Abstract:
AbstractWe examine the penalties imposed on the 585 firms targeted by SEC enforcement actions for financial misrepresentation from 1978–2002, which we track through November 15, 2005. The penalties imposed on firms through the legal system average only $23.5 million per firm. The penalties imposed by the market, in contrast, are huge. Our point estimate of the reputational penalty—which we define as the expected loss in the present value of future cash flows due to lower sales and higher contracting and financing costs—is over 7.5 times the sum of all penalties imposed through the legal and regulatory system. For each dollar that a firm misleadingly inflates its market value, on average, it loses this dollar when its misconduct is revealed, plus an additional $3.08. Of this additional loss, $0.36 is due to expected legal penalties and $2.71 is due to lost reputation. In firms that survive the enforcement process, lost reputation is even greater at $3.83. In the cross section, the reputation loss is positively related to measures of the firm's reliance on implicit contracts. This evidence belies a widespread belief that financial misrepresentation is disciplined lightly. To the contrary, reputation losses impose substantial penalties for cooking the books.

Abstract:
The prevailing informal contracts of farmland transfer in China are facing frequent disputes and defaults, which call for effective self-enforcement mechanisms operating through transactors’ reputations and social networks. However, the effects of reputation on contract choice and self-enforcement have not been thoroughly considered and examined by existing research in the case of farmland transfer. This study explores the reputation’s ex-ante signaling effect on farmers’ contract choices and the ex-post penalty effect on farmers’ performance in informal contracts. Based on 403 transfer contracts obtained from a field survey conducted in the Hebei province of China, we apply the multinomial logit model and Heckman probit model to perform empirical analysis. The results show that, affected by the penalty effect, farmers with good reputations are more likely to fulfill informal contracts to avoid reputation damage and the resulting loss of future trading opportunities. However, in the ex-ante stage of contract choice, a farmer’s reputation has no significant signaling effect on the formation of informal contracts. The informal contracts are chosen due to farmers’ trust in the close social network and the demand for reduced transaction costs. These findings highlight the importance of personal reputation serving as a form of relational governance in the self-enforcement of informal contracts, which provides a means of enhancing the informal contract’s effectiveness in terms of farmland transfer in the rural acquaintance society. It also provides insights into the necessity of creating a supportive environment for informal rules. Policies should encourage the building of personal reputation and establishment of good social norms to form a long-term, stable and reasonable contractual relationship for farmland transfer.

Abstract:
Reputation is considered as the summary of a person's relevant past actions in the context of a specific community and is a concept which has gained huge relevance in the cyberworld as a way of building trust. Increasingly, however, reputation is awarded to users after they have carried out repetitive, mechanical or trivial actions. This opens the space to a phenomenon which we can define as the automated production of reputation: reputation produced by the means of software technologies known as bots that can easily automate repetitive online actions. In this paper the phenomenon of automated production of reputation is preliminarily defined and presented using three different empirical examples: Massively Multiplayer Online Games, the social network twitter and the reputational hub Klout. The paper also discusses some of the foreseeable negative consequences of the automated production of reputation and in particular the risks related to the loss of trust in online communities.

Abstract:
The 2007-2009 revealed the weaknesses of the growth foundation and failure of risk management systems in large global banks. Consequently, there has been renewed interest in the creation of stable and functional risk culture. Protecting a financial institution’s reputation is among the most significant challenges facing financial firms. Thus the aim of this paper is to analyze why reputational risk is important for banks, and to trace its sources and consequences. In the empirical part, the paper proposes a new method to measure reputational risk: Stakeholder Reputation Score (SRS). The panel regression models are used to examine the impact of the SRS indicator on bank performance, for listed banks in the CEE-11. The estimation results indicate that the efforts to enhance bank reputation may not have a positive effect on bank performance, which may explain why many banks deal with reputational risk mainly in the context of minimizing loss after a scandal, rather than treating it as a strategic, long-term goal

Abstract:
Abstract Background: In recent years, reputation has become an important risk concern for companies around the world. Deloitte Global Survey highlights the reputation risk as the top strategic business risk in 2014. This is also proven by a research conducted by AON Global Risk Management Survey in 2015 and Allianz Risk Barometer Survey in 2016 which finds a loss of reputation as one of the biggest risks for business executives. Furthermore, the importance of reputation is confirmed by the fact that reputation accounts for more than 25 percent of a company’s market value and the total market capitalization of the S&P500 companies. Objectives: To investigates the relationship between corporate reputation and financial performance. Methods/Approach: The survey of the paper was conducted in 2015 in Croatia. The questionnaire for assessing corporate reputation contained three reputational dimensions: products and services, corporate integrity, and organizational performance while the financial dimensions contained indicators of EVA, ROCE, ROA, ROE and the financial stability coefficient. Hierarchical regression methods were applied in the analysis. Results: This research leads to the conclusion that some dimensions of corporate reputation can be important predictors of financial performance. Conclusions: Results of the research could be a valid motivation for business executives to consider reputation risk as a critical issue of corporate business strategy.

Abstract:
One of the typical problems in merger and acquisition is the post-merger integration of corporate culture, including the management of reputation risk. This is a relatively new problem, as the reputational risk was not initially included in the Basel Committee recommendations. The post-crisis period brought increased interest in this type of risk. The purpose of this article is therefore to trace the sources of reputational risk and consequences of the problems associated with the negative reputation of the bank, focusing on large global institutions. Numerous empirical examples have shown that reputational risk is more important for large than for small banks, as well as those of smaller capitalization and consequently should be an important factor in consolidation processes. Reputational problems may result in either bankruptcy after the scandal, or long-term loss of customers and business partners, leading to the destruction of the brand and company image.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the relevance of corporate governance to the likelihood of bank misconduct and subsequent reputational loss over the period 2000-2014. Regulatory enforcement actions issued by major U.S. banking supervisors are used to identify whether a bank has engaged in misconduct. I adopt the residual method to estimate the magnitude of reputational loss following the announcement of enforcement actions, and observe that potential reputational loss plays an important role in disciplining banks' behavior. I find board heterogeneity (i.e., board size and diversity) is significantly non-linearly associated with the likelihood of bank misconduct and the magnitude of the reputational loss.

Abstract:
This thesis examines reputation loss of firms violating Securities Law in China, where the legal system is incomplete and legal enforcement is weak. I find that reputation loss plays an important role in disciplining fraudulent Chinese firms, even in state-owned firms. The reputation loss is directly related to deteriorating 'terms of trade'. Restructuring firm through merger and acquisition (M&A) is ineffective in restoring damaged reputation in the short run.

Abstract:
Law statutes and codes lack of a precise definition of the « full compensation » principle, and a fortiori they Jack of rules for assessing compensatory damages. The legal doctrine tries to fil] in the blank by describing the different types of damages awarded, notably in the United States. Yet, the issue remains full when the Joss is certain but its valuation remains complex or uncertain. The assessment of the economic Joss and the calculation methodology for damages are considered to be only matters of facts: trial courts and judges thus retain a sovereign power, resulting in great uncertainty for the parties. Reducing judicial uncertainty requires the choice and creation of a common framework. Based on the results of an empirical law and economics analysis of several hundreds of precedent cases, the dissertation formulates simple and practical suggestions for parties looking to improve their chances of success in recouping lost profits and lost opportunities. It also evidences which improvements of the judicial systems are required in order to actually implement the current right to full compensation. More importantly the research reaches a fundamental nonnative conclusion: economic Joss, compensatory damages and hence, the calculation of the quantum granted should be considered, not as mere matters of facts but also as matters of law. Henceforth, it would be logical that the Cour de cassation ( or the highest court) advises and controls the use of calculation methodology. Each head of damages would thus be legally qualified and the principle of full compensation would be extended in order to better compensate the loss when evaluating its quantum is complex. It finally results that referenced compensatory scales can be practically developed from compiling relevant legal precedents. The introduction of such scales would benefit academics in their debates, parties in the drafting of their contracts and counsels in their pre-trial exchanges. Eventually, judges could use them as tools to assist their rulings. If those scales were to be adopted and shared, they would enable the creation of such artificial intelligence as machine learning which value - notably the predictive value - would far exceed what is perceived today

Abstract:
Managerial and regulatory focus in the financial industryhas been intensified due to a number of extremely costly and highly publicized events. Whenfraudulent activities or any improper business practices are revealed it may damage the bank’sreputation. In the end this can have a big impact on anyone who is any kind of stakeholder.Reputational risk and by what mechanism reputational risk is adversely affecting stock pricesis therefore of great importance for stakeholders. This study aims at providing insights and abetter understanding of reputational risk. We examine the reputational damage in banksresulting from operational losses and analyze the stock market reaction across the bankingindustry. Research question: What is the effect of operational loss announcements from internalfraudulent activities on competitors in the banking industry? The results show a positive cross-bank reaction during the observed period oftime. Furthermore, the cross-bank reaction is stronger when a reputational damage isrecognized in the bank where the loss occurred. Abstract:
Compensation for moral damage is a source of significant discrepancies. The high amounts of compensation granted in a few arbitral awards have generated many arguments on the subject of moral damage, which has long remained marginal in arbitration. In this context, some arbitral tribunals have chosen to apply special rules that depart from the solutions enshrined in international law. In view of these developments and the growing importance of fundamental rights in international business relationships, it has become necessary to carry out a comprehensive review of the issue. This study covers 368 arbitral awards related to non-pecuniary loss in investment arbitration, international commercial arbitration and sports arbitration. The subject is being put into perspective through comparative law and the history of compensation for this kind of damage. This study proceeds to an empirical analysis of the concept of non-pecuniary loss in arbitration. New questions relating to the jurisdiction and powers of arbitrators in relation to this kind of damage are considered. The relation in arbitration between the principle of full compensation and the right to compensation for moral damages, as well as the conditions required by case-law in arbitration, are assessed in order to identify the philosophy of reparation implemented by arbitrators. Finally, this study addresses the question of the remedies available (restitution, compensation, satisfaction) and, in particular, the quantum for non-pecuniary loss. It also establishes the importance of the right to compensation for non-pecuniary loss and calls for a more consistent approach in this subject-matter

Abstract:
Despite the growing population of Internet customers, purchasing online can still be a confusing and overwhelming activity. Perceived risk plays a crucial role in online buying decisions. The mechanism of online customer feedback has been identified to improve trust and to reduce risk in online marketplaces. Feedback from previous customers greatly builds online vendor reputation and establishes trust, which positively influence the intent to purchase. This study aims to find out how a feedback system enhances vendor reputation and can thereby be used to mitigate product complexity and facilitate online purchasing decisions in the B2C environment. The cooperation with a feedback company creates an experimental setting that allows a relationship between positive feedback, conversion rate, arbitrations and feedback submissions to be inferred. The access to real feedback and transaction data allows the investigation of actual risk perception and the need for risk evaluation. This study considers both the user’s and the vendor’s interaction with the feedback system. Nelson’s (1970) product classification is used to divide product categories into different levels of product complexity. The study follows a positivist quantitative approach and applies deductive strategies and procedures to address the research objective. The author presents a number of hypotheses and has analysed data from 400 online stores that have implemented a feedback system. Transaction and feedback data were drawn from a feedback company database and have been analysed using linear regression and partial correlation. The results of this research indicate that product complexity has an inevitable influence upon an online buying process. The greater the transaction value (average price) and the functional/technical complexity of the product (product complexity), the more the presence of feedback grows in importance. However, the aspect of trust, that emerged due to of the percentage of positive feedback by past customers, only influences sales of highly complex products, which means that product category matters with regard to the trust transference theory. The findings identified different risk types which corraborate the theory that risk is multi-faceted. Finally this study provides valuable insights about the vendor's strategic work with a feedback system. The conclusions provide suggestions for online vendors as to how they can use online feedback systems as tools for dealing with the shortcomings associated with electronic commerce. It is important for vendors of complex products to invest in their reputation and to establish trust on the basis of feedback that is as positive as possible. By better understanding the relationships among positive reputation profiles and certain risk types (financial risk, product risk, physical risk, time risk), vendors may be able to take more appropriate actions in their efforts to make shopping online a less risky experience and motivate certain behaviour, such as purchasing. It is recommended that the vendor carries out proper complaint management in the form of arbitration procedures on negative feedback. A feedback system gives online vendors the advantage of protecting themselves against the negative opinions spread on the World Wide Web. The process of arbitrations enables vendors to show competence and has the ability to turn dissatified customers into satisfied customers. In order to enhance the online reputation, organisations should offer workshops on the efficacy of working with a feedback system and how to conduct arbitrations properly.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine whether U.S. banks that announced material operational risk loss (oprisk loss) events can still enjoy a lower cost of capital. I use the bank's credit rating as a proxy for the cost of debt capital, and the actual oprisk loss amounts announced by publicly traded U.S. banks for $10 million and over during the period 1998 to 2012 compiled from my own database. I also investigate whether the type of oprisk loss event and business line in which the loss event was incurred matter to credit rating agencies. I perform additional analysis to determine whether a downgrade in a bank's credit rating associated with the announcement of a material oprisk loss amount impacts the bank's reputation. This study focuses on the U.S. banking industry because of the increased market and regulatory scrutiny of oprisk losses; especially during the financial crisis of 2008 to 2010. The logistic analysis shows that banks' announcement of material oprisk loss amount is associated with a decline in credit ratings. The findings did not support the position that the type of loss event and business line in which the loss event was incurred matter to credit rating agencies. The results for the event study show that a downgrade in a bank's credit rating associated with an announcement of a material loss amount has a robust, statistically significant negative stock market reaction. Furthermore, the results reveal that the losses in market value significantly exceed the announced loss amounts associated with credit rating downgrades, indicating reputational loss to the banks. This research was limited to announcements of material oprisk loss amounts by U.S. banks publicly traded on major U.S. stock exchanges. Investigating the impact of announcements of material oprisk loss amounts by financial institutions publicly listed on major stock exchanges worldwide provides an avenue for future research. This study contributes to the literature on operational risk and the cost of debt capital as reflected in credit ratings by providing empirical evidence of the impact of oprisk losses on credit ratings of U.S. banks.

Abstract:
Walter Benington (1872-1936) was a major British photographer, a member of the Linked Ring and a colleague of international figures such as F H Evans, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen and Alvin Langdon Coburn. He was also a noted portrait photographer whose sitters included Albert Einstein, Dame Ellen Terry, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and many others. He is, however, rarely noted in current histories of photography. Beaumont Newhall’s 1937 exhibition Photography 1839-1937 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York is regarded by many respected critics as one of the foundation-stones of the writing of the history of photography. To establish photography as modern art, Newhall believed it was necessary to create a direct link between the master-works of the earliest photographers and the photographic work of his modernist contemporaries in the USA. He argued that any work which demonstrated intervention by the photographer such as the use of soft-focus lenses was a deviation from the direct path of photographic progress and must therefore be eliminated from the history of photography. A consequence of this was that he rejected much British photography as being “unphotographic” and dangerously irrelevant. Newhall’s writings inspired many other historians and have helped to perpetuate the neglect of an important period of British photography. As a result, the work of key photographers such as Walter Benington is now virtually unknown. Benington’s central involvement with the Linked Ring and his national and international exhibition successes demonstrate his significance within post-1890 British photography. Recent moves in the writing of histories of photography have called for the exploration of previously unknown archives and collections. A detailed examination of a cross-section of Benington’s work will illustrate that he was a photographer of great distinction and marked individuality fully worthy of a major reappraisal.

Abstract:

Mining is a strategic industry in modern societies. However, it has a bad reputation in the public opinion for their risk perception of its social and environmental impacts. Faced with this dichotomy are Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, members of the Pacific Alliance -PA-, which plans to become a global mining trade block in 2020. Taking into account that the media influence the formation of public opinion and configure the reputation, it is essential to know how the regional press has reported on the sector, contributing with media visibility and favorability of the media actors and issues. This dissertation aims to evaluate the media reputation of mining in the four countries of the PA, with data obtained from quantitative and qualitative content analysis of 20 online newspapers. The results show that the industry and the companies have a MEDIUM media visibility and a predominantly NEGATIVE favorability for the treatment of related issues, both with corporate ability and with corporate social responsibility.

Abstract:
Ṭuqūs al-išārāt wa-l-taḥawwulāt (Rituals of Signs and Transformations), published in 1994, is a play which can be attributed to the last phase of Saʿd Allāh Wannūs’s literary production. At this stage, the Syrian author’s political commitment is no longer expressed through the interest for the collective dimension, but it focuses on the individual, considered as a pivotal element for social change. In Ṭuqūs, Saʿd Allāh Wannūs revisits history from an individual point of view, fragmenting it into a multiplicity of micro-narratives. During the 1880s in Damascus, the muftī, the chief religious legal authority, and the leader of the ašrāf, the descendants of the Prophet, are involved in a feud that splits the city into factions and brings it on the verge of anarchy. When the chief of police arrests the leader of the ašrāf while he is engaged in lovemaking with his mistress in his semi-private garden, the muftī concocts a scheme to save his enemy’s reputation, but his real aim is to subdue him and get rid of him. This event triggers a series of transformations involving the identities of the characters. Thus, the leader of the ašrāf, a regular of prostitutes and assiduous drinker, suddenly becomes a mystic with ascetic ambitions, while the upright muftī loses his head for a high-ranking woman who leaves her respectable life to become a prostitute. The whole society is destabilized by the desires of the characters. Desire not only affects their individual identity, but it also exerts influence on their social position, undermining a system of norms based on hypocrisy and on the division between the ‘latent’ and the ‘manifest’.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter draws on my experience of writing and publishing my 2014 novel, The Diary of Mary Travers, and on the research for my edited collection The Selected Writings of Speranza and William Wilde (2020) in order to consider the afterlives of Jane Wilde and the silencing and distorting of her scholarly and intellectual career. In particular, the essay looks at her reputation during her lifetime, her scholarship and her public role within Irish cultural nationalism and denounces that her own voice was silenced by a homophobic discourse around her influence on her son. The chapter argues that contemporary Irish cultural discourse has remade her reputation and connects this moment with a tendency in contemporary Irish fiction which focuses on the re-examining of lost and hidden lives.

Abstract:
Loss of reputation is a non-pecuniary loss, which is traditionally regarded as distinct from mental distress in that it deals with society’s feelings towards the claimant, rather than with the claimant’s own feelings. But often mental distress consequent on loss of reputation is not clearly separated from the award for loss of reputation itself. Indeed on an alternative view, alternative to that traditionally taken by the courts, all non-pecuniary loss, including loss of reputation, is ultimately regarded as a loss only in terms of the distress or loss of happiness caused to the claimant. However, where a claimant complains of a loss of reputation she is generally concerned not only about loss of reputation itself, but also and often primarily about the pecuniary loss flowing from it and both will be considered.

Abstract:
Abstract Reputation damage is common to us all. Drawing on an extreme case study of a research project on seventy white-collar inmates led by Navdeep Arora, we outline the stages of recovery from reputation loss. We show that the way individuals lose their reputation has an impact on their ability to recover. We find that while the literature has emphasized the importance of contribution reputation and character reputation, which are a function of how others perceive you based on your past actions, they do not capture contexts when others perceive you based on their assessment of your ability to provide value in the future, which we capture through the concept of contribution reputation. Surprisingly, despite the monumental difficulties inmates faced in coming to terms with their reputation loss, many recognized that their setbacks were an important turning point, triggering reflection and an opportunity for renewal and betterment.

Abstract:
Breach of contract damages are normally sought and awarded for this type of loss. It is therefore not surprising that there is a host of different ways of analysing and subdividing it. Here the approach adopted will be to divide between basic pecuniary loss, which will be primarily concentrated on, and which focuses on the benefit to which the claimant was contractually entitled and of which it has been wholly or partially deprived by the defendant’s breach, and additional pecuniary loss.

Abstract:
This chapter evaluates the dispositional theory against the crisis decision making of President Bill Clinton. Of all the presidents studied in this book, Clinton comes closest to an ideal-type high self-monitor. A review of both quantitative and qualitative indicators of military assertiveness from before and during his presidency indicates that his beliefs about the efficacy of military force leaned toward the dovish side of the military assertiveness scale. Taken together, one should expect Clinton's crisis behavior to be consistent with that of a reputation believer. Because of his more dovish tendencies, Clinton did not seek out opportunities to show resolve and was at first reluctant to use force to demonstrate resolve; but once he sensed a loss of reputation, he was prepared to escalate with military force as the theory predicts.

Abstract:
Using the three-period model from Chapter 2, this chapter explores whether the presence of activists enhances or harms social welfare. Campaigns have both static and dynamic effects which have fairly different but complementary effects on social welfare. The canonical case in which an activist campaign increases welfare involves a firm that cares intensely about protecting itself against reputation loss, an activist that is not excessively passionate, and a campaign aimed at addressing a high-stakes negative externality. A sufficiently high marginal benefit from private regulation is necessary for an activist to be socially beneficial, while campaigns resulting in private regulation that is essentially redistributive necessarily reduce social welfare.

Abstract:
Clothes were the most important and expensive properties of an early modern theatre company. The first recorded performances of English professional actors on mainland Europe occurred in the context of a major crisis in the international cloth trade and efforts to form an international Protestant alliance. Known for their extravagant and luxurious clothing, the English Comedians took advantage of existing routes developed for the export and import of cloth. Extant dramatic adaptations of English plays associated with their tradition reflect the vital importance of textile stock to their performances and reception. Their reputation for sartorial extravagance involved the English Comedians in discourses of national loss: in the Holy Roman Empire, as in England, imported fine clothes were linked repeatedly to a diminishment of national treasure. Meanwhile, their comic tradition made extravagant use of the symbolic and physical properties of clothing. Although the formative importance of cloth economies to the early English professional theatre has been widely recognized, this chapter puts that dynamic into an international context for the first time.

Abstract:
Purpose – the purpose of the article is to identify the criteria influencing on the reputational performance of a financial organisation and recognise the impact of reputation on the activities of a financial institution. Research methodology – to estimate the reputational impact on a financial organisation an interview with experts was conducted. In order to process the received data SAW, COPRAS and geometric mean methods were used. The mentioned methods were applied for performance measurement to ensure the inclusion of the reputation-sensitive data. Findings – the weakest position of the financial company in terms of reputational condition implies decreased efficiency of its performance. The degree of reputation and the impact of repercussions on the organisation’s performance can be further measured through financial analysis. Research limitations – the financial organisation analysed in the current study does not provide services for local clients, hence there is no possibility to obtain primary data from direct interactors. Practical implications – the research results provide insight towards key areas to look on while conducting root-cause analysis for decrease of financial performance; reputational impact measurement model can be used for further planning processes related to the future repercussions prevention. Originality/Value – literature overview results prove that it is still argued over the way reputational impact could be measured due to the fact that organizational reputation is attributed to a long-term intangible asset which is sensitive towards the subjectivity of the analysed matter. While it is usual to measure the reputation from the clients’ perspective, the research on reputation impact relies on the particular statistical data on company’s condition in the market.

Abstract:
Cargo loss/damage is a very common problem faced by almost any business with a supply chain arm, leading to major problems like revenue loss and reputation tarnishing. This problem can be solved by employing an asset and impact tracking solution. This would be more practical and effective for high-cost cargo in comparison to low-cost cargo due to the high costs associated with the sensors and overall solution. In this study, we propose a low-cost solution architecture that is scalable, user-friendly, easy to adopt and is viable for a large range of cargo and logistics systems. Taking inspiration from a real-life use case we solved for a client, we also provide insights into the architecture as well as the design decisions that make this a reality.

Abstract:
Major accidents caused by pipelines, such as explosions, deterioration can be harmful to the population's safety, public health and environment. Therefore, wide attention in preserving pipeline assets is needed to derive risk assessment of the pipelines from the accidents. This paper proposes a pipeline risk assessment method of space and visualisation focused on the existing state of gas pipeline risk assessment using an annotative geographical information system (GIS)-based approach to improve the administrative level of pipeline protection among the human physical area. This study aims to identify the losses of pipeline damage, calculate its losses in physical and monetary terms, and validate the calculated losses and its risk indexes with previous work. The calculation of overall consequences losses focuses on specifically Production Loss (PL), Asset Loss (AL), Human Health and Safety Loss (HHSL), Environment Loss (EL), Public Loss (PubL) and Reputation Loss (RL). An urban area of Bukit Istana is chosen for stimulation and to be investigated. As a result, the consequences loss assessment is produced and shown in the monetary unit. Assessment of hazard- affected bodies around the pipeline in Bukit Istana are also identified through spatial analysis and been visualized. This paper concludes by introducing the application of the environmental risk management method under the influence of the risk estimation system, obtaining the spatial distribution impact of environmental risk visualisation, and providing policymakers with a consistent decision basis.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico and January 2017 in Oklahoma brought into sharp focus what can happen if the oil and gas industry gets well control wrong: 16 fatalities, significant environmental damage, loss of assets and reputation. Each year we have multiple blowouts and several fatality events due to a loss of well control. The oil and gas industry can improve from a personnel safety, environmental and reputation perspective. The Automation of Well Control will bring a significant step change in the area of Process Safety forwells. It prevents blowouts, reduces all influx volumes, minimising kicktolerance volumes and reducingcasing and well costs. Method A system has been developedwhich enables Automated Well Control whilst in drilling mode. Pre-determined influx rates, agreed by the operator and drilling contractor, and input by the driller are established. Once the system detects the influx, it performs a series of operations by taking control of the drilling rig equipment. The drill string is spaced out, top drive and mud pumps are stopped, and the BOP is closed. All of this occurs without the driller doing anything; however, he can intervene at any moment. Thissystem is designed as an aid to the driller and does not remove his responsibility. Results The Automated Well Control system has been tested on drilling simulators with real drillers. Comparisons tests have shown that the technology enables shut-in times faster than conventional human interface methods, with influx volumes typically 10-20% of those experienced during manual shut-in. Additionally, a full Field Trial using a traditional rigdemonstrated the effectiveness of the system, proving up the functionality under different operational requirements. The system can now be applied to any type of rig worldwide. Over 50 potential modules have been identified. Planned developments forthe system include circulatingout the kick automatically, shut-in for tripping, circulating, cementing and in-flow testing. It provides assurance for afast, safe and effective shut-in.A full Technology Qualification process has been used for this technology. Innovative Technology Over the past 20 years, technology advancements associated with simulators and cyber-rigs have enabled new technologies to be developed. One of these technologies is Automated Well Control. It is believed that this innovative system will enable a step change in the performance ofprocess safety forwell control, dramaticallyreducing major accident hazards, thereby saving millions of dollars per well, reducing environmental impact and preventing loss of life.

Abstract:
Abstract COMPANY-A is the operator of Field-A gas field that started operation in Country-A in 1996. Reliable and smooth condensate handling is key to ensure the continuous gas production and hence, maintaining the gas supply assurance. To cater for the reduced condensate throughput and export, COMPANY-A hired Company-B to refurbish a Floating Storage and Offloading vessel (FSO) named FSO-B; a new player and has minimum experience in oil and gas industry. Operation readiness review is crucial to ensure the safe operations in Field-A. In this paper, a review on the pipeline transient analysis and process safety focusing on condensate export line from SPM, flexible hose and piping modification on FSO-B is described as a showcase. The review that referred to API standard and internal PETRONAS Technical Standards (PTS) has contributed in determining the revised operating envelop of the SPM and FSO-B compared to the initial project proposal. The technical operation and design review resulted in the avoidance of potential loss of process containment (LOPC), production deferment and PETRONAS reputation as prominent gas supplier within the region. It is important to ensure that the operating envelop is suitable with the production profile. With the operational readiness exercises, FSO-B was designed correctly and ensured of safe operation. FSO-B was commissioned on time and started operation without much delay and hence, securing the gas supply of 60 MMSCFD from Field-A to Customer-C, and exporting up to 1500 BPD condensate smoothly without interruption. This exercise has contributed to safeguard the tangible value of maintaining the gas production as well as keeping the intangible value of PETRONAS reputation. The operational readiness especially on the pipeline transient analysis review is significant novel to be replicated in other similar operations in PETRONAS and in similar operations in other operators.

Abstract:
The increasing global demand for energy will continue to necessitate the construction of large oil and gas infrastructure. With the exploitation of economic reserves in OECD countries largely in decline, the opportunities available for multinational oil companies and construction contractors are increasingly presenting themselves in non-OECD nations where the nature of non-technical risk is less predictable and less well understood. This paper attempts to outline areas of non-technical risk which should be considered in the formulation of the contracting strategy for large development and infrastructure projects. The non-technical risks described within this paper are a direct result of experiences obtained during the construction and early operations of the BTC and SCP pipelines, from 2003 to the present date. Methods by which these non-technical risks can be recognized and possibly managed will be put forward to ensure that the financial and reputation interests of both the owner and construction contractor can be protected during the execution phase of the project, where the potential for loss is the greatest.

Abstract:
Abstract Third party encroachment and geotechnical hazard are two major threats for onshore pipeline system and managing them is a real challenge to pipeline operators including PETRONAS. If these threats are not properly managed, the consequences may lead to major catastrophe which impacts public safety, asset damage, financial loss and tarnish company's reputation. Aerial surveillance i.e. drone or helicopter has been widely used by pipeline operators for inspection and monitoring of 3rd party threat and geotechnical hazard. However, the data produced from these inspections are in the forms of images and videos resulting to massive datasets. Manual interpretation of these data has caused lengthy processes, time consuming, costly, and prone to human error during data analysis. Motivated from the above pain points, a predictive analytics tool was developed in-house using various machine learning technologies to automate anomalies identification captured during aerial inspection as part of monitoring and risk management along pipeline right-of-way (ROW). The outcome from the predictive analytic tool has assisted pipeline operator to perform early intervention of possible pipeline failure due to third party and geohazards. Data automation has significanly reduced data processing time and human error for anomalies detection and verification, this subsequently improve workforce productivity while reducing safety risks, operations and maintenance costs.

Abstract:
This project aimed at investigating online damages of packaging materials generated during production because of imperfectness of production processes. These online damages may lead to upsurge in production cost and/or market returns, causing the company to experience losses and even damage its reputation. Data on online damages were collected for 20ml, 40ml and 100ml labels of an acaricide product for the period between July 2018 and June 2019 and statistically analyzed. Investigation was done on the causes of online damages, then corrective and preventive actions carried out. Analysis of online damages of labels of the three pack sizes revealed a loss of 1.01% on labels alone during the year under analysis. After implementing corrective and preventive actions, there was a reduction of online damages of labels.

Abstract:
The detection of pipeline leaks is essential for pipeline operators. The quicker the leak can be identified and located, the less product is likely to be lost from the pipeline. Reducing the loss of product results in a reduction of monetary penalties both in the value of the product lost and the associated cleanup operation that is required to remove the product from the surrounding environment. As well as preventing the reputational damage that a leak can cause. Internally based leak detection systems struggle to find small leaks and externally based systems each have their own sensitivities and difficulties in affixing near to or on the pipeline. A demand therefore exists amongst the pipeline operators to investigate the future possibilities for leak detection using methods that can be incorporated in the pipeline coating. These methods could be introduced to a pipeline when repairs are carried out to provide extra instrumentation to find leaks at these positions that are vulnerable from previous damage or points at which a leak from the pipeline would cause significant damage to the surrounding environment. This document therefore provides a literature review of currently available leak detection sensors that are embedded in pipeline coatings for the detection of small leaks and continues to give a landscape view of the research into coating embedded leak detection sensors at this time that could be built on to bring these coating embedded leak detection systems to a commercially viable state. The report gives an indication of the state of the art of the sector and the possibilities for future development of systems and techniques. Many of these techniques are at early stages of development and would require significant time and investment to commercialize as a viable system.

This paper looks closely at recent disputes in West Africa and investigates their impact on investment in land-based assets across the sub-region. A pattern of dispute, financial loss, and reputational damage has pushed some palm oil companies to enhance their standards and practice around tenure and local engagement. In the process, the sector as a whole has become more aware of the risks posed in particular by governments with low capacity on tenure and local engagement, and therefore more discerning about where they invest.
