Full textModern analytical transmission electron microscopes are able to gather a large amount of information from the sample in the form of multi-dimensional datasets. Although the analytical procedures developed for single spectra can be extended to the analysis of multi-dimensional datasets, for an optimal use of this highly redundant information, more advanced techniques must be deployed. In this context, we investigate alternatives to the standard quantification methods and seek to optimise the experimental acquisition for accurate analysis. This addresses the current challenges facing the electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) community, for whom beam damage and contamination are often the limiting factors. EELS elemental quantification by the standard integration method is limited to well-behaved cases. As an alternative we use curve fitting which, as we show, can overcome most of the limitations of the standard method. Furthermore, we extend the method to obtain, in addition to elemental maps, the first bonding maps at the nanoscale. A major difficulty when analysing multi-dimensional datasets of samples of unknown composition is that the quantitative methods require as an input the composition of the sample. We show that blind source separation methods enable fast and accurate analysis of multi-dimensional datasets without defining a model. In optimal conditions these methods are capable of extracting signals from the dataset corresponding to the different chemical compounds in the sample and their distribution

Full textThis document gives a report on the research that has been done to simulate hearing loss. People working with the hearing impaired have no idea of what and/or how the hearing impaired person hears sound. An instrument that enables a normal hearing person to hear what a hearing impaired person hears, is referred to in this document as a Hearing Loss Simulator (HLS). An investigation of the feasibility and practicability of the abovementioned instrument, has led to the development of the HLS by making use of a distinct type of technology called Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology. Before hearing loss can be simulated, the hearing loss first needs to be determined. A study of different procedures and methods for screening hearing has led to the incorporation of an existing instrument called an Audiometer. An audiometer is an instrument that determines the hearing loss by making use of pure tone sine waves. The results are then plotted on a graph called an Audiogram. The results of other methods that determine the hearing loss can also be transferred to the Audiogram. The Audiogram's information which is, in fact, the frequency response of the ear, is stored in a computer and is utilized to realize the HLS function. Six different DSP based methods were studied to shape any audio information according to a specific frequency response. The optimum method was identified and then implemented. The various methods are the following: Filter bank method Inverse Discrete Fourier Transforms (IDFT) method Inverse Fast Fourier Transforms (IFFT) method Chirp-z method Wavelet method Yule-walker method The ITFT method was identified as the optimum method and was therefore implemented. The algorithm to realize this method, was carried out by doing the IFFT calculation on computer and subsequently doing the filtering on a DSP processor called an ADSP-2181 processor. The audio information under investigation is fed into the instrument, it is then filtered according to the audiogram information and then sent out again. Any normal hearing person who wants to investigate the hearing impairment of the hearing impaired person can listen to sound reproduction through either a set of headphones or through a free field. This process is referred to in this dissertation as Hearing Loss Simulation.

Catalogue of a Loss is a collection of sixty-two prose poems written within the past year and half. The work is printed on 4x6 cards. Each poem may be read individually from a single card or the poems can be read in sequences. Each poem maps to at least one prescribed sequence that is visually indicated on the card(s). In the case that the poem maps to multiple sequences that poem is reprinted so that each subset it belongs to may be individually represented. Within this document, I've provided re-printings of the cards along with four of the larger possible sequences I have framed for the reader (indicated by red / violet / cyan/ gold). There are no duplicates within this set therefore the described cross-referencing in which a single poem maps to multiple sequences is not represented. The reader is encouraged to make what he will of the sequences: my intention is that the relationships suggested by the proposed reading-sequences do not establish a single structure designed to constrain the reader but offer, instead, multiple structures that will inspire new relationships of the reader's own making. The work is a memoir-of-sorts. I began working on this piece in January 2011 knowing that I would write about my father who died in January 2007-ten years after he first began experiencing symptoms of dementia. In that time I took off the Fall semester and lived in San Francisco. Writing this work caused my own re-examination on life with my parents, life at MIT and life out in the world. The work examines my life at an intimate distance. Even the colors that I used to encode the poems are taken from our family portrait. The card-form emulates exactly how I was remembering my past: connections were formed and then blurred; random details were vivid and unforgettable while others completely disappeared. The resulting work explores the lines between art and life, between art-making and life-making, between past and present, between solitude and loneliness, between intellectual exile and the comforts of home, between "family" self and "independent" self. In the sixty-seven cards represented within this document are the past five years of my life.

Mourning is a natural and expected process in the face of breaking a meaningful bond. Socially it is still disregarded the regret against gestational/neonatal loss, being a category of Unrecognized Grief. Men are socially urged to avoid their emotions and not to get in touch with their feelings, and there is the idea that they do not get involved in the loss of a child in the gestational/neonatal period. The present study aimed to investigate the experience of mourning in the loss of a son/daughter in the gestational/neonatal period. For this, a literature review was initially carried out in which few studies on the subject were found, all of which are international. After this step, an exploratory study was carried out through 10 semi-structured interviews, based on a previously delineated script. Two pilot interviews were held. The analysis of the results was made from the Explanation Method of the Underlying Discourse (MEDS). From the discourse of the subjects emerged 8 categories of analysis: It was loss even ... and I also felt; Take care of her and hold it tight, because you have to be strong !; Let s not talk about it; Something has changed between us; Ritual: a singular moment for a singular experience; Some things have made this experience easier... Other things have made it even more difficult; There is a sense to what I have lived; In the future I want to ... As a result, the fact that men feel several deep emotions about the loss of a child in the gestational/neonatal period is highlighted, although often they do not find effective social support. Regarding the farewell rituals, men are divided as to their accomplishment. However, the marital relationship seems to be the source of support needed to experience the emotions and come out strengthened from this experience. Most men seem to have managed to find meaning in their experiences, feeling that they are better people after losing their children. From the loss many of them have a future perspective and reconstruction of their lives, desiring to have more children or change to another city. It became clear that when there is an opportunity, men openly talk about how it was for them the experience of losing their children.

Full textIntroduction: Multiple studies have described a variable incidence of transient hearing loss (hypoacousis) from 0.4% to 40% after subarachnoid block, especially in the low-frequencies range (125 – 500 Hz) (1, 2). The mechanism of transient hypoacousis is attributed to leakage of cerebrospinal fluid, which leads to a decrease in perilymph pressure within the cochlear. Hypothesis: The study hypothesis was based on an assumption that hearing loss is more frequent in young patients who undergo spinal anaesthesia in comparison with elderly patients. Objective: 1) To determine the incidence of hearing loss after spinal anaesthesia in the young versus elderly patients. Materials and Methods: Ninety-eight male patients (ASA 1 - 11) scheduled for cystoscopy under spinal anaesthesia were recruited for the study. Recruitment of patients for the study was age-dependent and was divided into two groups: One group (49 patients) had patients aged between 17 and 44 years (Group Y) and the other group had 49 patients aged between 45 and 77 years made up group two (GROUP E). Subarachnoid injection at L3-4 was performed using a standard 22-gauge Quincke spinal needle with patients in the sitting position and 2,5 ml to 3 ml of 0.5% isobaric bupivacaine was administered. Patients were evaluated on the day before spinal anaesthesia by pure tone audiometry at three different frequency sounds viz. 125 – 500 Hz (Low frequency), 500 – 2000 Hz (Speech frequency) and at 2000 – 4000 Hz (High frequency). This assessment was repeated 48 hours after the spinal block was given. Statistical Analysis: Analysis was descriptive providing information on the mean (or median) and standard deviation of the variables for each of the two groups. The results of the audiometry were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance and transformation to p-value. Differences in outcomes of the study between the two groups were recorded as being statistically significant if p-value is ≤ 0.05. Results: No patient from the two groups developed hearing loss either at low or high frequencies. However, there was a statistically significant improvement in audiometric results (p-value ranging from 0.0001 and 0.063) 48 hours post-surgery in the elderly group as compared with patients in the younger group. Conclusion: The study revealed no hearing loss post-spinal anaesthesia in both groups. It did, however, show that the elderly group have better hearing acuity at all three frequency levels of sound compared to the younger group after spinal anaesthesia.

Full textLarge scale path loss modeling plays a fundamental role in designing both fixed and mobile radio systems. Predicting the radio coverage area of a system is not done in a standard manner. Wireless systems are expensive systems. Therefore, before setting up a system one has to choose a proper method depending on the channel environment, frequency band and the desired radio coverage range. Path loss prediction plays a crucial role in link budget analysis and in the cell coverage prediction of mobile radio systems. Especially in urban areas, increasing numbers of subscribers brings forth the need for more base stations and channels. To obtain high efficiency from the frequency reuse concept in modern cellular systems one has to eliminate the interference at the cell boundaries. Determining the cell size properly is done by using an accurate path loss prediction method. Starting from the radio propagation phenomena and basic path loss models this thesis aims at describing various accurate path loss prediction methods used both in rural and urban environments. The Walfisch-Bertoni and Hata models, which are both used for UHF propagation in urban areas, were chosen for a detailed comparison. The comparison shows that the Walfisch-Bertoni model, which involves more parameters, agrees with the Hata model for the overall path loss.
