer’s fairness preference generating a “lose-lose” case for both members.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives To begin development of online grocery store design features that could support healthful food purchasing by shoppers who are trying to lose weight, using a Value Proposition Design approach to product development. Methods One-on-one interviews were conducted with adults who reported they were trying to lose weight (n = 25) to gain insight into their shopping needs and perceptions. Interview results were used to identify four potential online grocery shopping features that could support healthful food purchase decisions. Prototypes were developed for each feature, and one-on-one interviews were conducted with a different sample of adults who reported trying to lose weight (n = 25) to gather feedback on the prototypes. Results Based on customer needs identified through insight interview, the following four potential online grocery store features were devised and prototyped by the research team: 1) Nutritional quality rating of shopping cart items purchased, with suggestions for improvement provided; 2) Menu planning support tool to provide menu and recipe suggestions tailored to individual preferences; 3) An interactive virtual grocery aisle designed as a fun way to discover healthy products and meal ideas; and 4) A healthy shopping preference option to opt into a shopping experience that prioritizes the display and advertising of foods that align with the shopper's health and nutrition goals. Results from feedback interviews indicated that the menu planning support tool and the healthy shopping preference option were both highly positively rated and believed to be effective in helping support healthy food choices by most participants. Conclusions Further development and evaluation work is warranted for the online grocery store features found to be most highly rated. This study illustrates application of a design thinking approach to developing nutrition promotion related products/programs. Funding Sources University of Minnesota JB Hawley Faculty Research Award.

Abstract:
Unlike the traditional “lone ranger” method for online course design—a method that hinges on individual faculty efforts, expertise, and knowledge—a team-based approach (TBA) harnesses the collective intelligence of several experts to design effective online learning experiences. Using learning design (LD) as a conceptual framework, this article describes the experience of a public institution in using a team-based approach to produce a large number of online courses for degree programs. After establishing the relevance of a team-based approach, the author discusses the premises that underpin the model, in terms of process, faculty relationship, and quality assurance. Building on these premises, a cyclical backward design process is described which is intended to (1) clarify course-learning outcomes and align course content, (2) determine acceptable evidence of students' learning, and (3) plan the learning experience. The article is concluded with a few insights and lessons learned from the institutional experience.

Abstract:
This study addresses how language interacts with the erotic and ‘place’ (our socially understood surroundings) in an online, text-only, mostly linguistic environment to create an erotic atmosphere, and how eroticised atmosphere relates to linguistically driven sexual subject formation. Analysis focuses on extracts from a conversation in which public erotic discussions unfold between participants who are (ostensibly) men who desire men. A ‘room’ spatiality is continually performed, sometimes relying upon idealised images of ‘erotic oases’ from the offline world to build an erotic atmosphere. These offline erotic oases are places of ‘deviance’ characterised by semi-public sex (e.g. parks, public washrooms, and saunas). This type of atmosphere is contested by some participants while others embrace it. Analysis demonstrates that eroticism, spatiality, and language adapt to one another along a reformulating path. This suggests that a more nuanced understanding of language and the erotic depends on spatial investigations as much as discursive theory.

Abstract:
Although scholars of video game enjoyment propose that games are meant to present a reasonable and appropriate challenge to players, not enough research has tested the effects of difficulty on enjoyment or the psychological mechanisms driving this relationship. In an experimental study involving college students (N = 121) playing a casual online tower defense game, we tested the relationship between difficulty and enjoyment and the possible mediating roles played by competency, as specified by self-determination theory, and challenge-skill balance, as specified by flow theory. Path analysis suggested that feelings of competency contribute to enjoyment by helping players obtain a balance between challenge and skill, and that competency is enhanced when players are assigned an easier game mode. This paper then addresses implications for theory, game design, and laboratory studies.

Abstract:
The so-called «international» or «jihadi» terrorist recruitment and online propaganda are paramount contemporary issues. The Islamic State built an organised and efficient propaganda apparatus at global level. Outside its territories, it relies upon a network calling on vulnerable individuals to turn into foreign terrorist fighters or lone wolves. This paper analyses the main targets, means and effects of terrorist propaganda and recruitment. In the concluding remarks, the author argues that a change of the current preventive paradigm is necessary. The broader goal is to restore mutual trust between marginalised and/or radicalised individuals, society, and the State.

Abstract:
Automated seizure detection in a home environment has been of increased interest the last couple of decades. The electrocardiogram is one of the signals that is suited for this application. In this paper, a new method is described that classifies different heart rate characteristics in order to detect seizures from temporal lobe epilepsy patients. The used support vector machine classifier is trained on data from other patients, so that the algorithm can be used directly from the start of each new recording. The algorithm was tested on a dataset of more than 918[Formula: see text]h of data coming from 17 patients containing 127 complex partial and generalized partial seizures. The algorithm was able to detect 81.89% of the seizures, with on average 1.97 false alarms per hour. These results show a strong drop in the number of false alarms of more than 50% compared to other heart rate-based patient-independent algorithms from the literature, at the expense of a slightly higher detection delay of 17.8s on average.

Technological developments brought many changes in the child's development. One form is the technological development of online games. The use of online games is more likely to give a negative influence on the development of a child's social-emotional. This is evident from research conducted on children who use the online game active in Kebun Sayur RT 05/RW 02, Bangko in hypothesis testing, the regression equation is Y = 48.553348 + 0,2092501X seen that the influence of online gaming (variable x ), the development of a child's social-emotional. (variable y) Kebun Sayur RT 05 / RW 02, Bangko calculated using simple linear regression got simply Fhitung> Ftabel or 5.0124> 4.196, then Ho is rejected. Thus a significant difference between playing online games against the development of a child's social-emotional. in Kebun Sayur RT 05/RW 02, Bangko. Cyberspace offers ample opportunity where gender and age can lose their meaning with the influence of ageism. Online self-representation usually begins with a created gendered avatar followed by age identity. Empirical social data comprising surveys, random comments, and texts of 127 respondents were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The analysis showed that anonymity was assumed differently with eight possible reasons as gender was transferred online. Ageism experience was also identified differently by both male and female. A profile on online self-representation for cyber forensics was subsequently established based on gender and age identity in addition to avatars. The findings have some forensic use as avatars layered with anonymity and ageism which facilitate some degree of self-disclosure due to similarity in belief, values, and attitudes to the users. The presence of "new media” such as mobile phones, internet and social media has made major changes in the delivery of messages and communication patterns in children and adolescents. On the other hand, media can make children and teenagers lose their identity, and worsen the morality of children and adolescents. Based on preliminary studies, the negative effects of the "new media” are among the addicted children of online games, addicted to social media, children's time to play mobile phones, children become victims of sexual harassment through the media, the emergence of conflict due to postings on social media, and so on. Some of the roles that school counselors can do to anticipate the emergence of a moral crisis in children and adolescents are; 1) improving skills in utilizing the presence of "new media"; 2) working with teachers and parents in monitoring the use of “new media”, in the form of frequency, duration and content; 3) educating positive internet usage; 4) studying counseling strategies to deal with emerging problems, addiction to onlie games, pornography, bullying and hate speech. Keywords: Role, Counselor, Moral Crisis, "Baru" Media

Abstract:
This study aimed to describe the challenges of higher education in implementing online learning during the pandemic Covid-19 outbreak. This study was a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected from 408 students and 20 Lectures from 6 public universities and 6 private universities in Java, Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku, by filling out online questionaires and in-depth interviews via social media. The process of data analysis was data reduction, identifying themes, mapping interrelationships between themes, and concluding findings The results of data analysis showed that there were two main challenges, both for lecturers and students. First, limited resources, such as electronic devices (laptops/smartphones/others), learning resources, electricity, and internet connections. Second, lack of knowledge/skills on how to use the online learning media, finding and/or providing learning resources, managing online learning, providing online measuring tools, and carrying out online assessments. This condition has the greatest impact on students from low economic families, and who live in areas with limited access to learning facilities, such as electricity, and internet connections. Most of them lose learning opportunities because of these limitations. Third, the difficulty of time management during the online learning period.

Abstract:
Online learning is a basic need of education in the 21st century. The benefits of online learning are felt in the continuity of education during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to examine the impact of online learning on the learning motivation of Junior High School (SMP) students. The results of the research discussion indicate that online learning has advantages, namely 1) as a medium to encourage independent learning; 2) as an effort to modernize the concept of education in the 21st century; 3) increasing the intensity of the interaction between teachers and students; 3) allows for an interaction that is not limited to space and time, and 4) meaningful learning. The impact of online learning on student learning motivation tends to be negative due to the unpreparedness of various parties, including teachers, parents, students, and schools. Early adolescents who need direct guidance, direction, and motivation must lose control due to reduced direct interaction with the teacher. The monotonous implementation of online learning, lack of direction and supervision, pressure for students to study from home, and low teacher innovation are the main causes of decreased learning motivation due to online learning.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to determine the level of online fraud offending within an Australian jurisdiction and how to best apply resources to combat it. Design/methodology/approach Empirical data were provided by an Australian law enforcement agency, and qualitative responses were obtained from the parties involved in the crimes themselves (the victims, the offenders and the nominated law enforcement agency). Findings Although there was variance between the ages of the online fraud victims, there was a slightly higher chance of an older member of the population falling victim to an offender than that of a younger person. The number of a particular gender reporting an instance of cybercrime in a given area can be higher if the total number of participants in that area was also high. Older victims were more likely to lose larger amounts of money to online fraud. Furthermore, it was found that when the non-gender identifiable data were removed, this increased to over 80 per cent. Originality/value Existing literature on online fraud and criminal offending generally focused on the quantitative aspects of measuring offending, which does not give an indication into the “why” component of the study: why are these offences being committed; why do these offenders pick particular victims; and why do the victims fall for such ruses? In this paper, the authors combined the qualitative responses obtained from those parties involved in the crimes themselves (the victims, the offenders and the nominated law enforcement agency) with a quantitative examination of the crime figures provided by an Australian law enforcement agency.

Abstract:
Online Game users continue to grow from year to year and therefore internet service providers (ISPs) must provide stable and fast internet quality. The Bandwidth requirements of online Games must be supported by internet networks that support the speed and stability of the internet connection. When using online Games sometimes the connection is bad, so it makes a condition called lagging. Then make the online Game avatars do not move or the traffic is stuck. This makes online Game players lose to enemies because, when the online Game avatar is not moving it will be easy for the enemy to shoot dead. Based on this, an analysis of the research needs of online Game Bandwidth speed needs to be done so, that internet service providers (ISPs) can divide how much speed or Bandwidth to the Game needs so, that online Game users feel comfortable, safe without feeling any slow or lagging conditions. Abstract:
Purpose Gamification elements have been increasingly used in online weight-loss communities to help users lose weight. The purpose of this paper is to systemically examine whether and how social interactions influence users’ continued participation in the context of online weight-loss competitions (OWCs). Design/methodology/approach This study empirically investigated sustained involvement in OWCs using a Cox proportional hazards model. Additionally, the research utilized a text-mining technique to identify various types of social support and explored their roles in sustaining participation behavior in OWCs. Findings Community response both within and outside OWCs positively influence users’ continued participation in OWCs. Moreover, whereas emotional support and companionship received within OWCs have a greater impact on users’ continued participation than informational support received within OWCs, informational support received outside OWCs has a greater impact on users’ continued participation than emotional support and companionship received outside OWCs. Originality/value This paper highlights users’ social needs in OWC engagement and provides empirical evidence on how different types and sources of social support influence continued participation behavior in OWCs. The research additionally provides management implications for online health community service providers.

AbstractPurposeThere has been a recent increase in interest in chia seeds as a growing number of people try to observe a healthy lifestyle, particularly healthy eating habits. Given the increasing popularity of chia seeds in Hungary as well, we performed a study to examine what information on chia seeds is available on Hungarian websites.Materials and MethodsWe conducted a systematic, qualitative content analysis to examine the first 200 Hungarian results of a Google search on “chia seeds”.ResultsWe identified five main topics: 1. general information, 2. effects/side-effects, 3. modes of preparation, 4. target audience, and 5. tone of the article. Sometimes information (especially on the effects) was presented in a sensationalist manner, and some claims were not scientifically well-founded, but rather based on subjective opinion.ConclusionsIn the online media, chia seed consumption was mainly recommended for those who are trying to lose weight and for diabetics, even though there is currently no proof that it can improve the condition of such people. Further studies are needed to demonstrate and confirm claims related to the beneficial effects of the chia seed. Until this has been done, readers of Google-search results – especially those who have a health condition – should be cautious about certain statements published on non-scientific websites.

Studies have shown social support can promote weight loss, specifically when support is received online through forums on weight loss websites. The goal of this study was to explore the experiences of individuals using support forums on weight loss websites. We conducted a content analysis on web-administered survey responses from members of two weight loss websites ( N = 340). The findings revealed three major themes: (1) receiving advice, strategies, and mantras are helpful with weight loss; (2) support forums provide a nonjudgmental environment for losing weight; and (3) receiving social support and inspiration from someone similar is helpful with weight loss. These findings suggest online support forums can benefit individuals attempting to lose weight by offering a place to receive nonjudgmental social support from other similar users.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse users’ attitudes towards online information retrieval and processing. The aim is to identify the characteristics of information that better capture the attention of the users and to provide evidence for the information retrieval behaviour of the users by studying online photo archives as information units. Design/methodology/approach – The paper analyses a unique quasi-experimental data of photo archive access counts collected by the author from an online newspaper. In addition to access counts of each photo in 500 randomly chosen photo galleries, characteristics of the photo galleries are also recorded. Survival (duration) analysis is used in order to analyse the factors affecting the share of the photo gallery viewed by a certain proportion of the initial number of viewers. Findings – The results of the survival analysis indicate that users are impatient in case of longer photo galleries; they lose attention faster and stop viewing earlier when gallery length is uncertain; they are attracted by keywords and initial presentation and they give more credit to specific rather than general information categories. Practical implications – Results of the study offer applicable implications for information providers, especially on the online domain. In order to attract more attention, entities can engage in targeted information provision by taking into account people’s attitude towards information retrieval and processing as presented in this paper. Originality/value – This paper uses a unique data set in a quasi-experimental setting in order to identify the characteristics of online information that users are attracted to.

Abstract:
Offering online programs that target men and women separately, Weight Watchers communicates, represents, and manipulates gender in its program marketing and materials. In this article, I demonstrate how Weight Watchers engages aspects of hegemonic masculinity as they endeavor to construct “masculine” versus “feminine” dieting through contrasting depictions of food, the body, and technology use. By analyzing the difference in the weight loss experiences that Weight Watchers Online promises, I argue that limited types of self are made available to women and men. Weight Watchers portrays female dieters on a difficult but actualizing and empowering journey toward a new and better self. Conversely, Weight Watchers depicts male clients losing weight easily, even effortlessly, but retaining a stable and immutable masculine selfhood throughout the process. This constraint upon self-making exposes how patriarchy subordinates even the men assumed to profit the most from its power, as the male weight loss promise withholds transformative potentials.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective: To introduce rapid-sampling microdialysis for the early detection of adverse metabolic changes in tissue at risk during aneurysm surgery. Methods: A microdialysis catheter was inserted under direct vision into at-risk cortex at the start of surgery. This monitoring was sustained throughout the course of the operation, during which intraoperative events, for example, temporary arterial occlusion or lobe retraction, were precisely documented. A continuous online flow of dialysate was fed into a mobile bedside glucose and lactate analyser. This comprises flow-injection dual-assay enzyme-based biosensors capable of determining values of metabolites every 30 seconds. Results: Eight patients underwent clipping or wrapping of intracranial aneurysms and were monitored. Time between events and detection: 9 minutes. Mean change in metabolite value ± standard deviation: temporal lobe retraction lactate, +656 ± 562 µmol/L (n = 7, P< 0.05); glucose, -123 ± 138 µmol/L (n = 6, P = 0.08). Glucose intravenous bolus infusion glucose, +512 ± 244 µmol/L (n = 5, P< 0.01); peak at mean time after bolus, 16 minutes. Temporary proximal clip lactate, +731 ± 346 µmol/L (n = 6, P< 0.01); glucose, -139 ± 96 µmol/L (n = 5, P< 0.05); mean clip time, 8.6 minutes. Conclusion: The technique detects changes 9 minutes after intraoperative events occur (limited only by probe-to-sensor tubing length and dialysate flow rate). This provides reliable information to the surgeon and anesthetist promptly. It is a useful method for monitoring glucose and lactate in dialysate, particularly when rapid, transient changes in brain analyte levels need to be determined and the alternative offline methodology would be inadequate.

Abstract:
This paper explores the integration of different social fields within the German Energy Transition (Energiewende) discourse in the election year 2013 by analysing the hyperlink structures online. Energiewende describes the fundamental transition from non-renewable energy to sustainable sources. This goal is both ambitious and controversial. Numerous stakeholders try to make their voices and interests heard and as such politics has to both disseminate and collect information in order to include all relevant groups from different social fields in the political process. This discourse is also visible online. By analysing the hyperlink structures we are able to see the attention distribution of different actor groups in the network. This study shows that most actors tend to link within their own social field and do not aim for a more integrated public sphere. Especially political actors appear to be lone warriors who neither look left or right and mostly link within their own party and ignore other actors. Whereas social field as the media or public administration are relevant within the network we find that scientific actors are ignored by all fields, except for their own.

AbstractWe examine first language (L1) attrition among 30 L1 Spanish – L2 English speakers living in the United Kingdom. We also tested 30 recently-arrived Spaniards to the UK as a baseline. We present several key findings: 1) attrition fluctuates over time and does not affect all individuals equally; 2) entropy can explain said fluctuation of attritional affects over time such that while length of residence and age of arrival may affect the depth of attrition, how often one is exposed to her native language, how often she uses it and for how long each day, who her friends are, and to which types of input she is regularly exposed, seemingly aid in the maintenance or loss of linguistic knowledge; 3) though offline scalar interpretations among bilinguals were predicted by canonical sociolinguistic variables, the online data revealed an overall insensitivity to pragmatic violations. Thus, offline and online methods combine to be more explanatory regarding the comprehension and processing of implicature generating quantifiers.

Abstract:
Background: Every year, more than six million people lose a loved one through suicide. These bereaved by suicide are at relatively high risk for mental illnesses including suicide. The social stigma attached to suicide often makes it difficult to talk about grief. Participating in online forums may be beneficial for the bereaved by suicide, but it is unknown what they communicate in these forums. Aims: What do the bereaved by suicide communicate in online forums? We examined which self-help mechanisms, grief reactions, and experiences with health-care services they shared online. Method: We conducted a content analysis of 1,250 messages from 165 members of two Dutch language forums for the bereaved by suicide. Results: We found that sharing personal experiences featured most prominently in the messages, often with emotional expressions of grief. Other frequently used self-help mechanisms were expressions of support or empathy, providing advice, and universality (recognition), while experiences with health-care services featured only occasionally. Compared with previous studies about online forums for somatic illnesses, the bereaved by suicide communicated more personal experiences and engaged much less in chitchat. Conclusion: Online forums appear to have relevant additional value as a platform for talking about grief and finding support.

With the increasing expansion of Healthcare Information Systems, platforms for interoperability and monitoring systems have become vital tools to support the clinical practice. Under this scenario, the creation of knowledge in real-time to feed decision support tools is essential. INTCare is one the solutions that adapts the way that information is gathered and processed in order to obtain that knowledge. Once new information arrives, it triggers the ETL (extract, transform, load) procces enabling real-time processes like data mining. However, the system fails in recognize if a patient is absent from bed or not. This problem led to the development of the Patient Localization and Management System (PaLMS), a Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) serving as localization and monitoring system. This paper describes the PaLMS implementation as well as an intelligent Multi- Agent System for the integration of PaLMS into the hospital platform for interoperability named AIDA (Agency for Integration, Diffusion and Archive of Medical Information). At the end, an usability evaluation was performed in order to assess the level of usability of the existing systems at Centro Hospitalar do Porto, such as the PaLMS, the INTCare and the AIDA platform. In terms of usability, the system got very positive evalutions, despite the fact some medical staff argued that they lose too much time elaborating the records.

<p>This study examined whether direct communication with people from other countries using Skype or Line would affect students’ English test scores in listening and reading as well as the development of their curiosity concerning foreign cultures by comparing the data of an experimental group with that of a control group. The former group conducted online exchanges with foreign students, while the latter group did not. As many Japanese companies engaged in international business require high scores in the TOEIC test, which is one of the multiple-choice English tests of listening and reading often used to show each person’s English proficiency, universities in Japan are making efforts to improve their students’ scores in such an English test. Preparation classes for English tests have been offered. However, students have been likely to lose interest in learning English in the circumstances of this learning style. Results of the study indicated that although the aim of exchange activities is to foster students’ curiosity concerning intercultural matters, students experiencing online exchange with skype significantly raised their scores in TOEIC tests in listening and reading after a programme of synchronous exchanges with foreign students, compared with ones who did not experience such online exchanges.</p>

Data was collected by looking at the results of student satisfaction assessments of lecturers during the teaching and learning process, namely in the PUIS (President University Information System) system in the "Lecturing Evaluation" menu. The research used quantitative methods and data analysis used SPSS version 21 software. After the data were analyzed, the researchers conducted online interviews with 12 (twelve) lecturers. The results of this study are that there is a significant difference in satisfaction between offline and online lectures, namely, when offline class students can get knowledge directly without any technical constraints and face-to-face teaching and learning process there are values that can be taken such as the process of social, cultural, ethical maturity. and morals that can only be found in the area of education. In contrast to online lectures, apart from technical problems such as the unsupported internet, online classes also make students lose motivation to study because no chemistry can be built. There are different characteristics in each faculty, this is a challenge for lecturers to explore their abilities and provide new knowledge, and of course, it can be well accepted by students. Online classes will run more effectively if both lecturers and students live it with a sense of responsibility.

Abstract:
Abstract Weight-loss efforts have grown more prevalent worldwide. But diets are linked to perception of dissatisfaction, sacrifice and general reduction of pleasure. This paper examines the hypothesis that commercial diets attract consumers by presenting argumentation that appeals to and addresses the difficulties experienced while dieting. The objective of this paper is, therefore, (1) to identify the main promotional strategies in the marketing of commercial diets and (2) to examine if and how the goal of persuasion prevails over the reasonableness of the advice. This research presented a case-study analysis of 12 commercial diets popular in the United Kingdom. An analysis of the argumentation in the online marketing of these diets was conducted. The diets were found to have three distinct features (with or without the endorsement of gurus, with or without the sale of products and the type of weight-loss method used). The analysis revealed that the most prevalent promotional strategies focused on characterizing the diet as being effective, healthy, pleasurable, easy and promoted by a prominent nutritional expert. Additionally, some argumentation structures were observed to contain inconsistent arguments as well as fallacious arguments. Marketers of commercial diets might appeal to easy ways of losing weight that might be suboptimal to adequately inform consumers’ decision-making. A better focus on information for health promotion is needed to balance the benefits of commercial diets in light of a realistic view on how to lose weight.
